El estudio busca determinar las características ambientales y las habilidades que poseen los niños turrialbeños considerados por sus maestros como talentosos. Asimismo, se describen las cualidades que los docentes toman en consideración para definir a un alumno como un niño de "alto logro". Este es un trabajo innovador, no sólo por la amplitud de la investigación y el tema mismo, sino porque se desarrolló en un área rural, donde casi todos los estudiantes vienen de familias de estrato socioeconómico medio bajo y cuyos padres, en su mayoría, solo han cursado estudios primarios. En general, los docentes definen a un niño como talentoso basándose en su rendimiento académico, y especialmente, en su desempeño en materias como español y matemática, dejando fuera de consideración habilidades especiales o artísticas, sentido crítico y otros aspectos importantes. Tras una gran cantidad de pruebas que pretendían medir las habilidades y características de estos niños en diversos aspectos, se comprobó que no todos tienen alto logro en todas las facetas en que los maestros los citaban como sobresalientes, aunque sí hay una gran mayoría que se mostró con una buena autoestima, con una soltura y expresión oral y escrita considerables, buenos para el dibujo y con inclinación y aptitud para las matemáticas. En todos los casos, se recomienda la identificación temprana de estas habilidades, para, de esta forma, darles a estos niños la estimulación y motivación adecuadas. El estudio mostró que la mayor parte de estos niños proviene de familias integradas y reciben apoyo y estímulo por parte de sus padres. Por otra parte, quedó en evidencia la necesidad de capacitación y orientación para los docentes en cuanto a la mejor manera de atender estos casos. Igualmente, se señala que las instituciones educativas tampoco cuentan con la infraestructura ni los recursos adecuados para facilitar el proceso. ABSTRACT: The study seeks to determine the environmental characteristics and abilities of the children from Turrialba considered by their teachers as talented. Similarly, the characteristics that teachers take into account to define a student as a "high achievement" child are described. This is an innovative work, not only because of the breadth of the research and the subject itself, but also because it is located in a rural area, where almost all the students come from families of lower middle socioeconomic status and whose parents, mostly, only have completed primary studies. In general, teachers determine a child as determined talented in their academic performance, and especially, in their performance in subjects such as Spanish and mathematics, leaving critical or other important aspects out of special or artistic skills. After a large number of tests that try to measure the abilities and characteristics of these children in various aspects, it is verified that not all of them have high achievement in all the facets in which the teachers of the city are outstanding, although there is a great majority that shows good self-esteem, considerable fluency and oral and written expression, good at drawing and inclined and proficient in mathematics. In all cases, early identification of these skills is recommended, in order to give these children the appropriate stimulation and motivation. The study indicated that most of these children come from integrated families and received support and encouragement from their parents. On the other hand, the need for training and orientation for teachers regarding the best way to attend these cases was evident. Likewise, it indicates the educational institutions do not have the infrastructure or the specific resources to facilitate the process. Las autoras indican que este tipo de niños (dotados, superdotados y talentosos) se encuentran en todos los niveles socioeconómicos y medios socioculturales. Sin embargo, parece ser que se dan más en algunas culturas que en otras, porque en estos casos hay una interacción entre el factor herencia y el factor ambiente.
