To solve the problem of information fusion of integrated navigation system effectively, a new simulation platform is designed to study information fusion of integrated navigation system (INS). To generate ship motion parameters, the Ship Motion Parameters Generator Simulator (SMPGS) is designed under terrible sea conditions; several different fusion algorithms are adopted to run in parallel for information fusion processing, which are easy to be adjusted; the performance evaluation module (PEM) of fusion algorithm is established to effectively analyze fusion algorithms. The test shows that the system and all simulators work well; the Ship Simulation Console (SSC) is able to evaluate the fusion performance of the Integrated Navigation System Simulator (INSS), and the fusion accuracy meets the requirements.

This paper presents a H-shaped resonator metasur-face array which can generate vortex beams by using Pancha-ratnam-Berry phase theory. The proposed reflective metasurface operates within the frequency range from 8.13 GHz to 20.3 GHz and can convert the incident plane waves into vortex beams carrying orbital angular momentum, with more than 90% polarization conversion efficiency. Compared with other designs in literature, the proposed structure has the advantages of high performance, broad bandwidth and low profile. The reflective array for generating the vortex beam with the topological charge of -2 is generated by rotating the meta-atoms. The near electric field distributions, corresponding spectral analysis of reflected waves and far scattered patterns are achieved by simulation to verify the effectiveness of the proposed metasurface.

In this work, we propose a novel reconfigurable frequency selective radar absorber that exhibits modes switching capacity between absorption and transmission bands. The proposed absorber is composed of two layers of periodic metallic patterns printed on two separated dielectric substrates, and an air spacer is sandwiched between them. On top layer, the metallic strips and resistors are applied to generate wide absorption band. While the bottom layer is made of metallic strips incorporated with PIN diode, which is used to switch operational modes between absorption and transmission bands. When the diode is in OFF state, a passband with insertion loss about −2 dB is observed at the resonating frequency of 4.88 GHz, and the absorber exhibits more than 90% absorption from 7.73 GHz to 20.87 GHz. On the contrary, when the diode is in ON state, the absorption above 90% extends from 7.3 GHz to 20.3 GHz. Since our design has good performances in switchable transmission and absorption bands, it can be used to shield electromagnetic waves in the absorption band while can still communicate with the other remote environment/aircrafts at will through the switchable transmission band. Thus, it has many wide applications in radar cross section reduction.

A design and implementation method of radar time domain waveform based on FPGA is presented in this paper, in order to achieve the waveform library building, waveform selection or agility in the transmitter of cognitive radar system. First, the resident phase method and the waveform parameter design method are used to feedback the emission waveform parameters. Then, the DDS (Direct Digital Synthesizer) technique is used to design the adjustable parameter module. Finally, the variable waveform output is generated by calling the lookup table. Simulation analysis and FPGA implementation show that the results have the advantage of waveform variable, parameters adjustable and having synchronization signal. Traditional signal generator or signal generated methods cannot meet the specific needs of cognitive radar signal processing system test because of the immutable or not applicable waveform. The realization of waveform variability is the first step towards intelligent radar.

Electromagnetic illusion device has attracted much attention in recent years because it could make an arbitrary object appear as a pre-designed one, and thus has many potential applications in camouflage, optical and/or microwave detection. However, TO based illusion device requires lossless double-negative materials. It is difficult to put the equipment into practice for the tough work to achieve the needed parameters in electromagnetic and optical spectra. Some easier ways to realize the improved illusion devices are proposed, in which only anisotropic and inhomogeneous media with positive components are required, but the experimental performance usually needs thousands of varying unit cells. Here we show that some illusion devices can actually be realized with simplified routes, and they are easier to implement with simpler parameters than previous ones. Numerical simulation and experimental results are presented to verify the good performance of the simplified illusion devices. Our design may give rise to new inspirations for the strategy to make the novel TO based device close to reality.

Parity-time (PT)-symmetric system has many interesting phenomenons. In this talk, we focus on the transmission and scattering properties of this kind of system. For the transmission property, the concept of PT symmetry in SPPs is proposed and confirmed. By introducing periodic modulation of the effective refractive index in SPP system, the asymmetric propagation is theoretically predicted and numerically demonstrated. After validation of this concept, we apply it in two applications: PT-waveguide and PT-cloak. Both two applications further illustrate the wide applicability of this concept in SPP system and more PT-devices for SPP wave can be envisioned.

As the spacing between the flying head/slider and the rotating disk in hard disk drives (HDDs) continues to decrease, some asperities on disk surface may lead to contacts and collisions between the magnetic head and disk, generating friction and wear which would then damage the working stability of HDD system. To investigate effect of disk surface asperity on static characteristics of air bearing films at the head/disk interface (HDI), Reynolds equation based on a linearized flow rate (LFR) model is solved by using a mesh-less method. The effects of asperity size and its location, the disk's rotating speed, the boundary pressure on the static characteristics of air bearing films are investigated. Numerical results show that the asperity's location on the disk surface has obvious effect on the pressure distribution of the air bearing film and its load carrying capacity.

Magnetic surface polariton (MSP) is a surface electromagnetic mode which is the dual of surface plasmon polaritons and has some peculiar properties. In the present paper, based on this surface mode, we design a 2D Luneburg lens for the manipulation of magnetic surface polariton. MSP-based devices may be realized using magnetic metamaterials or composite magnetic materials.

