Abstract

Nowadays wireless standards optimize their capacity thanks to techniques such as advanced Forward Error Correction (FEC) technologies like Low-Density Parity-Check and Turbo codes. Smartphone and Home automation are specific use cases where multi-standard architectures show great interest. Furthermore some standardized FEC can be interpreted as trellis codes. Trellis-based iterative algorithms are competitive to decode several codes. The goal detailed in this paper is to provide a multistandard decoder applied on 3GPP-LTE and IEEE802.11n codes. A state of the art of main decoding algorithms and on the selected codes is necessary to underline the decoding similarities and to design a trellis construction. An optimized trellis decoder followed by a common architecture are then studied and compared with existing solutions in term of performance, complexity and throughputs. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

22. Adaptive Noise Mitigation in Impulsive Environment: Application to Power-Line Communications.

Abstract

In this paper, we address the general issue of asynchronous impulsive noise mitigation and its application over coded power-line communications (PLC). As is well known, PLC channels usually suffer from significant degradation due to impulsive interference generated by electrical appliances. The use of a level limiter is a simple and intuitive technique, widely used to mitigate the noxious effect of impulsive noise in these channels. However, the determination of the clipping threshold remains, most of the time, empirical, and the impulse statistics are usually assumed to be known. In a previous study, we proposed an original threshold determination based on signal detection theory, using the well-known false alarm and good detection tradeoff. Here, we further investigate the proposed optimization method in closed form. We compare two tradeoff criteria by means of a receiver operating curves analysis. We clearly show that the resulting decision fits well with encountered bit-error rate performances. We also evaluate the influence of impulsive noise statistics estimation on the performance of the proposed approach. To do so, we assess the robustness of the classical method of moments on Gaussian mixture estimation. It clearly appears that the estimation method is reliable for reasonable values of the impulse occurrence. As one of the main results of this paper, we make a proposal for impulse statistics estimation under "severe" conditions (i.e., for very rare impulse events, based on impulse detection over corrupted OFDM symbols). Subsequently, we propose a general scheme of automatic impulse mitigation, according to the disturbance ratio of the environment. Abstract

For decades, the de facto standard for forward error correction was a convolutional code decoded with the viterbi algorithm, often concatenated with another code (e.g., a Reed-Solomon code). But since the introduction of turbo codes in 1993, much more powerful codes referred to collectively as turbo and turbo-like codes have eclipsed classical methods. These powerful error-correcting techniques achieve excellent error-rate performance that can closely approach Shannon's channel capacity limit. The lure of these large coding gains has resulted in their incorporation into a widening array of telecommunications standards and systems. This paper will briefly characterize turbo and turbo-like codes, examine their implications for physical layer system design, and discuss standards and systems where they are being used. The emphasis will be on telecommunications applications, particularly wireless, though others are mentioned. Some thoughts on the use of turbo and turbo-like codes in the future will also be given. Abstract

In this letter, we investigate the design of adaptive space-time codes that exploit partial transmitter channel state information (CSI). We introduce the adaptive space-time parsing paradigm as a generalization of the transmitter selection-diversity approach. We then use this new framework to construct full-diversity adaptive space-time codes for delay-limited applications with fixed-rate transmission.
