In the field of paper conservation and archival research, identifying the raw materials of paper is important to elucidate its history and culture. As the most basic element of the raw materials for paper, fibers have not been sufficiently investigated. In this study, we propose a nondestructive method for estimating paper fibers from macro photographs ( $4000\times3000$ pixels) captured using a digital camera. The proposed method consists of background patch (500 pixels per side) detection (BPD), wherein background regions with no text are identified; patch fiber classification (PFC), wherein background patches obtained after BPD are analyzed for fiber classification; and paper fiber estimation (PFE), wherein macro images obtained after PFC are analyzed for fiber estimation. BPD and PFC are employed to perform patch-based classification on segmented macro images, which are reconstructed during PFE to obtain the final fiber estimation results. We performed experiments using 1337 macro images (64176 patches) to evaluate the fiber estimation accuracy for kozo, mitsumata, and gampi via three-fold cross-validation. The average fiber classification accuracy for patch images was observed to be 79.1%; accordingly, the average fiber estimation accuracy for macro images was 85.8%. Experimental results indicated that PFE can be realized in a nondestructive manner on macro images of paper captured using a digital camera.

In the era of Industry 4.0, digital transformation has spurred the swift advancement of technologies, including intelligent predictive maintenance scheduling, prognostics and health management. The accurate prediction of remaining useful life plays a crucial role in these technologies as it extends power equipment’s safe operational duration and decreases the maintenance costs associated with unforeseen shutdowns. Also, the increased accessibility of data for monitoring system conditions has paved the way for the more immense adoption of machine learning models in prognostics and health management for power transformers. At the moment, with the ever-increasing demand for electricity, there is a corresponding increase in the degradation processes of power transformers. Transformers insulation system and more importantly, the paper insulation happens to be the principal part where the degradation is prominent. Therefore, an accurate prediction of the insulating paper condition through its degree of polymerization is required to guarantee the reliability of power transformers. In this regard, the predictions, reliability, and health monitoring of this power equipment can be actualized by modeling the degradation of transformer insulation paper through several machine learning frameworks. In this view, this review paper has been drafted not only to serve as a guide for researchers interested in the fields of transformer insulation system fault prognosis but also to offer insights into potential research directions as existing literature in modeling and evaluating transformer paper insulation is presented.

Evaluating the long-term influence of academic papers in the early stage after publication is crucial for research management and decision-making. Although the total number of citations has been considered as a valid indicator to measure the academic influence of papers, there are still some bottleneck problems in predicting future citation counts. Firstly, it remains a challenging task to select the reasonable features due to the diversity of model features. Secondly, some prediction models are overly complex and their defects may cause prediction bias or even errors. Finally, the most important thing is that very few models possess long-term predictive ability. This paper proposes a prediction model that can provide an early evaluation of the long-term citations, or the long-term influence, of academic papers. The model uses features available immediately after publication or after a certain period of time. Taking academic papers in Information Science and Library Science as our experimental subject, we train the model using three machine learning algorithms and find that the artificial neural network performs satisfactorily. Our findings may offer guidance for research management and decision-making.

Recently, Polarization Depolarization current (PDC) measurement is widely accepted time domain spectroscopy-based method for assessing the insulation condition. Various performance parameters like Dissipation factor (%tan $\delta $ ), Paper Moisture (%pm), Dielectric Adsorption Ratio (DAR), Polarization index (PI) etc. can be estimated by analyzing the PDC data. During field measurement various factors influences the recorded PDC data. As per existing literature, presence of low frequency noise, effect of temperature variation and influence of residual charge are common during field measurement. These factors significantly affect recorded polarization current and hence estimated performance parameters. Hence, analysis using recorded polarization current data may provide misleading information regarding insulation condition. Under such practical situation where polarization current is affected by above mentioned factors that generally observed during field measurement, depolarization current should be used for analysis of insulation condition. The depolarization current does not influence by such external factors. The present work shows the importance of depolarization current where polarization current is influenced by external low frequency noise and residual charge. The analysis firstly applied on sample prepared in the laboratory and then on data collected from real life in-situ transformers. The results obtained from the analysis shows that the data obtained from depolarization current is more reliable.

Cardiotocography (CTG) is a clinical procedure that is used to track and gauge the severity of fetal distress. Although CTG is the most often used equipment to monitor and assess the health of the fetus, the high rate of false positive results due to visual interpretation significantly contributes to needless surgical delivery or delayed intervention. In this study, a novel approach is introduced where both printing CTG paper is digitized and a machine learning approach is employed to detect the abnormality in the digitized CTG signal. Image processing-based preprocessing steps are employed to make the printing of CTG paper more convenient to extract the CTG signal. Various signal-processing techniques are used to calibrate the extracted CTG signal. Then, Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) is used to decompose the CTG signal into its frequency components and instantaneous frequency and spectral entropy features are extracted. After feature normalization and feature selection with ReliefF algorithm, support vector machines (SVM) is used for the classification of the normal and abnormal classes. A novel dataset is used in the experimental works and various performance evaluation metrics are used for the evaluation of the achievement of the proposed method. 10-fold cross-validation-based experiments show that the proposed method is quite efficient in abnormality detection in printing CTG papers where an average accuracy score of around 90.0% is produced.

Flashover characteristics are closely related to the electrical field distribution on the surface of oil-paper insulation. In this study, the effects of electrical field and DC voltage components on the creepage flashover characteristics of oil-paper insulation under combined AC-DC voltage (CADV) are investigated using two electrode models. The results demonstrate that when the DC voltage component is large, the flashover voltage under the influence of strong parallel electric field component is approximately 1.2 times higher than that under the influence of strong normal electric field component. When the DC voltage component value increases under the influence of strong normal electric field component, the value of corresponding AC voltage component of the creepage flashover voltage exhibits a decreasing trend. It is believed that due to the strong normal electric field component, the electrons intensify the collision on the surface of the insulating pressboard. Under the influence of the DC voltage component and due to the presence of space charge on the insulating pressboard, the distribution shape of carbonized particles on the surface of the insulating pressboard after creepage flashover is different. Furthermore, the instantaneous energy release during creepage flashover under CADV is higher than that under AC voltage, and the greater the DC voltage component value, more severe is the damage to the fibers on the insulating pressboard surface.

