Knowledge of intelligence is essential for interpreting cognitive performance following traumatic brain injury (TBI). The Test of Premorbid Functioning (ToPF), a word reading test co-normed with the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale 4(th) Edition (WAIS-IV), was examined as a tool for estimating premorbid intelligence in persons with a history of TBI. Fifty-two participants with mild, moderate, or severe TBI were administered the ToPF and WAIS-IV between two weeks and 19 months post-injury. The independent ability of the ToPF/demographic score and the Verbal Comprehension Index (VCI) to predict WAIS-IV Full Scale IQ (FSIQ) was examined, as were discrepancies between ToPF and WAIS-IV scores within and between participants. The ToPF/demographic predicted FSIQ accounted for a significant proportion of variability in actual FSIQ, above and beyond that accounted for by education or time since injury. ToPF and WAIS-IV scores did not differ by injury severity. In our sample, the ToPF/demographic predicted FSIQ underestimated intelligence in a substantial portion of our participants (31%), particularly in those with high average to superior intelligence. Finally, VCI scores were more predictive of actual FSIQ than the ToPF/demographic predicted FSIQ. The ToPF frequently underestimated post-injury intelligence and is therefore not accurately measuring premorbid intelligence in our sample, particularly in those with above average to superior intelligence. Clinicians are encouraged to administer the entire WAIS-IV, or at minimum the VCI subtests, for a more accurate measure of intelligence in those with above average intelligence and history of TBI.

A new unconventional room temperature ionic liquid, cetyl pyridinium naphthenate (CPN) was synthesized and was ascertained by IR, NMR and CHN analysis. Cloud point extraction of Cu(II) was carried out by using CPN for a synergistic enhancement effect. Triton X 100 was used as surfactant in cloud point extraction and cloud point temperature was 750 C. Quantification was carried out by FAAS. The mean recovery, enrichment factor, tolerance limit, RSD, LOD and LOQ were found to be 99.8%, 40, 1000 ppm, 0.15%, 27 ppt and 93 ppt respectively. Method was validated by analyzing natural water and blood samples.

The study empirically estimates the relative technical efficiency of Nigeria upstream petroleum industries and its determinants using non-parametric and parametric analysis. The non-parametric analysis’ results reveal that joint venture contract operators, marginal field contract operators, sole risk contract operators, production sharing contract operators, service contract operator and national oil company contract have the following technical efficiency grades: 75%, 67%, 65%, 64%, 42% and 23%, respectively. On the other hand, the parametric analysis result indicates that four of the selected independent variables are statistically significant determinants of the upstream technical performance. The findings support the plan exit of cash calls policy by the government and confirm that the proposed exit of the model is not harmful to both the government and the investors. For the indigenous participants, we submit that the government may put in place attractive incentives policy to encourage more indigenous participation in the upstream business.

We previously showed that striated muscle-selective depletion of lamina-associated polypeptide 1 (LAP1), an integral inner nuclear membrane protein, leads to profound muscular dystrophy with premature death in mice. As LAP1 is also depleted in hearts of these mice, we examined their cardiac phenotype. Striated muscle-selective LAP1 knockout mice display ventricular systolic dysfunction with abnormal induction of genes encoding cardiomyopathy related proteins. To eliminate possible confounding effects due to skeletal muscle pathology, we generated a new mouse line in which LAP1 is deleted in a cardiomyocyte-selective manner. These mice had no skeletal muscle pathology and appeared overtly normal at 20 weeks of age. However, cardiac echocardiography revealed that they developed left ventricular systolic dysfunction and cardiac gene expression analysis revealed abnormal induction of cardiomyopathy-related genes. Our results demonstrate that LAP1 expression in cardiomyocytes is required for normal left ventricular function, consistent with a report of cardiomyopathy in a human subject with mutation in the gene encoding LAP1.

