Automating gift and exchange operations (G & E) has been part of the general trend toward automating library operations. Automation was virtually nonexistent in G & E during the implementation of cataloging utilities and the automation of acquisitions, circulation, and other library operations. But with the advent of microcomputers and the Internet, automated G & E processes are becoming commonplace. Areas affected include gift acknowledgments; gift and exchange records; duplicate exchanges; selling duplicates through the Internet; Web guides to G & E as a whole; G & E operations at individual institutions; book sales; electronic mailings lists; communication with exchange partners via E-mail; and mounting exchange publications directly on the Web.
