A squad of Premiership soccer players (n=24) provided informed consent to participate in this study. Using ISAK (International Society of Advancement of Kinanthropometry) accredited methods, a total of 39 measurements (sectioned as: skinfolds, girths, lengths, and breadths) were made for each player. The procedure involved three measures at each site to calculate a mean value and an acceptable technical error margin. All data collection was performed by an ISAK level 3 accredited anthropometrist. The data analysis consisted of demographic and anthropometric data, including fractionation of body mass and estimated body fat from sum of skinfolds. Scaling of the raw data was done by using the phantom strategem to obtain calculated data for inter-player comparison. Mean calculated scores for playing position were obtained. A multivariate analysis of variance revealed no differences between positions (F 15,41.810=0.783, P=0.688). Previous studies have reported heterogeneity between playing positions. ...

Frances, Lady Nelson, wife of Vice Admiral Lord Nelson, has been much wronged in most accounts of the break‐up of her marriage in 1801. Material from the Davison Papers, discovered in 2001 and now in the archive of the National Maritime Museum, shows that, contrary to popular myth, Frances Nelson did all that she could to save the marriage and was repeatedly rebuffed—and with increasing cruelty—by her husband. Using the newly discovered papers, and other recently located material from Nelson’s own papers, the story of the famous separation is told, throwing fresh and fascinating light on the problems faced by abandoned society wives in the early 1800s.

The apparent success of export-oriented industrialisation in Japan, the so-called four little dragons — Taiwan, South Korea, Hong Kong and Singapore — and increasingly during the last decade the southern coastal provinces of Guangdong and Fujian in China has cast a harsh spotlight on the generally poor industrial performance of the formerly “new societies” over the same period. Even the United States has been passing through a period of reduced competitiveness in traditionally strong manufacturing sectors, epitomised in the creation of the aptly named “rust belt” in the old industrial heartland. The other neo-Europes — Crosby's rather ugly neologism for countries of recent white settlement in the temperate zone — have to a differing degree also seen a halting performance from the industrial sector. A model is described which leads to an analysis of data on the sequence of sexes in human families, particular attention being given to the detection of a correlation between the sexes of adjacent sibs. Three sources of potential confounding with this correlation are discussed. The method of analysis avoids any confounding with the effects of voluntary limitation of family size, or with the effects of variation in the probability of a male from birth to birth within a family. It is more difficult to separate the effect of correlation between the sexes of adjacent sibs from the effect of variation between families in the probability that a child born to the family will be male. The problem was solved in the present investigation by using an auxiliary analysis to show that families did not, in fact, differ in this probability. If this were not so, a separation of the two factors could still have been made by an additional analysis referred to in the paper.

Summary The present study employed a sample of 76 sets of twins who were distributed over six groups classified by zygosity and smoking status to investigate personality variables relating to smoking behavior. Results based on an analysis of intraclass correlation coefficients and intra-pair differences on MMPI scales showed that while monozygotic twin pairs were more similar than same-sexed dizygotic twins, differences were generally unrelated to smoking behavior. A possible exception was the finding of a statistically significant relationship between smoking and scores of the Pd scale, but this finding was in direct contrast to results from previous research. The hypothesis that twin pairs discordant for smoking might also be less alike in personality than sets in which concordance for smoking behavior exists was not supported.
