Abstract

GaN High Electron Mobility Transistors (HEMTs) are very promising for radiofrequency applications and especially RADAR operation due to their ability to work at high power densities. However, parasitic effects like traps are a common issue on this type of technology. They have to be properly characterized in order to be compensated. Several measurement methods exists like DLTS or DLOS, mostly consisting in a measurement of a current transient at different junction temperatures. This paper presents a comparison between different extraction algorithms for trapping signatures and the possible impact of their imprecision when extracting the activation energy on measurement data. Furthermore, a more physical model for trap extraction will be presented with its limitations.

Abstract

International audience; We present some results on the uniform exponential stability of singularly perturbed linear systems undergoing switching. In absence of dwell-time constraints, the switching parameter can evolve on the same time scale as the fast variables, or even faster. We investigate the effect of switching laws evolving at a time scale comparable with the fast variables, describing the corresponding asymptotic effect on the slow variable. Based on this analysis, we propose stability criteria for the overall system, uniform for small values of the parameter of singular perturbation.

Abstract

International audience; Based on the projector introduced in recent Euler semi-implicit methods, the main contribution of this paper is the reduction of the effect of noise on the sliding surface of the discretized homogeneous differentiator. For that, an adaptation law according to the magnitude of the high frequency noise is proposed to modify the behavior of the projector when the discretized differentiator remains on the sliding surface. In presence of noise, the differentiator will have an asymptotic convergence but will be less-sensing noise. Otherwise, when the differentiator is not affected by noise on the sliding surface, its convergence will be in finite-time. Experimental results are shown in order to highlight the well founded of the contribution.

Abstract

International audience; Swarm engineering is a systematic application of scientific and technical knowledge to specify requirements, model, design, realize, verify, validate, operate and maintain a swarm intelligence system. In swarm robotics, there is not a well-structured methodology until today for developing robotic swarm systems. Several researchers have developed steps to design swarm robots but these steps are still incomplete. In this paper, we focus on the functional architecture of the swarm robots where we propose a top-down approach to ensure consistency and continuity from requirement level to behavioral level up to the functional and structural levels. This approach is based on the Model-Based Systems Engineering method (MBSE) using the Systems Modeling Language (SysML) where we present the allocations between the functions of each swarm member and the overall swarm behaviors. Then, we will be interested in the architecture of Robot Operating System (ROS) of a swarm behavior where we identify the allocations between the component and the functions of a robot.

Abstract

The growing penetration of mechanical engineering through information technology has led to considerable advantages. The resulting discipline that expresses the tight integration of mechanics, electronics, control and software engineering is called mechatronics. Therefore, designing mechatronic systems is a complex as well as an interdisciplinary task. Added to that, developing a new mechatronic product takes a lot of time due to the iterative exchange loops between the designers, the manufacturing engineers and other specialists, which subsequently increase the development cost. Hence, continuous and effective communication and cooperation between developers from various fields during the entire development process is necessary. In this context, we propose an approach based on the integration of the set-based concurrent engineering principles with the system engineering methodology for the design of complex mechatronic systems, taking into consideration the production system constraints in the early design stages. The goal of this approach is to reduce the iterative exchange loops between different participants, which in turn minimize the cost and time required to develop a mechatronic product.

Abstract

Designing mechatronic systems implies collaborative work with shared parameters between contributors from different domains. Moreover, each domain needs to capitalize knowledge (e.g. design rules) in order not to reinvent specific calculation or simulation processes. In this paper, it is explained how students have been implied in a collaborative design project dealing with an aeronautic actuator, namely an EMA (ElectroMechanical Actuator) for aileron actuation. Comparing three candidate kinematic architectures regarding the initial set of requirements, the project articulates modeling and simulation with Modelica language, the selection of relevant COTS components and their integration into a 3D mock-up within a wing and aileron assembly. In order to share relevant system and components parameters between design activities, KARREN tool is evaluated and configured for this project thanks to a preliminary systems engineering study to minimize the number of needed iterations to eventually converge on appropriate architectural solutions and their evaluation and comparison.

