Multiplier effects play a major role in determining importance of a sector of interest to the national economy. In order to determine the significance of Croatian transport sectors, in this paper input-output analysis was applied. A comparative analysis of type I and type II output, gross value added and employment multipliers based on input-output tables for Croatian economy for the year 2010 and 2015 was performed. Type I multipliers were calculated based on the open IO model. Closed IO model was used in type II multipliers determination. Results indicate that sector code H49—Land transport services and transport services via pipelines and sector code H50— water transport services in the year 2015 recorded lower type I and type II output, gross value added and employment multipliers compared to the year 2010. For sector code H51—Air transport services, significant growth in terms of all three economic indicators was detected, especially when interest is focused on type I and type II employment multipliers. Results presented in this paper could be valuable for academia and general public because they reflect multipliers estimation of transport sectors in Republic of Croatia for the first time based on sound macroeconomic analysis tool.

The academic picture of a globalized European countryside, and particularly of rural areas in post-socialist new member states of European Union, is that of huge and increasing complexity, diversity, and uncertainties about the future. The aim of this research is to construct alternative scenarios for rural Croatia in 2030, acknowledging its post-socialist transition as an important framework. Future development scenarios were constructed by integrating quantitative and qualitative approaches. The main methods used were: factor and cluster analysis, Monte Carlo simulation, and Delphi method, involving 37 rural experts in two rounds of written questionnaires. Four scenarios were developed: Rural Renaissance ; Shift ; Road to Nowhere ; and Growth without Development. These scenarios provide a set of well-documented and reasonable assumptions to aid in thinking about the possible future paths for the Croatian countryside, while at the same time allowing for a discussion on rural development paradigms.

Since the school year 2006/2007 in Croatian primary schools the music teaching programme has been an open model. According to the open model, listening to music is the default activity, while other activities are selected by the teachers. The teaching area of listening to music in pupils develops the ability of auditory concentration, hearing specifications, analysis of the listened work and establishes basic aesthetic criteria for evaluating music. This paper presents research findings aimed at examining what are teachers’ attitudes about listening to music as an area of music teaching. The results show that listening to music is very often carried out in music teaching and that the teachers’ competences for conducting these activities are very good. Teachers are aware of the importance of listening to music as a teaching area, although in their view it is the least attractive to the target group, which are the pupils. This is due to pupils’ disinterest in listening to music. Because teachers are not provided with sufficient content in the field of music as part of professional development and lifelong learning, teachers are unable to enhance their competencies further and extend their methodological knowledge in the field of music listening.

This paper explores public views about police integrity and contrasts them with the police views about police integrity. It also compares citizen and police officer views about the police. A modified version of the police integrity survey, containing 14 hypothetical vignettes describing various forms of police misconduct, was distributed to both students and police officers in Croatia. The respondents in the study, 1, 142 police officers from Croatia and 450 students from the University of Zagreb, shared their views of how serious most police officers would evaluate misconduct, the expected discipline, and whether they would report the described misconduct. The results suggest not only that students expressed less positive views of the police than police officers themselves did, but also that students expressed attitudes associated with somewhat lower integrity than police officers did.

The aim of this article is to analyse the Croatian economic diplomacy model to identify the model, revealing its effectiveness and providing possible recommendations for the future research in the area of economic diplomacy. Literature review for Croatia indicates an overall lack of national research on the subject matter from the empirical point of view. Such situation is partially a result of economic diplomacy being a new phenomenon in Croatia and with Croatian political structure struggling many years with internal public administration reorganisation, privatisation process and joining the European Union. Occasional theoretical approaches are presented with analysis coming from the questionnaire surveys. The empirical research contribution of the article highlights the Croatian volume of export of goods and its connection with diplomatic actors. The research is based on the gravity model of international trade and presents empirical findings in the analysis of Croatian economic diplomacy and its effectiveness regarding the Croatian export of goods. The research model confirms positive relationship between Croatian total exports and three independent variables: GDP, distance and staff employed in diplomatic mission.

