Wideband conformal transmitarrays at E-band are developed for multibeam applications in this article. A triple-layer element with double split rings is presented for wideband transmissions, achieving a 360° continuous phase variation range at 74 GHz with less than 2.3 dB transmission loss. A comprehensive design methodology of multibeam conformal transmitarrays is demonstrated for various platforms with different curvatures. To validate the theoretical analysis, conformal transmitarrays with two different curvatures are designed, fabricated, and measured. Multiple radiation beams are realized between ± 30° and ± 45° for the two prototypes, respectively. Good agreement is obtained between simulation and measurement. The 3 dB gain bandwidths are 30% from 66.5 to 90 GHz, and 27.8% from 68 to 90 GHz for the two designs, respectively, covering the entire E-band. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work, the intentional insertion of slots in metal gate (MG) is introduced to solve the dishing issue for the double-diffused drain MOSFET (DDDMOSFET) fabrication. For traditional DDDMOSFET, the gate oxide layer in slots will be reserved to improve the device reliability, which requires an additional photomask to screen the gate/slot regions during the following sidewall formation and source/drain (S/D) implantation. This makes the process more complicated with increased cost. Without that additional photomask, it is proposed that the removal of gate oxide layer in slots can directly allow the floating S/D formation and the followed Ni silicidation there. It is demonstrated that such a novel process can not only relieve the MG dishing issue but can also effectively result in ~16% higher ON current and comparable OFF current for both N- and P-DDDMOSFETs without threshold voltage shift after applying electrical stress on gates. It is also revealed that the floating silicided S/Ds in slots have negligible influence on device breakdown characteristics. By saving one photomask, this work proposes a novel solution for the effective integration of core devices with very small feature sizes and high-voltage (HV) devices with large feature sizes in the same die, which is a common challenge for display driver chip fabrication using high- ${k}$ /MG (HK/MG) technology. In the test case generation process of combinatorial testing, particle swarm optimization (PSO) is widely concerned for its simple implementation and fast convergence rate; however, it often falls into local optimum due to premature convergence. To attack this problem, a novel adaptive value measurement strategy is adopted by weighing the relationship between current test cases and historical test cases. The test case with the minimum average hamming distance is selected as the optimal test case, and the inertial weight linear differential decrease strategy is developed to ensure better inertial weight in different search stages, further to improve the capability of generating smaller covering arrays. In addition, we integrate the simulated annealing strategy into the improved PSO to improve the ability of particles jumping out of the local optimum, and an innovative approach for generating a better covering array is proposed. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) aided wireless communications promise to provide high-speed cost-effective wireless connectivity without needing fixed infrastructure coverage. They are a key technology enabler for sixth generation (6G) wireless networks, where a three-dimensional coverage including space, aero and terrestrial networks are to be deployed to guarantee seamless service continuity and reliability. Owing to the aerodynamic requirements, it is highly desirable to employ conformal antennas that can follow the shapes of the UAVs to reduce the extra drag and fuel consumption. To enable hundred giga-bits-per-second (Gb/s) data rates and massive connectivity for 6G networks, conformal antenna arrays featured with high gains and beam scanning/multiple beams are demanded for millimeter-wave and higher-frequency-range communications. However, new challenges exist in designing and implementing high-gain conformal arrays for UAV platforms. In this article, we overview the recent advances in conformal transmitarrays for UAV-based wireless communications, introducing new design methodologies and high-lighting new opportunities to be exploited. In this article, a channel micro-Doppler ($\mu \text{D}$) signatures’ quantitative evaluation method for multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) radar system, named relative signal–noise ratio in the time–frequency domain and denoted as RSNRtf, is introduced. The impact on RSNRtf by some key dominant factors in real practical and diverse detection environments was theoretically analyzed first. Then, this proposed method is exploited to conduct effective and superior channel selection for improved human activity classification at random human target positions. Based on numerous MIMO stepped-frequency continuous wave (SFCW) radar data from eight subjects with seven activities at nine positions in a through-wall within a view angle of ±20° and up to 6-m distance away, the influence of various primary factors on the proposed method is investigated. Investigative experiments showed that the proposed method has a wide range of applicability and a high interference tolerance even for different detection distances, angles, activities, and subjects. Classification experimental results based on typical classifiers also showed that the proposed method could effectively improve human activity classification. Moreover, we can claim that the proposed method can achieve a higher outstanding performance in the channel $\mu \text{D}$ capacity evaluation and enhanced classification for the MIMO-radar-based human activity classification in free space or with a wider detection field with large angle range. A transmitarray antenna with an elliptical cylindrical shape is presented for a wide-angle multibeam radiation in this communication. The transmitarray has a cylindrical radiating aperture with an elliptical cross-section, namely, elliptical cylindrical shape. Multiple feeds can be placed on the middle horizontal plane to realize multiple beams. Inspired by a 2-D Ruze lens, the antenna shape and the phase compensation are jointly designed according to the desired maximal beam direction. Innovative methods including a feed refocusing analysis and a virtual focal length are utilized to achieve the phase compensation across the 3-D aperture for multiple beam radiations with a small scanning loss. In order to validate the proposed antenna, a prototype operating in the millimeter-wave (mm-wave) $E$ -band has been designed, fabricated, and measured. By changing the position of the feeding gain horn along the refocusing arc, the main beam of antenna can be scanned in 11 directions. The measured peak boresight realized gain is 27 dBi at 70.5 GHz and a beam coverage of ±43° with a less than 2.7 dB scanning loss is obtained. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

