9. Sputtered Tantalum Photonic Crystal Coatings for High-Temperature Energy Conversion Applications.

Abstract

Recent advances in photonic crystals have enabled high-efficiency thermophotovoltaic (TPV) energy conversion by allowing near-perfect spectral control. In this paper, photonic crystals fabricated in thick tantalum (Ta) coatings, sputtered onto a metallic substrate, were investigated as a potential replacement for photonic crystals fabricated in bulk refractory metal substrates in TPV applications. A 2-D photonic crystal was fabricated in a 30- $\mu \rm m$ thick Ta sputtered coating using standard semiconductor processes as a proof-of-concept for a selective emitter/solar absorber. The reflectance of the fabricated photonic crystal coating was characterized before and after 1 h anneals at 700, 900, and 1100 $^\circ$C, and after a 24 h anneal at 900 $^\circ$C. To protect its surface during the anneals, a thin conformal hafnia (HfO$_2)$ layer was deposited by atomic layer deposition on the photonic crystal. The photonic crystal showed high spectral selectivity in good agreement with numerical simulations and sustained the anneals with minimal structural degradation or change in its optical properties. This study presents a promising alternative to bulk substrates as a relatively low-cost and easily integrated platform for nanostructured devices in high-temperature energy conversion systems. Abstract

This paper introduces a unified approach to the validation of power-electronics (PE) control hardware, firmware, and software designs. It is based on a scalable application-specific ultralow-latency (ULL) digital processor core. The proposed ULL processor core simulates PE converters and systems comprising multiple power converters with a fixed 1-\mu\s simulation time step and latency, regardless of the size of the system. Owing to its ULL, the proposed platform enables the fully automatic testing and validation of the complete PE design comprising component safe-operating-area validation, system protection, firmware, and software implementation as well as overall system performance optimization. Abstract

This paper develops and experimentally demonstrates a new class of high-fidelity model-based fault detection and isolation filters for three-phase AC-DC power electronics systems. The structure of these filters is similar to that of a piecewise linear observer and in the absence of faults the filter residual converges to zero. On the other hand, whenever a fault occurs, by appropriately choosing the filter gain, the filter residual will exhibit certain geometric characteristics that allow the fault to be detected and, in certain cases, also isolated. Key advantages of these filters include fast detection of all possible component faults and the ability to capture slow degradation in individual components. In order to experimentally demonstrate their feasibility, the filters are implemented on an ultra-fast application-specific real-time processor. While the theoretical framework developed is general, the analysis, simulations, and experiments are focused on widely used power electronics systems implementing three-phase AC-DC converters that are used in, e.g., motor drive applications and distributed static compensators.
