A new generation of Contactless Smartcard Chip is described. The Contactless Smartcard Chip integrates an on-chip coil connected to a power reception system and an emitter/receiver module compatible with the ISO 14443 standard, together with an asynchronous Quasi Delay Insensitive (QDI) 8-bit micro-controller. Beyond the contactless smartcard application field, this new chip demonstrates that System-on-Chip integrating power reception and management, radio-frequency communication and signal processing are feasible. The chip associates analog/digital parts as well as synchronous/asynchronous logics and has been fabricated in a CMOS 6 metal layers .25µm technology from STMicroelectronics.

International audience; Our goal is to automatically identify faces in TV broadcast without a pre-defined dictionary of identities. Most methods are based on identity detection (from OCR and ASR) and require a propagation strategy based on visual clustering. In TV content, people appear with many variations making the clustering difficult. In this case, speaker clustering can be a reliable link for face clustering. Multi-modal clustering methods assume a bipartite mapping between modalities. In this paper, we propose to build automatically an incomplete speaker-face mapping based on local evidence of OCR and Lip activity links. Then, we propose schemes of speaker constraints propagation to the face constrained-clustering problem. Experiments performed on the REPERE corpus show an improvement of face identification by propagating names to face clusters (+3.7% F-measure compared to the baseline).

Abstract

In this paper, an uniplanar log-periodic antenna with a perpendicular plane reflector dedicated to a radio wave camera system is presented. The performance of this antenna are investigated over a wide frequency range, comparing between measured and simulated results. The measured return loss of the antenna exhibits a wideband performance between 1.5 and 4GHz (@VSWR=2). The proposed antenna has a good symmetrical radiation pattern in the E- and H-planes. This antenna configuration is suitable particularly for broadband phased antenna arrays where active circuits are integrated on the feed substrate. The developed antenna will be exploited in a future context of an ultra wideband antenna array, with performances in radiation independent from frequency, for a radio wave camera system.

Abstract

WOS:000367739000075 (Nº de Acesso Web of Science) The design of a micromachined polyethylene lens for WiGig modules is described and its electromagnetic characteristics are measured. The lens is electromagnetically fed by linearly polarized Tx and Rx patch antennas integrated in an existing ball-grid-array (BGA) organic module. Antennas are separated from each other by a distance of 4.45 mm (0.89lambda at 60 GHz). The goal of the lens is to increase the gain of each antenna while lowering the beam depointing effect due to their offset position regarding the focal point of the lens. A geometrical optics/physical optics (GO/PO) hybrid method is applied to the design and analysis of the lens shape for noncollimating purpose. Using a lens height of 30 mm for both Tx and Rx antennas, a 13-dBi minimum realized gain from 54 to 66 GHz is obtained. Compared to an elliptical lens providing an equivalent realized gain over the same bandwidth, the depointing angle from the boresight direction is reduced from 15° to 4°. Full-wave simulations are verified by measurements.

Abstract

Real-life ants use pheromone trails to guide themselves back and forth from food, without the help of a map. In this paper, we introduce a new protocol for wireless networks, called Time Reversal for Ant Trails (TRAT) which mimics ants by using electromagnetic virtual beacons generated by Time Reversal focusing instead of pheromones. Simulations show that for a given trajectory, the performance of the proposed scheme increases with the number of transmit antennas at the network side, with the precision of the scanning, and decreases with inter-beacon spacing and the carrier frequency.

Abstract

International audience; The IEEE 802.11v defines the Directed Multicast Service (DMS) in order to enhance the reliability of the multicast transport. This service converts multicast traffic into several unicast streams. Therefore DMS can be used to serve a limited number of receivers. In this paper, we show that using DMS, losses caused by queue rejections may exceed the packet loss rate of the legacy multicast. To resolve the limited scalability of DMS, we define a new scalable version called S-DMS. This version is appropriate for layered streams like H264/SVC and is able to avoid queue overflows. S-DMS delivers the base layer of a video traffic using DMS and transmits the enhancement layer using either DMS or the legacy multicast, depending on the available bandwidth. We show that S-DMS is able to increase considerably the number of admitted multicast members.