Research on incoming productions has shown the complex picture of transnational power relations between governments, (multinational) media companies and the global network of precarious workers. Drawing on the findings of a case study on the introduction of the Production Incentive (PI) programme within the audio-visual policy in Croatia, this paper shows that the effectiveness of this policy instrument depends on the following socioeconomic factors: the policy and industry infrastructure characteristics of the small-scale AV sector, the volatility of politics, the informality of the work relations and weak unionisation. Both positive and negative aspects of the introduction of the PI emphasise the fragility of the Croatian small-scale AV industry in the context of the global creative economy. This opens up questions on the limits of the growth of PI as a policy instrument and its influence on further building of a sustainable audio-visual sector in Croatia.

In the 1980s, in the period before the collapse of Yugoslavia, football stadiums became one of the most important public spaces in which forbidden and suppressed discourses were exposed. Correspondingly, it has been widely accepted that the state repressive apparatus perceived football supporter groups as an exceptionally dangerous political opponent to the socialist system. However, according to the analysis of archival materials from the Yugoslav secret service Croatian supporters per se were not perceived as such. Supporter groups were approached primarily as subculture actors with a special system of social norms and values. This is evident from a 1989 operative investigation codenamed ‘Stadion’, the purpose of which was to surveil four of the largest Croatian supporter groups. The surveillance of supporters began mainly as a consequence of the foundation of the first opposition political parties. This increased the possibility that supporter groups would be instrumentalized, which was a real potential danger from the perspective of the secret service.

The legal autonomy in religious and ecclesiastical affairs enjoyed by the Kingdom of Croatia and Slavonia enabled the regulation of the status of Jews. Since representatives of the Croatian Jewish communities did not participate in the 1868–69 Hungarian Jewish Congress, its decisions were not formally binding upon them. Nevertheless, the Congress and its outcomes resulted in the separation of the local communities into Orthodox and Neolog ones, and the legal and political resolution of the pending issues pertaining to their split resulted in the application of the Congress’s decisions.

Within the Croatian educational system, the school readiness programme is defined by the obligation of attending a pre-school curriculum in the year before school. Besides facilitating the transition into school, the programme also focuses on the development of early literacy skills, where play has a significant role. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyse the types of play being applied during this pre-school programme. Forty- two future educators (third-year students) and eight early childhood educators participated in the study. Qualitative methodology was used in the analysis of the students’ written preparation within the course Language-Communication Integrated Curriculum. It was found that most students independently developed incentives and use different types of play in their planning. Quantitative methodology was used to analyse collected data from observing educators enaging through different types of play, and similar results were determined. These findings suggest a positive impact on the development of early literacy skills and children's well-being. Since the different play activities did not carry equal elements of early literacy, the study has strong implications for the modification of educators’ study programmes in Croatia.

Objectives: In spite of growing concerns about adolescents’ pornography use, research on problematic pornography use (PPU) in this population is scarce. Method: We examined the structure and prevalence of PPU symptoms across 6 months in 337 male Croatian adolescents. Results: Network analysis indicated that associations among PPU symptoms were highly stable, which was not the case with being at risk for PPU. Less than 5% of the panel participants appeared to be at risk for PPU. Conclusions: This study’s findings may help increase awareness and reduce moral panic about PPU among parents and teachers, and inform emerging pornography literacy programs.

Aim: To evaluate the health-related life quality of patients after surgically treated midface fractures. ----- Patients and methods: This retrospective cohort study compared the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) scores of 42 male patients following surgically treated maxillary or zygomatic fractures with the reported normative data of the SF-36 for the Croatian population. ----- Results: The current study showed that the health-related life quality of surgically treated patients was comparable to similar age, gender, and regional demographics in the Croatian population norm. However, we revealed a significant deterioration of the "Emotional wellbeing" domain in younger patients (P = 0.03) and a severely affected domain of "Physical functioning" in older patients (P = 0.049). ----- Conclusion: There was a significant negative psychological impact from facial trauma on younger patients. In contrast, older patients were more prone to physical impairment. Therefore, follow-up visits are an opportunity to screen and refer younger patients to mental health services in a timely manner to prevent severe psychological difficulties and an opportunity to identify older patients who require physical therapy.

