International audience; Founded as the Bureau Des Fédérations Européennes De Gymnastique in 1881, the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) was officially created in 1922. However, despite having over 100 national associations affiliated by the end of the twentieth century, it was dominated by Europeans until relatively recently. In particular, the former communist bloc of Eastern Europe had a particular hold on gymnastics from the 1950s onwards. This article uses the FIG as a case study to highlight the institutional, political and ideological rivalries within international sport. It reveals such influences on the sportification of gymnastics and, in doing so, offers new insights into the history of the Cold War, including the USSR’s ascension to the international sporting scene, and its power surrounding the ‘South Africa ban’ due to its Apartheid policy. Thus, this work allows us to understand how the FIG’s policies were, from an early stage, embedded in a twofold dynamic of East–West and North–South. Our study is based on official and administrative documents from national associations and the FIG, and on press review from several European countries.

Sleep loss is among the most common yet frequently overlooked problems. This disruptive influence is associated with an adverse lipid profile (LP) and consequently results in an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Furthermore, it has been well established that athletes are increasingly confronted with sleep problems. The aim of this study was to explore the effect of one night of partial sleep deprivation (PSD) on the cardiovascular profile and LP in young, trained athletes. Ten male Taekwondo athletes were randomized for three sleep conditions in a counterbalanced order: (i) following a baseline sleep night (BN), (ii) following PSD at the beginning of the night (PSDBN), and (iii) following PSD at the end of the night (PSDEN). Basal cardiovascular physiological measures were recorded, and blood samples were taken in the fasted state following each sleep session (i.e., in the morning at 07:00 h). The results showed that myoglobin and creatine phosphokinase increased significantly after PSDEN but not after PSDBN. By contrast, no alteration was observed in the LP and physiological parameters following the two types of PSD. In conclusion, these results show that PSDEN increases cardiac damage biomarkers significantly, even though they do not reach clinical significance. Thus, one night of PSD does not affect the physiological responses and biomarkers of LP in Taekwondo athletes.

International audience; The present research investigated the influence of coaches' exclamations on referees' decision-making in judo. Under time pressure, 65 judo referees judged identical throw situations played on video. The coaches' exclamations during throws were audible in the experimental condition, whereas no sound was present in the control condition. The throw situations varied in ambiguity (low vs. high) and strength (minor sanctions vs. hard sanctions), while coaches' exclamations interpreted the throws in a manner that was congenial for their own competitor. Results indicated that referees may use an audience response heuristic or a consensus heuristic to help them make decisions.

Few studies have focused on the effect of posture during sprint start. The aim of this study was to measure the effect of the modification of horizontal distance between the blocks during sprint start on three dimensional (3D) joint angular velocity. Nine trained sprinters started using three different starting positions (bunched, medium and elongated). They were equipped with 63 passive reflective markers, and an opto-electronic Motion Analysis1 system was used to collect the 3D marker trajectories. During the pushing phase on the blocks, norm of the joint angular velocity (NJAV), 3D Euler angular velocity (EAV) and pushing time on the blocks were calculated. The results demonstrated that the decrease of the block spacing induces an opposite effect on the angular velocity of joints of the lower and the upper limbs. The NJAV of the upper limbs is greater in the bunched start, whereas the NJAV of the lower limbs is smaller. The modifications of NJAV were due to a combination of the movement of the joints in the different degrees of freedom. The medium start seems to be the best compromise because it leads, in a short pushing time, to a combination of optimal joint velocities for upper and lower segments.

Directory of Open Access Journals, Google Scholar, CrossRef, Taylor & Francis Online; The first friction-cycle ergometers of the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the 20th century are presented before the description of more recent ergometers such as Fleisch ergometer (1954), ErgomécaTM (1985), sinus-balance ergometer, and weight-basket loaded ergometer. The limits of each ergometer are debated. The interest of friction-loaded ergometers was renewed with the proposal of different protocols enabling the assessment of maximal power during short all-out sprints on a cycle ergometer. These protocols are succinctly presented: corrected peak power protocol, force-speed test during repeated all-out sprints against different loads, torque–velocity relationship during a single all-out sprint. The different calibration procedures (static, dynamic, and physiological calibrations) of friction-loaded ergometers are described before the presentation of their results in the literature. Some improvements for the future friction-loaded ergometers are presented at the end of the paper.