Abstract

Research Session 3 - Application Modeling and Management; International audience; The ability to react quickly to unpredictable changes in the environment is a key requirement in pervasive computing. This paper presents fANFARE, a framework for the autonomic management of service-oriented applications in pervasive environments. Specifically, it focuses on the configuration and optimization of pervasive applications deployed on OSGi platforms. We propose to handle runtime administration through a hierarchy of autonomic managers, that is a platform manager and a number of application managers and dependency managers. Our approach has been implemented and validated on pervasive use cases within the MEDICAL project funded by the French Ministry of Industry.

Abstract

International audience; One of the major issues experienced by the IEEE 802.11 standard is the fair sharing of the channel between unicast and multicast flows. This problem is obviously caused by the use of the smallest Contention Window size to transmit the multicast packets compared to an exponentially incremented size for every unicast packet transmission retry. This pattern is due mainly to the reliability degree difference between the unicast and the multicast traffic. Currently, the unicast uses feedbacks to provide reliability, whereas the multicast does not rely on such a mechanism and is therefore considered as unreliable. In this paper we propose a reliable Multicast flow transport proposal called the Reliable PLCP-based Multicast Protocol (RPMP) and we study its impact on the fair channel sharing with unicast flows in high-load conditions. We show that RPMP solves the issues of the legacy multicast.

Abstract

In this paper we present our approach to cope with platforms' heterogeneity of the home network. Traditional resource reservation policies, based on a mapping table, associate one Quantity of Resource (QoR) to one platform resulting in large table size. To reduce this size, we propose to use aggregated mapping tables to associate one aggregated QoR to several platforms. This reduction facilitates resources management for multimedia applications in home networks. This paper presents the aggregation algorithm which automatically builds aggregated mapping tables, with input criteria given by content providers. The algorithm uses clustering coupled with domain knowledge. It is evaluated with randomly generated mapping tables.

Abstract

Multi-user interference is a major issue for non coherent ultra wide band impluse radio (UWB-IR)systems, since the commonly used energy integration prevents from distinguish useful and spurious impulses in teh received signal. We propose a short integration based and multipath capable non coherent receiver, relying on a comparator. The decisions taken on the multipaths are combined and weighted by their reliability. Under interference situations, the coeffecient of the interfered paths are updated to marginalize their impact in the combination process. Simulations show the relevance of such a proposition and also exhibit that a simple elimination of the interfered paths can provide satisfactory performance.

Abstract

IETF ROLL has recently proposed gradient routing as a fundamental building block for data collection in Wireless Sensor Networks. This paper seconds this choice by presenting an implementation of gradient routing on current hardware, and by showing experimentally that gradient routing is robust against topological changes. To stress its self-healing quality, we design and implement a complete communication stack in which neighbor tables are built in a purely reactive fashion. We quantify the resulting topological changes, and show how gradient routing elegantly handles these dynamics. This paper presents, to the best of our knowledge, the first experimental study on gradient routing as advocated by IETF ROLL.

Abstract

International audience; We study the network spectral efficiency of decentralized vector multiple access channels (MACs) when the number of accessible dimensions per transmitter is strategically limited. Considering each dimension as a frequency band, we call this limiting process bandwidth limiting (BL). Assuming that each transmitter maximizes its own data rate by water-filling over the available frequency bands, we consider two scenarios. In the first scenario, transmitters use non-intersecting sets of bands (spectral resource partition), and in the second one, they freely exploit all the available frequency bands (spectral resource sharing). In the latter case, successive interference cancelation (SIC) is used. We show the existence of an optimal number of dimensions that a transmitter must use in order to maximize the network performance measured in terms of spectral efficiency. We provide a closed form expression for the optimal number of accessible bands in the first scenario. Such an optimum point, depends on the number of active transmitters, the number of available frequency bands and the different signal-to-noise ratios. In the second scenario, we show that BL does not bring a significant improvement on the network spectral efficiency, when all transmitters use the same BL policy. For both scenarios, we provide simulation results to validate our conclusions.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper we propose the following approach to the dimensioning of the radio part of the downlink in OFDMA networks. First, we use information theory to characterize the bit-rate in the channel from a base station to its mobile. It depends on the power and bandwidth allocated to this mobile. Then, we describe the resource (power and bandwidth) allocation problem and characterise feasible configurations of bit-rates of all users. As the key element, we propose some particular sufficient condition (in a multi-Erlang form) for a given configuration of bit-rates to be feasible. Finally, we consider an Erlang's loss model, in which streaming arrivals whose admission would lead to the violation of this sufficient condition are blocked and lost. In this model, the blocking probabilities can be calculated using Kaufman-Roberts algorithm. We propose it to evaluate the minimal density of base stations assuring acceptable blocking probabilities for a streaming traffic of a given load per surface unit. We validate this approach by comparison of the blocking probabilities to these simulated in the similar model in which the admission control is based on the original feasibility property (instead of its sufficient condition). Our sufficient bit-rate feasibility condition can also be used to dimension the network with respect to the elastic traffic.