The Balkan refugee corridor was active in 2015 and 2016 in order to facilitate and control the movement of refugees towards their destination countries in the EU. In this article, the Slavonski Brod camp, a kind of obligatory stopover in the Croatian section of the Balkan corridor, is approached as a site where the concept of a “lone child” in migration was defined and re-defined in practice.After presenting a short overview of the corridor and the camp, and the genealogy of the concept of the child traveling alone, the article discusses the procedures and practices regarding the position of such a child in this unique form of the European migration regime. The article focuses on the interrelation between changing norms of the corridor and conceptualization/ behavior of “lone child” in migration. In that framework we follow the transformation of child traveling alone as privileged humanitarian subject to the child traveling alone as competent social actor.

This study aimed to investigate the presence of eight biogenic amines (BAs): tryptamine (TRP), phenylethylamine (PHE), putrescine (PUT), cadaverine (CAD), histamine (HIS), tyramine (TYR), spermidine (SPD) and spermine (SPM) in cheese, fish & fishery products and meat & meat products obtained from the Croatian retail market. A selective and robust method of highperformance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with diode array detection (DAD) was applied for the determination of BAs in a total of 91 samples in accordance with the performance criteria outlined in the European legislation. A high inter- and intra-food group variability of the amounts of BAs was observed. In the analysed samples, the most represented amines were TYR, HIS, CAD and PUT. Based on the highest content of the most toxic BAs (HIS and TYR) and consequential food safety concerns, the studied food groups can be ranked in the following order: cheese (HIS up to 106.4 mg/kg ; TYR up to 206.6 mg/kg), fish &fishery products (HIS up to 98.8 mg/kg ; TYR up to 47.9 mg/kg), and meat & meat products (HIS up to 20.0 mg/kg ; TYR up to 117.5 mg/kg). The total BA content was significantly higher (p < .05) in fermented in comparison with other food. The study aimed to contribute to the knowledge on BA toxicity and food quality, as well as to support the indispensable future studies of consumption data and exposure assessment, to the end of defining allowable BA concentrations in food.

The European Union poultry meat market is the subject of numerous research studies due to its importance in the EU's total agricultural production, exports and food security. With 14.5 million tons of poultry meat production in 2016, the EU-28 is one of the world's leading producers of this kind of meat (approximately 12%). The Old Member States (EU-15) and the New Member States (EU-13) generate 73.8% and 26.2% of the total EU poultry meat production, respectively. The average poultry meat consumption in the EU- 28 is currently approximately 24 kg per capita. In the last decade, the EU's poultry meat market has seen structural changes in production, consumption and trade that are the subject of the partial equilibrium model analysis. Results of mid-term projections for the poultry meat market through to the year 2030 showed a decrease in production volume in the EU-15, along with a slowdown of domestic and per capita consumption and a change of status from net exporters to net importers of poultry meat. Meanwhile, in the EU-13 there has been a steady growth in the volume of production and domestic and per capita consumption of poultry meat. The EU-13 Member States will remain net exporters through 2030, with a strong trend in export growth. Croatia, the youngest member state, follows trends in the domestic poultry meat market that are similar to the rest of the EU- 13. Until 2030, Croatian poultry meat production is expected to increase by 43.02%, the domestic consumption by 29.37% and per capita consumption for 39.89%. Although Croatia will remain a net importer by the end of the 2030, the gap in net trade deficit is expected to decrease by 31.31%.

The present article enquiries into the formation of Croatian national identity and regional bordering processes traced in the post-1989s Croatian literary narratives. During the 1990s self-identification debates mainly reflected perception of Croatian national belonging as distinct from the Balkans and European oriented. From 2000 until 2013 when Croatia received full European Union membership, the articulation of ‘national’ was altered and correlated with new socio-geographic imaginaries linking Croatia with ‘Mitteleuropa’, the Mediterranean and the post-Yugoslav space. The changes in articulation of Croatian national identity can be seen in the changing rhetoric of literary narratives where the legacy of prominent Croatian and former Yugoslav writer Miroslav Krleža is a transversal element. The aim of this article is to explicate the relevance of Croatian literary narratives for the geopolitical research of national identity and bordering processes referring to the macro-regional level.