2-D layered MoS2 is considered as a promising candidate for novel nanoelectronic devices in recent years. However, a large number of structural defects in MoS2 have been widely reported, which will greatly degrade the electrical performance of MoS2 devices. In this work, it is demonstrated that the structural defects in MoS2 can be repaired by a reasonable-power O2-plasma treatment, e.g., a 30-W O2-plasma treatment on MoS2 results in an enhanced carrier mobility of 69.82 cm2/Vs, which is 2.5 times higher than that of the untreated devices, a reduced subthreshold swing of 131.27 mV/dec, and a high ON/OFF current ratio of $3.18\times 10^{{6}}$. These are attributed to the fact that the suitable-power O2-plasma treatment can effectively repair the structural defects in MoS2 and reduce the scattering centers, improving the electrical performance of MoS2 FETs. However, a high-power O2 plasma will generate high-energy oxygen ions to bombard the MoS2, introducing more new defects and deteriorating the electrical performance of MoS2 FETs. In contrast to using multilayer frequency selective surface (FSS) elements or tightly coupled elements, a novel technique is introduced here to achieve ultrawideband planar and conformal transmitarrays, which are based on connected elements like those used in connected arrays. In particular, the elements consist of a horizontally connected slot-bowtie and vertical meander slot-lines. The elements are capable of achieving a 360° phase variation range at the highest frequency 17 GHz with the transmission loss less than 3 dB from 6 to 17 GHz. The transmitarrays have been designed, fabricated, and measured in both planar and conformal versions. Stable boresight radiation patterns from 6 to 17 GHz have been obtained for both antennas. Compared to conformal transmitarrays using multilayer FSS elements, the proposed solution has a much wider bandwidth of radiation patterns. A high-efficiency conformal transmitarray with ultrathin dual-layer Huygens element is developed. The element consists of “I” shape patches for magnetic response and “T” shape stubs for electric response printed on two metal layers of a single substrate with only 0.5 mm thickness ($\lambda _{0}$ /60 at 10 GHz). By tuning the magnetic and electric responses, the transmitting phase of the element can be changed. Eight elements are designed to cover quantized 360° phase range with a maximal 1.67 dB loss. Then, the proposed elements are employed in a small conformal transmitarray design. To improve the antenna efficiency, the elements’ dimensions are calculated by considering the oblique incidence effects. Finally, a cylindrically conformal transmitarray with a larger aperture size is simulated, fabricated, and measured. It can achieve a measured gain of 20.6 dBi with a 47% aperture efficiency. With the continually increasing demand for higher data rate and link density as well as better network coverage, wireless networks, including 5G-enabled vehicular communication network (VCN), will be designed/deployed to cover more overlapping areas, experiencing more severe interferences. As a result, interference becomes a key impediment to the improvement of network performance, thus requiring a thorough investigation. There have been numerous interference management (IM) methods, of which interference alignment (IA) has been receiving significant attention in recent years. IA compresses the dimension of interference subspace by confining multiple interfering signals into a finite subspace, so that the desired signal subspace may be maximized. However, when IA is applied to the situation where multiple interferences are from the same source, the interference subspace cannot be compressed due to the fact that if these interfering components are aligned in the same direction at their unintended receiver (Rx), they will become indistinguishable at their desired Rx. To solve this problem, we propose Inside-Out Precoding (IOP). With IOP, multiple data streams that may cause interference to the other Rx are at first pre-processed at the interfering transmitter (Tx), by employing an inner-precoder which makes the streams spatially separable, and then, by exploiting interactions among wireless signals, multiple interfering components are treated as an effective interference to which an outer-precoder is applied, so that multiple interferences can be compressed into one dimension at the interfered Rx while making them distinguishable at their desired Rx. We present two IOP realizations — forward IOP (F-IOP) and backward IOP (B-IOP) — and propose a protocol to realize the synchronization of processing parameters at the interfering Tx and its intended Rx so that the Rx can adapt itself to the precoding strategy employed at the Tx side. Our in-depth analysis and simulation results have shown that the proposed IOP can effectively manage multiple interferences from the same source while guaranteeing the performance of transmission from the interfering Tx to its intended Rx. The 1-D inverse scattering problem of super-resolving the location of discrete point shunt conductance or point impedance faults along transmission lines is considered. The results have applications to determine the structure of faults in transmission line components, such as connectors, when the available spectral information is not sufficient to obtain the spatial resolution required. The 1-D inverse scattering problem considered is formulated as a sparse reconstruction problem and convex optimization is applied to super-resolve the profile of discrete point faults in transmission lines. We extend previous results for super-resolution and prove that point faults can be super-resolved exactly with infinite precision in location when there are up to 4 point shunt conductance faults and 5–18 point shunt conductance faults if the faults are separated by $\lambda _{c}/2$ and $\lambda _{c}$ , respectively, where $\lambda _{c}$ is the minimum wavelength available in the system. This infinite precision is achieved for separations four times smaller than previous results. In addition, it is demonstrated that the location of up to 3 point impedance faults can be super-resolved exactly with infinite precision if they are separated by $\lambda _{c}/2$. Sensor-observed energy from adjacent pixels, known as the adjacency effect, influences land surface reflectivity retrieval accuracy in optical remote sensing. As the spatial resolution of thermal infrared (TIR) images increases, the adjacency effect may influence land surface temperature (LST) retrieval