International audience; More and more wireless access networks based on WLANs e.g. IEEE 802.11 are publicly deployed in multiple environments such as airports, depots, shopping centers, etc. Efficient authentication mechanisms are required to ensure a robust control of network access and secure user exchanges. The evolution of mobile devices, wireless access technologies and user behaviors lead to an increasing demand of seamless mobility support. Thus, authentication mechanisms must support seamless handover across network cells. In previous work, we have proposed a fast re-authentication method based on proactive key distribution: PKD with IAPP caching. This method proposes a very interesting handover delay reduction but it does not comply with the IEEE 802.11i security requirements. In this paper, we propose a ticket-based enhancement to go beyond the security weakness of the PKD with IAPP caching re-authentication method. A functional description of the security enhancement is given in addition to a security evaluation.

Abstract

International audience; Crosstalk is the major source of performance limitation in the current short range DSL systems. Coordination between users in the downstream and in the upstream directions has been recently proposed in order to overcome the effects of FEXT in DSL transmissions. In this paper, we study a new low complexity precompensation solution for FEXT reduction for such systems. It is compared to the ideal precompensation technique as well as to a simplified existing solution based on Jacobi development. The proposed precompensation technique presents the same complexity but has better performance than the Jacobi based precompensation solution. The obtained performance is closer to the optimal data rates resulting from a perfect FEXT precompensation.

Abstract

International audience; Requirements documentation is a collection of partial specifications produced by different stakeholders. Obtaining a global specification is a fundamental step of a requirement analysis process. Merging requirement specifications is indeed a way to reveal inconsistencies between them. We propose in this paper a model-driven mechanism for that purpose. It takes as inputs a set of texts or models which conform to input requirement languages and produces a global requirements model. This mechanism is integrated in a platform called R2A which stands for ?requirements to analysis?. The R2A core element is its core requirement metamodel which has been defined for capturing the global requirements model. We illustrate our approach with requirement specifications expressed in a constrained natural language. This platform and its mechanism have been completely implemented with MDE (Model Driven Engineering) technologies. As such, it is a good example of how MDE technologies can contribute to requirements engineering as a technical solution.

Abstract

International audience; More and more research have been developed very recently for automatic hand recognition. This paper proposes a new method for contactless hand authentication in complex images with low cost devices. Our system uses skin color and hand shape information for hand detection process. Next, the palm is extracted and characterized by a bank of Gabor filters. Finally, the palm features are compared with a distribution estimation given an optimal discrimination. The experimental results present an error rate lower than 1.7% with a population of 49 people.

International audience; The deployment of wireless local area networks (WLANs) has recently gained in popularity with roll-out densities often reaching saturation levels. The frequency bands designated to WLANs do thus not suffice anymore to provide non-overlapping, and hence interference-free, communication. Prior research has therefore been dedicated to a wide variety of mainly cochannel interference mitigation techniques. Our contribution lies in the performance analysis of the more realistic case of spatially close WLAN systems interfering asynchronously in DSSS mode and on adjacent channels. The authors expose the performance of optimum and sub-optimum multiuser detection maximum likelihood sequence estimators (MUD-MLSEs) under varying conditions, e.g. level of interference, degree of spectral overlap, etc. This facilitates a better understanding and design of future interference-limited WLAN systems. The performance results are also important to spectrum policy makers, allowing to knowledgeably estimate the degree of tolerated interference in license exempt bands.

