In this survey, we analyze the proposals of vehicular communication systems in the context of road traffic management. Starting with the definition of communications between vehicles (V2V), vehicles-to-infrastructure (V2I) and vehicles-to-everything (V2X), we first focus on the requirements and current standards for the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), including the maximum communication delay, the communication range and the size of messages (in the case of V2I transmission). After that, we analyze the use cases in line with the implementation of intelligent traffic management and review the respective methods that support or directly manage traffic on roads. One of the primary objectives of this paper is to highlight the architectures of four classes of systems able to support vehicular traffic management and communication between vehicles and roadside infrastructure, namely: vehicular cloud computing (VCC), cloudlets, Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) and fog computing. In this context, we also present our classification of the methods for these four classes of architectures. In the end, we provide our opinion on problems and limitations concerning the deployment of mechanisms belonging to each considered architecture class.

The introduction of network function virtualization (NFV) leads to a new business model in which the Telecommunication Service Provider needs to rent cloud resources to infrastructure provider (InP) at prices as low as possible. Lowest prices can be achieved if the cloud resources can be rented in advance by allocating long-term virtual machines (VM). This is in contrast with the short-term VMs that are rented on demand and have higher costs. For this reason, we propose a proactive solution in which the cloud resource rent is planned in advance based on peak traffic knowledge. We illustrate the problem of determining the cloud resources in cloud infrastructures managed by different InPs and so as to minimize the sum of cloud resource, bandwidth and deployment costs. We formulate an integer linear problem (ILP) and due to its complexity, we introduce an efficient heuristic approach allowing for a remarkable computational complexity reduction. We compare our solution to a reactive solution in which the cloud resources are rented on demand and dimensioned according to the current traffic. Though the proposed proactive solution needs more cloud and bandwidth resources due to its peak allocation, its total resources cost may be lower than the one achieved when a reactive solution is applied. That is a consequence of the higher cost of short-term VMs. For instance, when a reactive solution is applied with traffic variation times of ten minutes, our proactive solution allows for lower total costs when the long-term VM rent is lower than the short-term VM one by 33%.

Responding to the unprecedented challenges imposed by the 5G communications ecosystem, emerging heterogeneous network architectures allow for improved integration between multiple radio access technologies. When combined with advanced cloud infrastructures, they bring to life a novel paradigm of heterogeneous cloud radio access network (H-CRAN). The novel H-CRAN architecture opens door to improved network-wide management, including coordinated cross-cell radio resource allocation. In this paper, emphasizing the lack of theoretical performance analysis, we specifically address the problem of cooperative radio resource management in H-CRAN by providing a comprehensive mathematical methodology for its real-time performance optimization. Our approach enables flexible balance between throughput and fairness metrics, as may be desired by the network operator, and demonstrates attractive benefits when compared against the state-of-the-art multiradio resource allocation strategies. The resulting algorithms are suitable for efficient online implementation, which principal feasibility is confirmed by our proof-of-concept prototype.

This paper proposes a novel advanced distribution management system (ADMS) solution based on a common operation technology platform implemented on a cloud infrastructure. It introduces a virtualization methodology that is used to transition and deploy a traditional, monolithic ADMS in a cloud environment. First, typical ADMS functional blocks (FBs) are identified and their performance is evaluated with respect to four major metrics: processor, memory, network, and storage utilization. Next, a cloud infrastructure-based ADMS solution is presented, based on a collection of FBs mapped to a set of virtual machines. Finally, the proposed architecture is validated via deployment on a physical hardware platform with two representatively sized distribution networks and emulated workloads. Obtained results show that an ADMS, as a mission-critical system, can be deployed on a cloud infrastructure, providing many benefits of virtualized solutions, without negative impact on system performance. In today’s big data era, there is a tremendously huge amount of data available. Layman users lack not only the knowledge and experience in data analytics to make sense of these data but also the computational resources for executing the analytics. In this paper, we propose and develop a layman analytics system (LAS), which provides the layman users with a scalable and ready-to-use analytics tool to automatically generate analytics workflows for classification tasks. The LAS is designed to benefit from existing open-source data analytics tools using generic ontological modeling of analytics operators from these tools as well as adaptive constraint refinement for metadata learning. Moreover, the LAS can be deployed on both public and private clouds to cater to the need of scalable computing and easy maintenance. To demonstrate the performance of the LAS, we conducted experiments with 114 data sets obtained from the University of California Irvine Machine Learning Repository. The workflows generated by the LAS were benchmarked against the OpenML whereby each data set has a range of classification accuracy obtained using classifiers designed and fine-tuned by data experts. The comparisons showed that 87 out of 114 data sets have exceeded the 50th percentile of the benchmark data. Among these 87 data sets, the LAS outperforms the 90th percentile of the benchmarks on 49 data sets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article explores the challenges associated with supporting geospatial retrievals constrained by arbitrary geometric bounds, geographic proximity, and relevance rankings. The authors' proposed solution involves the use of a lightweight, distributed spatial indexing structure, the geoavailability grid.
