12. LPV methods for spacecraft control: An overview and two case studies.

Abstract

In recent years there has been an increasing interest in the field of spacecraft control for the application of LPV methods to various systems (e.g., launchers, re-entry vehicles, satellites). The paper will first provide an overview of the state-of-the-art of the application of LPV techniques in this field. Then, the application of LPV modelling and controller design methods to the spacecraft attitude control problem will be specifically considered and two case studies will be illustrated. More precisely, first the problem of satellite attitude control using magnetic actuation will be introduced and an LPV formulation will be given; subsequently, the problem of attitude control using control moment gyros (CMGs) as primary actuators will be discussed and the LPV approach to the problem of developing steering laws for the CMGs will be described. 13. Robust attitude control of spacecraft with magnetic actuators.

Abstract

Magnetic torquers are frequently adopted as actuators for attitude control of small satellites in low Earth orbit. Such actuators generate a magnetic dipole which, in turn, lead to control torques thanks to the interaction with the magnetic field of the Earth. The main difficulty in the design of attitude control laws based on magnetic torquers is that the torques they generate are instantaneously constrained to lie in the plane orthogonal to the local direction of the geomagnetic field vector, which varies according the current orbital position of the spacecraft. This implies that the attitude regulation problem is formulated over a time-varying model. In this paper the problem of robust design of control laws for magnetically actuated spacecraft is considered and two approaches are proposed and compared; the former is based on linear time-periodic models while the latter relies on linear parameter-varying models. Abstract

Autonomous robots will soon enter our everyday life as self-driving cars. These vehicles are designed to behave according to certain sets of cooperative rules, such as traffic ones, and to respond to events that might be unpredictable in their occurrence but predictable in their nature, such as a pedestrian suddenly crossing a street, or another car losing control. As civilian autonomous cars will cross the road, racing autonomous cars are under development, which will require superior Artificial Intelligence Drivers to perform in structured but uncertain conditions. We describe some preliminary results obtained during the development of a planning and control system as key elements of an Artificial Intelligence driver for the competition scenario.