International audience; Time reversal is a promising technique for the improvement of future telecommunication systems. It may increase throughput while reducing receiver complexity. A better understanding of this capability requires more investigation on measured channels. This study used circular array propagation measurements. These measurements are efficient to estimate space-time focusing characteristics simultaneously. Because the delay spread parameter is inappropriate, a new parameter is introduced to study time focusing. Focusing parameters of two time reversal schemes are investigated. Time reversal improves the data rate by a factor of three and increases the received power using the entire FCC bandwidth. The one-bit time reversal scheme improves space focusing but provides smaller gain on other focusing parameters. The trend is the same with smaller bandwidth, but the benefits are reduced. The optimal bandwidth should be close to 3 GHz.

Abstract

International audience; This paper assesses the efficiency of a multi standard and multi antenna receiver using simulation and test measurements in a real propagation environment. A multi-standard and multi-antenna receiver is firstly designed with the ADS© software. Secondly, the performance of this system is evaluated with several multi-antenna algorithms, under real radio propagation conditions depending on the standard we choose to deal with. At this time the receiver can run with 802.11b and 802.11g standards in a 36 MHz bandwidth. Some first results are presented using multi antenna algorithm in a receiver dealing with two 802.11g or 802.11b transmission on overlapped communication channels.

Abstract

In this paper we focus on two multicarrier modulation schemes based either on offset-QAM (OFDM/OQAM) or on oversampled OFDM. Both modulations permit the introduction of an appropriate pulse shaping for transmission over time- varying multipath channels. As for any multicarrier modulation, these pulse-shaped systems may be also subject to large peak- to-average power ratios (PAPR). An adaptation of the selective mapping (SLM) technique, already used for OFDM, is proposed. This new version of a technique named overlapped SLM (OSLM) generalizes a previous result we got for OFDM/OQAM. It is shown that the impact on the oversampled OFDM is less strong but also that the influence of the pulse shape's length is still predominant.

Abstract

OFDM/OQAM is now a recognized alternative to conventional OFDM for the transmission of signals over multipath fading channels. Indeed with OFDM/OQAM, an appropriate pulse-shaping can be introduced to fight against time and frequency dispersion. The paper aims at showing that this pulse shaping gives interesting spectral properties in the case of a cubic nonlinear power amplifier. In a second step, an original algorithm is also proposed to reduce either the Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAPR) or the Cubic Metric (CM) of the OFDM/OQAM signal.

International audience; This paper describes a wideband radio channel sounder. Such a device is able to measure the complex time variant impulse response of the propagation channel. The impulse response is obtained by inversion of an optimal multisine sequence (flat spectrum, low crest factor). In standard configuration, this device is able to measure the propagation channel impulse response with a maximum bandwidth of 2 GHz in the 26 GHz frequency range. The bandwidth can be extended up to 2 GHz in UWB configuration. Up to 1 antenna can be connected to the channel sounder for the analysis of multiantenna technologies. The receiver digital part is based on a 1 Gs/s digitizer with 26 Mb embedded memory. The large memory capacity enables high measurement rates (s) without limiting the maximum number of measurement points (32768). RF and digital parts have been integrated into a VXI system. VXI systems are well suitable for the design of measurement prototypes by providing useful facilities (power supply, fan cooling, data bus, and trigger).

High-fidelity VAS requires the use of individualized head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) which describe the acoustic filtering properties of the listener's external auditory periphery. HRTFs serve the increasingly dominant role of implementation 3-D audio systems, which have been realized in some commercial applications. However, the cost of a 3-D audio system cannot be brought down because the efficiency of computation, the size of memory, and the synthesis of unmeasured HRTFs remain to be made better. Because HRTFs are unique for each user depending on his morphology, the economically realist synthesis of individualized HRTFs has to rely on some measurements. This paper presents a way to reduce the cost of a 3-D audio system using a statistical modeling which allows to use only few measurements for each user.