accuracy in TIR remote sensing. However, to our knowledge, few studies have focused on quantifying this adjacency effect on TIR measurements. In this study, a forward adjacency effect radiative transfer model (FAERTM) was developed to quantify the adjacency effect on high-spatial-resolution TIR measurements. The model was verified to be in good agreement with moderate resolution atmospheric transmission (MODTRAN) code, with a discrepancy < 0.15 K. The adjacency effect on target pixel observations was found to be negligible beyond 3 km from the line of sight. Variations in aerosol type only slightly influenced adjacency effect magnitude. However, the adjacency effect quickly increased with increasing image spatial resolution, adjacent pixel temperature, and aerosol density. According to simulation results, the adjacency effect can be > 3 K in some cases. These findings indicate that the adjacency effect should be considered when retrieving LSTs from TIR measurements, at least in some specific conditions. A novel conformal transmitarray with beam steering ability is presented. First, an ultra-thin transmitarray element consisting of three layers of identical square ring slots is developed. The element has a thickness of 0.508 mm (0.04 wavelength in the free space at 25 GHz), achieving a transmission phase range of 330° with a maximum 3.6 dB loss. The element is then applied to a curved transmitarray conformal to a cylindrical surface fed by a standard gain horn with about a 10-dBi gain. A prototype is fabricated radiating a boresight beam with a peak measured gain of 19.6 dBi and an aperture efficiency of 25.1%. Second, when the transmitting surface of the above array is divided into two parts from the middle with different main beam directions, the combined beam can be radiated to an oblique angle with respect to the boresight direction. Using this method, a mechanical beam scanning conformal transmitarray antenna is designed. Its size is about 2.5 times larger than the fixed-beam one and consists of six transmitting surfaces with main beams directed to different angles. By rotating the feed horn to different positions, the main beam of the array can be switched to ±15°, ±10°, ±5°, and 0°. Evapotranspiration (ET) is one of the key variables in the water and energy exchange between land surface and atmosphere. This paper develops an end-member-based two-source approach for estimating land surface ET (i.e., the ESVEP model) from remote sensing data, considering the differing responses of soil water content at the upper surface layer to soil evaporation and at the deeper root zone layer to vegetation transpiration. The ESVEP model first diverges the soil-vegetation system net radiation into soil and vegetation components by considering the transmission of direct and diffuse shortwave radiation separately from the transmission of longwave radiation through the canopy, then calculates the four dry/wet soil/vegetation end-members with the diverged soil and vegetation net radiations, and last separates soil evaporation from vegetation transpiration based on the two-phase ET dynamics and the four end-member temperatures. The model can overall produce reasonably good surface energy fluxes and is no more sensitive to meteorology, vegetation, and remote sensing inputs than other two-source energy balance models and surface temperature versus vegetation index ( TR –VI) trapezoid models. A reasonable agreement could be found with a small bias of ±8 W/ \textm^2 and a root-mean-square error within 60 W/ \textm^2 (comparable to accuracies published in other studies) when both model-estimated sensible heat flux and latent heat flux from MODIS remote sensing data are validated with ground-based large aperture scintillometer measurements. Land surface temperatures (LSTs) at high spatial resolution are crucial for hydrological, meteorological, and ecological studies. Downscaling LSTs from coarse resolution to finer resolution is an alternative way to obtain LSTs at high spatial resolution. In this paper, we proposed a new algorithm based on geographically weighted regression (GWR) to downscale Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer LST data from 990 to 90 m. Unlike previous LST downscaling algorithms, this algorithm built the nonstationary relationship between LST and other environmental factors (including the normalized difference vegetation index and a digital elevation model) using geographically varying regression coefficients. The uncertainty in this algorithm was evaluated with a sensitivity analysis. The results show that the total uncertainty in this algorithm is less than 2 K. The performance of the GWR-based algorithm was assessed using concurrent ASTER LST data as a reference LST data set. Moreover, this algorithm was compared against the TsHARP algorithm, which was widely used for LST downscaling. The results indicate that the GWR-based algorithm outperforms the TsHARP algorithm in terms of statistical results. In the distribution management system (DMS), an essential application for the energy efficiency improvement is loss reduction. Loss reduction often involves the control of reactive power (var) resources to optimize the var flow in the network. Traditionally, most available var resources in the distribution network have been switchable shunt capacitor banks. Today distributed energy resources (DER) are becoming another significant var resource due to their increasing penetration, which brings new opportunities as well as challenges for loss reduction. This paper proposes an advanced loss reduction approach to achieve the optimal control coordination among multiple capacitors and DERs. The proposed approach and solution are developed on the basis of the detailed multi-phase distribution network modeling and the state-of-the-art optimization technology. This work also investigates the impact of the DER var control on the loss reduction improvement and voltage violation correction. