UV solar radiation can have negative effects on human skin and eyes, in particular for outdoor workers that are exposed several hours per day under the Sun. The real time monitoring of exposure dose can be an effective protection, but several criticalities exist that hinder the full development of a smart device realized for this scope.

In the paper is presented a study related to the influence of soil resistivity on grounding system design for a 110 kV substation. The variation of the dispersion resistances and of the touch voltage and step voltage are studied depending on the soil resistivity. At the same time, the relationship between soil resistivity, touch voltages and site isolation are studied.

Viral infections cause a large number of deaths worldwide. During the inflammatory process secondary to a viral infection, edema may appear, that is, fluid may accumulate in the interstitial tissue. Computational modeling is a tool that can be used to understand this phenomenon better. This paper proposes a first-step model to describe the formation of viral cardiac edema. In particular, this paper presents a model that describes the increase in interstitial pressure during viral infections. Preliminary computational results show that the model can qualitatively reproduce results described in the literature.

In this work an analysis of achieved results during the Italian campaign to cope with interferences caused by LTE systems operating in the 800 MHz band on DVB-T user terminals is reported. Since 2012 this activity has been carried out in the framework of HELP Interferenze project supported by the Italian Ministry of Economic Development (MiSE) in cooperation with mobile Operators. In the paper an approach based on the definition of risk areas and user issues management as well as a methodology to evaluate interference effects generated by LTE signals on DVB-T ones through numerical simulation are illustrated. An overview of project results achieved with the implementation of the above mentioned methodology, showing the reliability of this approach, is also provided.

During the last few years, European Union has supported many energy projects to enhance the role of renewables in the European Countries, in order to reduce the energy consumption and CO2 emissions of the residential sectors. In this context, the implementation of the cogeneration plant and district heating seems to be a good solution, especially thanks to the possibility of coupling those systems with renewable sources. In literature, the development of a district heating supplied by Renewable Energy Sources (RES) was investigated by several researches. However, traditional energy indices, normally used for assessing the performance of the systems are not suitable for the efficiency evaluation of generation system powered by RES. The aim of this work is to combine the energy index with an exergy index, for assessing the performance of a District Heating network, modeled with Matlab Simulink. The proposed models simulate the behavior of a microgrid connected to residential, commercial and office buildings. Those simulations have been developed for three Italian cities, located in three different climatic zones (Milan, Rome, and Palermo). The results showed the positive impact of the exergy index for the assessment of a real district heating powered by RES.

Nowadays the main focus of energy suppliers is the migration towards smart grid. This concern arise from the anticipated transition towards transport electrification and also the increasing number of distributed renewable energy sources to be integrated. This paper presents some strategies for handling the integration of electric vehicles and renewable sources into the power grid. Balancing the renewable energy sources is one of the topics presented. Another subject of the paper is presenting demand response control strategy. All presented solutions are designed to be integrated into a smart power grid.

The concept of Smart Campus started developing in the last years as a possible adaptation of the Smart city model to the university campuses. The transformation of a standard campus into a Smart Campus requires the development of an evaluation framework which allow to assess the state of the art by means of composite indicators. Following a new methodology, the aim of this project is to define a global set of indicators. Those composite indicators describe each aspect of the campus: (economic, energy environmental and social issues) in order to give a complete and holistic evaluation. The application on a real case study show the flexibility of this model.

Transmission of digital information is one of the most important aspects of modern technology. It can be accomplished along paths of nanomagnets, following the paradigm of the so-called nanomagnetic logic. When the clocking of nanomagnets is obtained by means of spin-Hall effect, interesting magnetization configurations are revealed by micromagnetic simulations. In this work, we show details of the non-uniform states that can be excited in a perpendicular nanomagnet for applications in nanomagnetic logic.

Magnetic materials, arranged in proper geometries, are used for the realization of microwave oscillators, like spin-transfer-torque and spin-Hall oscillators. In both cases, the synchronization of more oscillators allows the increase of the output power, that is needed for practical technological applications. In this paper, we show simulations of the synchronization of three spin-Hall oscillators, driven by a direct electrical current. The enlarged and coherent wavefront that is obtained can be used for on-chip communication between different devices.

This paperwork proposes a more economical and efficient Local Public Transport (LPT) transit routes for Rome. Optimization of public transit will result in greater capacity and efficiency for transit users. This proposal is based on real data of the public transit network of Rome, elaborated by an Ant Colony System (ACS) algorithm. The source information has been obtained via recorded phone data of transit users.

Deployed sensors in the smart city enable the smart mobility by managing flows of people, cars and goods. However, in the tourism scenario, when a large amount of sensors cannot be deployed in the environment, the user mobility can be performed by using cell traffic data of users equipped with mobile terminals, enabling the Smart Sightseeing. In this paper, we exploit the identification of the users' flow applied to the tourism. We discover the position information of tourists based on the activity performed through their mobile terminal (e.g. the smartphone), i.e. we localize the presence of the smartphone user in a given zone of the city. Then, we associate the tourist flows to the position of the monuments and other important attractions or events. In this way, local administrations can counteract high-density tourist areas and optimize tourism facilities.

This article examines the correlation between information collected from mobile phones of commuters and maps of Local Public Transport (LPT), in an urban area: Rome. The city of Rome widespread on a large urban area, is where many residents, students, visitors and tourist every day commute even from extreme suburban areas.

This paper presents the world's first technical and regulatory pilot on Licensed Shared Access (LSA) in the 3GPP Band 40, i.e. 2.3–2.4 GHz band, enacted in Italy to delve deeper on the role that spectrum sharing has for efficient use of spectrum. The Italian Administration, in collaboration with the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission and the support of a consortium of industrial partners, has been the first in the world to promote and organize a LSA pilot on a large scale to verify both the technical feasibility and regulatory compliance of this technique applied to a real, live LTE network. The paper firstly introduces the pilot architecture and configuration and describes the sharing framework in the Italian scenario, then key measurements results are presented. The pilot implements a distributed control architecture in compliance with CEPT and ETSI provisions. Measurement results show the sharing based on LSA is feasible to provide mobile broadband services in the 2300–2400 MHz band without detriment to incumbent services.

In this paper we propose a computational procedure to evaluate the performances of inductive blocking devices used for the mitigation of indirect lightning effects on electrical and electronic equipment in the avionic environment. The non linear behavior of the blocking devices are simulated using a finite difference scheme in time domain. Computations and experimental results are compared and discussed.

In this paper the effects of the crystal grain dimensions upon the global magnetic behavior in Goss-textured magnetic materials is investigated. Three samples of Grain Oriented (GO) Fe-Si steels with different average grain size have been analyzed by means of both vector hysteresis measurements and simulations via the Single Hysteron Model.
