Mid-infrared range is of great interest due to atmosphere transparency window and possibility to generate high power radiation with high-efficiency emitters such as CO2 laser operating at 10.6 µm. We propose a mechanism to enhance the acousto-optical modulation efficiency at 10.6µm wavelength utilizing multilayered structures. Several types of structures providing excitation of Fabry-Perot and plasmon-polariton modes, phonon-polariton modes and waveguide modes are analyzed.
