Abstract

During the development of the Multi-Strip Multi-Gap Resistive Plate Chambers (MMRPCs) for the Time-of-Flight (ToF) upgrade of the FOPI detector system, we have designed different versions of the Front-End Electronics (FEE). The signals from a MMRPC are read out on each side of the anode strips by an amplifier followed by a leading-edge discriminator. They are digitized in a Time-to-Amplitude Converter (TAC) followed by a Charge-to-Digital Converter (QDC). These counters are designed to provide a ToF resolution below σt ≤ 60 ps requiring an amplifier-discriminator stage with an intrinsic electronic resolution below σt(FEE) ≤ 20 ps. We describe the design steps of the FEE-card from a 4-channel version (FEEl) for the R&D phase to the final 16-channel card (FEES) for the readout of 4800 channels of the total detector array. Through these design steps we have kept the following key characteristics: Low noise σn ≤ 25 µV RMS (to the amplifier input), high gain (200) and a high band- width (1 GHz). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The resistive plate chambers (RPCs) muon trigger electronics of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector performs a number of tasks: synchronization of detector signals, optical data transmission from the detector to the trigger electronics, pattern recognition, muons momentum measurement, selection of track candidates. For the diagnostic purposes, as well as for the calibration and real-time monitoring of the RPC detectors and electronic hardware, a set of flexible diagnostic modules was designed and implemented into the field programmable gate arrays on which the trigger electronics is based. These include: multichannel counters, timing histograms, test pulses generators, diagnostic readout and data spying ("snap-shots" of the data stream). Test results presented in this paper, including tests with Large Hadron Collider-like muon beam, illustrate the performance and the usefulness of these diagnostic modules [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

The CMS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is equipped with a redundant muon trigger system based on drift tubes chambers (DT) and cathode strip chamber (CSC), for the precise position measurement, and resistive plate chambers (RPC), for the bunch crossing identification and a preliminary fast measurement of the muon transverse momentum. The CMS RPC system is constituted by 480 chambers in the barrel and 756 chambers in the forward corresponding to a total surface of about 3500 m2. The design and construction has involved many laboratories scattered all over the word. An accurate quality control procedure has been established at different levels of the production to achieve final detectors with operation parameters well inside the CMS specifications. In the summer 2006 a preliminary slice test involving a fraction of the CMS detector was performed. The performance of the RPC system with cosmic rays was studied versus the magnetic field using final running hardware and software protocols. Results on the RPC main working parameters are reported.
