An important aspect of the nineteenth century debate on the relationship between science and religion concerned the popularity of deterministic views among scientists. An integral part of Comte's positivism, the idea of immutable laws that determined natural and social phenomena became an increasingly prevalent component of scientific perspectives in the Darwinian era. Referring to this tendency as 'scientific fatalism,' critics likened it to Calvinist predestination, which transformed the debate into one involving polemics about different branches of Christianity as well. This paper focuses on a neglected aspect of this debate, namely, the role that references to Islam and Turks played in it. 'Mohammedan fatalism,' already a common theme in justifications of colonialism, promptly became a tool with which to condemn new scientific views. Comparing French, British, and American writings on the topic, the paper illustrates that while there emerged approaches that praised the fatalism of Muslims while making a case for scientific determinism, most scientists and thinkers resorted to condemning the fatalism of Muslims in order to distinguish their views from it. In this respect, the paper demonstrates how political and religious discourses played a significant part in the shaping of scientific discourse in the Victorian era.

This paper examines the problem of dying alone in the context of no-visitors hospital policy during the COVID-19 pandemic. It critically analyses a rights-based solution, offering a democratized visitors policy alternative, premised on the value of legal justice. While an inclusive, participatory, and thoroughly justified visitors' policy, which takes into account the good of all stakeholders in the process, is indeed the right alternative to the paternalistic, top-down no-visitors policy, I argue that the democratized visitors' policy alternative ought to be grounded on reasons of both justice and love. Legal justice and claimable individual rights, though important, are limited and cannot fully capture the vicissitudes of mutual vulnerabilities and the moral stringency of duties of mutual care. In the context of suffering and death, instances of extreme vulnerability and interdependence, individual rights of autonomy and self-determination prove insufficient to meet our most basic needs for love, human presence, and accompaniment.

INTRODUCTION: To address the rising presence of opioid use disorder in the United States, states have begun to implement specialized opioid intervention courts to provide immediate support for individuals at risk of opioid overdose. The present study sought to understand the motivations of women to engage in treatment while enrolled in an opioid intervention court. METHODS: We conducted 31 in-depth, qualitative interviews with women enrolled in an opioid intervention court in Buffalo, NY, to better understand their motivation regarding opioid use treatment. The data indicated a combined social-ecological and self-determination theory framework. RESULTS: Thematic analysis revealed four themes across the Social-Ecological Model that aligned with motivation-related needs of autonomy, competence, and relatedness, as defined by Self-Determination Theory. Themes at each level of the Social-Ecological Model described either support for or undermining of women’s motivation for treatment: (1) individual level: personal motivation for change, (2) interpersonal level: support for OUD treatment-related autonomy, competence, and relatedness, (3) community level: court systems provide pathways to treatment, and (4) society level: insufficient social resources can undermine competence. CONCLUSIONS: The findings provide new insights into various factors across all levels of the Social-Ecological Model that influence motivation for opioid use disorder treatment among women enrolled in opioid intervention court. Results support the possibility to integrate programs rooted in Self-Determination Theory to support opioid use disorder treatment among justice-involved persons.

Self-determination theory (SDT) of human motivation was used to examine associations between different forms of motivation in Argus II retinal prosthesis users and their engagement and satisfaction with the Argus device.Nine subjects were administered: 1) a Situational Motivation Scale (SIMS) questionnaire to measure intrinsic motivation, identified regulation, external regulation, and amotivation, and 2) the Argus questionnaire (AQ) which was organized into 5 categories to measure 'Decision to get an Argus implant,' 'Self-perception as an Argus user', 'Utility of Argus,' 'Perceived competence,' and 'Family support.' Spearman correlations (Nine subjects completed both questionnaires. Statistically significant associations were observed between identified regulation and AQ items from categories: Decision to get Argus, Self-perception, Utility of Argus, and Perceived competence; and between intrinsic motivation and AQ items from Self-perception and Utility. External regulation was negatively associated with Family support, and amotivation was associated with one item from Self-perception. Engagement with the device and satisfaction were associated to both identified regulation and intrinsic motivation. There was no significant relationship between external regulation and adherence to the device.The SDT model can be used to investigate the types of motivation that influence uptake and engagement of the Argus device. Clinicians can use this knowledge to improve outcomes by supporting confidence in users and by encouraging them to maintain internalization and continued commitment to adherence.

