Abstract

This paper investigates the significance of truth-functional three valued logics of ill-known sets described by pairs of disjoint (or pairs of nested) subsets. In particular the case of three-valued logics of rough sets is studied in more details, showing that, while the mathematical underpinnings are sound, the relevance of these logics for reasoning about data-tables containing incomplete descriptions of objects is questionable. © 2010 IEEE.

Abstract

Fuzzy logic methods have been used successfully in many real-world applications, but the foundations of fuzzy logic remain under attack. Taken together, these two facts constitute a paradox. A second paradox is that almost all of the successful fuzzy logic applications are embedded controllers, while most of the theoretical papers on fuzzy methods deal with knowledge representation and reasoning. I hope to resolve these paradoxes by identifying which aspects of fuzzy logic render it useful in practice, and which aspects are inessential. My conclusions are based on a mathematical result, on a survey of literature on the use of fuzzy logic in heuristic control and in expert systems, and on practical experience in developing expert systems.

Abstract

Aggregation operators are often needed when building preference relations in multicriteria decision making problems. Most existing approaches have limitations due to incomparability between decisions or ties due to the use of some aggregation operations that produce a ranking. The natural way of overcoming the lack of discrimination power is to refine the obtained ranking. We bring an overview of methods that enable aggregation-based rankings to be refined, generalizing concepts like discrimin (max), leximin (max), and Lorentz orderings that refine such aggregation operations like the minimum (the maximum) and the sum.
