In an amusement park, an attraction-visiting route considering the waiting time and traveling time improves visitors’ satisfaction and experience. We focus on Ising machines to solve the problem, which are recently expected to solve combinatorial optimization problems at high speed by mapping the problems to Ising models or quadratic unconstrained binary optimization (QUBO) models. We propose a mapping of the visiting-route recommendation problem in amusement parks to a QUBO model for solving it using Ising machines. By using an actual Ising machine, we could obtain feasible solutions 15 times faster with almost the same accuracy as the simulated annealing method for the visiting-route recommendation problem.

Risk management is an essential part of software security. Assemblyline is a software security tool developed by the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security (CCCS) for malware detection and analysis. In this paper, we examined the performance of Assemblyline for assessing the risk of executable files. We developed and examined use-cases where Assemblyline is included as part of a security safety net assessing vulnerabilities that would lead to risk. Finally, we considered Assemblyline’s utility in a continuous integration / delivery context using our test results.

An uncoupled $125-\mu\mathrm{m}$ -cladding 4-core multicore fibre (MCF) with record low-loss of 0.155dB/km among uncoupled MCFs was realized. Span loss of 60.2km MCF was reduced to less than 10dB including fan-in and fan-out. Inter core crosstalk of the MCF is less than −60dB/100km.

Silica glass structure is simulated applying different annealing conditions that intend to imitate a fiber drawing process using molecular dynamic simulation in order to compare structural properties of differently processed glasses.

Uncoupled 1,170-core single-mode fibers with 750µm cladding diameter were successfully designed and fabricated by using the stack-and-draw based method. We also considered possibilities to reduce the cladding diameter to ~400µm keeping 1,000 cores.

A simulation method has been developed that can predict the microbending loss of single mode fibers. The method is found to well reproduce the microbending loss data of the experimental fibers drawn in ourfacilitv.

100-core fibers with $320\mu m$ cladding diameter and $\lambda cc$ less than 1310nm were successfully designed and fabricated for data-center applications. Low cross-talk less than −25dB at 1km was obtained by the effect of air-hole, which indicated clear advantages compared to the F-trench fibers.

This paper presents a digital signage system that encourages fan engagement at sports venues. The system detects users' faces and displays the team player who looks most similar to the user in a composite image that they can capture as a souvenir. We describe the design choices of this photo booth and evaluate the similarity search accuracy in several user studies. The system has been operating continuously at a baseball stadium with consistently high user engagement. So far over 12,000 people have taken their souvenir photo.

In this paper, we propose a novel framework for integrating geometrical measurements of monocular visual simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) and depth prediction using a convolutional neural network (CNN). In our framework, SLAM-measured sparse features and CNN-predicted dense depth maps are fused to obtain a more accurate dense 3D reconstruction including scale. We continuously update an initial 3D mesh by integrating accurately tracked sparse features points. Compared to prior work on integrating SLAM and CNN estimates [26], there are two main differences: Using a 3D mesh representation allows as-rigid-as-possible update transformations. We further propose a system architecture suitable for mobile devices, where feature tracking and CNN-based depth prediction modules are separated, and only the former is run on the device. We evaluate the framework by comparing the 3D reconstruction result with 3D measurements obtained using an RGBD sensor, showing a reduction in the mean residual error of 38% compared to CNN-based depth map prediction alone.

Many wireless networks operate in the presence of distance-dependent path–loss in a fading environment with a Poisson interference field. In these networks, the aggregate interference can be modeled as an α-stable process with a known characteristic function. In this study, the authors revisit performance analysis of wireless systems operating in a Nakagamim fading channel. In particular, our emphasis is on emerging mobile technologies that offer numerous benefits, but their performance is not quite well explored. We investigate a mobile receiver operating in an interference-limited network with α- stable interference, and derive closed-form exact expressions for signal-to-interference (SIR) statistics in 1D, 2D, and 3D network topologies. Consequently, in contrast to studies that are mainly based on the characteristic function of the α-stable distribution to evaluate system performance, we use the traditional probability distribution technique to derive exact expressions for outage probability and average symbol error probability (ASEP) that are useful in quantifying the effect of interference on the performance of a mobile receiver.

In wireless networks, interference modeling is essential for performance analysis and protocol design, since it is the most important cause of performance degradation. The interferers are usually assumed to be random and their locations modeled by a homogeneous Poisson point process (PPP). Performance analysis in wireless networks with Poisson field of interferers is mainly based on the characteristic function of the α-stable distribution which is not given in a convenient form for performance evaluation. This limitation is due to the α-stable distribution having only one known closed-form probability density function (pdf) when the characteristic exponent α = 1/2 which corresponds to path-loss exponent η = 4. However, propagation studies have observed wireless channels with η = 3 and η = 6. Therefore, in this paper, in addition to the known distribution for η = 4, we present exact pdf expressions for α = 1/3 (η = 6) and α = 2/3 (η = 3), and use these distributions to derive exact expressions for several performance metrics of binary digital transmissions over a Nakagami fading channel. The analytical results are validated with Monte Carlo simulation.