Machine intelligence already helps medical staff with a number of tasks. Ethical decision-making, however, has not been handed over to computers. In this proof-of-concept study, we show how an algorithm based on Beauchamp and Childress' prima-facie principles could be employed to advise on a range of moral dilemma situations that occur in medical institutions. We explain why we chose fuzzy cognitive maps to set up the advisory system and how we utilized machine learning to train it. We report on the difficult task of operationalizing the principles of beneficence, non-maleficence and patient autonomy, and describe how we selected suitable input parameters that we extracted from a training dataset of clinical cases. The first performance results are promising, but an algorithmic approach to ethics also comes with several weaknesses and limitations. Purpose: Drawing from self-determination theory (SDT), the present study examined the relationship between motivation and eudaimonic well-being in the sport context. Method: The association between motivation and eudaimonic well-being was assessed using a latent variable model through Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). Three hundred ninety-nine athletes (Mage = 25.08, SD = 7.35) from 15 different individual and team sports completed a questionnaire package. Results: Results indicated that integrated and identified regulations positively predicted athletes' eudaimonic well-being. External regulation was also a positive predictor of eudaimonic well-being, while introjected regulation and amotivation negatively predicted athletes' eudaimonic well-being. Finally, athletes' intrinsic motivation did not significantly predict their eudaimonic well-being. Conclusions: Results highlight the complex link between different types of sport motivation and athletes' well-being.

The self-determination of people with intellectual disability (ID) is influenced by their interpersonal environment. This study set out to understand better the experience of Hong Kong adults with mild ID in exercising self-determination and to explore the relational and contextual dynamics of how they make decisions in conjunction with parents and paid carers.A qualitative study was conducted using focus groups for data collection. In total, 32 participants including people with mild ID, parents and rehabilitation personnel were recruited using purposive sampling. Five focus group discussions took place and the data were analysed using a thematic approach.Our findings highlight a continuum of autonomy in decision making in which participants with mild ID exercise different levels of autonomy in different contexts. In the triangular relationship with parents and rehabilitation personnel, all three parties are simultaneously looking to establish a dynamic equilibrium in decision making.The study enriches our understanding of the relational and contextual considerations for people with ID in decision making. They may have their own priorities for all the decisions they make, but these involve a dynamic interaction between all three parties.Implications for RehabilitationThe search for dynamic equilibrium in decision-making is a new finding in studies of the self-determination of people with intellectual disability (ID).The findings embed the considerations of the roles of autonomy and relatedness in the self-determination of people with ID at the intrapersonal level.The findings highlight the importance of understanding the relational concerns people with ID have about those they respect while fostering their self-determination.It is also important to address the dynamic interactions among adults with ID, parents and rehabilitation personnel, and the efforts others make in facilitating the self-determination of people with ID.

A multi-wave study across two months tested changes in motivation for staying at home at the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak in the UK and US in 683 living-alone older adults (mean age = 53 years), those that might experience greater psychological costs of being isolated for long periods of time. The study was focused on changes in two types of motivation: autonomous motivation- finding importance in the task of staying at home, and controlled motivation- staying at home because of felt pressure or choicelessness, as autonomous motivation predicts effective behavior change better than controlled motivation, especially long-term. Predictions grounded in self-determination theory (SDT) tested whether three motivating aspects of messages to stay at home from governmental and public health agencies, physicians, the news, and family and friends predicted changes in these motivations across time. Perceiving messages to stay at home as controlling predicted increases in controlled motivation and decreases in autonomous motivation over two months. Conversely, perceiving messages to stay at home as autonomy supportive predicted increases in autonomous motivation over two months. Results for mandated orders to stay at home were intriguing: they related to increases in both controlled and autonomous motivations over time. Exploratory analyses revealed that increases in autonomous motivation over time predicted actual time spent at home reported at Wave 2, whereas increases in controlled motivation did not relate. Discussion focuses on contributions to theory and public health messaging about behavioral change.

