This article is a translation of a short story written in Sundanese which appeared in the West Java press in March 2012. The introduction provides some context to contemporary short story writing in Sundanese and then introduces the story proper and makes observations about language usage. Some brief critical remarks argue for the story's literary merits and make a comparison with the work of A.A. Navis in relation to the depiction of village society in Indonesia today. The annotations draw the attention of the reader to some features of contemporary Sundanese and contextualise references in the story to make it more comprehensible to the reader unfamiliar with West Java.

Purpose: The European Radiobiology Archives (ERA), together with corresponding Japanese and American databases, hold data from nearly all experimental animal radiation biology studies carried out between 1960 and 1998, involving more than 300,000 animals. The Federal Office for Radiation Protection, together with the University of Cambridge have undertaken to transfer the existing ERA archive to a web-based database to maximize its usefulness to the scientific community and bring data coding and structure of this legacy database into congruence with currently accepted semantic standards for anatomy and pathology. Methods: The accuracy of the primary data input was assessed and improved. The original rodent pathology nomenclature was recoded to replace the local ‘DIS-ROD’ (Disease Rodent) formalism with Mouse Pathology (MPATH) and Mouse Anatomy (MA) ontology terms. A pathology panel sampled histopathological slide material and compared the original diagnoses with currently accepted diagnostic criteria. Results: The overall non-systematic error rate varied among the studies between 0.26% and 4.41%, the mean error being 1.71%. The errors found have been corrected and the studies thus controlled have been annotated. The majority of the original pathology terms have been successfully translated into a combination of MPATH and MA ontology terms. Conclusions: ERA has the potential of becoming a world-wide radiobiological research tool for numerous applications, such as the re-analysis of existing data with new approaches in the light of new hypotheses and techniques, and using the database as an information resource for planning future animal studies. When the database is opened for new data it may be possible to offer long-term storage of data from recent and future animal studies.

Pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum [L.] R. Br.) production in semi-arid regions is limited by poor seedling emergence that results in poor stand establishment and, low yield. Six pearl millet populations were created by divergent selection within the Tift #2 S-1 (TIFT2) pearl millet population for seedling root length in sand in the greenhouse or seedling root or coleoptile length in paper germination towels in the laboratory. The TIFT2 population (TIFT2) and the six selected populations were grown in the field in a randomized complete block design at Mississippi State, MS (MSU) and at Katumani and Kiboko, Kenya in 1991 and 1992. Populations were evaluated for seedling emergence and shoot height every 3 d for the first 15 d after planting. The greatest differences in emergence occurred at the most water-stressed locations in both years. Previous studies by the present authors and others have shown that the expression of many genes is modulated by radiation. The purpose of this study is to identify additional genes that are affected by UV and X-radiation. Identification of specific genes affected by radiation may allow the determination of pathways important in radiation responses as well as an examination of transcriptional elements that are involved in the process.A modified differential display approach coupled with sequencing was used to identify genes that are modulated in response to UV and ionizing radiation, and Northern blot analysis was used to confirm specific gene modulation.Treatment of human primary umbilical vein endothelial cells with UV radiation resulted in the differential expression of several genes. Sequencing of the bands revealed that one of these was calmodulin. There was a 30% reduction in accumulation of calmodulin-specific mRNA 1 h post UV exposure, and a 50% decrease 3 h after treatment. X-rays also repressed accumulation of calmodulin mRNA. Radiation exposure of HeLa cells also resulted in a decrease in expression of this gene.UV and ionizing radiations cause a decrease in accumulation of calmodulin transcripts in the first 1-3 h following exposure. Repression of calmodium mRNA levels may be one mechanism of stress-induced intracellular Ca2+ modulation.

The dynamic compression test performed on an instrumented falling weight machine has been shown to be valuable in the assessment of tungsten and other high density penetrator alloys. It enables dynamic stress strain curves to be plotted, strain rate sensitivity to be assessed, reveals the incidence of shear instability and allows the critical strain for shear instability to be measured. The important parameters of the test are discussed and its applications described.

Structure-activity relationships of antibacterial dihydrofolate reductase inhibitors are reviewed. A short introduction is followed by a more detailed review of developments since 1980. The design of site directed inhibitors based on data from X-ray crystallographic, NMR spectroscopy and molecular graphic studies is discussed. The development of quantitative structure-activity relations is surveyed from a historical point of view and these are contrasted with more recent alternative approaches. Conclusions are reached regarding possible future developments.

We develop a new, quantitative model describing the electronically mediated erosion of dielectric materials by fast ion bombardment. This model is based on the concept that the effective inter-molecular lattice potential is transiently but significantly modified in some restricted region about the primary ion path, due to intense electronic excitation. The acceleration of the nuclei in this modified lattice potential transfers appreciable energy to molecular motion. Sputtering yields are calculated without the introduction of adjustable parameters or arbitrary normalization, and the results compare favorably with the available data. Sputtering induced by both heavy and light ions, on both refractory dielectric materials and condensed volatiles may be treated.