The paper deals with the efficiency dynamics of the Croatian banking industry, covering the period from 2006 to 2015. We have implemented the intermediation approach, using interest and non-interest expenses and revenues as the input and output variables, respectively. The variable return to scale (BCC) Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) output-oriented model has been implemented, and we have estimated the crisis-driven efficiency trends, as well as the impact of the EU membership. We further estimated the efficiency effects of the relative market power/size, ownership structure, and origin of capital. The global crisis had detrimental effects since the overall efficiency score dropped by about 3%. On the contrary, Croatian banks have largely benefited from the EU membership, and the efficiency score after the EU association increased by about 45%. The market leaders are more efficient than the competitive fringe, which is in line with the efficiency structure hypothesis. In addition, the biggest banks are the most efficient ones, meaning that the scale efficiency hypothesis has also been upheld. Contrary to the agency theory hypothesis, state-owned banks are permanently more efficient than private banks. Finally, the results support the home-field advantage hypothesis exclusively for the pre-crisis period (2006–2009).

Given that the goal of this study was to examine the influence of different factors on a firm’s profitability, we designed a model with three categories of profitability determinants: firm-specific, industry-specific and macroeconomic. The analysis was performed on 9359 firms operating in the Croatian manufacturing industry during the 2006–2015 period. Since the designed model was formulated in a way that encompasses the dynamic aspect of profitability, the General Method of Moments (G.M.M.) dynamic panel estimator was applied. Formulation of such a model adds to the existing literature if one takes into account that a dynamic analysis of the drivers of profitability has not been done using data from the Croatian manufacturing sector. The results of the conducted analysis revealed that a firm’s age, labour cost and industry concentration, as well as G.D.P. growth and inflation, have significant influence on a firm’s profitability.

Many borderlands have violent histories and therefore are focal sites for studying national war heritage and selective memory politics. The starting point of this paper is that when heritage becomes the institutionalized memory of a nation it simultaneously produces bordering and re-bordering effects in time and place. In heritage making some events and lives are understood to be worth commemorating simultaneously silencing the experiences of others. Yet heritage also offers possibilities to reconcile the different versions of traumatic historical events. In this paper, the analysis of heritage as bordering focuses on the town of Vukovar (Croatia) and on Raate Road (Finland) that both have gained symbolic meaning in the production of nationhood. It shows that multiple versions of bordering are materializing in the landscape of heritage in both borderlands. Although the hegemonic national narrative is strongly present in heritage making and commercialization, there are attempts to connect the national heritage to a more transnational, humanitarian and Europeanized version of heritage. The previously silenced voices of traumatized soldiers and families have also gained more recognition alongside the national heroic narrative. The competing versions of bordering often arouse ontological insecurity, however, transnational heritage making may offer possibilities for reconciliation.

In Croatia, state legislation on milk production has a significant effect on how farmer–microbial relations unfold in milk production. Notably, the shape these relations take on those dairy farms that follow state legislation is quite different to the shape of farmer–microbial relations on farms that do not. In this article, the author starts by offering ethnographic examples of farmer–microbial relations on both “types” of farms. Then, using Bruno Latour’s definition of the Pasteurian as a “revealer of microbes,” she argues that one can readily identify those farms that follow state legislation as taking a Pasteurian approach. The other farms, however, are more difficult to define. They can be described as neither post-Pasteurian, nor pre-Pasteurian. Therefore, the author proposes that the notion of “a-Pasteurian” is the most apposite way to describe their relations with microbes. She then spends the last part of the article further considering the a-Pasteurian approach.

It is often maintained that factors such as the multifarious and exigent nature of the police profession, the diversity of police personnel, and the dissimilar socioeconomic and political settings which surround the sphere of policing, fragment the shared values, beliefs, and norms of police officers. As a result, the spatiality and saliency of such values (police culture), is doubted, if not denied. Such being the case, the article sets out to examine whether or not police culture, as documented to exist in Anglo-American police organisations, is reflected in two disparate settings, namely the Croatian and Cyprus Police. For attesting the foregoing, quantitative research was undertaken in these two settings. Upon analysing the responses of novice law enforcers (n = 185), it was found that the core constituents of police culture (isolation, suspicion, brotherhood, and cynicism), besides cynicism – which was partially supported – manifested in both police organisations.

