A new phase-matching factor is derived for four-wave mixing (FWM) that includes the effects of self-phase and cross-phase modulation in optical fibers. Theoretical results predict that the wavelength of peak FWM efficiency shifts away from the fiber zero-dispersion wavelength and indicate that the conventional phase-matching factor may induce significant errors in FWM calculations. Experiments are presented to verify the new phase-matching factor and the related theoretical results. We perform a systematic measurement of the degree-of-polarization (DOP) and eye-closure penalty for optical signals with orthogonal polarizations. We find that the symmetry of DOP is maintained for the orthogonal polarizations under both first and higher order polarization-mode dispersion (PMD), whereas the symmetry of eye-closure penalty is broken under second-order PMD. An orthogonal polarization pair can have large disparity of eye-closure penalty despite an identical DOP. A 10-Gb/s subcarrier multiplexing long-haul optical system is reported. 4×2.5 Gb/s data streams are combined into one wavelength, which occupies a 20-GHz optical bandwidth. Optical single sideband is used to increase bandwidth efficiency and reduce dispersion penalty. The receiver sensitivity is calculated using a simplified receiver model with an optical preamplifier. In optical transmission systems and networks with in-line optical amplifiers, system performance degradations caused by random noise and optical path distortions are usually thought to be inseparable, which makes link performance evaluation complicated. We propose to use an optical system eye-mask parameterization technique to separate noise from distortion in the link budgeting.