The accelerated dissemination of coronavirus disease, its effects on the general public and healthcare system have been unparalleled. COVID-19 vaccination is critical for reducing the alarming incidence of the infection, promoting herd immunity, preventing associated mortality and morbidity, and maintaining public health and safety. Through the development of COVID-19 vaccines, many people are keen to protect themselves against the virus; however, the willingness for vaccination especially in Africa, is far below what is required to stop the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, there is an immediate need to implement plans aimed at increasing population vaccine willingness. The slippery slope is whether sanctions, bans and restriction should be imposed on hesitant persons, since transmission of the epidemic can be prevented through stringent enforcement of the control barriers, while eradicating the disease would necessitate vaccination. This commentary provides recommendations about how to increase population vaccine acceptance while maintaining autonomy.

Living and acting in line with one's implicit motives fosters peoples' well-being across a wide array of cultural contexts. Yet, not all individuals commit to goals that reflect their implicit motives. Research points to resources that relate to congruence of implicit and explicit motives. We hypothesized that such resources also relate to motive-congruent identity development. In detail, we assumed that perceived parenting quality (Study 1) and sense of self-determination (Study 2) moderate the relationship between the implicit need for affiliation and dimensions of identity development in the interpersonal domain of friendship. Evidence supporting our assumptions was found in both studies: Among adolescents who reported low levels of parenting quality higher levels of the implicit affiliation motive were associated with lower levels of commitment and higher levels of reconsideration of commitment (Study 1). Moreover, a positive association between the implicit affiliation motive and commitment was verified for adolescents who were high in self-determination (Study 2). Less straightforward findings on in-depth exploration point to the Janus-faced nature of exploration processes. To conclude, the implicit need for affiliation seems to play a crucial role in interpersonal identity development if particular social and personal resources are available. Implications for future research are discussed.

The purpose of the present study was to examine how coaches' satisfaction with the team could be related to their reported interpersonal style towards young athletes, and to analyze the mediating role of basic psychological needs (i.e. need satisfaction and need frustration) in this relationship. Participants were 352 coaches (16-67 years old; Mage = 32.88, SD = 11.14) from 48 clubs, who had between 1 and 52 years of training experience (M = 23.23, SD = 15.02). Structural equation modelling (SEM) was employed to test the relationships between variables. Results showed that satisfaction with the team is positively related to coaches' need satisfaction, and negatively to their need frustration. Need satisfaction positively predicted coaches' need-supportive style, and need frustration predicted their need-thwarting style. Regarding indirect effects, need satisfaction positively mediated the relationship between coaches' satisfaction with the team and their need-supportive style, and need frustration negatively mediated the relationship between coaches' satisfaction with the team and their need-thwarting style. These findings are a first step to highlight satisfaction with the team as an antecedent of coaches' self-reported need-supportive and need-thwarting behaviours towards athletes, and the mediating role of coaches' psychological needs (need satisfaction and need frustration) in this relationship.Highlights We examined the satisfaction of the team as antecedent of coaches' interpersonal style.We tested the mediating role of coaches' psychological needs in this relationship.Satisfaction with the team was positively related to need-supportive style.Satisfaction with the team was negatively associated with need-thwarting behaviors.Coaches' psychological needs mediated the relationship between team satisfaction and their interpersonal style.

Medical student distress is an increasing concern in medical education. Addressing this issue requires a comprehensive understanding of what factors influence learners' stress in medical school. Grounded in Self-Determination Theory (SDT), this study explores the relative association between medical students' mindfulness, resilience, basic psychological needs, and perceived stress.Higher mindfulness, resilience, and need satisfaction were associated with lower perceived stress. Conversely, need frustration was associated with higher perceived stress. When students' need frustration was included in the model, the association between mindfulness, resilience, and perceived stress weakened. Third years reported more autonomy frustration than all other years. Compared to males, females in second and fourth year reported higher stress, lower mindfulness and resilience, and less competence fulfilment.Findings of this study suggest that, while mindfulness and resilience are important qualities for medical student well-being, their stress-protective benefits may diminish when students' basic psychological needs are frustrated in medical school. Addressing potentially need-thwarting aspects of the learning environment is therefore recommended, to help reduce student stress and promote their well-being. Preliminary suggestions on how this might be achieved are discussed, from an SDT perspective.