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated on practical utility distribution circuits with varying degree of unbalance and model complexity. To improve the torque performance limited by the low carrier ratio operation in motor drive system, a master–slave motor drive system based on dual stator winding structure is researched in this article. A high-frequency harmonic current is injected through the auxiliary windings to compensate the torque ripple and dynamic issue caused by the low carrier ratio. The basic operation principle in master–slave motor drive system is presented and then the turn ratio, mutual inductance, and carrier ratio in both windings are studied to achieve the optimization for the torque performance and power loss. The control method aiming at depression on toque ripple and load disturbance is proposed and gets merged with the vector control strategy. The loss analysis considering the injected high-frequency current is presented to compare with the three-phase system in high carrier ratio operation. It is found that a 30% total loss reduction can be achieved under the same torque ripple. The influence of SiO2 and SiNx capping layer on threshold voltage (${V}_{t}$) for FinFET with TiAl-based metal gate (MG) is studied. After metal gate-stack formation, SiNx capping is revealed to be able to serve as a new N source, resulting in the diffusion of N into the effective work function (EWF) TiNx layer. Correspondingly, the accumulation of N in the TiNx layer is demonstrated to be able to lower the EWF for both n- and p-FinFETs. Compared to SiO2 capping, SiNx capping can induce $\sim 100$ –150 mV ${V}_{t}$ lowering for short n- and p-FinFETs. No obvious ${V}_{t}$ shift is found for long-channel devices. Detection of trapped survivors under collapsed buildings using impulse-radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) radar has become an important research topic. However, due to the jitter or drift of the radar, clutter reflected from walls or rubble is similar to the human respiratory response in some scenarios. Thus, it becomes difficult to determine the presence or absence of the survivor under ruins. In this paper, a novel dual-frequency IR-UWB radar with low center frequencies is developed and a method based on adaptive clutter cancellation is proposed to eliminate the respiration-like clutter. Experiments are carried out in both through-wall and simulated rubble cases, and the results shows that the proposed method outperforms the common method, which is based on linear-trend subtraction with single-frequency IR-UWB radar in removing the respiration-like clutter and improves the radar performance in life detection. This correspondence proposes an efficient algorithm for removing Gaussian noise from corrupted image by incorporating a wavelet-based trivariate shrinkage filter with a spatial-based joint bilateral filter. In the wavelet domain, the wavelet coefficients are modeled as trivariate Gaussian distribution, taking into account the statistical dependencies among intrascale wavelet coefficients, and then a trivariate shrinkage filter is derived by using the maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimator. Although wavelet-based methods are efficient in image denoising, they are prone to producing salient artifacts such as low-frequency noise and edge ringing which relate to the structure of the underlying wavelet. On the other hand, most spatial-based algorithms output much higher quality denoising image with less artifacts. However, they are usually too computationally demanding. In order to reduce the computational cost, we develop an efficient joint bilateral filter by using the wavelet denoising result rather than directly processing the noisy image in the spatial domain. This filter could suppress the noise while preserve image details with small computational cost. Extension to color image denoising is also presented. We compare our denoising algorithm with other denoising techniques in terms of PSNR and visual quality. The article discusses the ManySim, a trace-based simulation framework for future large-scale chip multiprocessors (LCMPs) which is composed of tens of potentially multithreaded cores. It analyzes the ManySim framework at length and demonstrate how it gains insight into the bandwidth and cache requirements of future LCMPs designed along different dimensions. It is stated that ManySim is designed to help address the fundamental architecture questions in LCMP. The authors suggest that the design of LCMPs is immense, and capturing every nuance in a single execution-driven simulator running a complex workload may easily lead to unacceptably slow simulation speed.

Data movement (memory copies) is a very commonoperation during network processing and application execution on servers. The performance of this operation is rather poor on today's microprocessors due to the following aspects: 1) Several long-latency memory accesses are involved because the source and/or the destination are typically in memory, 2) latency hiding techniques, such as out-of-order execution, hardware threading, and prefetching, are not very effective for bulk data movement, and 3) microprocessors move data at register (small) granularity. In this paper, we show this overhead of bulk data movement and propose the use of dedicated copy engines to minimize it. We present a detailed analysis of copy engine architectures along two dimensions: 1) on-die versus off-die and 2) synchronous versus asynchronous. These copy engine architectures are superior to traditional Direct Memory Access (DMA) engines because they are tightly coupled to the core architecture and enable lower overhead communication and signaling. We describe the hardware support required to implement these copy engines and integrate them into server platforms. We perform a detailed case study to evaluate the performance of these copy engines. The evaluation is based on an execution-driven simulator, which was extended with detailed models of copy engines. Our simulation results show that copy engines are effective in reducing the bulk data movement overhead and, hence, hold significant promise for high-performance server platforms. The article focuses on the performance of content-aware switch, a network processor-based architecture that can optimize cluster-based server. The advantages of the technology include the guidance of incoming requests on the basis of content type, allows servers to maintain in-cache copies of service results, and dedication of servers to an application type. Though based on application-specific integrated circuits, the switches lack flexibility and programmability due to the moving packets over the peripheral component interconnect bus.

