1. Modeling and Design of a Zero-Voltage Switching Battery Charger for Photovoltaic Applications

Abstract

A novel solar-fed quasi-resonant battery charger operating in the Discontinuous Voltage Mode (DVM) is proposed and designed to achieve a high efficiency on a wide range of operating powers. The converter design procedure ensures the achievement of the Zero Voltage Switching of its MOSFETs on a wide range of operating conditions, thus reducing the switching losses. An analytical model of the converter operation and its static characteristic in its two operating modes is provided. A step-by-step design procedure for the converter is proposed for given battery and PV panel specifications. Measurements on a 100 W, 12 V-output prototype validate the accuracy of the modelling and highlight a high efficiency always above 90.9% with the input voltage ranging from 26.5 V and 28.5 V and an input power in the wide 20 W–100 W range.

Abstract

In photonic integrated networks on chip (NoCs), microrings are commonly used for adding or dropping a single optical signal to be switched in the NoC. This paper demonstrates the feasibility of adding or dropping two optical signals at the same wavelength in the same microring of NoCs with bus and ring topology. More specifically, the same microring can be used to support simultaneous bidirectional transmissions of two signals to be coupled in the NoC topology, leading to two different configurations, called shared source-microring and shared destination-microring. Spectral characterization shows good agreement between simulations and measurements taken on silicon-based integrated NoC. Bit-error-rate (BER) measurements indicate that the shared sourcemicroring configuration performs better, achieving a penalty as low as 1.5 dB for a BER of 10-9 at 10 Gb/s in the bus NoC. A higher penalty in the ring NoC for both configurations is due to higher crosstalk in the interconnecting ring.

Abstract

International audience; Automatic tracking of cell deformation during development using time-lapse confocal microscopy is a challenging task. In plant cell tissues, large deformations and several division cycles can occur between two consecutive time-points making the image registration and tracking procedure particularly difficult. Here, we propose an iterative approach where an initial registration transformation and cell-to-cell mapping are alternatively refined using high-confidence associations selected on the basis of a geometric context preservation score. The method, evaluated on a long time-lapse series of floral meristem, clearly demonstrates its superiority over a non-iterative approach. In addition, we show that the geometric context preservation score can be used to define a lineage quality assessment metric that makes it possible for an expert to provide locally nudges to finalize the lineage detection if necessary in a semi-automatic way.

Abstract

Epitaxially grown III-V semiconductor lasers on silicon substrates are key to the development of low-cost silicon photonic circuits. Antimony based Composite Quantum Well (CQW) devices on silicon, which overcome lattice constant and thermal mismatch differences, have been successfully demonstrated in the important 1.55 m long-haul telecoms wavelength region [1] . However, further development is required to address high threshold current densities and temperature sensitivity. To improve these on-silicon devices we investigate and report on the efficiency limiting mechanisms of the equivalent active regions grown on GaSb. The devices investigated here consist of compressively strained Ga 0.8 In 0.2 Sb QWs with Al 0.35 Ga 0.65 As 0.03 Sb 0.97 barriers and Al 0.9 Ga 0.1 As 0.07 Sb 0.93 cladding layers lattice matched to a GaSb substrate [2] . In this paper we report on the temperature and high hydrostatic pressure dependent investigation of these devices. We identify details of the principal efficiency limiting mechanisms and sources of temperature sensitivity and provide specific recommendations for design improvement.

Abstract

Detection of human presence is a key feature in Human Computer Interaction. Solutions based on cameras are attractive, but require computer vision techniques to extract meaningful data, which can be expensive from a computational point of view. In this work, we present a new system that merges a low resolution thermal camera with advanced feature extraction techniques such as Convolutional Neural Networks. We demonstrate the possibility to adapt their execution to resource-constrained platform without significant loss of performance, by processing data on a 32-bit low power microcontroller, performing the classification on thermal video stream. It achieve 76.7% of accuracy in the microcontroller, requiring only 16.5 mW in continuous classification mode and using 6 kB of RAM.

Abstract

We simulate the optical coupling between $2.3\ {\boldsymbol{\mu m}}$ GaSb-based diode lasers (DLs) epitaxially grown on on-axis silicon (001) and passive waveguides in the butt-coupling geometry. 3D FDTD simulations reveal how the optical coupling is affected by the air gap between the laser cavity and the waveguide that arises from the laser etched-facet definition. We also model alternative approaches consisting in filling the gap with higher-refractive index materials transparent in the mid-infrared window. Finally, because of their fabrication flexibility, we propose to implement polymeric waveguides in order to achieve improved coupling performances. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Efficient second-order probabilistic inference in uncertain Bayesian networks was recently introduced. However, such second -order inference methods presume training over complete training data. While the expectation-maximization framework is well-established for learning Bayesian network parameters for incomplete training data, the framework does not determine the covariance of the parameters. This paper introduces two methods to compute the covariances for the parameters of Bayesian networks or Markov random fields due to incomplete data for two-node networks. The first method computes the covariances directly from the posterior distribution of parameters, and the second method more efficiently estimates the covariances from the Fisher information matrix. Finally, the implications and effectiveness of these covariances is theoretically and empirically evaluated.

