In this paper, a novel single image super-resolution (SR) method based on progressive-iterative approximation is proposed. To preserve textures and clear edges, the image SR reconstruction is treated as an image progressive-iterative fitting procedure and achieved by iterative interpolation. Due to different features in different regions, we first employ the nonsubsampled contourlet transform (NSCT) to divide the image into smooth regions, texture regions, and edges. Then, a hybrid interpolation scheme based on curves and surfaces is proposed, which differs from the traditional surface interpolation methods. Specifically, smooth regions are interpolated by the non-uniform rational basis spline (NURBS) surface geometric iteration. To retain textures, control points are increased, and the progressive-iterative approximation of the NURBS surface is employed to interpolate the texture regions. By considering edges in an image as curve segments that are connected by pixels with dramatic changes, we use NURBS curve progressive-iterative approximation to interpolate the edges, which sharpens the edges and can maintain the image edge structure without jaggy and block artifacts. Good-quality video coding for low-bitrate applications is essential for narrow bandwidth transmission and limited capacity storage. In this paper, we propose an adaptive downsampling-based coding model to improve the low-bitrate compression efficiency of high-efficiency video coding (HEVC). At the encoder, the video sequence is adaptively divided into key frames (KFs) and nonkey frames (NKFs), which are encoded at the original resolution and at a reduced resolution, respectively. At the decoder, a super-resolution method based on deep learning and gradient transformation is used to upscale the NKFs. To improve the quality of NKFs without additional information during decoding, we use motion estimation to find the most similar blocks between the upscaled NKFs and the associated high-resolution KFs. Then, an adaptive patching-based method is used to warp the low-quality NKF blocks with the high-quality KF blocks. Experimental results indicate that for standard high-definition test video sequences, the maximum improvement in the peak signal-to-noise ratio can reach 3.54 dB, and the critical bitrate can reach 9.89 Mb/s at a low bitrate when compared to HEVC. Moving sand pictures are interesting devices that can be used to generate an infinite number of unique scenes when repeatedly being flipped over. However, little work has been done on attempting to simulate the process of picture formulation. In this paper, we present an approach capable of generating images in the style of moving sand pictures. Our system defines moving sand pictures in a few steps, such as initialization, segmentation and physical simulation, so that a variety of moving sand pictures including mountain ridges, desert, clouds and even regular patterns can be generated by either automatic or semi-automatic via interaction during initialization and segmentation. Because the B-spline surface intersection is a fundamental operation in geometric design software, it is important to make the surface intersection operation robust and efficient. As is well known, affine arithmetic is robust for calculating the surface intersection because it is able to not only find every branch of the intersection, but also deal with some singular cases, such as surface tangency. However, the classical affine arithmetic is defined only for the globally supported polynomials, and its computation is very time consuming, thus hampering its usefulness in practical applications, especially in geometric design. In this paper, we extend affine arithmetic to calculate the range of recursively and locally defined B-spline basis functions, and we accelerate the affine arithmetic-based surface intersection algorithm by using a GPU. Moreover, we develop efficient methods to thin the strip-shaped intersection regions produced by the affine arithmetic-based intersection algorithm, calculate the intersection points, and further improve their accuracy. This paper presents a geometric algorithm for the generation of uniform cubic B-spline curves interpolating a sequence of data points under tangent and curvature vectors constraints. To satisfy these constraints, knot insertion is used to generate additional control points which are progressively repositioned using corresponding geometric rules. Compared to existing schemes, our approach is capable of handling plane as well as space curves, has local control, and avoids the solution of the typical linear system. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is illustrated through several comparative examples. Applications of the method in NC machining and shape design are also outlined. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