This special section of the IEEE Open Journal of Circuits and Systems (OJCAS) aims to highlight a selection of papers from 2022 IEEE Asia Pacific Conference on Circuits and Systems (APCCAS). Due to COVID-19 and travel restrictions, APCCAS 2022 was organised as a hybrid conference during 11 - 13 November 2022 in Shenzhen China. As the regional flagship conference of IEEE Circuits and Systems Society, APCCAS 2022 was driven by the theme “Building a Fully-connected AIoT World” to emphasize the CAS Society’s potential for finding multidisciplinary solutions to societal and industrial challenges. The papers in this special issue were selected from a comprehensive list of papers presented in the sessions of APCCAS 2022.

In on-site measurement, as the transformer’s structure is often unknown, the application of frequency domain spectroscopy (FDS) is greatly limited in moisture assessment of transformer. This paper proposes a moisture assessment method for oil-immersed paper based on the dynamic characteristic frequency even for an unknown transformer structure. FDS tests are performed on the oil-paper insulation, corresponding oil-immersed paper, and mineral oil under different moisture conditions. The moisture criterion of oil-immersed paper and the influence of the structural parameters on the calculated frequency spectroscopy at different frequencies are discussed. It is concluded that the moisture criterion’s effectiveness, which indicates the sensitivity of assessed moisture content to the error of the tan $\delta $ , changes at different frequencies. Moreover, there are some frequencies at which tan $\delta $ is not influenced by structural parameters and is close to the measured value, which are regarded as “characteristic frequencies.” Based on the characteristic frequency, the moisture content of oil-immersed paper is assessed according to the frequency spectroscopy of oil-paper insulation without the structural parameters. The result shows that the assessing frequency changes under different moisture conditions, and the error of the assessed moisture content is less than 0.1%.

The availability of the raw materials needed to produce fibre is decreasing as demand for fibre increases over time. In an effort, to preserve natural biodiversity and improve waste management, this research aims to substitute available raw materials for wood fibres. Empty fruit bunch (EFB) is regarded as waste in the oil palm industry and is abundantly available as a renewable energy source, particularly in Southeast Asian countries. The primary objective of this study is to investigate the utilisation of EFB as a substitute for insulating paper in transformers. The morphology, degree of polymerization, tensile strength, thermal characteristics, permittivity, conductivity, and electrical properties (breakdown field strength and lightning impulse performance) of EFB were measured and compared to the properties of Kraft insulating paper. Using FESEM at a magnification of $500\times $ , the morphological properties were examined. Based on FTIR measurement, the chemical bonding between Kraft and EFB samples varied slightly. Compared to EFB, Kraft-pulped insulating paper has a higher degree of polymerization and the ability to endure high temperatures. Furthermore, the breakdown field strength performance demonstrates that Kraft insulating paper is 20.30% higher than EFB insulating paper. In terms of tensile strength and lightning impulse, EFB insulating paper demonstrated comparable performance to conventional insulating paper. A new approach to the manufacturing of EFB insulating paper could result in improvements to the material’s insulation qualities.

This study aims to develop a prediction model for paper quality assessment to support technology-assisted peer review. The prediction technique is intended to reduce the review burden, which is becoming a critical issue in today’s paper submission process. However, most existing works on this topic were built by involving the reviewers’ comments, which is considered unfair and inapplicable for reducing the review burden. Therefore, our prediction method relies only on features extracted from the paper to address this issue. The method covers three tasks as follows: two are classification tasks and one is a regression task. The classification tasks predict the final review decision (accepted-rejected) and estimate the paper quality (good-poor), while a regression task predicts the review scores. Additionally, the classification and regression tasks are implemented using three main features i.e., citing sentence features developed based on the labeling scheme of citation functions, regular sentence features created by applying the label of citation functions to non-citation text, and reference-based features constructed by identifying the source of citations. Furthermore, the classification experiments on the dataset obtained from the International Conference on Learning Representations 2017–2020 showed that our methods are more effective in the good-poor task than the accepted-rejected task by demonstrating the best accuracy of 0.75 and 0.73, respectively. Moreover, we also reached a satisfactory recall of 0.99 using only the citing sentence features to obtain as many good papers as possible in the good-poor task. Our regression experiments indicate that the best result in predicting the average review score is higher than the individual review score by showing Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of 1.34 and 1.71, respectively.

Reading newly-published papers in time is important for researchers since these papers provide the latest research findings. However, it is challenging to retrieve newly-published papers through common query-based search engines because the papers lacking sufficient citations and links are usually ranked too low in the search list. To this end, we design a time-aware joint model to infer users’ preference for the newly-published papers with the help of subsidiary relations of social and article linkages. The temporal preference of researchers for articles is jointly modeled with social and article relations by a group of matrices sharing common dimensions of researchers and articles. A joint multi-relational factorization algorithm is devised to approximate the latent factor matrices along with a temporal recommendation algorithm to predict the personalized new referential papers based on the factor matrices. The experimental results on real-world datasets show that the proposed model outperforms the state-of-the-art methods.