Abstract

International audience; Comprehensive modelling of the ultra-wide band (UWB) radio channel necessitates a good knowledge of its fading statistics. To evaluate the fluctuations of the UWB channel, a propagation experiment has been conducted in the 3.1 - 11 GHz frequency band, involving different antenna locations and moving people. The presented results emphasize the difference between the spatial and temporal channel variability, and provide a practical assessment of the UWB signal fading distribution in the case of a dynamic environment.

Abstract

In a multiple input multiple output (MIMO) context, we present, in this paper, a space-time bit interleaved coded modulation (STBICM) system combined with a space-time spreader called linear precoding. We propose a practical low-complexity receiver structure performing iteratively space-time detection and channel decoding. The novelty lies in the linearity of the space-time detector which consists of an MMSE MIMO PSIC equalizer and a linear deprecoder. Spectral efficiency and diversity can easily be tuned while keeping a feasible receiver. In the case of independent flat Rayleigh fading, simulation results show that such a system exploits both spatial diversity and capacity provided by the multi-antenna system.

In this paper, the combination of spatial multiplexing with coded multi-carrier code division multiplex access (MC-CDMA) for a multiple input multiple output (MIMO) Rayleigh fading multipath channel is considered. A practical receiver structure performing the iteratively MIMO detection, multi-user despreading and channel decoding is presented. The MIMO detector, employing a linear minimum mean square error (MMSE) parallel soft interference canceller (PSIC) equalizer, allows to cope with the co-antenna interference (CAI). Simulation results show the efficiency of the iterative receiver for spatial multiplexed coded MC-CDMA that brings spatial diversity, increasing data rate, and multi-user flexibility.

Abstract

International audience; We present in this paper an original model to simulate visual perception based on the detection of salient features. Salient features correspond to the maximum of conspicuity in a static image or in a sequence of images. We intend to use this information to provide visually interesting targets that can be used in multiple contexts. The extraction process of such an information is performed through multiple steps that correspond to different features locally encoding the conspicuity of a spatial location. We mainly use for those features spatial orientation and motion information, but other types of feature could be used as well. Two kinds of application are presented in this paper: video surveillance application and simulation of the visual perception of a synthetic actor.

Abstract

International audience; Good knowledge of transmission channel properties is necessary to study the performances of future UWB systems. Thus, efficient equipment is required to characterize and model the UWB propagation channel. This paper proposes a basic idea to convert a SIMO wideband channel sounder into an UWB channel sounder. These minor changes were applied to the France Telecom R&D channel sounder. The modified equipment enables real time measurement in the 3.1 10.6 GHz frequency band with more than 1 GHz bandwidth.

http://citi.insa-lyon.fr/wons2006/index.html; In third generation mobile networks, transmission rates can be assigned to both real time and non real time applications. We address in this paper the question of how to allocate transmission rates in a manner that is both optimal and fair. As optimality criterion we use the Pareto optimality notion, and as fairness criterion we use a general concept of which the max-min fairness (which is the standardized fairness concept in ATM networks) and the proportional fairness (which characterizes fairness obtained by some transport protocols for the Internet) are special cases.We show that the problem is a joint optimization system of the transmission rate and the power. We formulate the fair allocation problem as an optimization problem and propose both exact as well as approximating solutions. We consider both uplink and downlink problems and study also macrodiversity.

International audience; Techniques such as beam-forming use the property that energy transmitted by a mobile reaches the base station with a small angle aperture. This paper examines that property from experimental data from different environments. Examples and angular statistical results are given. Finally, a wideband multi-sensor propagation model based on a REVAL model is proposed for the urban environments.

Abstract

To build microstrip antenna arrays of slot-coupled elements, the authors investigated a series feed configuration. In order to respect the constraints imposed on the amplitude and phase of each patch, the influence of the individual radiating elements (patch and slot) was determined using the chain matrix method. One of the most important application is the achievement of a 2 imbricate antenna array.
