Large mode area fiber with pre-compensated index profile by asymmetric stress applying part is proposed to effectively cancel out the bending effects. Mode area scalability up to ∼2500 μm2 is presented.

This paper presents fibre fabrications to achieve asymmetric core fibre for high power laser applications and high-nonlinearity fibres for Raman scattering. Fabrication results and challenges are discussed.

Atomic multi-layer graphene film as a saturable absorber was first demonstrated to be able to mode lock Ytterbium-doped fiber lasers at wavelength around 1 um. Determined by the operation conditions, single or multiple dissipative solitons (DSs) can be generated in the fiber lasers. DSs with pulse duration of 550∼630 ps were generated. As graphene can also be used to mode lock erbium-doped fiber lasers at wavelength around 1.55 um, our result shows that graphene has indeed wavelength-independent saturable absorption, which could be exploited to mode lock fiber lasers with various operating wavelengths.

Bound solitons are observed in a fiber laser passively mode-locked by carbon nanotube saturable absorber for the first time. Such bound solitons are observed to be stable, and have the characteristic of discrete, fixed soliton separations and phase difference of π. Our results once again show that the bound soliton emission is an intrinsic feature of the mode-locked soliton fiber lasers.

Experimental observation of different types of vector solitons such as the brigth-bright, dark-dark, and dark-bright vector soltions in single mode fiber lasers is reported. Experimental techniques for observing each of the vector solitons are explained. Special features of the vector solitons in fiber lasers are numerically simulated and compared with the experiments.
