The role of signal-based nonlinear system identification methods for the rapid post-earthquake damage assessment of reinforced concrete (RC) bridge piers is explored. Experimental data from the shaking table tests of six RC columns with and without corrosion damage are used as benchmark data. The specimens are excited under three different ground motions with different time-series characteristics, structural detailing, and corrosion levels. The proposed system identification methods make use of accelerations alone (but not displacements as these are costly in-situ) to estimate the instantaneous frequency. The Wigner-Ville distribution and Hilbert transform are utilised due to their high resolution in both time and frequency domains.A combination of modal filtering and thresholding, using instantaneous amplitudes, are employed to attenuate the unreliable spikes in the Hilbert transform’s instantaneous frequency estimates. Their performance is benchmarked against a moving linear regression and standard white-noise tests. The comparison of the experimental results and time-frequency analysis indicates that the Wigner-Ville distribution and the Hilbert transform can produce reliable rapid damage detection when the response amplitude is large. The Wigner-Ville distribution has better robustness and higher resolution. The robustness of the more computationally efficient Hilbert transform can be significantly improved by the introduction of modal filtering and thresholding.

In this study, scour-based vibrations of bridge piers are investigated using a bridge model in a water flume: first, the eigenmode corresponding to the measured frequencies of pier-like structures is identified. Secondly, the effect of the pier-deck interaction is studied. Finally, a theoretical model is proposed to characterize the pier vibration, and identify its input parameters.To this end, experimental campaigns were conducted and a laboratory scale model pier was tested in two configurations: single piers and two piers in bridge configuration. The experimental results enable the identification of the modal shape and indicate that the deck decreases significantly the pier's frequency. Parallely, a theoretical model was proposed to model the pier, where the soil was modeled with both lateral springs along the pier and a rotational spring at the base. These springs stiffness were then identified using a 3D-finite element model. These results, obtained with the theoretical and numerical models, are in good agreement with the experimental results with the bridge pier in the two tested configurations. Moreover the obtained theoretical, numerical and experimental results were compared to experimental data found in the literature, for further validation.

Scouring is the most common cause of bridge failure. This study was conducted to evaluate the efficiency of the Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) in determining scour depth around composite bridge piers. The experimental data, attained in different conditions and various pile cap locations, were used to obtain the ANN model and to compare the results of the model with most well-known empirical, HEC-18 and FDOT, methods. The data were divided into training and evaluation sets. The ANN models were trained using the experimental data, and their efficiency was evaluated using statistical test. The results showed that to estimate scour at the composite piers, feedforward propagation network with three neurons in the hidden layer and hyperbolic sigmoid tangent transfer function was with the highest accuracy. The results also indicated a better estimation of the scour depth by the proposed ANN than the empirical methods.
