A main drawback of classical Tikhonov regularization is that often the parameters required to apply theoretical results, e.g., the smoothness of the sought-after solution and the noise level, are unknown in practice. In this paper we investigate in new detail the residuals in Tikhonov regularization viewed as functions of the regularization parameter. We show that the residual carries, with some restrictions, the information on both the unknown solution and the noise level. By calculating approximate solutions for a large range of regularization parameters, we can extract both parameters from the residual given only one set of noisy data and the forward operator. The smoothness in the residual allows to revisit parameter choice rules and relate a-priori, a-posteriori, and heuristic rules in a novel way that blurs the lines between the classical division of the parameter choice rules. All results are accompanied by numerical experiments.

By examining the census records of Swedish-Caribbean colony St. Barthélemy, a GIS - Geographic Information System - can be constructed which maps the inhabitants of the harbor city of Gustavia, as well as the inhabitants' placement within the census categories of the colonial administration. This article examines these categories and how they shifted over time, as well as maps out patterns of settlement across the city. One major finding is the division between the Catholic French-Caribbean side on the east and the Anglican Anglo- and Dutch-Caribbean side of the west, the latter of which was home to a number of merchants owning high amounts of enslaved people. This spatial division was also parallel to the political differences between the merchant elite and the Swedish colonial administration. Furthermore, this article encourages additional GIS studies of predemocratic Caribbean cities, particularly regarding spatial division between whites and free people of color.

Soil moisture plays a crucial role in the assessment of weather patterns and analyzing the precipitation. The moisture analysis in the soil surface has been most efficient with passive remote sensing. The study attempts extraction of soil moisture and quantifying it with rainfall. The Marathwada division was selected as the study area, the region corresponds to low rainfall and is a drought-prone area. The data used were AMSR-E/Aqua Daily L3 gridded soil moisture and CHRS rainfall data, the daily product of 25 km×25 km resolution. The methodology was demonstrated for the years 2003, 2004, and 2005. A cumulative 122 AMSR-E daily ascending and descending scenes were retrieved and analyzed for the rainy season. The spatial analysis depicts peak soil moisture of 25% for the year 2005, greater than 20%, and 18% during 2003 and 2004, respectively. Peak moisture corresponding to all years is 20% in July compared to 13%, 17%, and 16% in June, August, and September, respectively. The temporal analysis revealed that during the onset of monsoon, soil moisture is 4% with 1.5 mm rainfall and it increases by 25% at peak rainfall of 39 mm. The soil moisture variation is in line with seasonal changes and rainfall variations.

The UK’s referendum on EU membership that resulted in a narrow minority in favour of leave was followed by a leadership vacuum and intense debate about the implementation of the result. The politicization over Brexit resulted in the development of ‘Brexit identities’ of Remainers and Leavers that superseded party identities. We argue that in order to understand how this politicization took place despite a leadership vacuum we firstly need to look beyond the arena of formal party politics to more informal arenas of political contestation on social media, especially Facebook, and secondly understand the linkages between EU and national level politicization that polarised the country around new British-specific identities. Through this, we analyse the ‘politics of division’ not simply as a form of contentious politics driven by political parties, but as a social conflict driven by non-institutionalised groups, grassroots campaigns and ordinary citizens. We find evidence of significant mobilisation that extends beyond the realm of party politics but argue that this mobilisation cannot necessarily be considered entirely ‘grassroots’. Rather, it is driven not just by citizens but also shaped by mainstream and alternative media platforms. The debates cannot, however, be considered purely a form of EU politicization, rather, analysis of Facebook comments shows that politicization over Brexit through these campaigns is primarily contestation over the nature and legitimacy of British democracy. Because of this, we argue that social media is an essential site for the study of EU politicization and political campaigns in general.

We examined the type of errors on multiplication and division computation problems of 326 rising fifth graders enrolled in four elementary schools in Northern Portugal. We further examined whether there was a difference in the number of errors across age and whether there was an association between students' performance on number knowledge and multiplication and division computation problems. Error analysis of students' responses indicated that miscalculation and no attempt to solve the problem were the two most frequent error types. We found that older students made more errors compared to younger students. We argue that knowledge of individual student error types is critical to making sound instructional decisions. different active and passive post-exercise recovery techniques such as massage, foam rolling, stretching or ice baths among others, are used by elite athletes to promote effective physiological, physical, and mental restoration. However, limited research is available investigating the use of recovery strategies in professional soccer. As such, we aimed to explore and describe the use of strategies by professional teams throughout the season, describing competitive and preparatory phases.the present study collected data from all professional Spanish soccer teams who played in 'LaLiga' (The Spanish first division), during the season 2018-2019 (n = 20) and the ones promoted for the season 2019-2020 (n = 3). A six-section online survey was responded once.teams used different recovery protocols and combinations, although natural and physical strategies such as sleep/nap, food/fluid replacement, cold/ice bath/shower/immersion, and massage were always present. However, there is no agreement in the protocols and timings employed. Three physical strategies showed a higher presence in the recovery protocols after competition: cold/ice bath/shower/immersion, massage and foam rolling; always used by seventeen teams (74%), sixteen (70%) and thirteen (57%) respectively. The design and supervision of recovery are multidisciplinary tasks in 87% of the teams. Our findings also demonstrate that although there is a body of scientific evidence on recovery, a gap between theory and practice exists with 13% of the teams acknowledging that insufficient logistics and economic resources limit the use of some strategies, and two teams (9%) not periodizing or individualizing recovery.the investigation provided insight into the current use of recovery strategies by 'LaLiga' teams, highlighting that all clubs used them to one extent or another, but also that significant variability responding to individualized perceptions exists. Moreover, this study provides relevant contextual information that may be useful for professional soccer staff concerning the use of recovery strategies.