Abstract

In the upstream design stage, designers with narrow knowledge of design for performance (DFP) and design for quality (DFQ) produce a rough part design with arbitrary geometry. This leads to iterative exchange loops between design participants in the early design stage and generates additional cost every time there is a modification. To overcome this issue, the integration of a system engineering approach hinged on set based concurrent engineering principles will reduce the exchange loops between engineers and optimize the use of time and resources. This approach is based on information flows: The upstream flow represents the exchange of information issued from system engineer to the different specialists, while the downstream flow serves as a feedback from the specialists to help system engineer in trade- off analysis. In this paper, a novel approach based on exchange flows is used to reduce the exchange loops between engineers. In the context of design for performance, system’s constraints are introduced as key value attributes to evaluate trade-offs and to choose the best system architecture. Then, for each solution of the design space, the clustering phase is done through a developed algorithm to eliminate unfeasiule or costly solutions using filters like lead-time, production cost, quality, reliability and performance. Finally, a trade-off analysis is done to compare the reduced set of solutions. A case study concerning an electronic throttle body will be posed to illustrate various stages of this concurrent engineering approach.

Abstract

In the animal kingdom, many mammals are using their tails to assure their stability while running, jumping, falling, etc. Researches have been performed in order to add tails on wheeled or legged robots in order to improve their stability. However, those tails are often far from the biological structure and resumed to a simple rigid tube with a mass on the extremity. On the other hand the biological tail is composed of many bones moving one on the other and actuated with an important number of muscles. Therefore replicating this structure would result in big and heavy systems using many actuators that would reduce the physical performances of the robot. In this paper, we developed a new bio-inspired cable-driven tail system capable of swinging a flexible tail from base to tip around the pitching axis using a single actuator. First we designed a new flexible tail mimicking the structure of the animal tail. Then we developed a new actuation system using the combination of cams and drive wheels to realize the actuation of 8 cables using a single actuator. Finally, we measured the efforts generated by the swinging motion of the tail and perform experiments to observe its effects on the jumping motion.

Abstract

In this paper, we study the integrated scenarios of formation tracking, collision avoidance and obstacle avoidance of multiple unmanned underwater vehicles (UUV). It is assumed that the communication graph is directed and connected. The desired formation shape that is created is maintained and follow the trajectory by the consensus algorithm while the potential function is addressed for a collision avoidance. During following the trajectory, the Bezier curve is used for make a new trajectory to avoid obstacles. The effectiveness of the scenario is verified by a numerical simulation.

Abstract

This paper treats a drone delivery parcel's problematic in an urban area. The civil application of drone has been developed during these last decades especially drone delivery applications. In this paper, we focus on drone delivery application in the urban area for last-mile parcel delivery. The new issue is not only the drone design but also the logistics support of a massive fleet of drones with a mission to deliver parcels in a dense urban area. We hereby treat problematic by focusing on Logistics Support System. In this context, the commercialized drone is a considered as a system on the shelf. we propose a Post-Production Logistics Support Analysis to cover the exploitation phase of a drone delivery operator.

Abstract

International audience; The present paper focuses on wireless energy transfer mechanisms applied to urban electric vehicles. It describes the using conditions of a particular transformer without ferromagnetic core, supplied by a resonant inverter and loaded by mobile sources (catenaries with magnetic induction to power electric vehicles). The system consists of unconventional transformers with large air-gaps and a generator who supplies the transformer. The paper describes the theoretical model used for the numerical simulation (magnetic circuit, power converter, loads), and the measurements provided by our experimental platform (Tesla lab.). The transformer is supplied by a half-bridge series resonant converter. The transformer secondary coil is mobile compared to the primary, which is fixed on the road. This system is found in many industrial applications such as light automatic vehicles, tramways, etc. In this work we will show that the performance of a transformer without magnetic circuit can be equivalent to a standard transformer.