Post-war experimental and conceptual photography in former Yugoslavia has only rarely been the subject of more detailed study and interpretation. In considering this period, it is necessary to take into account several factors, including the absence of permanent exhibition spaces for photography, the lack of magazines in which photographic themes were continuously presented and discussed, the impossibility of studying the field of photography and, finally, the inadequate knowledge and application of contemporary criticism and theories of photography. Nevertheless, from the mid-1950s onwards it is possible to note a variety of innovations in the field, both in terms of form and subject-matter. In this article, I will consider rare instances of institutional support for progressive photography-related events and unique, intellectual-poetic works. After the break-up of Yugoslavia, there is a dominant tendency to nationalize art created in the former state thus ignoring the specific Yugoslav cultural field as well as the European context. Based on a methodology which surpasses the national (but still acknowledges it) and searches for meaning within the broader socio-political space to which art is referring, my research aims to change the paradigm of the peripheral position and general ignorance of the circumstances under which this innovative practice emerges.

This paper researches students’ and teacher trainees’ personal experience of student-centred teaching during their education in grades 1–4 of primary school. The questionnaire comprised 45 statements and was completed by 403 primary school teacher trainees and 535 students (future teachers) at Faculties of Teacher Education in Croatia. The research results show that students do not have sufficient prior experience that they could use as inspiration in their future teaching practice and that in the course of their education they were mainly exposed to traditional approach to teaching. The majority of teacher trainees are aware of the importance of student-centred teaching although they cannot fully give up the control of students and educational process. This research opens up the issue of a paradigm change within the teaching system and education in Croatia as well as the issue of changes within education and professional development of teachers.

Production processes are becoming increasingly fragmented and dispersed for producers in different geographical areas as a result of international integration and trade liberalisation. The aim of this paper is to estimate direct and indirect import content of Croatian industries and final demand and to compare the results with previous studies for European economies. Direct and indirect import content of final demand is estimated by an input-output model. The updated 2013 input-output table based on the bi-proportional adjustment of the rows and columns of the base technology matrix A (RAS method) is applied in order to account for changes in technical coefficients for domestic output and imports after European Union (EU) accession. The highest import content is estimated for sectors applying production technology that requires raw materials which are not available in sufficient quantities domestically, and sectors that produce high-tech or medium high-tech goods. The import content of public and personal services is low. The highest import content of domestic final demand is recorded for exports and gross fixed capital formation. In comparison to other new member-states, the Croatian economy is less internationally integrated and import dependence is more similar to results found for larger self-sufficient economies. Empirical results on the import content of different economic sectors could enhance the effectiveness of macroeconomic policies.

PURPOSE: To determine the prevalence of undesirable skin reactions to latex in dental professionals and students of the School of Dental Medicine in Zagreb, Croatia. METHODS: Our research included 444 participants, of which 200 agreed to undergo a skin prick test (SPT). All participants answered a questionnaire in which we asked about incidence of skin lesions, duration of occupational exposure to latex, localization of skin lesions and symptoms. Statistical analysis of the questionnaire and test results was then carried out. RESULTS: Of the total 444 participants surveyed, 249 (56.1%) reported lesions on their skin (professionals 64.8%, students 6.1-58.5%). From the questionnaire, 239 (96.0%) respondents reported lesions on the hands and fingers, mostly in the form of erythema (37.0%) and occasional dryness of skin (29.0%). Positive SPT results were found in 14 (7.0%) out of the 200 respondents who underwent the test. CONCLUSIONS: While a large number of subjects (56.1%) reported skin lesions when using latex products at their workplace, the SPT test was positive only in 7.0%. The results show that the prevalence of self-reported skin lesions was significantly related to the length of occupational exposure, with a substantial effect size (p < 0.001 ; V = 0.334).

