The emotional experience of a visit to a concentration camp memorial is high in intensity and wide in diversity. Clustering of this emotional experience has led to a better understanding of the valence of emotions. It is not known how these emotion clusters affect the meaning derived from the experience and how this affects visit intention. This study addressed this gap in research and explored the potential relations between emotion clusters and meaning in the context of an expected visit to a concentration camp memorial. This study finds that the emotion cluster Sympathy is the only cluster to have a significant and large positive direct effect on Meaning and a significant, but small, positive indirect effect on Visit Intention. The Misery cluster is the only cluster that has a significant but small negative direct effect on Visit Intention. The Positivity cluster has no effects on Meaning and Visit Intention. In the discussion, we address the role of empathy, and theoretical implications are framed in Terror Management Theory. Managerial implications include a discussion on the use of promotion to trigger empathy.

The Refined Core and Balance Model of Family Leisure Functioning was used to guide our study of the link between vacation experiences of romantic couples and satisfaction with their relationship life. Results revealed that romantic couples who had more shared or joint experiences during their vacations in the previous year reported higher levels of satisfaction with their relationship life at the end of the year. This association was mediated by relationship functioning (i.e., couple cohesion and flexibility). The number of vacations was not a significant predictor of romantic couples’ satisfaction with relationship life; what mattered most was the extent to which partners were engaged in joint experiences during their vacations such as having fun together, mindful conversations, physical intimacy, and trying new things together. These findings demonstrate the need to continue to study less frequent, extraordinary leisure vacation experiences that may help maintain the love within romantic relationships. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed

Structured experience (SE) providers continuously evaluate and improve their experiential offerings to make them more memorable. Arguably, the temporal dynamics of the emotions in an experience have a crucial influence on its memorability. Traditional post-experience evaluation procedures tend to ignore these temporal dynamics, thus offering imprecise feedback for providers on exactly when and where to optimize their experiential offerings. In this paper, we use two methods as a tool for evaluating how closely the lived experience of a SE follows the experience as intended by the provider: real-time skin conductance (SC) and experience reconstruction measures (ERMs). We demonstrate that both SC and ERMs are significantly related to intended experience. This link was found to be stronger for later sections of the experience than for earlier sections. In addition, SC and ERMs appear to be useful tools to assess the effectiveness of design interventions, thus providing valuable feedback for SE providers.

The COVID-19 virus and the measures taken to prevent its spread have had enormous impact on society, and specifically on people’s leisure behaviour in the Netherlands. The Dutch government implemented a so-called “intelligent lockdown” mid-March 2020. This constituted a partial closing of the economy, particularly those locations and businesses where social distancing could not be practiced. By July of 2020, many restrictions had already been lifted, but the concept of the “1.5 meter society” was retained, thus still prohibiting large-scale gatherings such as festivals, and severely limiting the capacity of leisure venues. During the lockdown period, people spent more leisure time at home and with their family. This caused a spike in the popularity of social media-related leisure, gaming, television (especially streaming services), but also a revaluing of more “traditional” forms of leisure. Since many leisure facilities were closed, self-organized outdoor leisure activities such as hiking, running, and cycling became even more popular. The psychological impact included heightened stress, anxiety, and confusion. The economic impact is expected to be significant, but the leisure sector is showing its resilience by figuring out new ways of continuing operations.

This paper provides an introduction to Special Issue on ‘Event Experiences: Measurement and Meaning’. It reviews the research conducted by the ATLAS Event Group over the past decade, and highlights the interplay between qualititative and quantitative research on events during this period. Major research themes related to the event experience are analysed, including the social dimension of events, event design, visitor engagement, eventful cities and event networks and platforms. The different quantative and qualitative contributions to the issue are introduced and compared.

The starting meta-trend at the basis of this paper is that lifestyles in the city will continue to “Blur” between work and urban leisure. To describe “Blur”, one might say that the integration of technology and increased connectedness into all aspects of life has led to the hyper-availability of content regardless of setting, breaking down the traditional wall of separation between work and home. Behaviours, activities, and categories will increasingly overlap and complement each other. Business categories themselves will cease to exist as such. They will increasingly blur into new blended propositions, beyond linear innovation. In this dynamic context, perceptions of value and the social construction of notions of luxury will continue to translate into people’s willingness to pay a premium, from mass luxury to high end, restructuring consumption dynamics for commodities, consumables and services at brand, innovation and proposition levels. The paper offers extensive analysis of these themes. Presenting an existing tool from a world-class research programme on urban futures plus two proprietary tools developed for the specific purpose of this paper, as based on reflexivity, anecdotal evidence and a rich apparatus of references.