High speed trains are becoming a popular means of transportation all over the world, such that it is necessary to develop and deploy an infrastructure to provide broadband to passengers on the train. However, there are several challenges to high speed communication systems including the fact that channel conditions change drastically hindering channel estimation accuracy and overall system performance, which leads to link failure. Cooperative relaying is one of the novel schemes used in wireless communication to improve throughput and system performance. In this paper, we propose a general analytical approach to evaluate the performance of a dual-hop network with a fixed relay on a train carriage in a Nakagami-m fading environment. The relay is assumed to employ either decode-and-forward (DF) or amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying scheme. Both, the relay and destination nodes are assumed to be mobile and follow the Random direction (RD) mobility model. Under this setting, we derive exact expressions for outage probability and average bit error probability (ABEP). The derived analytical results are general and applicable to several network topology dimensions, fading conditions, and digital modulation schemes. The analytical results are verified by Monte Carlo simulations.

In this paper we study the association performance of a small cell base station (SBS) when mobile users (MUs) are randomly located around the said SBS according to a homogeneous Poisson point process. In the analysis, we consider noise only, interference-plus-noise, and interference-limited systems. For each case of association metric, a closed form expression for the outage probability of a randomly located MU operating over a Nakagami-m fading environment is derived. The outage probability of each MU is then used to obtain the probability that at least N MUs are associated to the SBS of interest. We then study the effects of MU density, SBS transmit power, association threshold, path-loss exponent, and amount of co-channel interference on the association performance of SBSs deployed over a cellular network.

A hollow-core fibre with six shunt cores demonstrates complete higher order core mode attenuation in less than 0.5m, without affecting loss or PM properties when compared with a fibre with two shunt cores.

Next-generation wireless networks entail a high degree of flexibility, efficient use of available radio resources and an energy-efficient operation at low operational costs. They typically integrate use of technologies such as spectrum management, interference mitigation and management, and energy efficient technologies to deliver the broadband experience. This paper aims to project the 2020 broadband wireless network requirements for Uganda, a developing country. It identifies major environmental constraints that current and future network architectures will face, in particular, with respect to deployment density and throughput requirements. The Wireless World Research Forum wireless traffic model used in this paper projects throughput requirements as an aggregation of individual service requirements, service usage, and user behaviour. Our focus is on voice, mobile Internet and video that are currently among the highly utilized services in Uganda. In similar studies for developed countries, next generation radio access networks are expected to deliver twenty times more throughput and capacity than current networks.

This paper presents a novel shape descriptor for topology-based segmentation of 3D video sequence. 3Dvideo is a series of 3D meshes without temporal correspondences which benefit for applications including compression, motion analysis, and kinematic editing. In 3Dvideo, both 3D mesh connectivities and the global surface topology can change frame by frame. This characteristic prevents from making accurate temporal correspondences through the entire 3D mesh series. To overcome this difficulty, we propose a two-step strategy which decomposes the entire sequence into a series of topologically coherent segments using our new shape descriptor, and then estimates temporal correspondences on a per-segment basis. We demonstrate the robustness and accuracy of the shape descriptor on real data which consist of large non-rigid motion and reconstruction errors.

Carbon nanotubes are sometimes treated with an acid or mixture of acids to increase their solubility. From results of our study of single-walled carbon nanotubes, we reported that a CNT-based electrode can detect oxidation of low density-lipoproteins. As described herein, we investigated the effects of acid treatment time on electrode sensitivity for detection of oxidized low-density lipoproteins. Response capabilities of CNT-based electrodes for detecting ox-LDL were improved by acid treatment. However, further increased treatment time degraded their sensitivity. Although detailed mechanisms related to the response are under investigation, results show that an optimum condition exists for acid treatment condition to detect ox-LDL using an electrode.

19-core multi core fiber which has 10 times higher core density than 250µm coated SMF was realized. Each core was located on the three layered hexagonal grid in the 200µm cladding keeping low crosstalk properties.

7-core 2-mode fibers with large Aeff of 170µm2 (LP01 mode), and 250µm2 (LP11 mode) were successfully designed and fabricated. We measured optical properties, and confirmed large Aeff and low cross-talks.

The developments of novel transmission fibers, to realize future high capacity transmission, are introduced. Three directions are considered to realize novel transmission fibers.

The minimum fiber diameter of Multi-Core SMF was investigated taking the cladding diameter, core pitch and attenuation loss into account. A way to suppress the failure rate in case of high core density was also discussed.

We designed and fabricated novel Leakage Channel Fibers (LCFs) which ahve circular single air-hole ring. Large effective core area (Aeff), low attenuation loss and low bending loss were achieved by fabricated circular hole fibers (CHFs).

This paper presents a novel algorithm for estimating complex human motion from 3D video. We base our algorithm on a model-based approach which uses a complete surface mesh of a 3D human model to be matched with 3D video data. This type of method usually works well against partly incomplete input data. However, it fails to estimate what we call ldquocomplex motionrdquo: where some parts of the body touch each other for a long period. It is because the touching deteriorates the visibility of the neighbouring surface, which causes matching failures. In order to solve this problem, we introduce a ldquovisibilityrdquo measure for each mesh vertex that represents how it is occluded or missed on the observed surface. Using the ldquovisibilityrdquo we selectively suppress the outliers caused by low observability while traditional surface matching algorithms try to find corresponding area for the entire surface and cannot converge to the real posture by definition. Our algorithm shows improvements over naive surface matching algorithm on both synthesized and real 3D video.