Previous studies have shown that many women who would seek care at Catholic hospitals are unaware of the hospital's religious affiliation. Furthermore, women often do not realize that these institutions operate according to religious beliefs that restrict access to certain reproductive services. Our study aimed to gain patient perspectives on experiences seeking reproductive care at religiously affiliated institutions.We conducted a qualitative study using in-depth interviews with 33 women who reported experiences seeking reproductive services at Catholic hospitals. Interview questions focused on women's experiences with religious restrictions, their attitudes towards religious healthcare, and whether and how they think women should be informed of these restrictions. Interviews were thematically analyzed using Dedoose software, applying both a priori concepts such as patient autonomy, informed decision making, and transparency, as well as new concepts that emerged from the data or denoted unanticipated distinctions within codes.In this paper, we present three findings. First, women value both patient autonomy and hospital religious freedom. Struggling to reconcile these, many blamed themselves for not anticipating religious restrictions. Second, barriers to information prevent women from researching restrictions ahead of time. Third, women would like more information about these restrictions from both doctors and hospitals.Public policy that regulates hospitals should require transparency from hospitals and physicians about religious restrictions on care. Informing the public about religious policies and how they affect reproductive care will allow patients to better anticipate differences and make informed decisions about where to seek care.

We connected self-determination theory (SDT) and escape theory to deepen the understanding of the antecedents of cognitive deconstruction by introducing autonomy and relatedness satisfaction. Based on three laboratory experiments, results showed a limited determining role of autonomy satisfaction (Experiment 1); however, the causal relationship strengthened when autonomy satisfaction was in conjunction with relatedness satisfaction (Experiments 2 and 3). Relatedness satisfaction constantly predicts all symptoms of cognitive deconstruction. Importantly, all independent explanatory powers of the two require satisfactions when explaining that the symptoms of cognitive deconstruction were qualified by their interaction terms. Regardless of relatedness satisfaction, autonomy satisfaction always positively relates to time orientation. The relationship between autonomy satisfaction and meaninglessness is only negative when relatedness satisfaction is low. The relationship between autonomy satisfaction and delayed gratification is only positive when relatedness satisfaction is high.

With a growing interest in research on educational processes, there is a need to overview suitable latent variable models for students' learning experiences in real-time. This tutorial provides an introduction to intraindividual (multilevel) structural equation models (ISEM) for the analysis of process data (e.g. intensive longitudinal, intraindividual, diary, or person-period data) collected in educational settings. Using example data on 202 students' ecological momentary assessment of 10 to 24 reports (M = 14.9, SD = 3.2), of controlled (extrinsic) and autonomous (intrinsic) motivation the following models are presented: (1) measurement models and covariate effects models; (2) models for fixed, random, and moderator effects; and (3) models for reciprocal effects of chronologically ordered data. Step-by-step instructions for modelling, and substantive interpretations are given. Overall, ISEM establishes an important window into research on real-time educational processes.

Given the apparent magnitude of the problems related to workaholism, the current research was designed to provide evidence about the impact of both personal and organizational variables on determining health-damaging work habits of the employees. This paper presents a study aimed at clarifying the mediating role that work motivation plays in the relationship between the perceived transformational leadership style and workaholism. Based on the Self-Determination Theory and the Job Demands-Resources model, we hypothesized that transformational leadership should be directly related to the lower levels of workaholism, whereas the indirect effect of transformational leadership was expected to increase the levels of workaholism through work motivation of the employees. Two hundred and fifty Lithuanian employees participated in the empirical study. The results confirmed the expected relationship between transformational leadership and workaholism via work motivation showing that the negative role of transformational leadership in workaholism is explained by its positive influence on intrinsic motivation, as well as introjected, integrated, identified regulations, which, in turn, enhance the employees' workaholism.