Azabicycloheptenoylditerpene 1-((2E,6E,10E)-3,7,11,15-tetramethylhexadeca-2,6,10,14-tetraenyl)-2-azabicyclo[2.2.1]hept-5-en-3-one (artamodamide, 1), diphenylpentanoid (E)-1,5-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-pent-1-en-3-one (artamenone, 2) and N-methoxy-5-oxoaporphinoid (artamonteirine, 3) were isolated as new metabolites from Artabotrys modestus Diels ssp macranthus Verdc. and Artabotrys monteiroae Oliv. (Annonaceae), together with several known compounds. Structures of the isolated compounds were established based on analysis of their spectroscopic data. Some of the compounds exhibited antimicrobial activity (minimum inhibitory concentration values between 2.5 and 20 µg mL⁻¹) and varying levels of mosquito larvicidal potency. These results further indicate the versatility of the family Annonaceae in accumulating bioactive natural products with diverse chemical structures and wide spectra of biological activities, and hence suggesting the need to conserve Annonaceae species that are potentially vulnerable to extinction.

This study examined the relationship between multicultural personality dispositions and trait emotional intelligence. The sample included 152 graduate education students enrolled at a university in a large northeastern city of the United States. The multicultural personality dispositions of Cultural Empathy and Social Initiative predicted variance in trait emotional intelligence above and beyond the variance accounted for by gender and potential socially desirable responding. Study limitations are highlighted, and suggestions for follow-up quantitative and qualitative research are presented.

Phytochemical investigation of the stem and root barks of Friesodielsia obovata Benth (Annonaceae) afforded new 3',5'-diformyl-2',4',6'-trihydroxychalcone and N-formyl-7-hydroxyglaucine together with five known compounds, 3',5'-dimethyl-2',4',6'-trihydroxychalcone, (-)-crotepoxide, demethoxymatteucinol, lawinal, and benzyl benzoate. 3',5'-diformyl-2',4',6'-trihydroxychalcone indicated significant antiplasmodial, cytotoxicity, and larvicidal activities.

Petroleum ether, dichloromethane, and ethanolic extracts of the stem bark and leaves of Uvaria scheffleri Diels (Annonaceae) exhibited antifungal activity against Aspergillus niger (wild strain), Aspergillus fumigatus (wild strain), and a Penicillium species (wild strain). The ethanol extract of the stem bark was also active against Candida albicans (Strain H6392). The dichloromethane extract of the leaves showed the highest antifungal activity and in addition it showed antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (NCTC 6571). Fractionation of the dichloromethane extract of the leaves yielded nine known compounds. They included a 1 : 1 mixture of stigmasterol (1) and β-sitosterol (2), which showed antifungal activity against Candida albicans. An unexpected chromatographic behavior of fat globules has led to a simple HPLC assay for glycerin in the complex matrix of fat emulsions intended for intravenous injection. When a combination of a Hamilton PRP-1 (Polymer Reverse-phase) Column, a Biorad Microguard Carbo C Guard Column, and a Biorad HPLC Carbohydrate Analysis Column connected in series in the order listed was used for the separation of glycerin, with water as the mobile phase, the fat globules eluted unretained. The glycerin, which eluted by aqueous size exclusion, was detected and quantitated using a refractive index detector.

Safflower oil and soybean oil, which are the major constituents of fat emulsions for intravenous use, are both complex mixtures of triglycerides. Separation of triglycerides from the other ingredients of IV fat emulsion and their elution together as a single peak have been achieved through the use of a highly retentive Polymer Reverse Phase (PRP) column in tandem with a strong mobile phase. Quantitation is performed against a standard preparation of soybean oil using refractive index detection. The procedure is based on the use of the composite response from a known amount of one complex mixture of triglycerides to quantitate another complex mixture of triglycerides, which may even differ from the former in composition. A validation strategy for this unique situation has been developed and implemented.