This article focuses on fan responses to problems which professional football currently faces in Croatia. There is a high level of dissatisfaction with the Croatian Football Association (Hrvatski nogometni savez) among fans, alongside increasing anger and dissatisfaction that the media portray fans in a negative light. This paper focuses on two fan run initiatives in Zagreb – the first based on participatory and the second on direct democratic principles – to illustrate some of the methods fans have used to protest against the current situation and offer alternatives. The first section of the paper is focused on GNK Dinamo Zagreb’s Bad Blue Boys, describing fan practices deployed in the battle with Dinamo’s administration, with a focus on the phenomenon of Futsal Club Dinamo. The second section considers the fan run club NK Zagreb 041, which was partly formed by members of the White Angels, a small Zagreb based group with a left wing platform, who used to support NK Zagreb. We discuss the context that led to the formation of these two clubs, their organizational structure, fans practices in contemporary Croatian society and symbolic aspects relating to these newly formed clubs.

This paper is based on sociological research on Torcida, football supporters of Hajduk Football Club from Split (Croatia). We used ethnographic methodology throughout 37 months of fieldwork (from July 2012 to August 2015) and conducted 23 in-depth interviews with hardcore members of Torcida. Although our research included the distinction between carnival supporters and hooligans, these elements are much more interconnected within the hard core of Torcida than they are separate. Because of various social efforts (sometimes coordinated with other Ultras groups) against the local and global football establishment – especially against the Croatian Football Federation and UEFA – we consider Torcida part of a wide, heterogeneous social movement against modern football. This corresponds to the self-reflection and self- perception of the core group of Torcida. Ultras subculture in the Croatian context represents a key (although not the only) social actor in bearing the AMF movement.

This paper emphasizes the importance of developing pedagogical and didactic competencies of graduate students of teachers’ education, and certain problems they encountered in acquiring those competencies in the Croatian environment. The goal of the research was to examine the students’ (future teachers') assessments of the capability to work with children and their parents, assessment of possessing pedagogical–didactic competencies acquired in school, but also to emphasize the possibility of cooperation between teacher training institutions with institutions, and organizations engaged in informal forms of education. During research, the triangulation was used to approach the issue as objectively as possible. The survey, interviews of future teachers (N = 70) who volunteer teaching children (6–10 years), and analysed of lesson plans analyses (N = 180) which students and volunteers used as templates for teaching were used. Results showed that students have not sufficiently developed pedagogical–didactic competencies which, among others, resulted in fear of “entering” the classroom and insufficient willingness to work with special needs students.

Cyanobacterial communities of the splash zone of two Croatian islands, Veruda and Ugljan, were surveyed. At each island, we studied eight localities with different aspects. From all 336 samples, a total of 42 cyanobacterial species, one green alga, and one red alga were found. In both islands Hyella spp. and Gloeocapsopsis crepidinum dominated and Entophysalis deusta, Solentia spp., Kyrtuthrix dalmatica and Mastigocoleus testarum were found frequently. Multivariate statistical analysis of species composition shows that the vertical gradient is the strongest determinant of species composition and that there are statistically significant but not very pronounced differences in species composition between the two islands. The theory of National Innovation System emphasizes innovation as a source of economic and productivity growth and stresses the importance of collaboration between science and industry. The basic objective of this paper was to research whether there is an interaction between Croatian companies and scientific institutions, and whether it affects an increase of innovativeness of economic entities. The results of the performed empirical research and their econometric analysis indicate a conclusion that a positive impact of the collaboration on intensity of innovation in Croatian companies is still absent. The results indicate that the system of innovation in the Republic of Croatia, when compared to developed countries, is still in a transition and that commercialisation of academic knowledge is a phenomenon paid somewhat greater attention only recently.

to characterise the adverse drugs reactions (ADRs) reported in the Lombard and Croatian paediatric population and to compare data to specific paediatric age groups, in terms of trend, pattern and severity of ADRs, increasing understanding of paediatric ADRs.We selected and analysed all the spontaneous reports in which children were involved (0 18 years old) reported in the Lombardy and in Croatian pharmacovigilance databases from 19175 ADR reports were reported in the Lombardy, 2457 were included in the Croatian database. The age groups most involved were 2-11 for both countries. The 13.2% and 40.3% of reports retrieved in Lombardy and Croatia were classified as serious, respectively. Fatalities account for 0.09% and 0.12% in Lombardy and Croatia, respectively.Data on serious reports reflect a similar scenario in terms of age range; strikingly different therapeutic subgroups were involved in reporting activity likely due to greater self-medication practices with penicillins and anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretics drugs in Lombardy than in Croatia, highlighting the need to closely monitor this paediatric therapeutic area to ensure a safe use of these drugs.

