Geographic Information System (GIS) is the essential data management and visualization platform for transmission and distribution power network planning, operation scheduling, and repair decision support systems. SQL-based on-the-fly rendering or pre-generated-tiles-based static rendering methods cannot meet the dynamic graphical browsing requirements of provincial-scale GIS systems for distribution networks. An object-oriented in-memory database is introduced, which loads all the geometry and attribute data into the main memory of the GIS application server. It supports all the spatial query and dynamic browser without the need to do disk I/O. The implementations of partitioned data management, spatial index, and dynamic vector graphic browsing service are detailed. The stress test results of an actual system are presented.