Robotic process automation (RPA) is automating various job processes in many offices. However, most existing RPA systems automate only processes that are performed on computers. It is highly desirable to develop physical RPA systems that incorporate real robots to automate physical job processes. When developing physical RPA systems, handling paper is particularly important because many physical office jobs involve handling paper documents. However, it is not easy for robots to handle paper because paper is fragile. To address this issue, we propose an electroadhesive paper gripper in this study. The use of electroadhesion enables a robot to handle paper in a simple, non-destructive, and quiet manner. We provide (1) a mechanism for lifting a sheet of paper without accurate control of robot hands, (2) a mechanism for a small gripper to hold a large sheet of paper without bending it, and (3) a method for quickly releasing a sheet of paper. Furthermore, we apply the proposed paper gripper to a document-sorting robot. The robot that we have developed automatically arranges a given stack of paper documents in a predetermined order (e.g., alphabetical or numerical). Experimental results show the validity of the paper gripper and the sorting robot.

The hydrophilic nature of cellulose compromises the dielectric properties of kraft paper insulation when exposed to water and moisture. The effort to address this setback is an ongoing research enquiry. In the present work, surface-modified rutile-titanium dioxide nanoparticles (rutile-TiO2 NPs) are reinforced into cellulose pulp to fabricate a nanocomposite kraft paper insulation. Surface modification of the nanofiller particles is intended to reduce the hydrophilicity of the resultant nanocomposite kraft paper insulation. The nanoparticles (rutile-TiO2 NPs) improve other dielectric properties of the insulation. The chemicals used for the surface modification of the rutile-TiO2 NPs were the alkyl ketene dimer (AKD) and alkenyl succinic anhydride (ASA). The nanofiller retention, dispersion and hydrophobic properties of the resultant reinforced kraft paper were experimentally analyzed. The results show that more than 50% of the nanofillers were retained within the reinforced kraft paper and translated to 1.5% by weight loading of the nanoparticles in the kraft paper. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed evenly distributed nanofillers, with some traces of agglomeration. The moisture absorption property of the kraft paper specimen modified with rutile-TiO2 NPs surface conditioned with 5 vol/vol% ASA improved by 74% compared to the control (reference) specimen. Water vapor transmission rate of the surface-modified nanoparticles reinforced kraft paper insulation decreased by 30%. Compared to the unfilled paper, the contact angle of water droplets on the surface of the reinforced kraft paper improved by 12%. Water absorption rate improved by being 4 times slower in paper specimens containing rutile-TiO2 NPs surface conditioned with 5 vol/vol% ASA. Dielectric dissipation factor measurement results showed that the specimen modified with rutile-TiO2 NPs surface conditioned with 5 vol/vol% ASA had 40% lower dielectric losses than the reference samples. This study, therefore, has successfully improved the hydrophobic properties of kraft paper by filling it with surface-modified rutile TiO2 using 5% ASA as the nanoparticle surfactant.

During the past two decades, a number of two-terminal switching devices have been demonstrated in the literature. They typically exhibit hysteric behavior in the current-to-voltage characteristics. These devices have often been also referred to as memristive devices. Their capacity to switch and exhibit electrical hysteresis has made them well-suited for applications such as data storage, in-memory computing, and in-sensor computing or in-memory sensing. The aim of this perspective paper is to is twofold. Firstly, it seeks to provide a comprehensive examination of the existing research findings in the field and engage in a critical discussion regarding the potential for the development of new non-Von-Neumann computing machines that can seamlessly integrate sensing and computing within memory units. Secondly, this paper aims to demonstrate the practical application of such an innovative approach in the realm of cancer medicine. Specifically, it explores the modern concept of employing multiple cancer markers simultaneously to enhance the efficiency of diagnostic processes in cancer medicine.

Nowadays many research articles are prefaced with research highlights to summarize the main findings of the paper. Highlights not only help researchers precisely and quickly identify the contributions of a paper, they also enhance the discoverability of the article via search engines. We aim to automatically construct research highlights given certain segments of a research paper. We use a pointer-generator network with coverage mechanism and a contextual embedding layer at the input that encodes the input tokens into SciBERT embeddings. We test our model on a benchmark dataset, CSPubSum, and also present MixSub, a new multi-disciplinary corpus of papers for automatic research highlight generation. For both CSPubSum and MixSub, we have observed that the proposed model achieves the best performance compared to related variants and other models proposed in the literature. On the CSPubSum dataset, our model achieves the best performance when the input is only the abstract of a paper as opposed to other segments of the paper. It produces ROUGE-1, ROUGE-2 and ROUGE-L F1-scores of 38.26, 14.26 and 35.51, respectively, METEOR score of 32.62, and BERTScore F1 of 86.65 which outperform all other baselines. On the new MixSub dataset, where only the abstract is the input, our proposed model (when trained on the whole training corpus without distinguishing between the subject categories) achieves ROUGE-1, ROUGE-2 and ROUGE-L F1-scores of 31.78, 9.76 and 29.3, respectively, METEOR score of 24.00, and BERTScore F1 of 85.25.

The paper manufacturing process is a large-scale process in which the control performance is required to be optimal in the machine direction (MD) and cross direction (CD). This work focuses on CD control, which is more complicated than MD control. Uncertainties in the process arise from different sources, so there is a requirement for better modeling techniques. The control of paper profile properties, namely basis weight, moisture, and caliper, is done with the help of actuators that are distributed spatially. Basis weight is taken as the profile parameter in this work. The work aims to improve robust performance and simplify the control design problem. Here, $\mu $ synthesis methods are used for controller design, as this method provides guaranteed robust performance. To simplify the design problem two-dimensional modeling is explained explicitly. The conventional methods of $\mu $ analysis are extended to spatial coordinates. The performance of the $\mu $ synthesis designed method is compared with the open loop shaping method. Control performance is judged in terms of sensitivity, stability margin, $\sigma $ performance, and robust performance. The effectiveness of the developed $\mu $ synthesis designed method is demonstrated using the industrial example from the pulp and paper industry.