Abstract

In this study, a semi-automatic, easy-to-use classification method for the identification and removal of fMRI noise is proposed and tested. The method relies on subject-level spatial independent component analysis (ICA) of fMRI data. Starting from a reference set of labeled independent components (ICs), novel ICs are classified as physiological/artefactual by combining a spatial correlation (SC) analysis with the reference ICs and relative power spectral (PS) analysis. Here, ICs from a task-based fMRI dataset were used as reference. SC and SP thresholds were set using a test dataset (5 subjects, same fMRI protocol) based on Receiving Operating Characteristic curves. The tool performance and versatility were measured on a resting-state fMRI dataset (5 subjects). Our results show that the method can automatically identify noise-related ICs with accuracy, specificity and sensitivity higher than 80% across different fMRI protocols. These findings also suggest that the reference set provided in the present study might be used to mark ICs coming from independent taskrelated or resting-state fMRI datasets.Clinical relevance- The new method will be included in a userfriendly, open-source tool for removal of noisy contributions from fMRI datasets to be used in clinical and research practices.

Abstract

Millimeter wave (mmWave) wideband channels in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission are described by a sparse set of impulse responses in the angle-delay, or space-time (ST), domain. In this paper we consider the problem of channel estimation and we discuss subspace methods which exploit the low-rank (LR) algebraic structure of the MIMO channel matrix and the related slowly- and fast-varying features (angles/delays of arrival and fading amplitudes, respectively). The main drawback of the optimal LR method is the excessively slow convergence to the mean square error lower bound for invariant angles/delay and time-varying fading. In this paper, new suboptimal LR techniques are proposed to reduce the complexity and accelerate the convergence. Numerical results show that the proposed methods closely approach the asymptotic bound with a number of slots that is two order of magnitudes lower than the optimal method, providing significant performance gains in realistic mmWave propagation scenarios.

Abstract

We study the radiation environment near the terahertz (THz) dump of the CERN Linear Electron Accelerator for Research (CLEAR) electron accelerator at CERN, using FLUktuierende KAskade in German (FLUKA) simulations and single-event upset (SEU) measurements taken with 32-Mbit Integrated Silicon Solution Inc. (ISSI) static random access memories (SRAMs). The main focus is on the characterization of the neutron field to evaluate its suitability for radiation tests of electronics in comparison with other irradiation facilities. Neutrons at CLEAR are produced via photonuclear reactions, mostly initiated by photons from the electromagnetic cascades that occur when the beam is absorbed by the dump structure. Good agreement is generally found between the measured single-event upset (SEU) rates and the expected values obtained from FLUKA simulations and the known SEU response of the ISSI SRAMs to neutrons, while one position is found to be potentially affected by photon-driven SEUs. Abstract

The development of efficient thermal emitters with controlled spectra is of interest because of the potential applications in infrared sensing, thermal imaging, and thermophotovoltaics. In this work, we develop an efficient room temperature thermal emitter exclusively based on semiconductor materials. The structure consists of multilayered structures of heavily-doped and un-doped semiconductor. Semiconductor plasmonic resonators compose the top layer of the structure. By careful design of the metamaterial perfect absorber, it is possible to reach an emittance equal to unity.

This work evaluates and compares electrical and thermal behavior of magnetic material technologies applied to power inductors. The objective is to identify materials that have the highest volumetric power density and efficiency. The nonidealities caused by variations in magnetic permeability increase design complexity, and knowing the thermal, electrical and magnetic relations in project parameters is essential. Inductor designs for MPP, HF, Sendust, Kool $\mathrm{M}\mu$ MAX and P ferrite materials are evaluated and compared over a span of operating points (frequency and current ripple). Results present the relationship between volume, current density, copper losses and core losses, pointing the specific ranges each material is recommended at. Design procedure is described, and discussions relate performance to cost.

Abstract

In this paper we provide a critical analysis with met- rics that will inform guidelines for designing distributed systems for Collective Situational Understanding (CSU). CSU requires both collective insight—i.e., accurate and deep understanding of a situation derived from uncertain and often sparse data and collective foresight—i.e., the ability to predict what will happen in the future. When it comes to complex scenarios, the need for a distributed CSU naturally emerges, as a single monolithic approach not only is unfeasible: it is also undesirable. We therefore propose a principled, critical analysis of AI techniques that can support specific tasks for CSU to derive guidelines for designing distributed systems for CSU.