The expanded perlite can be used as support for the fixed biomass in the treatment of wastewater by infiltration in unsaturated porous media. The high porosity of this material (86%) should have further the diffusive transport of oxygen in the porous media. The distribution of the pore space shows that pores smaller than 100 µm prevail which explain a field capacity equal to 50% of the porosity. The measurements of oxygen diffusive transport realised on wastewater infiltration plants give small apparent diffusion coefficient, nearly 10−3 m−2. s−1. These low values are explained by the expansion of the biofilm in a part of the air-filled porosity.

The treatment of urban sewage by high‐rate filtration on vertical sand filters give satisfactory physicochemical results but bacteriological treatment capacity is limited by the factors governing detention time: load and thickness of the filter bed. With the same hydraulic load and thickness of material, use of expanded perlite with a particle size similar to that of medium grade sand allows an increase in detention time while conserving good drainage characteristics. A pilot high‐rate filtration installation in an unsaturated medium on an expanded perlite filter was monitored for two years. The effluent treated was from an activated sludge microstation. The filter was 1 m thick and fed sequentially with a load of 0.35 m per day. Samples were taken after filtration through thicknesses of 0.25 m, 0.55 m and 1 m. Some life tests result in few or no failures. In such cases, it is difficult to assess reliability with traditional life tests that record only time to failure. For some devices, it is possible to obtain degradation measurements over time, and these measurements may contain useful information about product reliability. Even with little or no censoring, there may be important practical advantages to analyzing degradation data. If failure is defined in terms of a specified level of degradation, a degradation model defines a particular time-to-failure distribution. Generally it is not possible to obtain a closed-form expression for this distribution. The purpose of this work is to develop statistical methods for using degradation measures to estimate a time-to-failure distribution for a broad class of degradation models. We use a nonlinear mixed-effects model and develop methods based on Monte Carlo simulation to obtain point estimates and confidence intervals for reliability assessment.

Studies were undertaken to evaluate the clinical relevance of toxicologic assessments of mesalazine and to establish mesalazine pharamcokinetics. In the toxicology studies groups of rats and dogs received various doses of mesalazine, ranging from 40 to 320 mg/kg of body weight, for 6 or 12 months. Evidence of renal papillary necrosis was found at 60 or 100 mg/kg in dogs and 320 mg/kg in rats. Data are presented to show that drug absorption after the clinical doses of mesalazine given to human patients is much lower than after the potentially nephrotoxic doses given to experimental animals. In the pharmacokinetic studies plasma from rats and dogs given various doses of mesalazine was analysed for mesalazine and its major metabolites. The results demonstrated that mesalazine in pharmaceutic preparations is not likely to present a nephrotoxic risk to patients, given the low systemic exposure achieved. After 12 months of mesalazine administration to dogs, many showed an ocular condition diagnosed as keratoconjunctivitis sicca. Experimental and epidemiologic evidence demonstrates that this condition is peculiar to dogs, and there are no reports of untoward ocular effects in patients receiving long-term therapy with mesalazine.

Student concerns over conflicting ideas as to the origin of the earth and life suggested the need for a course which addresses directly the differences in the Scientific and Biblical accounts of origins. An experimental multi-disciplinary course was team taught through the Department of Physical Sciences and the Department of Philosophy and Religion. Student response indicates the course was successful in meeting its objectives of giving students an understanding of how differences in the nature and methods of science and religion lead to conflicting accounts of the origin and evolution of the earth and life. The course is given in an open, non-judgemental approach so that the students might resolve any personal anxieties these conflicts may have generated.

Adults have good skin texture and accurate contours can be drawn. Young children cannot be contoured satisfactorily because they lack adequate skin texture, and only linear measurements can be obtained with precision.The disadvantage of incomplete facial coverage was eliminated by using a pair of oblique exposures instead of the conventional frontal exposure. The need for mechanical head positioning was avoided by use of a sighting device incorporated in the system to orientate each exposure to a common datum.