Recently reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has attracted great attention because it can create a smart wireless environment. Hence it can enhance the capacity and coverage of the wireless network significantly. A thorough review of RISs has been presented in this paper focusing on the hardware aspect of the RIS. Beyond-5G/6G communication will have a smart propagation environment, where RIS can be used for such communications. RIS consists of various small unit cells. The unit cells should have some tunning mechanism to reflect or transmit the incoming waves in the desired direction. It is possible to tune the impedance of the unit cells using PIN diodes, varactor didoes, microelectromechanical (MEMS), thermal, and other ways. In this paper, the background of RIS has been discussed where RIS will play a significant role in beyond-5G/6G communications. We have also added the theoretical background of RIS and motivations to writing this paper. After that several published papers in the literature have been presented so that the readers can get an overall idea about the RIS and its hardware. Hence, this paper will be very useful for practitioner engineers and researchers. RISs have been presented in various tables and various parameters have been presented. We have discussed challenges and solutions for the hardware of the RIS design. We have also discussed potential research and research gap that can be explored in the future. Lastly, we have added a conclusion for this review paper. In our manuscript, we have added 154 references. There are various kinds of RIS available in the literature. We have added different types of RISs in this manuscript. The magnitude and phase of the reflection and transmission coefficients are the main parameters of any kind of RIS.

Personalized PageRank is a variant of PageRank, widely developed for citation recommendation. However, the personalized PageRank that works with a vast amount and rich scholarly data still results in information overload. Sometimes, junior scholars still need help to arrange queries quickly because of limited domain knowledge. Senior researchers need reference papers regarding a similar topic they intend to search for and related topics as a new insight. In this research, scientific citation recommendation aims to find the most influential papers with similar and related topics. Related topic papers in serendipitous perspectives are reference papers that are novel, diversified and unexpected to a user. The unexpectedness of recommended papers can be papers with different topics to queries but still relevant. To accomplish these challenges, we propose a framework of scientific citation recommendation with serendipitous perspectives. The framework includes feature extraction of an academic citation network, selection of multi-topic communities, and ranking papers in the selected multi-topic communities by modified PageRank. Papers in the chosen communities tend to link to similar and related papers. Modified PageRank is an extension of personalized PageRank, which works on multi-topic communities and manuscript queries. The experiments reveal that the proposed models outperform some models of personalized PageRank and some models of Content-Based Filtering. The multi-topic communities-based models work more effectively than the baselines if they run in a large dataset since the topic communities become more cohesive.

With the accelerating development of science and technology, the academic papers being published in various fields are increasing rapidly. Academic papers specially in science and technology fields are a crucial media for researchers who develop new technologies by identifying knowledge regarding the latest technological trends and conduct derivative studies in science and technology. Therefore, the continual collection of extensive academic papers, structuring of metadata, and construction of databases are significant tasks. However, research on automatic metadata extraction from Korean papers is not being actively conducted currently owing to insufficient Korean training data. We automatically constructed the largest labeled corpus in South Korea to date from 315,320 PDF papers belonging to 503 Korean academic journals and this labeled corpus can be used for training the models of automatic extraction for 12 metadata types from PDF papers. This labeled corpus is available at https://doi.org/10.23057/48. Moreover, we developed inspection process and guidelines for the automatically constructed data and performed a full inspection of the validation and testing data. The reliability of the inspected data was verified through the inter-annotator agreement measurement. Using our corpus, we trained and evaluated the BERT based transfer learning model to verify its reliability. Furthermore, we proposed new training methods that can improve the metadata extraction performance of Korean papers, and through these methods, we developed KorSciBERT-ME-J and KorSciBERT-ME-J+C models. The KorSciBERT-ME-J showed the highest performance with an F1 score of 99.36%, as well as robust performance in automatic metadata extraction from Korean academic papers in various formats.

Thermal aging and ultraviolet (UV) irradiation are used as methods to prepare samples of kraft paper spanning its full lifecycle within a high-voltage transformer, from new to end of life. The mechanical break strain is correlated with the degree of polymerization (DP), representing a progressive deterioration of mechanical properties during aging. Subsequent exposure to oil flow mimicking both normal plant operation and reclamation activities shows that aged paper exposed to high rates of flow experiences noticeable surface roughening. Despite this, no measurable erosion occurs even after long-term temperature/flow cycling in used mineral oil containing a notable particulate content. This indicates that kraft paper is unlikely to be eroded by normal reclamation activities, even in a severely aged asset. This confirms the validity of using this approach to extend plant life. There is a relative lack of research on the development of creepage discharge in aged oil-paper insulation subjected to AC-DC combined voltage in converter transformers. In this study, based on the physical and chemical properties of oil-paper, we propose a sphere-plate electrode model to study the creepage discharge parameters and characteristic spectra of aged oil-paper subjected to AC-DC combined voltage. The results show that the creepage discharge inception voltage of aged oil-paper is related to the AC voltage component of the AC-DC combined voltage. However, when the DC voltage component is 60 kV, the flashover phenomenon was found to occur in one of the severely aged samples before the AC voltage was applied. Despite being subjected to the same DC voltage, the flashover phenomenon did not occur in three other samples aged to different degrees. Large-amplitude discharges were found to appear earlier in the severely aged samples. At the same creepage discharge stage, as the aging time of the oil-paper increased, the number of large-amplitude discharges was found to rapidly increase, and the time interval between adjacent discharges was found to gradually decrease. At each stage of the creepage discharge, the small-amplitude discharge has a “hump” shaped distribution. The larger the DC voltage component, the shorter the endurance time of aged oil-paper, and the more severe the damage to the oil-paper. The DC voltage component was found to have an accelerating effect on the development of creepage discharge in aged oil-paper insulation.