In a modern hard disk drive (HDD), when the spacing between slider and disk is on the order of 1 or 2 nm, the gaseous rarefaction effects, surface roughness, and surface accommodation effects must be taken into account. Effects of gaseous rarefaction with either surface roughness or surface accommodation were reported in literature. However, only a few of the published works have considered the combined effects simultaneously. This paper investigates the combined effects of the surface roughness mode and the surface accommodation as well as the gaseous rarefaction effects on the static characteristics of the air-bearing film in both the cases of symmetric molecular interaction and asymmetric molecular interaction.

Birds have been widely used as biological indicators for ecological research. They respond quickly to environmental changes and can be used to infer about other organisms (e.g., insects they feed on). Traditional methods for collecting data about birds involves costly human effort. A promising alternative is acoustic monitoring. There are many advantages to recording audio of birds compared to human surveys, including increased temporal and spatial resolution and extent, applicability in remote sites, reduced observer bias, and potentially lower cost. However, it is an open problem for signal processing and machine learning to reliably identify bird sounds in real-world audio data collected in an acoustic monitoring scenario. Some of the major challenges include multiple simultaneously vocalizing birds, other sources of non-bird sound (e.g., buzzing insects), and background noise like wind, rain, and motor vehicles.

The Ninth Annual Machine Learning for Signal Processing (MLSP) Data Competition Committee has hosted a bird classification challenge at Kaggle.com (http://www.kaggle.com/c/mlsp-2013-birds). For this year's competition, participants were asked to develop classification algorithms to reliably identify the set of bird species in real-world audio data collected in an acoustic monitoring scenario. In this paper, we (the organizers of the competition) briefly describe the application, the data, the rules, and the outcomes of the competition. An MLSP record number of 79 teams entered the contest. We provided training data to the participants. The entries were tested using disjoint test data. The participants had access to the test data, but not the test labels. A separate multi-author long paper to summarize the new methods, which were contributed by multiple teams, will be included in this year's conference proceedings. The two top ranking teams described their approaches in two separate companion papers, all of which will appear in this year's conference proceedings. The first place team, whose entry produced an area under the receiver operating curve (ROC) of 0.956, is Gabor Fodor from Budapest University of Technology and Economics in Budapest, Hungary. The second place team, whose entry produced an area under the ROC of 0.951, consists of Hong Wei Ng and Thi Ngoc Tho Nguyen from Advanced Digital Sciences Center, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Singapore, Singapore.

Resistors in anisotropic dc unit cells in the cylindrical coordinate system can be calculated by two approaches: approximate and accurate model. We give the two models and compare their performances with numerical simulations. Our data show the two methods can produce very similar results.

It is a significant challenge to detect a transparent object using conventional visual sensors. In this paper, we show that the characteristics of transparent objects under different lighting conditions (normal light and laser light) can be exploited for improved detection accuracy. The authors analyzed the object characteristics and found a novel method for transparent object detection. GrabCut[11] method is used for the image segmentation. However, the transparent object cannot be detected from color or depth images using GrabCut, because transparent objects always shows the color of background. So, we propose a method of transparent object detection using not only color image but also laser reflectance intensity image. Highlight spots from color image can be used for detection candidate areas of transparent objects. These candidate areas is used for GrabCut as bounding rectangle input. Thereafter, segmentation by GrabCut is applied to depth images and laser reflectance intensity images. Bottle-shaped transparent objects are correctly detected within short distance by the visual sensor using the proposed method. In addition, other evaluations show the robustness and the limits of our method for different shapes, materials, distance and background.

In this research, we used EEG signals to analyze gender processing with the ERSP method. Not only facial images, but also images of clothing and shoes, were used. We applied the ICA method to obtain a gender-related component which appeared quite significant in the majority of electrode sites for the occipital lobe. This showed differences of energy between the two genders, even for the clothing and shoe images. Our results indicate that not only facial gender processing, but also a gender discrimination task for objects influences the energy of EEGs from 50 ms after the onset of stimuli at all frequencies, especially lower band. This provides convincing evidence for rapidity of gender processing.

On the basis of analyzing complexity greenhouse environment information and variety of modem sensor, considering the characteristics of greenhouse environment control multi-sensor information fusion technique is used in the greenhouse control system, and the Control strategy is the priority regulation and the combination of fuzzy control technique. The greenhouse environment control system hardware is designed upon the core architecture of single chip processor AT89S52 and LAN universal interface chip RTL8019AS. Simultaneously, the structural functions, hardware configuration, and software design of the whole system are described. Analysis shows that the intelligent controller can adjust temperature and humidity accurately can meet intelligent greenhouse control requirements of various scales.

The inventory management of coal plays a significant role in the whole operation of thermal power plants. This paper analysis the features of coal inventory management of thermal power plants. According to H Corporation's own situation, especially the changing prices of coal and demand of electricity during a year, a practical inventory model with the target of minimizing the loss of profit and the permission of generating excess electricity was built. On the basis of the solving results of the 18 concrete models of the combination of 3 coal prices, 3 excess generating rates and 2 safety stock levels, the optimal safety stock was found. And the quantity of excess electricity to generate and coal to purchase during a year were also suggested.

The authors aim at recognition of multiple objects by using robot vision and its manipulation. In the case where multiple objects are arranged in a shelf, front objects may conceal some objects behind them. A robot can recognize these objects if it can recognize the front objects using prior knowledge and remove them with its arm. However, it sometimes fails to recognize the objects because of the lack of good features, a bad lighting condition etc. Here, we proposed a new method of the multi-object recognition using the manipulation. Recognized objects are removed using pickup motion. Unrecognized objects are pushed for changing the angle when the robot cannot recognize them. We show the experimental results of our proposed method. From the results, we can confirm that the manipulation is useful for improving the multi-object recognition.
