12. Three-Port Lorentz Resonance Based Permittivity Sensor and Microwave Comparator

Abstract

This paper presents for the first time a compact three-port Lorentz resonance-based microstrip sensor for permittivity and moisture sensing, as well as refractive index comparison. The proposed sensor is verified by simulations and experiments. The resonant frequency of the designed sensor is 2.24 GHz. The proposed sensor has a quality factor of 102, sensitivity of 45.4 mm/refractive index unit, and figure-of-merit of 34.6. The sensitivity of the proposed sensor is quite superior to other resonance based sensors and a fair comparison is presented in this work. The proposed sensor can be used to find the permittivity of dielectric materials, the moisture content of plants, as well as can be used as a refractive index comparator.

24. Polarization-State Modulation in Fano Resonant Graphene Metasurface Reflector.

Abstract

Although Polarization Modulation offers a high spectral efficiency, it has been not exploited much in modern communication systems because of the involvement of high switching speeds and complexity of associated hardware. We propose a dynamically controllable graphene metasurface capable to switch the polarization state of incident THz waves in real-time. The metasurface is designed by patterning two-dimensional graphene sheets with Fano-resonant chiral unit cells. Since the reflectance spectrum is characterized with co and cross polarized fields that bear asymmetric Fano line-shapes, several combinations of linear and elliptical polarization states are observed in a narrowband spectrum. At a fixed frequency, the electrostatic tunability property of graphene allows to switch between different polarization states by varying the chemical potential between 500 and 700 meV. The polarization state modulation with the proposed chiral graphene based metasurface is applied to implement a quaternary modulated digital communication system. Full-wave simulation results show the strong possibility of polarization modulation in THz communication systems. Graphene metasurfaces on account of the high electron mobility and discrete Fermi levels offer high switching speeds and seamless integration with digital systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

25. An Interference-Based Quadruple-L Cross Metasurface Absorber for RF Energy Harvesting.

Abstract

In this letter, we propose metasurface absorbers for energy harvesting that work on the principles of destructive interference and phase cancellation. The metasurface is designed by arranging four L-shaped resonant unit cells in a fourfold symmetrical geometry leading to a cross configuration. At resonance frequency, such a geometrical configuration results in destructive interference of the electromagnetic waves emanating from diagonal elements. When used in a reflection mode as a metasurface absorber, the reciprocity theorem necessitates the flow of helicoidal resonant currents that vectorially cancel each other to make the overall metasurface nonradiative that, therefore, produces a null in the backscattering direction. A 90% absorption in simulation is achieved without explicit consideration for a free-space impedance matching or using dissipative substrate. The absorbed RF energy is harvested at 2.25 GHz to practically demonstrate the conversion efficiency of over 55% from microwave to dc. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