Abstract

The paper presents an original approach combining both testing and numerical modeling to analyze the dynamic behavior of on-shore wind turbines under vibration stress. In the first section, experimental tests are performed to examine the structural response of the three main components of the turbine (blades, tower, and nacelle). Afterward, a robust 3-D Finite Volume model is developed using ANSYS for free and forced constraints calculation. The purpose of the developed tool is to model and interpret reliably the transient and static operational modes. The model is then validated using the Experimental Modal Analysis Method (EMAM). Thus, after setting the boundary conditions and the mesh elements size, the modal parameters were optimized to adjust the model. An excellent correlation between «calculations» and «measures» is obtained. The analysis is developed by the help of a powerful computer capable to execute many modes and present the distribution of equivalent stress for each mode. Hence, the vibrational comportments of the blades, the nacelle and the tower are analyzed.

Abstract

International audience; This paper aims to present a methodology that helps improving systems modelling by using Process Integration and Design Optimization technologies. Then, the methodology has been applied on an automotive case study: the improvement of the hybrid vehicle TOYOTA PRIUS III modelling. This work has been carried out in the context of the international research program PLACIS (PLAteforme Collaborative d'Ingénierie Système). It is the result of the collaboration between Institut Polytechnique Grand Paris and Esslingen University. The experimental data needed for the study were measured on a test bench and a detailed model developed in DYMOLA-MODELICA environment of the vehicle powertrain was given by the company Bosch. Thereby, in order to develop and validate the model, an optimization tool was used to identify the unknown parameters of the system and integrate the energy data management into the simulation.

International audience; This paper deals with the need for changes in the way to teach mechatronic engineering design, in order to take into account the increasing development of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS). After discussing the similarities and differences cited by the scientific community, we present our ongoing educational process to extend the mechatronic system design with the constraints of systems in a CPS context. This project-based approach is detailed with an educational case study consisting in a cleaning robots colony.

Abstract

International audience; Nowadays man-made systems are getting more complex including new technologies and components from different domains. In addition, they are used in many safety critical missions. This induces new challenges in the design of such systems as new methods and tools are needed to manage the complexity while taking into account safety aspects. To face these challenges, the use of model-based approaches such as MBSE is compulsory. In addition, only an efficient integration of safety concerns early in the design process guarantees an optimal design avoiding late and costly changes. Our proposal is an integrated methodology named SafeSysE, including both MBSE and MBSA processes. SafeSysE narrows the gap between the design and safety analyses since it allows to assist the safety expert in generating the safety artifacts such as FMEA and FTA from the system models. It enhances the consistency between the system model including the requirements, structure and behavior of the system in one side and the safety artifacts in the other side.

Abstract

In an increasingly volatile, globalized, and demanding market, Lean is the differential factor that could increase companies' competitiveness and efficiency. In spite of the abundant literature addressing Lean system's technical aspects, there has been little discussion on the importance of national culture in Lean's implementation process. It has been proven that the implementation of lean practices do not always produce the intended results and national culture has been highlighted as one of the contextual variables that may explain the success or failure of Lean practices. Since companies are influenced by the culture of the country where they're located, some comparative advantages may occur due to their location, making it necessary to adjust Lean's implementation process to national culture. The purpose of this article is to propose a literature review to examine the relationship between national culture and Lean Management. This study explores the assertions and/or contradictions found in the literature regarding the cultural dimensions that may act as enablers or withholders to the lean principles and practices.

Abstract

International audience; —The conceptual design is a decisive phase where the simulation teams would like to quickly pre-validate spatial architectures from the physical architecture proposed by the system architects. In order to support them to efficiently achieve this task while meeting various industrial requirements, three approaches were proposed and compared, and finally the last and innovative approach called SAMOS (Spatial Architecture based on Multi-physics and Organization of Systems) is presented and described. The corresponding platform will allow to validate the spatial allocation of components under geometrical and multi-physical constraints, while facilitating the collaboration between the different design actors during the conceptual design.
