3. A Symmetry Calibration Procedure for Sensor-to-Airframe Misalignments in Wind Tunnel Data

Abstract

We propose a calibration method that transforms data from wind tunnel experiments into a coordinate frame where asymmetries with respect to the symmetry plane of most fixed-wing aircraft are minimized in a least-squares sense. The method applies to all types of aircraft that include a symmetry plane but is particularly relevant for small and low-cost unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Our approach is simple to implement using standard nonlinear program (NLP) solvers. Results for a wind-tunnel data set of a small fixed-wing UAV demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed calibration method.

Abstract

In this paper we present a comparison of the robustness of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) to other classifiers in the presence of uncertainty of the objects localization in SAR image. We present a framework for simulating simple SAR images, translating the object of interest systematically and testing the classification performance. Our results show that where other classification methods are very sensitive to even small translations, CNN is quite robust to translational variance, making it much more useful in relation to Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) in a real life context.

Abstract

Random linear network coding (RLNC) can enhance the reliability of multimedia transmissions over lossy communication channels. However, RLNC has been designed for equal size packets, while many efficient multimedia compression schemes, such as variable bitrate (VBR) video compression, produce unequal packet sizes. Padding the unequal packet sizes with zeros to the maximum packet size creates an overhead on the order of 20%–50% or more for typical VBR videos. Previous padding overhead reduction approaches have focused on packing the unequal packet sizes into fixed size packets, e.g., through packet bundling or chaining and fragmentation. We introduce an alternative padding reduction approach based on coding macro-symbols (MSs), whereby an MS is a fixed-sized part of a packet. In particular, we introduce a new class of RLNC, namely MS RLNC which conducts RLNC across columns of MSs, instead of the conventional RLNC across columns of complete packets of equal size. Judiciously arranging the source packets into columns of MSs, e.g., through shifting the source packets horizontally relative to each other, supports favorable MS RLNC coding properties. We specify the MS RLNC encoding and decoding mechanisms and analyze their complexity for a range of specific MS arrangement strategies within the class of MS RLNC. We conduct a comprehensive padding overhead evaluation encompassing both previous approaches of packing the unequal size packets into fixed size packets as well as the novel MS RLNC approaches with long VBR video frame size traces. We find that for small RLNC generation sizes that support low network transport delays, MS RLNC achieves the lowest padding overheads; while for large generation sizes, both the previous packing approaches and the novel MS RLNC approaches effectively reduce the padding overhead. Abstract

Creating efficient finite field implementations has been an active research topic for several decades. Many applications in areas such as cryptography, signal processing, erasure coding and now also network coding depend on this research to deliver satisfactory performance. In this paper we investigate the use of prime fields with a field size of 232 - 5, as this allows implementations which combines high field sizes and low complexity. First we introduce the algorithms needed to apply prime field arithmetics to arbitrary binary data. After this we present the initial throughput measurements from a benchmark application written in C++. These results are finally compared to different binary and binary extension field implementations. The results show that the prime field implementation offers a large field size while maintaining a very good performance. Abstract

Electrolyte-gated organic field-effect transistors (EGOFETs) have been fabricated using 6,13-Bis (triisopropyl-silylethynyl) pentacene (TIPS-pentacene) as an organic semiconductor active material. Despite the organic semiconductor being deposited in air by drop casting, our EGOFETs showed performance comparable with state-of-the-art technologies, and devices kept their functionalities while gated with saline solution at 37 °C for several days. In addition, the biocompatibility of the material was successfully investigated, promoting the use of TIPS-pentacene -based EGOFETs for biosensing applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Device-to-device communication is currently a hot research topic within 3GPP. Even though D2D communication has been part of previous ad hoc, meshed and sensor networks proposals, the main contribution by 3GPP is that the direct communication among two devices is carried out over a dynamically assigned, licensed spectrum; thus, it is under full control of the cellular network. D2D communication creates a market potential for new services, new approaches to efficient spectrum use, and security concepts. This is especially true if D2D communication is extended to larger communication groups organized in meshed clusters. In this article, we discuss the potential and shortcomings of D2D communication as proposed today, advocating for the use of network coding as an enabling technology for enhanced security and communication efficiency using the PlayNCool and CORE protocols as key examples to deliver smarter D2D systems. Abstract

With its ability to reduce the number of transmissions in lossy networks as well as its potential to simplify the design and required signaling of communication protocols, network coding has emerged as an attractive solution to harness the power of wireless and cooperative networks in order to provide higher throughput and lower energy expenditure. This article shows that network coding?s complexity is not an issue for current mobile devices even without hardware acceleration. We provide real-life measurements of energy savings gains of two design styles of network coding, namely, inter- and intra-session network coding using commercial platforms, including Open-Mesh routers and various mobile phones. We demonstrate that the energy per bit invested in coding/decoding operations can be several orders of magnitude smaller than that used for transmission/reception, while also maintaining processing speeds as high as several hundreds of Mb/s or even several Gb/s depending on the device and coding configuration used.
