The relationship between childhood blood eosinophils and subtypes of allergic diseases remains understudied. This study aimed to examine the associations between childhood blood eosinophils and subtypes of asthma, rhinitis and dermatitis, as well as the modifying effect of age.We obtained concurrent blood cell counts and serum Immunoglobulin E (IgE) test results in 5026 children (0-13, years) from First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University from 2014 to 2019. Generalized additive models with multivariable adjustments were utilized to model the exposure-response relationship between eosinophils and allergic symptoms. The robustness of the association was assessed in two age categories (6, 6-13 years).The association of eosinophils with allergic asthma/rhinitis was positively nonlinear, with a plateau at levels of QHigher eosinophil counts were associated with the increased risk of allergic subtype symptoms and the decreased risk of non-allergic subtypes in children. Moreover, the associations between eosinophils and allergic asthma/rhinitis were accentuated in the school-aged child. These findings may contribute to providing novel insights for clinical administration relevance of allergic-related symptoms.Key messages:There was a positively nonlinear association between childhood eosinophils and allergic asthma/rhinitis.Age modified the associations between eosinophils and allergy-related outcomes. The associations of eosinophil with allergic asthma/rhinitis accentuated in the school-aged child (6-13, years).

Objectives: With aging, older adults are at risk of a decline in mental health as they experience significant life stressors that are specific to later life. It is thus important to explore the potential of suitable approaches that promote healthy aging, to address the mental health needs of older adults. Pet ownership has been found to be associated with positive mental health outcomes; however, there is limited research on the lived experience and meaning derived from pet ownership. The purpose of this study was to explore pet ownership in community-dwelling older adults and its influence on mental health.Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 community-dwelling older adults who were aged 65 and above and pet owners. Participants were interviewed individually on a single occasion about the meaning derived from the role of pet ownership and howthey perceived that their pet influenced their mental health.Results: Results were analysed using Colaizzi's phenomenological framework and four themes emerged from the interviews: pets provide (i) comfort and safety; (ii) social inclusion and participation; (iii) purposeful routine and structure; and (iv) a meaningful role.Conclusion: These findings suggest that the role of pet ownership may benefit community-dwelling older adults by providing companionship, giving a sense of purpose and meaning, reducing loneliness and increasing socialisation. These benefits may also increase resilience in older adults against mental health disorders, which may positively influence their mental health outcomes.

The application of solar drying (SD) and heat pump-assisted solar drying (HPSD) on the retention of flavonoid components, total color changes, and water activity of Clinacanthus nutans Lindau leaves were investigated. Analysis of data shows significantly higher extractable yield and flavonoid (orientin and vitexin) percentage during the drying with HPSD. The same drying technique also revealed optimum color values and low water activity. Thin-layer models fitted to the experimental data show that Hii and Law model is suitable for SD, while logarithmic model is able to give a good fit to HPSD.

Processing methods of Misai Kucing still remain crude and lack technological advancements. In terms of drying, very few studies have attempted to apply advanced drying technology to improve Misai Kucing quality and drying time. This paper presents first attempt to improve Misai Kucing drying kinetics and product quality through solar-assisted heat pump drying and comparison was made against solar drying. Experimental results showed that solar-dried samples had the greatest total color change and loss of two bioactive ingredients as compared to solar-assisted heat pump-dried samples due to its longer time process, higher drying temperature, and chlorophyll degradation. By comparing the statistical values, it showed that the Page model had the best goodness of fit at all tested dried samples by both drying methods.

An even span solar greenhouse dryer was built and applied to dry Java tea (Orthosiphon aristatus) and Sabah snake grass (Clinacanthus nutans Lindau). Findings showed that the solar greenhouse dryer performs satisfactorily during clear weather except at nighttime and rainy day due to product rehydration which is heavily influenced by high relative humidity from ambient air. Integrating of heat pump into the solar greenhouse dryer has successfully reduced the room relative humidity by 10–15%. Also, heat pump has mitigated the product rehydration issue by maintaining room relative humidity at maximum of 65% throughout the drying period. The drying rate of Java tea was improved three to fourfold, i.e., from 0.004–0.008 to 0.018–0.025 g H2O/g DM min, whereas 10% of drying time was saved for both Java tea leaf and Sabah snake grass leaf with the assistance of heat pump system. Drying is one of the essential processing steps for dried edible bird’s nest; however, sialic acid and antioxidant can be highly thermosensitive and unstable. Therefore, aim of this study was to determine the degradation kinetics of sialic acid and antioxidants during low-temperature drying at 25–40°C as compared to conventional hot air-drying at 70°C. These compounds’ degradation exhibited first-order kinetics. Sialic acid and antioxidant retentions were 83.9 and 96.6%, respectively, at 25°C, and 78.7 and 91.5% at 40°C, respectively, by low-temperature drying; while, 42.5 and 38.7%, respectively, at 70°C by conventional hot air-drying. Finally, empirical models were significantly fitted to predict sialic acid and antioxidant retention as edible bird’s nest reached a certain level of drying, which may be useful from the processing standpoint and validate the usage of low-temperature drying as a process tool for retention of sialic acid and antioxidant in edible bird’s nest.

This paper aims to study the influence of temperature and relative humidity (RH) during intermittent heat pump drying at 28.6–40.6°C, 16.2–26.7% RH, α = 0.2–1.0, and the comparison was made against fan drying (27°C, 39.7% RH, α = 1.00). It was observed that the effects of temperature and RH on drying rate were significant when moisture content was high. Experimental results showed that intermittent heat pump drying at 28.6°C, 26.7% RH, α = 0.2 of edible bird’s nest greatly reduced effective drying time by 84.2% and color change compared to fan drying, and retained the good energy efficiency.

This article presents the authors’ first attempt to improve quality of edible bird’s nest through continuous and intermittent low-temperature drying (25 and 40°C) with infrared and ultraviolet C (UVC) treatments. The attributes of quality were compared in regard to quality of hot-air-dried samples at 70–90°C. Experimental results showed that a significant improvement in the quality of edible bird’s nest in terms of minimizing color changes and rehydration capacity using intermittent low-temperature drying with infrared and UVC drying profile. However, it was also found that any drying method has less significant effect on the nitrite content of edible bird’s nest.

The effects of tray side on the performance of lyophilization of pharmaceuticals in vials arranged in clusters of hexagonal arrays on trays are studied and the results of this work indicate that it would be beneficial to operate the freeze drying process by employing freeze dryers whose trays have no tray sides and using heat input control that runs the lyophilization process close to the melting and scorch temperature constraints during the primary and secondary drying stages, respectively.

The dynamic behavior of the primary and secondary drying stages of the lyophilization process were studied when (a) single vials located at different positions on the tray were individually being dried, and (b) the vials on the tray are arranged in clusters of square and hexagonal arrays and all the vials on the tray are simultaneously being dried. For both cases (a) and (b), fast drying times and relatively more uniform distributions of temperature and concentration of bound water at the end of the secondary drying stage are obtained by heat input control that runs the lyophilization process close to the melting and scorch temperature constraints. The heating control policies for the systems of case (b) are found to be more conservative and significantly more complex than those for the systems of case (a), because in case (b) there are vials on the tray that are in their secondary drying stage while other vials on the same tray have not yet completed their primary drying stage.
