PubMedID: 30836012 Background: Antenatal care is necessary for mother and infant by reducing or eliminating the risks which may occur in the antenatal and postnatal period. Ultrasound is one of the most commonly used examination methods in antenatal monitoring. Evaluating the expectations, experiences and reactions of both parents during routine ultrasound examinations is essential to provide the best antenatal care. Objective: This study aims to test the validity and reliability of the PEER-U scale developed for Sweden by Ekelin et al. Method: The PEER-U scale consists of before and after ultrasound scales. Four hundred and thirty-six parents participated in the study. Interviews were conducted with all participating parents in a private room 15 minutes before and five minutes after the ultrasound. Researchers analysed the PEER-U scale for language, content, construct, criterion-referenced validity and internal consistency reliability. Results: The Turkish version of PEER-U has 21 items in the before ultrasound scale and 21 items in the after ultrasound scale. Cronbach's alpha was 0.65 for the before ultrasound scale and 0.89 for the after ultrasound scale. Conclusion: The study determined that the Turkish version of the PEER-U scale is a valid and reliable scale for Turkish society. © 2019, © 2019 Society for Reproductive and Infant Psychology.

Miscarriage is the most common complication of pregnancy. There is a growing recognition that early pregnancy loss can be associated with high levels of psychological distress, yet routine follow-up care for women and their partners is not existent in the UK. This paper describes the development and evaluation of a miscarriage follow-up clinic, which was established in order to provide information, support and care to couples in whom a routine ultrasound examination in the first trimester of pregnancy revealed a pregnancy failure. Three stages in the development of the clinic are described: during the initial stage, the psychological outcomes and desirability of follow-up care after missed miscarriages were established. In the face of inconclusive evidence of the clinical benefits of routine obstetric ultrasound, a number of claims have been made about the psychological impact of the procedure. The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists Working Party on Ultrasound Screening for Fetal Abnormalities reported in 1997 that the objectives of a routine ultrasound scan include 'psychological support'. This structured review of the literature, however, demonstrates, firstly, that there is no experimental evidence supporting the hypothesis that 'seeing the baby' on a real-time scan precipitates maternal-fetal attachment, and secondly, that attenuated anxiety and stress following ultrasound examination are likely to reflect increased anxiety in anticipation of the procedure rather than reassurance. This paper describes the methodology used for a kinematic study of human fetal shoulder movements in utero. The data obtained in routine ultrasound examinations was recorded on videotape for repeated playback and motion analysis. Preliminary findings are presented for four subjects, one of whom may have experienced less than optimal conditions in utero. Findings were charted on a Fetal Movement Time Line, and are discussed in relation to normal motor development.

During a 3 year period, 15 cases of fetal malformation were diagnosed by routine ultrasound scanning in the 32nd week of gestation. Fourteen women were interviewed in order to find out how this diagnosis influenced the remainder of the pregnancy, the delivery and their future reproductive life. In one case intrauterine fetal death occurred in gestational week 36; this woman was excluded from the study. The women were divided into 2 groups according to the type of malformation of the fetus. In one group, the children would probably be permanently affected; in the other the children could, after adequate treatment, be expected to be healthy.