Relative humidity (RH) is one of the key variables for understanding the water, energy, and carbon exchange between the Earth and the atmosphere. Traditional methods for deriving RH from remotely sensed data usually require ground meteorological observations or are limited to clear-sky conditions, thereby making it a significant challenge to obtain spatially complete RH under all-sky conditions, especially over the regions with sparse meteorological instruments for observation. To this end, a new approach for deriving all-sky RH entirely based on Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data was proposed in the present study. Two key assumptions in the approach under cloudy conditions are that the actual water vapor is linearly related to the total precipitable water vapor (PWV) and that air temperature is linearly related to land surface temperature (LST). Results from a total of 30 AmeriFlux stations proved the aforementioned assumptions based on MODIS data collected over a study period of three years from 2009 to 2011. For different aridity conditions, RH retrieval revealed reasonable accuracy with a root-mean-square error (RMSE) of approximately 15.3% over an arid and semiarid region, whereas a comparable RMSE of 17.0% was obtained over a humid area. Further results also indicated that the aforementioned linear relationships were generally temporally stable, thereby indicating that the proposed method can be used to obtain all-sky RH at a regional or global scale entirely based on MOD06_L2-derived LST and MOD05_L2-derived PWV data given that the assumed linear relationships can be easily determined by historical MOD07_L2-derived atmospheric profiles. Accurate estimation of land surface temperature (LST) is crucial for ecological environment monitoring and climate change studies in mountainous areas. The current LST retrieval algorithms were developed without accounting for the topographic effect, which can only be used to retrieve LST over relatively flat surfaces. Due to the impact of 3-D structure of mountainous surfaces, rugged terrain makes the processes of thermal radiation more complex. In this study, a radiative transfer equation (RTE)-based single-channel algorithm was proposed to retrieve LST with topographic effect correction from the Landsat 8 thermal infrared (TIR) data in mountainous areas. This algorithm accounts for the changes in the thermal radiation components in the TIR RTE caused by the topographic effect. According to the analysis of simulation data, sky-view factor (SVF), atmospheric water vapor content, surface emissivity of target pixel, and average LST of the surrounding terrain have significant influence on the magnitude of the topographic effect. The differences between the LST retrieved without/with topographic effect correction from the Landsat 8 TIR data are related to SVF. The topographic effect should be taken into account in the LST retrieval algorithm when SVF is smaller than 0.7. The largest LST difference of approximately 1 K occurs in the deep valley. The results indicate that LST without topographic effect correction could be overestimated to be as high as 1 K. Due to a lack of in situ LST measurements, the performance of the LST retrieval algorithm in mountainous areas was only evaluated by comparing the brightness temperature (BT) at the top of the atmosphere (TOA) simulated by the DART+MODTRAN model and the TIR RTE over mountainous surfaces at three subregions. Numerical simulation of random rough surface finds wide applications in scientific disciplines, e.g., radar remote sensing of terrain and sea. In scattering simulation of rough surface, not only energy conservation must be ensured, but also, perhaps equally important, the surface inherent properties must be preserved. However, the proper choice of surface and grid sizes that are statistically representative poses a problematic issue. This study applied the entropy measure to determine such parameter settings by examining the relative error of sample entropy associated with roughness parameters and by noticing the fact that a rough surface with certain roughness parameters, including power spectrum density function, must have unique sample entropy. It is found that if the two criteria are met, proper choice of surface length and grid size is attainable to warrant minimum uncertainties of rough surfaces and maximum information content for different roughness spectra density functions under different correlation lengths. The feasibility and superiority of the proposed entropy-based method are validated in terms of minimum error of roughness parameters and also the energy conservation in bistatic scattering coefficients of rough surfaces generated using obtained simulation parameters. Net surface shortwave radiation (NSSR) is a key parameter that drives the surface material exchange and energy balance. Herein, we propose an improved artificial neuron network (ANN) with parameterized (ANN-P) method to first calculate the albedo at the top of atmosphere (TOA) by considering the surface non-Lambertian effect. Subsequently, the NSSR is estimated based on the relationship between TOA broadband albedo and the Earth’s surface-absorbed shortwave radiation using a parameterized method under clear sky. The modeling process is implemented with Chinese Gaofen-5 (GF-5) visible/near-infrared channels data simulated via MODTRAN. For comparison, a previously reported lookup table (LUT) with parameterized (LUT-P) method and an ANN method are also employed. The performances of all these methods are evaluated. In terms of model simulation part, the root-mean-square errors (RMSEs) are 15.01 (17.07), 10.04 (13.67), and 20.39 (29.99) W/m2 for land, water, and snow/ice surfaces, respectively, for the ANN-P (versus LUT-P) method. Their mean bias errors (MBEs) are within 0.9 W/m2. With respect to the direct ANN method, it shows the highest accuracy yet relatively large deviation for water surface. Additionally, the sensitivity analysis of water vapor content (WVC) confirms that the ANN-P method is more stable than the LUT-P and ANN methods and is, thereby, recommended for clear-sky NSSR estimation. Finally, the ground validations indicate that the mean RMSEs (MBEs) for the LUT-P, ANN-P, and ANN methods are 49.33 (−3.01), 47.55 (1.75), and 104.24 (−75.72) W/m2, respectively. Land surface temperature (LST) is a key parameter for many fields of study. Currently, LST retrieved from satellite thermal infrared (TIR) measurements is attainable with an accuracy of about 1 K for most natural flat surfaces. However, over urban areas, TIR measurements are influenced by 3-D structures and their radiation that could degrade the performance of existing LST retrieval algorithms. Therefore, quantitative models are needed to investigate such impact. Current 3-D radiative transfer models are generally based on time-consuming numerical integrations whose solutions are not analytical, and are therefore difficult to exploit in the methods of physical retrieval of LST in urban areas. This article proposes an analytical TIR radiative transfer model over urban (ATIMOU) areas that considers the impact of 3-D structures and their radiation. The magnitude of this impact on TIR measurements is investigated in detail, using ATIMOU, under various conditions. Simulations show that failure to acknowledge this impact can potentially introduce a 1.87-K bias to the ground brightness temperature for street canyon whose ratio “wall height/road width” is 2, wall and road temperature is 300 K, wall emissivity is 0.906, and road emissivity is 0.950. This bias reaches 4.60 K if road emissivity decreases to 0.921, and road temperature decreases to 260 K. ATIMOU is also compared to the discrete anisotropic radiative transfer (DART) model. Small mean absolute error of 0.10 K was found between the models regarding the simulated ground brightness temperatures, indicating that ATIMOU is in good agreement with DART. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article attempts to examine the Brewster effect of incoherent scattering from a lossy inhomogeneous rough surface with a vertical dielectric profile. Five typical dielectric profiles are selected for the purpose of illustration. In calculating the reflection coefficients, a transition model is used to convert the angle of incidence to local incidence, which accounts for the surface roughness. Numerical results show that the Brewster angle gradually moves to the large incident angle with an increase in the background dielectric constant and in the surface root-mean-squared (rms) height. The angular dependence of reflection coefficients, both the level and the trend, is slightly affected by the correlation length. The scattering strength is much more sensitive to the rms height than to the correlation length. Different from bidirectional reflectance, temperature variation takes some time with the change of illumination. However, previous thermal radiation directionality (TRD) models have less considered the influence of this temperature inertia (TI) effect. By using the concept of conversion component, this article proposed an improved geometric optical (GO) model, called MGP_TI model. This model considers the TI effect by further dividing the background component into the continuously sunlit, continuously shaded, converted from sunlit to shaded, and converted from shaded to sunlit backgrounds. Upon combining with in situ measurements and a comprehensive simulated data set of component temperatures and prescribing three levels of TI and six observation times, the TI influence on TRD modeling was comprehensively analyzed. Results indicated that: 1) the overall absolute and relative greatest influence were 0.34 °C and 6.9%, respectively, suggesting that the TI influence on the value of TRD was less significant compared with the land surface temperature (LST) retrieval accuracy and the TRD extent; 2) the TI would weaken TRD on the direction of sun motion, whereas it enhanced the TRD on the opposition direction, and the primary influence was enhancing first and then weakening during the period from 10:30 to 15:30, which were determined by the differences in conversion component fractions; and 3) the TI effect could also result in the delay of the hotspot, and the occurrence and degree of the delay were influenced by the TI strength, local solar time and temperature differences of sunlit/shaded components. Microgrid technology has found applications in various areas including institutional campuses, military bases, and remote islands. Many research efforts focus on the development of the microgrid steady-state energy management system (EMS) that can provide the day-ahead schedule or the multi-interval economic dispatch (ED) for distributed energy resources (DERs). This study advances the state-of-the-art microgrid EMS technique by developing a novel EMS approach to achieve a flexible time frame (FTF) DER schedule combined with a single time interval optimal power flow (OPF)-based ED. The FTF DER schedule enables the microgrid to fully utilize the latest updated renewable and load forecasts, and the OPF-based ED integrates realistic microgrid operating constraints in the real-time control. In addition, a mode switching control function is included to re-dispatch DERs in the microgrid for the planned microgrid switching from grid-connected mode to island mode. We describe a method that uses propagation measurements to reconstruct the spatial profiles of the distributed impedance and shunt conductance parameters of a lossy transmission line. From these reconstructed spatial profiles, we can deduce the presence and location of transmission line faults. The method makes use of return loss measurements from both ends of the transmission line as well as the transmission loss between the two ends. An inverse scattering approach based on the Born approximation is utilized to obtain the reconstructions. Its advantage compared to exact formulations, such as those based on the Zakharov–Shabat equations, is that it provides separate analytical expressions for the individual spatial profiles of the distributed impedance and shunt conductance transmission line parameters. It is shown by simulation and experiment that the method performs well in a variety of configurations and has the potential to be used in fault detection for cables and feed networks. Graph neural networks (GNNs) have received much attention as GNNs have recently been successfully applied on non-euclidean data. However, artificially designed graph neural networks often fail to get satisfactory model performance for a given graph data. Graph neural architecture search effectively constructs the GNNs that achieve the expected model performance with the rise of automatic machine learning. The challenge is efficiently and automatically getting the optimal GNN architecture in a vast search space. Existing search methods serially evaluate the GNN architectures, severely limiting system efficiency. To solve these problems, we develop an Automatic Graph Neural Architecture Search framework (Auto-GNAS) with parallel estimation to implement an automatic graph neural search process that requires almost no manual intervention. In Auto-GNAS, we design the search algorithm with multiple genetic searchers. Each searcher can simultaneously use evaluation feedback information, information entropy, and search results from other searchers based on sharing mechanism to improve the search efficiency. As far as we know, this is the first work using parallel computing to improve the system efficiency of graph neural architecture search. According to the experiment on the real datasets, Auto-GNAS obtain competitive model performance and better search efficiency than other search algorithms. Since the parallel estimation ability of Auto-GNAS is independent of search algorithms, we expand different search algorithms based on Auto-GNAS for scalability experiments. We propose the use of subcarrier delay spread based adaptive orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) for communication through wideband waveguide channels. The technique has important communication applications when robots or vehicles are traveling inside waveguide channels such as tunnels or pipes. The delay spread in these mobile wideband waveguide channels varies significantly across subcarriers because propagation occurs in modes whose characteristics change significantly with frequency. Using knowledge of the delay spread in each subcarrier can then be used to adaptively select and avoid