This article proposes to integrate two entities, the Internet of Things and a cognitive dynamic system (CDS), and studies a smart home scenario as the application of interest. As a people-centric IoT, the smart home aims to enhance the intelligence level of the living environment and improve the quality of human life. Cognition, the distinct principles of which are perception?action cycle, memory, attention, intelligence, and language, can play a key role to pave the way for building truly smart homes. With cognition as its foundation, the engineering paradigm of CDS provides step-by-step guidelines for systematic development of smart homes. Digital communication is both pervasive and vital across society. This creates a growing public interest in the technical standards that proscribe public communications. The public is demanding open standards. The rallying cry "Open Standards" means different things to different groups. This article reviews the different needs of specific groups of society and develops ten different requirements for open standards. To implement these requirements, changes to the rules and procedures of standardization organizations, international bodies (e.g., WIPO, WTO), and national patent office rules are proposed. Interestingly, technical changes, in the form of new standardized protocols, rather than legal or policy changes, appear to be the most important changes to meet the requirements of open standards. The article offers information on how reputation systems can help organized networks in the society. It is mentioned that wireless networks such as Fourth Generation (4G) and Internet-based peer-to-peer networks depend on cooperation of nodes, reputation systems help nodes decide with whom to cooperate and which nodes to void. Reputation systems have been applied in various discipline such as economics, computer science and social science. Details concerning the features and fundamental questions common to reputation system is presented, followed by discussion on its importance in everyday life.

The article offers information on how Forth Generation (4G) technologies can improve the community through Wireless Mesh Networks (WMN). It is argued that the next-generation 4G networks is neighborhood WMN, it reflects the trade-off between the immediate self-interest of the user as well as the user's need for social contacts.