Hallmark events have a great impact on a host community, and local support for such events is vital. Previous research has mainly focussed on resident attitudes towards sport events rather than cultural hallmark events. This paper analyses the 2018 European Capital of Culture (ECOC) in Valletta, Malta, to understand resident’s attitudes towards a cultural event. A resident survey a few months prior to the event generated 267 responses. A Confirmatory Factor Analysis reveals that resident support for the ECOC was influenced by levels of perceived benefits and perceived costs, in line with social exchange theory. Perceptions of benefits and costs were related to levels of community attachment, community concern, resource utilisation and European identity. Levels of community involvement and identification with European culture are particularly important in generating support for the event, in line with the European Commission’s stated aims for the event.

Events are per definition limited in time and space. However, the social interaction taking place during events can continue virtually. This can result in hybrid communities, existing of an offline and an online dimension. This paper explores the construction of hybrid event communities based on the following research questions: (1) What type of online practices can be identified before, during and after the event? (2) How do online and offline event practices and rituals influence each other? (3) How do combinations of online and offline practices contribute to the creation and maintenance of hybrid event communities? The practices of three events were studied using qualitative methods. Fifty-six interviews were conducted, and participant observation took place during 11 editions of the events. This was complemented with an online study. The findings identify different types of online practices around events such as connecting practices, recruiting practices and creative practices. Moreover, the combinations of practices lead to different types of event communities. The paper develops a framework of online/offline interaction processes that result in different types of event communities, contributing to our knowledge about the role that events can play in the contemporary network society.

The increasingly multifaceted nature of event impacts makes them even more attractive as a potential solution to a range of urban and regional problems. As a result, competition to stage major cultural and sporting events is intensifying, and the cost of bidding is also rising. Given that such bidding processes only produce one winner, this means that a growing number of disappointed cities have to justify the costs of bidding for major events. In this context, we analyse the bidding process for the European Capital of Culture in the Netherlands (2018) and its impacts on local social structures. In particular the article focuses on the less tangible, non-economic effects of bidding for events, establishing a framework based on network formation, public support for the bidding process and social cohesion. The conclusions point to the key role of sociality and networking for events, which should therefore be developed throughout the bidding process for successful impacts, whether the event is won or not.

Evaluation and monitoring have become major issues for cultural events. On the one hand, more detailed information is needed to satisfy event sponsors, on the other hand, the nature of events is increasingly developing towards inclusive concepts (from consumer-oriented delivery to more experiential and social values). The focus on visitor experience presents event organizers with a need to go beyond traditional measurement instruments to evaluate their events. Qualitative approaches are therefore increasingly valued for the insight they provide into visitor experience. The use of visitor journeys and thematic analysis for evaluating, monitoring and improving cultural events will be discussed on the basis of research in cooperation with ‘Rotterdam Festivals’, an umbrella organization for festivals in the city of Rotterdam. On the basis of these results, the visitor journey method allows for better insight into consumer experiences. Apart from contributing to knowledge about the event experience, the method has also proven to be a powerful tool for event design (i.e. developing new strategies and concepts), and thus it can bridge the gap identified in the literature between event evaluation and design. This paper will serve three goals: to present the outcomes of the visitor journey approach, to discuss strengths and weaknesses when compared to other evaluation approaches, and discuss the value of visitor journeys for evaluation and event design.

This study aims to identify student models of learning (sets of ‘intra‐student’ cognitions about learning) and to investigate their effect on study strategies. A two‐step cluster analysis identified four student models of learning, representing students’ self‐efficacy beliefs, learning conceptions, attributions for academic performance and assessment expectations. Results demonstrate that all identified student learning models combine either strong or weak control over learning beliefs with a specific mix of reproduction and meaning oriented assessment expectations. Results also indicate that student models of learning profoundly affect higher education students’ study strategies. Finally, the present study demonstrates that the effect of a particular cognition about learning depends on the other cognitions part of a student’s learning model.
