Organic pollutants (OPs) are of worldwide concern for being hazardous to human existence and natural flora and fauna in view of their contaminating nature, bio-aggregation properties and long range movement abilities in environment. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are a new kind of crystalline porous material, composed of metal ions and multi dentate organic ligands with well-defined co-ordination geometry exhibiting promising application respect to adsorptive evacuation of OPs for chromatographic analysis. Applications of MOFs as preconcentration material and column packing material are reviewed. Key analytical characteristics of MOF based preconcentration techniques and coupled chromatographic procedures are summarized in detail. MOF based preconcentration strategies are compared with conventional sorbent based extraction techniques for thorough evaluation of performance of MOF materials.

The present study explores various quantum chemical models to better understand the molecular properties of pyridylselenium compounds. We have carried out theoretical and experimental analyses of bis(3,5-dimethyl-2-pyridyl)diselenide (1), 3,5-dimethyl-2,6-bis(methylselenenyl) pyridine (2) and 3,5-dimethyl-2-(methylselenenyl)pyridine (3). The study demonstrates the effect of structural variations on molecular properties of these compounds. Density functional theory (DFT) has been used to calculate vibrational wavenumbers and intensity of vibrational bands and the results obtained are in excellent agreement with the experimental FT-IR data. The 1H and 13C NMR chemical shifts were calculated using GIAO method in gas phase and solvent phase of CDCl3 by taking IEFPCM method and correlations have been developed which accurately predicts the chemical shift values of various organoselenium compounds. The HOMO-LUMO energies in the gas and solvent phase were calculated by using B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level of theory. The HOMO-LUMO energy gaps in different molecules were compared and correlated with their biological activity.

A method for the determination of Co(II), Ni(II) and Pd(II) in aqueous samples by fabric phase sorptive extraction-high-performance liquid chromatography-UV detection (FPSE-HPLC-UV) is developed. A preconcentration step was necessary due to the trace level concentrations of these elements in aqueous samples. Sol-gel polytetrahydrofuran nanocomposite was selected as the sorbent. All major FPSE parameters were optimized. The limit of detection for Co(II), Ni(II) and Pd(II) morpholino dithiocarbamate complexes were found at much lower concentration level compared with earlier reported data with excellent reproducibility. The new FPSE-HPLC-UV method can be used for routine determination of these metal species in various aqueous environmental samples and in different alloys.

Fluoroquinolones are an important and extensively studied group of compounds. Newer generations of fluoroquinolones are being developed to enhance the antimicrobial spectrum and pharmacological properties of these antimicrobials. Various analytical methods including chromatographic, voltametric, titrimetric, potentiometric, spectrophotometric, and so forth have been reported for analysis of these drugs. However luminescence and spectrofluorimetric methods continue to hold much significance as they are simple, economical, and sensitive as compared to most of the other methods. This led us to review the luminescence and spectrofluorimetric methods described for the analysis of this important class of drugs either per se, in dosage forms, or in biological fluids.

Hyphenation of analytical techniques is a promising trend due to their wide applicability. This article explains the hyphenation of solid phase micro-extraction to capillary electrophoresis. Different modes of solid phase microextraction (SPME) are reported to increase sensitivity of the methods. Various advantages and problems that occurred during the hyphenation are highlighted. Besides using this as a tool of separation, solid phase microextraction capillary electrophoresis (SPME-CE) is considered with special emphasis on applications utilizing its hyphenation to mass spectrometry. As SPME offers a high preconcentration factor, its hyphenation with capillary electrophoresis mass spectrometry (CE-MS) is very promising.

The majority of quinolones of clinical use belong to the subset of fluoroquinolones, which have a fluoro group attached the central ring system, typically at the 6-position. Fluoroquinolones are widely used in human and veterinary medicine. In recent times there has been significant development in the field of fluoroquinolones and many new analogues have been synthesized. The clinical and pharmaceutical analysis of these drugs requires effective analytical procedures for quality control and pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic studies. In this review article, various spectrophotometric methods used for determination of fluoroquinolones have been covered. The methods include visible spectrophotometry, which is based on formation of ion-pair or charge transfer complexes, UV spectrophotometry and derivative spectrophotometry. The application of these methods for the determination of fluoroquinolones in pharmaceutical and real samples has also been discussed.

