Since 2004 and the enlargement of the EU, increased migration from Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries to the UK necessitates sustained research on the implications for children, their families and practitioners in the early years. This paper draws upon a sociocultural approach to bring into focus family story-sharing practices. We report findings from an interpretivist study to foreground the experiences of two families living in Scotland. The findings indicate that story-sharing practices can potentially be a meeting place for early childhood practitioners to engage with children’s linguistic and cultural heritage and can provide opportunities to listen to and build upon diverse cultural traditions. The findings also highlight that children’s sense of their cultural and individual identities, as well as their sense of belonging, entail a complex set of interactions and that embedding them into curricula and pedagogy requires a sensitive criticality and open dialogue between practitioners, children and families. As a result of the findings, it is recommended that early years practitioners build upon story-sharing practices as a means to engage critically with issues of culture and identity and to facilitate the participation of CEE children and families in early years settings.

We explore the effect of the UK’s economic links with Central-Eastern Europe and China in the case of the Brexit referendum. First, replicate and independently verify the Colantone and Stanig findings (2018a) on the effect of globalization on Brexit. Then, we extend their original analysis and demonstrate that although both Chinese and Central-Eastern European imports were significant causal determinants of the referendum’s outcome, exposure to Central-Eastern European imports was up to three times more important than exposure to Chinese imports. This may be due to cultural correlates of trade. Our analysis reveals that differences in media coverage between Central-Eastern European and Chinese economic news, as well as migrant population shares from these two regions, might have played a decisive role. Overall, the article also suggests that the import-shock method, as currently applied in the literature, is ill-suited to compare shocks with diverse origins.

The complex institutional, economic, and societal trends that have characterized the post-socialist transition in Central and Eastern European countries have drastically reshaped urban development. The case of Budapest shows that three decades of nearly exclusive market-driven urban policies have resulted in a variety of social, spatial and environmental deficiencies. Existing research on media and the COVID-19 pandemic is largely based on quantitative data, focused on digital media, limited to single-country studies, and often West-centred. As such, it has limited capacity to provide a holistic account of the causes and consequences of audience engagement with COVID-19 news, or to consider the impact of systemic political and media factors. To compensate for that, we examine a large set of qualitative interviews and media diaries collected in four eastern European countries during the first wave of the pandemic. We show that changes in news consumption – including the resurgence of television and decline of print consumption – were not driven solely by audience demand for up-to-date information, but also by practical constrains of home-bound life in lockdown, and the introduction of live briefings. Our findings underscore disruption and uncertainty as key elements of audience experiences and highlight the markedly privatized and depoliticized nature of public debate in the early phase of the pandemic. We argue that the pandemic was an unpredictable, open-ended, and exhausting media event with high potential for divisiveness and polarization, especially in contexts marked by low levels of media freedom, declining democratic standards, and elite-led politicization of the crisis.

The paper focuses on the trade performance of Romania, a representative country for the Central and Eastern European region, strongly connected with its European partners in global value chains and thus affected by any change in these countries’ relationships with the rest of the world in general and China in particular. Using panel data gravity models for the 2008-2019 period, we find that Romania’s exports are significantly influenced by the demand of its major trade partners in the EU, and imports from China and the rest of the world. In addition, exports are vulnerable to the effectiveness of the government in relation to the other countries, corruption control and cultural values such as collectivism. We also assess the capacity of Romanian exports to regain their ascending trend displayed before the COVID-19 pandemic by using simulation forecasting scenarios based on the shape of the economic recovery and the type of shock transmission across economies. We observe a sharp decrease in 2020 followed by an important recovery in 2021 in a V-shape scenario and uniform transmission of the pandemic shock in the internal demand and in the foreign trade, or followed by a very slow recovery in 2021 (in a U-shape scenario and non-uniform transmission type in the two previously mentioned elements), especially when the global relation with rest of the world is included.

OBJECTIVES The objective of this analysis was to assess the effectiveness and safety of romiplostim in the real-world by duration of primary immune thrombocytopenia (ITP): 12 ('chronic') months. METHODS This was a post-hoc analysis of the PLATON single-arm, observational cohort study of adults from five Central and Eastern European countries receiving ≥1 romiplostim dose as second-line therapy, or where surgery was contraindicated. Durable (≥75% of measurements with ≥50 × 109 platelets/L during weeks 14-24) and overall platelet response (≥30 or ≥50 × 109 platelets/L at least once), rescue therapy, bleeding, discontinuation of other ITP medications, and adverse drug reactions (ADRs) were assessed. RESULTS Of 100 participants, 22.0% had newly diagnosed, 17.0% had persistent, and 61.0% had chronic ITP. Prior splenectomy was most frequently reported in chronic ITP (32.8%), prior bleeding was predominant in newly diagnosed patients (68.2%). Durable platelet response was achieved in 50.0% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 28.2-71.8%) of newly diagnosed, 35.3% (95% CI: 14.2-61.7%) of persistent, and 31.1% (95% CI: 19.9-44.3%) of chronic ITP patients. Overall platelet response was achieved in >80% across all strata. Safety was comparable across groups, with a low incidence of thrombotic ADRs and no bone marrow ADRs. DISCUSSION In this real-world study, platelet response to romiplostim was consistent across all strata of ITP duration. ADRs were infrequent and similar across ITP settings. CONCLUSION These findings support the utilization of romiplostim in patients with newly diagnosed and persistent ITP in accordance with recent guidelines and the recent romiplostim label extension.

Since 1989, Eastern European cities have been radically refashioned, often with kitsch new buildings accompanying the introduction of market capitalism. Modernist spaces built during socialism in Bulgaria and Macedonia, to manifest progress, were supplanted by new “baroque” architecture designed to symbolize wealth, independence, and freedom. Unlike socialist spaces, however, neo-baroque aesthetics failed to capture the imaginations of local residents, especially urban professionals. For those involved in urban management, we argue that neo-baroque buildings came to embody the corruption and loss of urban planning standards that accompanied the privatization of socialist cities and the emergence of a mafia-connected entrepreneurs. Impossible to avoid and derided internationally, neo-baroque buildings became a tangible sign of the transitional process that belied citizens’ hopes for European integration and provoked a sense of economic oppression.

This article explains recent changes in the negotiation dynamics concerning EU asylum policies, the policy failure in the Common European Asylum System and the deadlock in its post-2016 reform. Combining the Core State Power framework with the literature on punctuated equilibria and bounded rationality, it argues that EU asylum policies have important redistributive implications. In earlier phases, these were concealed by a regulatory policy-making approach which depoliticised EU legislation in that area. The 2015 asylum crisis demonstrated that this approach failed to produce the expected integration and entailed an even unfairer distribution of asylum-seekers, hence leading to information updating among Member States. Together with the ascent of right-wing populism in many Member States, this has fundamentally changed the negotiation dynamics from a situation with a few dominant Member States to a highly politicised environment in which previously passive Member States acted either as promoters or as blockers, thus producing deadlock.