Rapid increase in scholarly publications on the web has posed a new challenge to the researchers in finding highly relevant and important research articles associated with a particular area of interest. Even a highly relevant paper is sometimes missed especially for novice researchers due to lack of knowledge and experience in finding and accessing the most suitable articles. Scholarly recommender system is a very appropriate tool for this purpose that can enable researchers to locate relevant publications easily and quickly. However, the main downside of the existing approaches is that their effectiveness is dependent on priori user profiles and thus, they cannot recommend papers to the new users. Furthermore, the system uses both public and non-public metadata and therefore, the system is unable to find similarities between papers efficiently due to copyright restrictions. Considering the above challenges, in this research work, a novel hybrid approach is proposed that separately combines a Content Based Filtering (CBF) recommender module and a Collaborative Filtering (CF) recommender module. Unlike previous CBF and CF approaches, public contextual metadata and paper-citation relationship information are effectively incorporated into these two approaches separately to enhance the recommendation accuracy. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach, publicly available datasets were employed. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms the baseline approaches in terms of standard metrics (precision, recall, F1-measure, mean average precision, and mean reciprocal rank), indicating that the proposed approach is more efficient in recommending scholarly publications.

The existing plethora of document classification techniques exploits different data sources either from the content or metadata of research articles. Various journal publishers like Springer, Elsevier, IEEE, etc., do not provide open access to the content of research articles, whereas metadata is freely available there. Metadata like title, keyword, and abstract can serve as a better alternative to the content in various scenarios. In the current literature, researchers have assessed the role of some of the metadata individually. We believe that the collective contribution of metadata parameters can play a significant role in classifying research papers. This paper presents a comprehensive evaluation of the role of metadata, individually as well as in combinations to achieve the objective of research paper classification. Moreover, we have classified the research articles into ACM hierarchy root categories (e.g. general literature, hardware, software, etc.). In this comprehensive evaluation, we have assessed all the possible combinations of metadata features against different classifiers such as Random Forest, K Nearest Neighbor, and Decision Tree. The results of this research reveal that the title & keywords combination outperforms other combinations with an F-measure score of 0.88.

In this study, a flexible capacitive pressure sensor based on filter paper substrate is proposed. The electric double layer (EDL) structure was constructed through the introduction of ionic liquid (IL), and the pressure-sensing was realized by using the change of ion-electron interface contact. The paper-based iontronic pressure sensor possesses a high sensitivity of 221.9 kPa−1, which is hundreds of times higher than that of the capacitive pressure sensors with conventional parallel plate structure, as well as an ultra-low detection limit of 2 Pa. Researchers face difficulties in finding relevant papers to their research interest as the number of scientific publication is rapidly increasing on the web. Scientific paper recommenders have emerged as a leading solution to help researchers by automatically suggesting relevant and useful publications. Several approaches have been proposed on improving recommender systems. However, most existing approaches depend on priori user profiles, and thus they cannot recommend papers to new user. Furthermore, the existing approaches utilize non-public contextual information, and thus it cannot adequately find similarities between papers due to copyright restrictions. Also, the existing approaches consider only single level paper-citation relation to identify similarities between papers. Considering the above challenges, this paper presents a collaborative filtering based recommendation approach for scientific papers that does not depend on priori user profiles and which utilizes only public contextual information. Using citation context, we utilized 2-level paper-citation relations to find hidden associations between papers. The rational underlying this approach is that, two papers are co-occurred with same cited paper(s) and two papers are co-occurring with same citing paper(s) are significantly similar to some extent. To evaluate the performance of the proposed approach, publicly available datasets are used to conduct extensive experiments. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach has significantly outperforms the baseline approaches in terms of precision, recall, F1, mean average precision, and mean reciprocal rank, which are commonly used information retrieval metrics. The novelty of this study is that, with the proposed approach, researchers are able to find relevant and useful publications over the internet regardless of their previous research experiences and research area.

An electrical tree discharge model of multilayer insulation paper was prepared, and a voltage of 20 kV was used for electrical tree cultivation and initiation tests. Based on the microscopic image information and partial discharge (PD) information during the aging of the electrical tree, the development of electrical tree discharges between layers of paper comprising epoxy resin-impregnated paper insulation was studied. The results show that, by analysing PD information such as the discharge volume phase spectrum and the discharge repetition rate phase spectrum, the development of the electrical tree branch progresses in four stages: initial, growth, stagnation, and bursting. During the growth and stagnation stages, the main discharge paths of the electrical tree are mainly formed, and there are many filamentous fibres on the path edge. During the burst stage, more branches will be formed on the electrical tree, which will cause the greatest damage to the insulation. With the extension of the electrical tree path, the discharge magnitude and discharge times also increase. There are specific discharge patterns in different growth stages of the electrical tree, and the number of discharge events in each positive half-cycle is significantly greater than that in a negative half-cycle. Combining the microscopic image information and PD information during the aging of such an electrical tree, a theoretical basis for evaluating insulation state by PD monitoring is realised. The long-chain molecules of cellulose and epoxy resin break bonds and oxidise, which decompose into a large number of free radicals, monosaccharides, and other low-molecular-weight products.

The oil-paper insulation in power transformer is under a complicated environment, and there is little research on the combined effects of winding vibration-generated mechanical stress and thermal stress on the aging of insulating paper. To investigate the effects of combined mechanical-thermal stress on the aging properties of insulating paper, this paper carried out accelerated aging test using the as-designed mechanical-thermal stress combined aging oven in the aging environment at the temperature of 130 °C, and the mechanical stress intensities of 1 MPa, 1.5 MPa and 2 MPa. Besides, the degree of polymerization (DP), tensile strength, infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) tests were performed on the aging paper samples. The test results suggested that, the combined mechanical-thermal aging might be regarded as thermal aging with lower degradation activation energy; the DP and tensile strength of insulating paper markedly declined during the mechanical-thermal aging process. At the same time, mechanical stress promoted the destruction of glycosidic bond, intramolecular and intermolecular hydrogen bonds, and increased the insulating paper cracks and holes. Typically, the above factors accelerated the aging of insulating paper. Finally, an improved degradation rate equation for insulating paper with consideration of mechanical stress was put forward.