subcarriers with delay spread exceeding the cyclic prefix length. With this approach it is possible to create an OFDM system that is more efficient than systems satisfying the delay spread of all subcarriers. In this paper, we therefore propose subcarrier delay spread based adaptive OFDM to enhance the performance of OFDM systems operating in mobile wideband waveguide channels. To identify the delay spread of individual subcarriers we propose two methods. Using these methods, we provide simulation results to demonstrate the effectiveness of the technique. We also make use of experimental waveguide channel measurements to demonstrate the technique in realistic settings. The derivation of microwave land surface emissivity (MLSE) under various weather conditions from the microwave radiometer plays a crucial role in acquiring land surface and atmospheric parameters. Nevertheless, currently, most existing studies mainly focus on the clear-sky scenarios due to a lack of cloudy-sky land surface temperature (LST) and uncertainties in simulating the scattering and emission properties of atmospheric hydrometeors. Under this background, with satellite observations and the random forest (RF) model, this study proposes a method to estimate the MLSE under cloudy skies. First, clear-sky MLSEs with satisfactory accuracy are retrieved by using the brightness temperatures (BTs) from the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer-Earth sensor, LSTs from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), and atmospheric profiles from the ERA5 reanalysis. Then, the relation among the clear-sky MLSE and related impact factors is built with the RF and extended to the cloudy-sky environment for generating all-weather MLSEs with a 0.25°. The results show that the input datasets present a considerable impact on the calculation of instantaneous MLSE, and a 5.73 K bias of ERA5 LST may generate a 0.014–0.021 error in the MLSE from 6.9- to 89-GHz horizontal polarization, while the impacts of BT and profile uncertainties on the MLSE are smaller. The retrieved clear-sky MLSE is coincident with the existing MLSE for the spatiotemporal variations, and there is an average difference range from −0.035 to 0.035 in January 2008. At present, few-shot object detection research in the field of optical remote sensing images has been conducted, but few-shot object detection in the field of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images has rarely been explored. To this end, this article proposes a lightweight metalearning-based SAR image few-shot object detection method, which improves the accuracy and speed of SAR image few-shot object detection from a more balanced perspective. First, we introduce the latest FSODM method in optical remote sensing as a benchmark framework. Second, a lightweight metafeature extractor named DarknetS is designed to enhance the feature representation of SAR images and improve detection timeliness. Furthermore, we build a new aggregation module called AggregationS, which encodes support features and query features into the same feature subspace via a novel transformer encoder. This module design can better extract the correlation and saliency between different classes in the support set, improve the detection accuracy of the query set, and enhance the detection generalization performance of new classes. Finally, we built several real-world SAR image few-shot object detection datasets to verify the effectiveness of the method. Experimental results show that FSODS can achieve a better object detection performance compared to the baseline model under the condition that only a small amount of labeled data is required for new classes of SAR image objects. Multi-label active learning (MAL) aims to learn an accurate multi-label classifier by selecting which examples (or example-label pairs) will be annotated and reducing query effort. MAL is a more complicated and expensive process than single-label active learning, due to one example can be associated with a set of non-exclusive labels and the annotator has to scrutinize the whole example and label space to provide correct annotations. Instead of scrutinizing the whole example for annotation, we may just examine some of its subexamples with respect to a label for annotation. In this way, we can not only save the annotation cost but also speedup the annotation process. Given this observation, we introduce CMAL, a two-stage Cost-effective MAL strategy (CMAL) by querying subexamples. CMAL first selects the most informative example-label pairs by leveraging uncertainty, label correlation and label space sparsity. Specifically, the uncertainty of a label to an example can be reduced if its correlated labels already annotated to the example, and its uncertainty can be reduced also if more examples annotated to this label. Next, CMAL greedily queries the most probable positive subexample-label pairs of the selected example-label pair. In addition, we propose rCMAL to account for the representative of examples to more reliably select example-label pairs in the first stage. Extensive experiments on multi-label datasets from diverse domains show that our proposed CMAL and rCMAL can better save the query cost than state-of-the-art MAL methods. Accurate retrieval of land surface temperature (LST) over urban areas is of great significance for urban thermal environment monitoring. In previous studies, most of the urban LST retrieval methods were developed based on the assumption of a flat surface without considering the influence of urban 3-D geometry structure, which has a significant impact on the retrieval accuracy of LST over urban areas. In this study, a radiative transfer equation (RTE)-based single-channel method was developed to retrieve LST with urban geometry effect correction from the Landsat 8 thermal infrared (TIR) data in band 10. The increase in adjacent radiance from the surrounding pixels and the decrease in atmospheric downwelling radiance caused by urban geometry structure were taken into account in this method. Because it is difficult to directly validate the retrieval accuracy of LST over urban areas using in situ LST measurements, the performance of the RTE-based LST retrieval method was evaluated via comparing brightness temperature (BT) at the top of the atmosphere (TOA) simulated by the discrete anisotropic radiative transfer (DART) model and the urban RTE over three subregions. There is a good agreement between BT at the TOA simulated by the DART model and the urban RTE, with a root-mean-squared error (RMSE) of less than 0.25 K. The variations in LST retrieved with urban geometry effect correction over different local climate zones (LCZs) were analyzed. In general, built-up LCZs have relatively higher LST than land cover LCZs. The differences between LST retrieved