This study applied storytelling in the English as a foreign language (EFL) classroom in order to promote speaking skills. Students were asked to practice speaking EFL through producing individual and interactive stories with a Web-based multimedia system. We aimed to investigate an effectiveness of applying individual and interactive storytelling on speaking skills and the potential effects of multimedia aids in storytelling to facilitate language learning. Furthermore, we explored the relationships between research variables of this study, such as speaking performance on individual and interactive storytelling, the number of animation representations, and the system actual usage, with learning achievement. Four main findings were found in this study. First, students who used the system for creating stories significantly outperformed students who did not use it on the post-test. We created a multimedia system to computerize past lectures using RealAudio software. Physicians, medical researchers and students can browse the contents of lecture slides and handouts with synchronous audio using the Internet. The audience can easily review the most interesting parts of lectures and medical students can listen to complete medical lectures from remote sites with narration and slide depiction, whenever convenient. We have created three multimedia programs; the memorial lecture of a professor's retirement, a new method of hand washing for surgical procedures and a lecture on medical informatics. The cost of this system and the results of the evaluation by medical students are described. The ease of using this application makes it a potentially valuable tool for clinicians and researchers.

This paper describes PATSy, a distributed, multimedia system designed to be a repository of patient cases and their test data. PATSy will initially consist of adult aphasia cases, though it can eventually accommodate test data from a variety of neurological and non-neurological adult and child cases. The genetic aspects of PATSy also allow it to accept test data from various disciplines. Authorized users will have passwords to allow them to access PATSy via the internet. The development of PATSy addresses several challenges in research and education. These include archiving data from rare and unusual cases, limiting loss of data, improving opportunities for data re-utilization by other researchers, and forging more direct and transparent links between research and education. Users will have access to raw test data of patients reported by researchers. Above all, the structure and design of PATSy is highly suited to case-based learning, though other methods of teaching are also accommodated.

A key decision for instructional designers is the selection of the media mix, the relative weight to be borne by the different components of the multimedia system. The appropriate criteria for this selection are debated in the literature. The article reports on development research regarding just one criterion, the opinion of students on which media mix bests suits them. Feedback on one particular course at the British Open University is studied. On this course the average student demands little change in the media mix actually offered ‐‐ except for a little less main course text, and a few more tutorials and videocassettes. Thus clear guidance appears to be given to the designer about the media mix. However there are complications. Students vary in their demands, and this variation is multidimensional. This article provides steps toward a theory of the basic effects that multimedia systems have on people. These effects are grouped into knowledge transfer, entertainment, and data processing. Although based on empirical investigations, several components of the theory are controversial and in need of further critical empirical investigation. This article criticizes the optimistic multimedia paradigm, the dominant conviction among multimedia system developers and users that adding multimedia functionality to information systems (always) leads to improved information and knowledge transfer. Adding multimedia functionality is not sufficient for these and other learning effects. The role of independent variables that facilitate multimedia effects is reviewed and a more moderate, realistic multimedia paradigm is proposed.

This article presents empirical research conducted on the effectiveness of the Advanced Technology Classroom (a computer‐integrated, multimedia learning environment) on engineering‐based curriculum. Multimedia offers the opportunity to enhance learning through greater audiovisual perceptions and interactive participation. Effectiveness of the ATC multimedia system was determined through a series of empirical studies that compared instruction with multimedia to traditional instruction methods. Courses in production/operations management and mechanics of materials were chosen for examination using undergraduate engineering students. The research findings suggest that multimedia is an applicable, pedagogical tool for use in training engineers.

Since 1990, the Department of Physiology and Biochemistry at the University of Veterinary Science in Budapest, Hungary, has been involved in the development of a multimedia system for teaching physiology to undergraduate veterinary students. The present paper describes the achievements and approaches during the last years, and how a Windows‐based authoring system (Guide 3.1) has allowed the student‐based introduction of ‘directed self education’, a method that very much enhances student creativity.