The explicitly numerical or well-defined correlations between the dielectrics responses (DRs) and dielectric essences of oil-impregnated paper (OIP) insulation have not been fully understood yet. As a result, it is rather difficult to quantitatively diagnose the critical insulation condition, like determining moisture content in insulation paper (MCP) of power equipment only using electrical-based techniques such as frequency domain spectroscopy (FDS). To obtain MCP value, from a new perspective of parametric study on the circuital DR equivalence of OIP insulation-extended Debye model (EDM), the present contribution introduces a novel approach by exploring the pattern when EDM parameters vary with MCP and temperatures T. Further, mathematical correlations are developed between sensitive R-C values and MCP-T values. On the above analysis, small-scale physical models of real-life transformer bushings were prepared as test samples. Their OIP condenser bodies were artificially absorbed different controlled quantities of moisture and conditioned at different temperatures to record corresponding FDS results. Then a hybrid genetic algorithm combined with the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm was proposed to estimate the EDM parameters by fitting the measured FDS data. Sensitive parameters therein were identified using subspectrum decomposition and formulated with MCP-T values so that a reliable moisture content estimation can be achieved once the testing temperature and FDS recordings of an insulation body are known.

The low frequency section of frequency domain spectroscopy (FDS) of oil-paper insu- lation system can effectively reflect the ageing state and moisture of the oil-immersed paper. Meanwhile, steady-state insulation resistance is the one of indexes for the condition of transformer. In actual measurement, these two both are time-consuming and poor accessibility, thereby restraining their field applications. Aim at this problem, this paper analyses the polarization process of the oil-paper insulation in transformer, and adopts a low frequency equivalent circuit model for the oil-paper insulation to characterize the polarization process at low frequency. The simulated annealing particle swarm optimization (SAPSO) algorithm is proposed to identify the parameters in equivalent circuit, which are affected by change of insulation state. Compared with the experimental results, the errors of the steady-state insulation resistance and the tan δ below 10-3 Hz, which are calculated by the identified parameters, are less than 2.5%. This method can avoid the influence from external environment and reduce the measurement time. The time and frequency domain parameters calculated can provide reference for the ageing assessment of oil-immersed paper.

This paper investigates the impact of institutes and papers over time based on the heterogeneous institution-citation network. A new model, IPRank, is introduced to measure the impact of institution and paper simultaneously. This model utilises the heterogeneous structural measure method to unveil the impact of institution and paper, reflecting the effects of citation, institution, and structural measure. To evaluate the performance, the model first constructs a heterogeneous institution-citation network based on the American Physical Society (APS) dataset. Subsequently, PageRank is used to quantify the impact of institution and paper. Finally, impacts of same institution are merged, and the ranking of institutions and papers is calculated. Experimental results show that the IPRank model better identifies universities that host Nobel Prize laureates, demonstrating that the proposed technique well reflects impactful research.

This article adds more information to the problem of natural ester use as an electroinsulating fluid in cellulose paper-oil systems, e.g., for use in power transformers. An accelerated thermal aging (120, 140 and 160 °C) of samples consisting of cellulose paper (transformerboard), a treated natural ester (filtered, basic Al2O3, 0.53% DBPC), a copper plate and moisture was studied. Research was especially focused on the impact of moisture on the aging of the above system. Samples with three different oil moisture levels (80, 143 and 305 ppm water content) were subjected to thermal aging to display the change in a selection of properties (tanδ, acid number, water content). For a study of the polarization effects, broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) was performed to observe the complex permittivity and conductivity dependencies on the temperature and frequency (±30 °C, 0.01-107 Hz). Havriliak-Negami (H-N) diagrams were used to further understand the results. The degradation products during thermal aging were recognized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Hydrolysis and hydrogenation occurred in the insulating system with a natural ester aged by elevated temperatures, which is in contrast to CO2 formation in the case of electric aging. The results showed an increase in the acid number, dissipation factor, and number of hydrolysis and hydrogenation products. Furthermore, changes in polarization were observed as a consequence of the thermal aging of paper-natural ester insulation system with the presence of copper and moisture.

Trap plays an important role in the charge transportation of three-layer oil-paper and the investigation of trap parameters at different degradation degree is of great significance for further research of the partial discharge (PD) mechanism. This article considers the turn-to-turn structure of on-board traction transformer. A defect model of three-layer oil-paper insulation was designed for PD test. The PD degradation samples are selected from the inception of PD to the breakdown of PD to study the characteristics of surface potential decay on degradation samples by using isothermal surface potential decay method. Given that, the trap distribution at different degradation stages was calculated and its influence on PD characteristics was investigated. The result shows that AC fluctuation voltages caused by inter-harmonic has a great influence on PD distribution, surface charge distribution and trap distribution. With the increase of degradation, the decay rate of surface potential increases and the decay rate of AC fluctuation voltages is larger than that pure AC. And also, the number of shallow trap with AC fluctuation voltages is larger than that with pure AC. The rate of free charge increases with the number of shallow trap increasing. More free electrons involves in the process of PD, accelerating the aging rate of three-layer oil paper samples. Therefore, it can be concluded that surface charge and trap distribution are helpful to clarify PD mechanism.

The oil-paper insulation system is widely used for the insulation purposes of power transformers as a result of its ability to withstand high thermal and electrical stresses. The presence of a gas cavity between impregnated papers layer is a serious problem. When localized breakdown takes place within this cavity, partial discharge (PD) occurs and ages the rest of the insulation system. This aging phenomenon declines the expected life time of the insulation system and subsequently the life time of the power transformers. Dissolved gas analysis is a recommended technique that is used in order to assess the state of the insulation system inside the transformers. In this paper, PD is recorded in the case of gas cavity presence between the layers of the impregnated papers under the effect of AC and DC voltage stress. This record is extended from the instance of PD inception until the breakdown of the whole insulation system. Furthermore, the concentration of the gases that dissolve in the insulating oil due to the aging of the impregnated paper is measured eight times during the record of the PD. Finally, the degradation of the insulating papers is studied optically through the use of a microscope at different stages of the aging test. Depending on PD measurements, dissolved gas analysis (DGA) results, and the optical study of the paper aging, the evolution of the aging of oil-paper insulation system as a result of internal PD is declared when AC and DC voltage stresses are applied. It is obtained that the aging evolutionary process totally differs with the alteration of the applied voltage.

