Canada and China are two very different countries in terms of their socio-economic and political contexts; however, neither country is immune to the social problem of violence against women. This paper compares the criminal justice responses to violence against women in Canada and China in order to explore the pathway of responses to violence against women in different cultural contexts, and discusses the implications for addressing violence against women on an international horizon.

In accounting education, most Student Approaches to Learning (SAL) research has investigated the relationship between students' performance and their approaches to learning. Relatively limited research has been conducted on how assessment practices influence the quality of students' learning from the students' perspective. This paper seeks to address this gap in the accounting education literature. The research is centred on a large Australian undergraduate accounting degree delivered in Australia, Singapore and Hong Kong. Focus group interviews were conducted with students across the three locations. The research results reveal that: (1) it is the English competency of students that has the most important impact on students' completion of set assessment tasks and thus their approach to learning; (2) it is the way in which assessment is designed and written and the way lecturers convey their expectations about how assessment will be undertaken that is crucial to how students from various countries perform...

``Restorative health'' is the idea that those who have been denied access to the social determinants of health, particularly as young children, should have the right to restoration of healthy functioning. In interviewing a group of vulnerable young women, ranging in age from 15 to 22, we discovered how they experience the link between health and justice in their lives. Participants were living on the street, in extreme poverty, or both. Traumatic early childhood events continued to affect their ability to function healthily. We conclude and suggest that certain rights-based principles need to ground the development of interventions with this group.

Recently, in Canada, there was a push to replace existing youth legislation, entitled the Young Offenders Act (YOA). This push was a result of several perceived failures of the YOA and has culminated in a new piece of youth legislation, Bill C‐7: The Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA). The Department of Justice has stressed that the YCJA will rectify the substantive problems of the YOA. This policy paper provides an analysis of the claims of the Canadian government by focusing on the substantive sections of the YCJA, comparing the YCJA with the YOA, and incorporating social science research dealing with the probable effects of the innovations. Specifically, this analysis focuses on the use of extrajudicial sanctions, adult transfers and the decreased emphasis on due process rights in the YCJA. This short paper considers a response to requests from schools to help them when working with children who have been bereaved. It sets out a consideration of a more systematic way of providing teachers with a context in which they might address questions about death and how they might do so in a way that considers death as an event in which we are all involved and not one needing specialist intervention. The method outlined suggests that death can be incorporated across the British school curriculum into every subject already being taught and does not need to be either a specialist area, part of religious education or to be left to personal, social and health education. A small survey with children is included to illustrate children's own attitudes towards teaching death in schools.

Before 1994, there was not a common international approach to the protection of undisclosed business information and trade secrets. In a number of countries, particularly in Asia, there had even been no recognition or concept of a legal protection for information. However, three different approaches to the protection of business information had evolved — in the British Commonwealth, in Continental Europe and in the United States — and these approaches had influenced the development of laws in a number of other countries. Such legal protection, however, operated only at a national, rather than an international, level. The internationalisation of business and the growth in transborder flows of data meant that information had become an international commodity and needed an international solution to its increasing vulnerability.
