Introduction: There is a growing interest in the study of the neurobiological correlates of internet gaming disorder (IGD), and new techniques are beginning to be implemented for this purpose, such as independent component analysis (ICA). Aims: The present narrative review aimed to explore the studies that had used ICA for the study of the different brain networks possibly associated with IGD. Methods: We specifically focussed on three of the main networks: default-mode network, executive-control and salience networks. Results: Most studies have identified alterations in these three brain networks in individuals with IGD, which may be involved in the development and maintenance of this disorder. Conclusion: More studies are needed to deepen an understanding of the specific role of each in the symptomatology and treatment of IGD.

In the present study, we investigated whether binge/purge eating disorders (ED) and pathological gambling (PG) in males can be differentiated by means of weight history and temperament and character traits. We investigated 43 male ED patients, 46 pathological gamblers and 46 healthy controls (HC) by means of lifetime weight information and the Cloninger's Temperament and Character Inventory-Revised (TCI-R). The MANCOVA results showed that ED patients showed significantly more lifetime weight fluctuations compared with PG and HC after controlling for age. Additionally, both ED and PG patients showed significantly higher scores on Harm Avoidance and lower Self-Directedness compared with HC. Results of a multinomial logistic regression showed that ED versus HC membership was determined by more weight fluctuations and lower Self-Directedness; whereas ED versus PG membership was determined by more weight fluctuations. Finally, PG versus HC membership was characterized by more Harm Avoidance, Novelty Seeking, and Persistence, and less Self-directedness. Given that both patient groups were characterized by low levels of Self-Directedness (i.e., low levels of effortful or executive control), they can benefit from training in self-regulation; and in PG patients special attention needs to be given on the training of behavioral control in the presence of novel and rewarding stimuli.

The purpose of this study was to compare online pathological gamblers (OPG) to non-online pathological gamblers (non-OPG) in terms of gambling behaviour, socio-demographic features, psychopathology and personality characteristics. A large sample of 1015 pathological gambling (PG) patients consecutively admitted to our Pathological Gambling Unit participated in the study. There were very few differences between OPGs and non-OPGs, limited to OPGs exhibiting slightly higher educational levels, higher socio-economic status and larger amounts of money spent on gambling and gambling debts. There were no differences in clinical, psychopathological and personality characteristics. Although some research has been conducted in the general population, the current paper is one of the few attempts to analyse this topic in clinical samples who seek treatment for their gambling problem. This study sought to examine the effectiveness of group and individual cognitive-behavioral treatment (CBT) and to compare the results with those of a wait-list control group among a sample of patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Fifty-seven individuals diagnosed with OCD were evaluated pre- and posttreatment with the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale and the Hamilton Rating Scales for Anxiety and Depression. Both group and individual CBT obtained statistically significant reductions in anxiety and depressive symptoms. Patients in individual treatment achieved a statistically significant reduction in OCD symptoms compared with those in group treatment, but their dropout rate was twice as high. Patients with symmetry and order rituals presented less improvement in anxiety symptoms than those with other rituals. Associated general symptoms were lower in patients receiving either mode of CBT compared with wait-list participants. This study compared symptomatological and personality differences between individuals with threshold bulimia nervosa (BN; n=39) and those with subthreshold BN (n=39) and their short-term response to a brief outpatient intervention. Participants were matched using a pairwise matching procedure, taking into account age, age of onset, and duration of the disorder. Both groups received the same brief outpatient psychoeducational therapy. The same assessment measures were used before and after treatment. With the exception of some clinical and psychopathological symptoms (higher depression and phobic anxiety in threshold BN), there were no significant between-group differences on scales of general psychopathology or personality traits. At the end of treatment, there were no significant between-group differences on abstinence rates for binge eating and vomiting, number of sessions attended, or dropout rates. Threshold BN and subthreshold BN share common psychopathological symptoms and personality traits. No differences in therapy outcome were observed for the two groups after a brief group psychoeducational intervention.

The authors sought to examine short- and mid-term effectiveness of a group cognitive–behavioral therapy (CBT) in pathological gambling (PG) and to analyze predictors of therapy outcome. Two hundred ninety PG patients participated in the current study, all diagnosed on the basis of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th edition) criteria, and were given manualized outpatient group CBT (16 weekly sessions). Specific assessment before and after the therapy and at 1, 3, and 6months follow-up was conducted. Logistic regression and survival analyses were applied. Outpatient group CBT was found to be effective, with abstinence rates of 76.1% by the end of therapy and 81.5% at 6months follow-up. The dropout rate during treatment decreased significantly after the fifth treatment session. Psychopathological distress (p=.040) and obsessive–compulsive symptoms were identified as factors predicting relapse and dropout, respectively.