Insulated tubular busbar is a new type of current-carrying equipment with excellent performance. However, the research on this equipment is insufficient because of the short application and the lack of technical digestion, which has resulted in many accidents. In this paper, the full-scale model of epoxy-impregnated-paper insulated tubular busbar with bubble defects was designed and produced, its electrical breakdown process was investigated by withstand voltage test. In the experiment, the failure mode of breakdown caused by gas expansion was found for the first time. The research showed that the electrical-mechanical breakdown process could be divided into two stages: gas increase stage and breakdown threshold stage. The research also obtained the characteristics and the change criterions of the two stages. The gas in the bubble defects generated from epoxy decomposition which caused by partial discharge. When the gas pressure exceeds the critical fracture toughness of the bubble defects wall, the unstable crack extension occurs, therefore, improving the ability about resistance to partial discharge of epoxy resin or improving the fracture toughness of epoxy resin by modifying would enhance the breakdown performance of insulated tubular busbar. The result also has reference significance for other epoxy-impregnated-paper insulated electrical equipment.

In paper production, a jumbo reel is cut into multiple intermediate rolls, and each intermediate roll is then sheeted as finished goods. This problem is called a cutting stock problem and is proven to be NP-hard. The objective is to minimize material waste or trim loss from all the cuttings. In the case that any intermediate roll is not entirely used for its associated order, the intermediate roll itself could turn to be a dead stock. We use the concept of universal sizes of intermediate rolls to eliminate the dead stock. A pre-defined number of universal sizes of intermediate rolls is to be used to serve all the orders. The problem is solved using Reinforcement Artificial Bee Colony algorithm with Integer Linear Programming subroutine. This proposed approach is then tested with a set of 1,055 orders and 127 different sizes of sheet papers from a paper manufacturer. The results reveal that our method outperforms other algorithms. Our method offers the total trim loss of 3.51%, compared to the trim loss reported by the industry of at least 5%. This approach not only reduces the number of partially cut rolls, but also decreases the number of the jumbo reels needed to serve all the orders. Therefore, both the inventory cost and material cost can be saved.

This paper presents a broadband, simple, re-useable and low-cost approach for noninvasive sweat monitoring using a passive microwave circuit and a cellulose filter paper as a superstrate. The proposed sensor is composed of filter paper with the ability to absorb the sample liquid under test (LUT) placed on top of a coplanar waveguide (CPW) transmission line. Various samples of sodium chloride (NaCl) solutions with concentrations in the range of 0.01-2 mol/L and models of artificial sweat are used to test the proposed sensor. The difference in transmission coefficient (S21) between dry and wet states is used to determine the concentrations of tested solutions in the band of 1-6 GHz. The sensor detects concentrations as low as 0.01 mol/L (0.58 g/L) and quantities as low as 137 μL with a maximum sensitivity of 46.7 dB/g/L. The proposed sensor presents a simple approach to sample and characterize liquids with enhanced sensitivity and consistent performance using microwave signals.

The total/partial oil change treatment can affect the furfural partitioning in oil-paper-pressboard insulation, resulting in poor accuracy of furfural analysis. Moreover, due to the high cost of total oil change, partial oil change is more practical during transformer operation. This paper investigates the furfural partitioning in the oil-paper-pressboard insulation under partial oil change conditions. First, the initial furfural partitioning equation with non-oil change is proposed based on the obtained furfural content in oil, paper, and pressboard. Then, the modified furfural partitioning model under partial oil change condition is established by introducing a correction factor. Moreover, a preliminary correction scheme for the furfural partitioning model considering the influence of moisture and acid is provided. Finally, furfural content in oil-Kraft paper and oil-thermally upgraded Kraft (TUK) paper insulation are discussed, and results indicate that the proposed modified furfural partitioning model is not suitable for the oil-TUK paper insulation. Viscometric Degree of Polymerization (DPv or DP for short) is a well-established method used in the transformer industry to track degradation of the paper insulation used inside transformers. The DP method works well for both new, unprocessed paper, and for aged paper. But in recent years it has become an established fact that there are unclear issues related to measurements of DP on new paper after factory drying. This phenomenon has been observed for different paper types, paper dried using different drying methods, different types of pulp and measurements made at different laboratories. Cigré has recently published a reference paper on the subject [1], written by experts from different transformer manufacturers, paper manufacturers, independent laboratories and utilities. It is further noted in Cigré brochure 738 (WG D1.53) that at times, new paper after factory drying does not dissolve well in the Cuen solution used for DP measurement. This difficulty introduces tremendous uncertainties in the average DP numbers reported by laboratories for such papers. In forensic document analysis, the authenticity of a document must be properly checked in the context of suspected forgery. Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI) is a non-invasive way of detecting fraudulent papers in a multipage document. The occurrence of a forged paper in a multi-page document may have a substantial difference from rest of the papers in its age, type, color, texture, and so on. Each pixel in an HSI data can be used as the material fingerprint for the spatial point it corresponds to. Hence, hyperspectral data of paper samples made of the same substance have similar characteristics and can be grouped into a single cluster. Similarly, paper samples made of different substances have different spectral properties. This paper relies on this heuristic and proposes a tensor based clustering framework for hyperspectral paper data, with an application to detect the forged papers in multi-page documents. Information embedded in the hyperspectral patches of the papers to be clustered is arranged into individual lateral slices of a third-order tensor in this framework. Further, this work employs the self-expressiveness property of submodules and an objective function is formulated to extract self-expressive representation tensor with low multirank and f-diagonal structure. Objective function of the proposed method incorporates $l_{\frac {1}{2}}$ -induced Tensor Nuclear Norm (TNN) and $l_{\frac {1}{2}}$ regularization to impart better low rankness and f-diagonal structure to the representation tensor. Experimental results of the proposed method were compared to the state-of-the-art subspace clustering approaches. The results demonstrate improved performance of the proposed method over the existing clustering algorithms.

