Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) such as Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) sense and actuate their environment in pursuit of a mission. The attack surface of these remotely located, sensing and communicating devices is both large, and exposed to adversarial actors, making mission assurance a challenging problem. While best-practice security policies should be followed, they are rarely enough to guarantee mission success as not all components in the system may be trusted and the properties of the environment (e.g., the RF environment) may be under the control of the attacker. CPS must thus be built with a high degree of resilience to mitigate threats that security cannot alleviate. In this paper, we describe the Agile and Resilient Embedded Systems (ARES) methodology and metric set. The ARES methodology pursues cyber security and resilience (CSR) as high level system properties to be developed in the context of the mission. An analytic process guides system developers in defining mission objectives, examining principal issues, applying CSR technologies, and understanding their interactions.

As unmanned aerial systems (UAS) continue to increasingly require greater integration of sophisticated software systems, developing and utilizing best practices and principles of formal software systems engineering can enhance and ensure the safety, reliability, and performance of these systems. This paper highlights the detailed implementation of a number of such tools, including agile software development methods such as automated software testing, and enhanced simulation-in-the-loop testing for multi-UAS virtual and live-fly capabilities. Significant and tangible benefit to active field experimentation is demonstrated through description of these integrated approaches, impacting ongoing efforts in multi-UAS research, testing, and assessment practices.

Infants born prior to thirty seven weeks of gestation are referred to as premature. Prematurity is a significant problem in developing countries, where preterm infants make up approximately 25% of all live births. The World Health Organization (WHO) and Engineering World Health (EWH) have both expressed the necessity for a low cost, transportable infant incubation unit that can be used specifically for transit. The incubation unit is a TCNJ legacy project; several improvements were proposed to an existing design. The HVAC system was redesigned and will house the humidity and heating systems. A new humidity system has been added with both measurement and control. A new heating element has been designed using heating coils typically found in household appliances. A test baby model was designed using information about the size and thermal characteristics of a preterm infant so that the safety and efficacy of the design can be assessed. SIMULINK modeling of the incubator and a model of a baby will be used to better understand the thermodynamics of the system during operation. Manufacture, assembly, and testing of this new design will be completed during Spring 2013.

An analytical performance evaluation of a double token-ring LAN (local area network) at the LLC (logical link control) layer is given. In particular the throughput/delay characteristic of DAFNE (Deterministic Access Fiber Network), a double token-ring optical-fiber LAN, is illustrated. A queuing model of a connection between two end users at remote stations is given, other users and flow control are taken into account. >

To reach the design intensity of 1.5/spl times/10/sup 13/ protons per pulse in the AGS Booster, transverse coupled bunch instabilities with an estimated growth rate of 1500s/sup -1/ have to be dampened. A prototype transverse damper has been tested successfully using a one turn digital delay and closed orbit suppression implemented in a programmable gate array. An updated damper, which includes an algorithm to optimize damping for a changing betatron tune, will also be presented. >

The aim of the CYGNO project is the construction and operation of a 1~m$^3$ gas TPC for directional dark matter searches and coherent neutrino scattering measurements, as a prototype toward the 100-1000~m$^3$ (0.15-1.5 tons) CYGNUS network of underground experiments. In such a TPC, electrons produced by dark-matter- or neutrino-induced nuclear recoils will drift toward and will be multiplied by a three-layer GEM structure, and the light produced in the avalanche processes will be readout by a sCMOS camera, providing a 2D image of the event with a resolution of a few hundred micrometers. Photomultipliers will also provide a simultaneous fast readout of the time profile of the light production, giving information about the third coordinate and hence allowing a 3D reconstruction of the event, from which the direction of the nuclear recoil and consequently the direction of the incoming particle can be inferred. Such a detailed reconstruction of the event topology will also allow a pure and efficient signal to background discrimination. [EN] In this paper we describe the evolution of the FPGA-based prototype deployed in the MANGO project, from a hardware prototyping platform of HPC architectures to a computing platform targeting HPC and AI applications. Our main goal is to reinvest on the MANGO cluster by providing a duality in its use for both large-scale hardware prototyping and highperformance computation. From our experience we can reach several interesting conclusions about the complexities and hurdles that lay below FPGA technologies, and therefore, shedding some light onto the real complexities that difficult the adoption of FPGAs on either large-scale pure HPC systems or on hybrid systems (HPC + BigData/Ai)., This work is supported by the European Commission through RECIPE and DeepHealth projects, under the Horizon 2020 program, grant number 801137 and 825111, respectively.