This article deals with the relationship between the ethnic and societal security dilemmas on the one hand, and the way in which elites seek to prevent local-level cooperation through ‘costly signalling’, on the other. By analysing transcripts of tape-recorded conversations from the Security Council of the Republic of Croatia during the period 1992–95, the author shows that the Croatian elite based its initial strategy on the widespread fear that Croats would become dominated in an independent Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was during this phase that Franjo Tuđman and parts of the Bosnian Croat elite voiced the idea that parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina should—at least as a contingency—be joined with Croatia. This article deals with changes of form and meaning of the Croatian proverb ‘Odjeca ne cini covjeka covjekom’ (Clothes do not make the man). The analysis is done on the basis of its use in newspaper articles and spoken communication. Furthermore, the data are interpreted within the framework of cognitive semantics. The analysis shows that the proverb is often used in modified form and that it has changed its form from negative to positive. Most of the informants recognize its modified form ‘Odijelo ne cini covjeka’ (The suit does not make the man) as the original one. From the cognitive semantic point of view, changes analysed in relation to the concept of basic conceptual metaphor point to changes in the socio-cultural context and to perception of the importance of (outward) appearance.

In the literature on the Europeanisation of political parties and party systems, transnational party cooperation (TPC) is very often treated as a special and unique kind of Europeanisation of national political parties. Researchers emphasise its direct and more institutionalised character. The article investigates the impact of TPC on Croatian political parties, and tries to determine whether this cooperation has led to changes in the programmes and organisation of Croatian parties or furthered de-radicalisation of their stances. The article also explores whether party activists involved in cooperation with Europarties play an important role in the process of Europeanisation of their parent parties.

The present study investigated the relationship between psychopathic traits, risk-taking tendencies and gambling problem severity and if these associations varied by gender in a community sample of Croatian adolescents (N = 282 ; 148 males). Results of the regression analyses showed that the Impulsive-Irresponsible behavioural style (YPI-II) and the Grandiose-Manipulative interpersonal style (YPI-GM) were the strongest postdictors of gambling-related problems. Surprisingly, independently of the YPI-II dimension, the Callous-Unemotional traits were negatively associated to gambling-related problems. By, contrast, independently of the psychopathic traits, risk-tendencies were not significant postdictors of gambling problem severity. With respect to gender differences, higher levels of the YPI-II and YPI-GM dimensions were related to more severe gamblingrelated problems only in males, not in females. Furthermore, while the CU traits exhibited protective features against gambling- related problems in both genders, the effect was stronger for males than for females.

The Cape Stoba shipwreck is located on the seabed off the island of Mljet in Croatia at a depth of 21–28 m. Following initial investigation in 1975, four seasons of excavation have been carried between 2010 and 2014 by the Department for Underwater Archaeology of the Croatian Conservation Institute, joined by the Department of Studi Umanistici of the Universita Ca' Foscari of Venice from 2012. The wreck-site is evidenced by a cargo of nine amphora types dated to the 10th-11th century AD, produced in the Eastern Mediterranean and Black Sea area, and glassware of Levantine production. The only direct evidence of the ship itself to date, is one iron anchor. Apstraktna Brodolom kod rta Stoba nalazi se u podmorju otoka Mljeta u Hrvatskoj na dubini od 21–28 metara. Nakon pronalaska brodoloma i prvih istraživanja u 1975. godini, provedene su cetiri kampanje istraživanja u razdoblju od 2010. do 2014. godine od strane Odjela za podvodnu arheologiju Hrvatskog restauratorskog zavoda. Od 2012. godine u istraživanjima se pridružuju djelatnici Dipartimento di Studi Umanistici, Sveucilista 'Ca' Foscari u Veneciji. Brodolom sadrži ostatke trgovackog tereta s najmanje devet tipova amfora datiranih u 10./11. stoljece, proizvedenih na podrucju istocnog Mediterana i Crnoga mora te stakleno posuđe levantske proizvodnje. Pronađeno željezno sidro do sada je jedini nalaz izravno vezan uz brod. Astratto Il relitto di Cape Stoba e localizzato sui fondali dell'isola di Mljet in Croazia ad una profondita di 21–28 m. In seguito ad una prima indagine, eseguita nel 1975, tra il 2010 e il 2014 il Dipartimento di Archeologia Subacquea del Croatian Conservation Institute, dal 2012, in collaborazione con il Dipartimento di Studi Umanistici dell'Universita Ca' Foscari di Venezia, ha condotto quattro campagne di scavo. Il relitto presenta un carico di nove tipi di anfore datate al 10–11° secolo d.C., prodotte nel Mediterraneo Orientale e nell'area del Mar Nero, e vasi in vetro di produzione levantina. L'unica evidenza diretta della nave al momento e un'ancora in ferro.