A selective, sensitive, and economical derivative spectrophotometric method has been developed for the determination of trace amount of Cu(II) and Pd(II) with MDTC as a reagent in the presence of CTAB, a solubilizing agent. The molar absorption coefficient and analytical sensitivities of the 1:2 Cu(MDTC)2 and Pd(MDTC)2 complexes are 2.467×104 and 2.989×104 l mol−1, respectively. The developed derivative procedure, is applied for the rapid and selective simultaneous determination of Cu(II) and Pd(II) in the range of 0.2–15 and 0.1–10 µg/ml, respectively. Complex matrices, including alloys, biological samples, pharmaceutical samples and synthetic mixtures have been successfully analyzed for trace amounts of two metal ions.

A procedure has been developed for the direct fourth derivative spectrophotometric determination of zinc(II) dimethyldithiocarbamate by converting it into its copper(II) dimethyldithiocarbamate complex, which is then dissolved in Triton X-100. Beer's law is obeyed over the concentration range 0.5–30 µg/mL in the final solution. Various parameters such as the effect of pH and the interference of a number of ions on the determination of Ziram have been studied in detail. The method is sensitive and can be used for the determination of Ziram in commercial samples like Zirax and Ziron containing Ziram and from wheat grains.

The determination of arsenic in environmental samples like waste waters from industrial effluents and in biological samples like urine is very important due to the toxic nature of some of its species at moderate levels of exposure. The objective of this study was to evaluate the capability of modified anionic capillaries to remove chloride for ICP-MS determination of arsenic, which causes spectral interference due to formation of 40 Ar 35 Cl + . Also high chloride content gives non-spectral interferences. The results indicate that arsenic at a concentration higher than 1 µg L m 1 in a matrix with a chloride content up to 600 mg L m 1 can be accurately determined using a 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTMS) modified capillary connected to a microconcentric nebuliser (MCN). The interference level of chloride is considerably reduced due to its retention in the capillary. The method has been successfully applied and validated for waste water and by recovery tests for urine (diluted 1 : 15) samples.

Capillary electrophoresis is a micro volume separation technique increasingly achieving recognition for use in the separation and determination of pesticides due to its relatively short analysis time, and nano liter to picoliter sample volumes. Capillary electrophoresis is attracting considerable attention from many laboratories due to its simplicity. This overview discusses the applications of capillary electrophoresis for trace detection and determination of pesticides in pesticide formulations, environmental samples, and for chiral separations. The basic principles and improvements and their application in terms of increasing detection limits are discussed in this overview.

A new rapid, selective and sensitive method has been developed for the determination of maneb using pyrocatechol-violet(PV) as chelating reagent in the pH range of 7.5–11.0 in the presence of CTAB producing a complex which shows maximum absorption at 640 nm. Working range of the method is 0.2–3.0 μg ml−1 maneb (manganese ethylenebisdithiocarbamate). The molar absorptivity of the color system is 79600 1 mol−1 cm−1 and Sandell's sensitivity is 0.0033 μg cm−2. The reproducibility of the method has been checked by the 10 replicate analysis of 15 μg of maneb in 10 ml of solution. The method is quite sensitive and has been applied for the determination of maneb in various commercial samples, crops, grains and synthetic samples.

SUMMARY A simple and sensitive capillary electrophoretic method was developed for the separation and determination of Thiram in boric acid buffer by direct UV absorbance detection at λ = 254 nm. The separation behaviour of Thiram from Nabam was studied and it is dependent on pH and the nature of the buffer. The detection limit (S/N = 3) is 0.5 μg/ml for Thiram. The method was successfully applied to the analysis of wheat samples spiked with Thiram.

A simple and sensitive capillary elecrophoretic method has been developed for the separation and determination of Nabam and NaDDC in boric acid buffer by direct UV absorbance detection at 254 nm. The separation is dependent on pH and nature of the buffer. In this method the detection limits (S/N = 3) are 1.56 × 10−6 mol/L and 2.48 × 10−6 mol/L and the linear calibration range is three orders of magnitude for Nabam and NaDDC, respectively. The method has been successfully applied for the analysis of wheat samples spiked with Nabam.