without/with urban geometry effect correction over different LCZs are greater than 0.2 K. The largest average LST difference over built-up LCZs is approximately 0.9 K, whereas that over land cover LCZs is approximately 0.65 K. LST retrieved without/with urban geometry effect correction was used to calculate urban heat island intensity (UHII) in terms of the LCZ-based method. The results indicate that UHII calculated from LST with urban geometry effect correction is lower than that calculated from LST without urban geometry effect correction, with an average difference of approximately 0.5 K. This article presents a new index, polarization-conversion ratio (PCR) to characterize depolarized bistatic scattering from rough surfaces with dielectric inhomogeneity and spatial anisotropy. We then investigate the dependence of PCR on both surface and radar parameters. Numerical results show that the distribution of PCR on the scattering plane varies with the polarization state of the incident wave and incident angle. The PCR clusters more in the cross-plane for horizontally polarized incidence. However, for vertically polarized incidence, the PCR disperses as “triangular shape” on the whole scattering plane with a sharp valley occurring in the incident plane. The following points can be drawn: 1) the inhomogeneity effectively enhances the PCR in the cross-plane; 2) the effect of anisotropy on the PCR is relatively weak, because the scattering is less affected by correlation length; 3) the impacts of surface rms height on the PCR are negative on the whole scattering plane; and 4) as the background permittivity increases, at the horizontally polarized incidence, the PCR is enhanced in the backward and forward regions, while at vertically polarized incidence, it is enhanced in the incident plane and the forward region. As is demonstrated, the PCR is an effective measure of the sensitivity of depolarization, making it potentially useful as a new reliable index for surface parameter inversion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Evapotranspiration (ET) is one of the most critical parameters in water- and energy-related domains. Two basic assumptions with respect to soil-moisture variation have been widely investigated for the retrieval of ET based on the trapezoid methods. Specifically, soil moisture within the surface and root-zone layers was assumed to vary synchronously in most of the earlier analyses. However, several recent investigations assumed that soil moisture within the upper soil layer should be dried up before the root-zone layer is stressed. To this end, the retrieval of ET under different aridity conditions over North American grasslands was investigated with the two assumptions, and the estimated ET was assessed using the flux data collected from eight AmeriFlux sites. Based on the available data from 2002 to 2018, results showed that the “asynchronous-assumed” method can obtain better ET estimates than the “synchronous-assumed” method over semiarid and subhumid areas, whereas the “synchronous-assumed” method can obtain better ET estimates in humid areas. Moreover, because of the different closure techniques used for the ET correction, no consistent conclusions could be found for the arid conditions to determine which trapezoid was better. Specifically, it was found that the cases of surface soil with zero water availability that were defined by the asynchronous-assumed trapezoid method rarely occur, even in arid areas, which indicated that the critical boundary that determines whether the root-zone layer begins to be water-stressed may need to be redefined. In this paper, we characterize usage and problems for Web applications, evaluate their reliability, and examine the potential for reliability improvement. Based on the characteristics of Web applications and the overall Web environment, we classify Web problems and focus on the subset of source content problems. Using information about Web accesses, we derive various measurements that can characterize Web site workload at different levels of granularity and from different perspectives. These workload measurements, together with failure information extracted from recorded errors, are used to evaluate the operational reliability for source contents at a given Web site and the potential for reliability improvement. Constant on-time control has been widely used due to its advantages of fast transient response and light load efficiency. However, the control scheme is intrinsically unstable if the output capacitor's equivalent series resistance (ESR) is not large enough, which needs ripple injection techniques to enhance loop stability. The traditional passive ripple compensation technique uses only passive component networks to realize this function, which exhibits some inherent shortcomings, including difficulties in high-speed current sensing amplifier design and large chip area consumption. This paper proposes an internal active ripple compensation strategy that senses the low-side power mosfet current and extracts relevant ac information for feedback-ripple enhancement. Output-voltage dc offset does not occur and subharmonic instability is significantly improved even with ceramic capacitors. The circuit architecture has been realized in a synchronous buck regulator with a 0.5 μm 40 V bipolar-CMOS-DMOS (BCD) process. Transverse magnetic field (TMF) contacts can prevent local overheat by creating a TMF and driving the vacuum arc to rotate around the contact periphery, thus improving the breaking performance of vacuum circuit breaker. The arcing behavior and the transition between arcing stages have great influence on the heat distribution on the contact surfaces, and they will finally affect the interruption at current zero. In this paper, a demountable vacuum chamber was used to investigate the arc behavior between two kinds of TMF contacts. A digital high-speed camera was used to record the arcing process. By combining the arcing appearance with arc voltage waveform, the arcing process was divided into four stages: initial expansion stage, arc instability stage, arc motion stage, and diffuse stage. The voltage characteristic and arc appearance of each stage were summarized and analyzed, and the transition condition between different stages was acquired. Moreover, the influence of current level and contact parameters on the duration and transition moment of each stage was also studied. The experimental results indicate that the initial stage is influenced by the arc ignition mode, whereas the arc motion and diffuse stage are significantly affected by the current level, contact type, and diameters. With the increase of peak current level, the duration of arc motion stage will increase, while the transition moment from arc motion to diffuse stage will move toward current zero.
