To evaluate the relationship between years of collegiate playing experience and success of NCAA Division I volleyball programs. Data were gathered from the 2010-2015 seasons for each volleyball program in the "power five" conferences. Players that were involved in at least 66% of the sets were selected for analysis. Each player's years of college experience were tabulated and a team average experience score was created. This score was correlated with the end of season Ratings Percentage Index (RPI). Years with a significant correlation between success and experience were further analyzed for differences in on-court statistics by years of experience. The range for team average experience score was 2.52-2.66. Only the 2012 season showed a moderate correlation between the team average score and RPI (ρ = -0.421, p = .001), indicating that more experienced teams finished with a higher national ranking. Within this year, teams with more experience had a statistically significant (p .05) higher season win percentage, higher conference win percentage, higher hitting percentage, more kills/set, and more assists/set than teams with low or only moderate experience. These data suggest that more collegiate playing experience does not always result in a significantly more successful season, but trends indicate that a relationship does exist between experience and success. In the one year that showed significance, more experienced teams had more favorable statistics related to skills that terminate play (e.g., kills) rather than ball control skills (e.g., digs and passing).

An interdisciplinary undergraduate atmospheric science modeling course was cotaught at a midsize public university by three professors from atmospheric science, statistics, and design using a blended learning approach. The in-class portion of the course taught upper-level students numerical weather prediction modeling and statistical evaluation methods. Online modules were used to teach data visualization techniques and three foundational design principles upon which their efficacy depends : legibility, visual hierarchy, and appropriate use of color. Geoscience students need data visualization skills to prepare for careers in government, industry, and research that increasingly require work with big data and communication with diverse collaborators and audiences. This article focuses on the instructional approach for the visualization component of the course—specifically, the three teaching innovations used: online modules, an interdisciplinary teaching team, and design-focused data visualization instruction. Although course enrollment was low at four students, several valuable lessons were learned that can improve the teaching of visualization in geoscience courses, including the utility of structuring visualization instruction around two separate but complementary visualization skills: visualization for analysis and visualization for sharing knowledge. Evaluation of students’ visualization work at the conclusion of the course demonstrated improvement in the foundational design principles as well as improved ability to select appropriate visualization strategies for different situations. The methods used to assess these improvements are presented alongside illustrative examples of student work. Pre- and postcourse surveys indicate the students felt more confident in creating data visualizations upon completion of the course, and qualitative assessments of student work confirm increased application of foundational design principles in visualizations created by the students. The authors argue that teaching visualization as an online supplement to other geoscience instruction is a potentially replicable model for improving students’ learning about visualization. This is especially true when such instruction relies on open-source programs and materials and leverages interdisciplinary expertise in course design.

Probability Proportional to Size (PPS) sampling is one of the most widely used designs for finite populations. We propose modifications to PPS designs with replacement and Rao-Hartley-Cochran design without replacement. These modifications consist of division of the population into two groups. Units in the first group are included in the sample with probability one. Under certain conditions, in both with and without replacement designs, the estimator of the population total based on the modified PPS sampling design is shown to be better than the corresponding estimator based on a PPS design. We illustrate our modification by an example and an application.

The purpose of this study was to compare kinematics of two hitting conditions: stationary tee and front toss from a practice pitcher. Twenty-two NCAA Division I Collegiate softball players (20.3 ± 1.5 years; 166.6 ± 6.3 cm; 68.0 ± 7.5 kg) participated. Participants executed five maximum effort swings from a stationary tee and five swings from a front toss practice pitcher. Data for each kinematic variable were averaged for the five maximal effort swings of each condition and analyzed using a within-subject repeated measures ANOVA. The front toss condition revealed significantly greater lead knee flexion at foot contact and greater trunk rotation towards the back side at ball contact. The tee condition revealed greater trunk lateral flexion to the back side at foot contact, greater trunk rotation towards the lead side at follow through, and greater pelvis rotation towards the lead side at follow through. This study most significantly indicates that swing mechanics are different between specific training methods; therefore, athletes should implement techniques most applicable to a competition setting such as the front toss.

In studies of waste treatment, waste characterization can be regarded as one of the most important tasks because the waste composition and concentrations greatly affect the process behaviors. This paper proposes a waste characterization method for anaerobic digestion based on ADM1. The relationships between the steady state of the process and the concentrations of the influent components are investigated and determined based on the use of information regarding the process output to estimate the waste characteristics. In addition, a new procedure of parameter division and optimization for characterizing the influent waste is proposed. Here, the parameters to be estimated are divided based on the bi-linear nature of the problem, identifiability and information content of the parameters, under the given measurements. The paper explores the division of a polygon into equal-area pieces using line segments originating at a common point. The mathematical background of the proposed method is very simple and belongs to secondary school geometry. Simple examples dividing a square into two, four or eight congruent pieces provide a starting point to discovering how to divide a regular polygon into any number of equal-area pieces using line segments originating from the centre. Moreover, it turns out that there are infinite ways to do the division. Discovering the basic invariant involved allows application of the same procedure to divide any tangential polygon, as after suitable adjustment, it can be used also for rectangles and parallelograms. Further generalization offers many additional solutions of the problem, and some of them are presented for the case of an arbitrary triangle and a square.