This paper discusses in detail specific barriers to establishing energy efficiency policies in Croatian public buildings that affect the realisation of energy efficiency projects. Barriers were discovered after years of collaboration with public institutions in Croatia, especially at a local level. Although the information presented in this paper relates specifically to the geographical areas of Splitsko- Dalmatinska and Dubrovacko-Neretvanska counties in Croatia, the research can be generalised to the country as a whole. The paper also analyses the important role of the United Nations Development Programme in encouraging proactive energy efficiency policies in public buildings in Croatia. Finally, a new organisational framework is proposed to eliminate existing barriers and to establish a system which will lead to the effective realisation of energy efficiency projects in buildings. The research presented in this paper should also be useful to countries facing similar barriers to energy investments.

The purpose of this paper is to study how clustering affects the results of operations of small and medium hospitality enterprises (SMHEs) in Croatia and to support SMHEs tend to cluster, forming critical masses in one place, to take advantage of synergies such as increased productivity, a higher pace of innovation and in essence the possibility of becoming more competitive. What are clusters and in what way do they increase business performance and the competitiveness are frequently asked questions. The paper presents the results of the impact of clustering in SMHEs in the Republic of Croatia on business performance. The special focus is given to financial and non-financial indicators that are significant for measuring business performance in SMHEs. The methodology of research includes a literature search of clustering in hospitality enterprises research, collection of data directly from managers of SMHEs and from the Croatian Bureau of Statistics, analysis of the financial and non-financial data of 72 SMHEs in the Republic of Croatia. The research takes a longitudinal approach, examining SMHEs that are in clusters in Croatia over a two-year period as well as a control group of non-clustered SMHEs for comparison. The emphasis is on seeking to establish the impact of clustering on business performance. In this paper, the impact of clustering of 72 SMHEs involved in the study is discussed. The research has shown that the advantages of clustering in SMHEs have not been utilised in Croatia. The originality of this research is based on the fact that it refers to an area that has not been explored enough in the Republic of Croatia.

This paper discusses the interpretative framework that Serbian and Croatian historiographies on one side, and German historiographies on the other side, used when studying the past of the German minority in Yugoslavia. Pointing out a strong influence of ideologies on historical writing, the authors distinguish two periods with regard to this issue: ‘Cold War historiography’, from the end of the Second World War until the beginning of the 1990s; and ‘post-Cold War’, that is, contemporary historiography. Ideological antagonisms and personal experiences of contemporaries, which marked the Cold War historiography, have been gradually overcome during the past two decades, due to the revision of previous assessments in all three historiographies.

In this paper through the analysis of the access to culture issue in the Croatian cultural policy agenda, we illustrate the current cultural policy developments in Croatia in the broader European context. Taking the differentiation between explicit and implicit policies at both macro and micro level we analyse discourses on access to culture in the Croatian cultural policy at the constitutional level, parliamentary political parties’ level, the governmental level and the level of cultural organisations. On the one hand the policies regarding access to culture remain mostly implicit and revolve around traditional models connected to instruments dating back to socialism ; while on the other selected cultural organisations develop instruments for fostering it where European projects have an influence. The orientation more towards cultural production issues and less to access to culture and cultural participation issues draws similarities of cultural policy developments in Croatia with the general European cultural policy framework.