Currency recognition has always been a troublesome task for blind and visually impaired people (BVIP). The problem is more severe in developing countries such as India, where there is still a lack of robust currency recognition systems. BVIP primarily relies on size variations and patterns such as intaglio printings for recognizing the underlying currency denominations. Most of the current Indian legal tenders resemble in size, thus making the identification process more strenuous. Also, the engraved patterns are not as distinctive as BVIP standards, and they fade over time. For an automated paper currency recognition system, issues such as folded or partial views, uneven illumination, and background clutter make it non-trivial and challenging. This paper ventures to present an end-to-end and robust framework for assisting BVIP in recognizing the Indian paper currency denomination. This paper presents a lightweight network, IPCRNet, useful in a resource-constrained environment such as low/medium level smartphones. The proposed network is based on Dense connection, Multi-Dilation, and Depth-wise separable convolution layers. Additionally, we congregated one of the most diversified Indian paper currency image dataset with more than 50,000 images belonging to almost all denominations in circulation. A customized and publically available android application, “Roshni-Currency recognizer”, has also been introduced. The experimental results on multiple datasets demonstrate the superiority of the proposed model. IPCRNet improves the classification accuracy by more than 2% on the proposed dataset compared to the state-of-the-art networks.

In this era, research and development are becoming a continuous and accelerating process because technology changes rapidly with a short lifecycle. As a result, various methodologies are being developed to monitor these rapidly changing research trends; In particular, clustering method-related studies in science and technology documents are being developed with a variety of approaches. However, previous studies on document clustering methods focus on a specific field or language but do not take into consideration certain important pieces of information in science and technology documents. Therefore, this study proposes an embedding methodology that uses important content from scientific and technical documents. We took into consideration the importance of information containing core structures in science and technology documents and proposed a clustering methodology that analyzes structured and unstructured data, such as textual information, author information, and citation information. The proposed method combines both textual and structural data from the paper, using a method that focuses on screening important information by sections in science and technology documents. Then, Girvan-Newman clustering and Louvain clustering models are applied to generate embedding vectors and show evaluation results through the clustering indices. As a practical example, we applied the proposed methodology using paper data from the field of hydrogen cell vehicles. The results of this study will be effective in identifying gaps in technology for new technological development, identifying technology trends, and presenting directional information for future technology development.

This paper presents the prediction of aging state of oil impregnated insulating Kraft paper using textural properties. Under conditions of prolonged thermal stress, the insulating capacity of Kraft paper decreases due to carbonization and degradation of cellulose. To analyze these effects, a new accelerated aging kit is developed for the experiments. Four groups of samples are collected, and the morphology is examined. Texture feature is extracted for the samples using normalization and Gray-Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM). Supervised (Support Vector Machine (SVM)) and unsupervised (K-means) machine intelligence methods are trained to classify images based on the feature. In addition, new samples are checked for feasibility of the prediction of aging state. The calculated training accuracy of SVM is 92.67%, and for k-means is 95.0%, on the other hand, the testing accuracy of SVM is 91.0%, and for k-means is 92.6%. Therefore, this machine intelligence-based methodology using image features is effective in classifying the aging state of the Kraft Insulating Paper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Moisture content and aging of oil-paper insulation are two important factors that cause deterioration of the insulation performance of power transformers. The water molecules and aging products are polar, which affects the dielectric response characteristics of the insulation system. Currently, the dielectric response testing technology has realized non-destructive evaluation of the moisture content of transformer insulation. However, the changes in the dielectric response caused by aging products are easily concealed by the influence of moisture, which makes the diagnostic technology ineffective for use in the evaluation of the aging of the oil-paper system. In order to avoid drawback, a new method utilizing frequency domain dielectric spectroscopy (FDS) and the water balance characteristics of the oil-paper insulation is proposed in this paper to evaluate the aging state of oil-paper insulation. The aging of oil-paper insulation will affect the water balance between oil and paper. In this paper, the experimental studies have shown that the water distribution coefficient between oil and paper and the degree of polymerization (DP) of the insulating paper shows a significant linear relationship. Accordingly, in this paper, FDS curves were used to evaluate the moisture content in the insulating paper, oil samples were taken to measure the moisture content in oil, and then the ratio of moisture content in oil and paper were calculated as the aging characteristic parameter. The linear relationship between the characteristic parameter and DP was used to evaluate the aging state of oil-paper insulation. The feasibility of the proposed method is preliminarily verified using oil-paper insulation samples at different aging states and with different moisture levels in the laboratory.

When the inner insulation of oil-impregnated paper bushing breaks down in service, gases decomposed by oil and paper may cause an explosion. The explosion of bushing occurs from time to time because of the lack of an effective monitoring method. In order to provide an effective online monitoring method for the bushing to avoid explosion, this paper presents a method to monitor the PD defect in bushing by measuring the inner pressure of bushing. In this paper, the relationship of variation between characteristic gases content and inner pressure is studied, the effect of inner temperature on inner pressure is analyzed and the method for reducing this effect is also presented, and the monitoring method is proved to be useful by PD tests on a real bushing. The results show that the inner pressure increases obviously due to the generation of characteristic gases by internal discharge in oil-impregnated paper bushing, and the pressure increases with the deterioration of the discharge; although the inner pressure has a great influence on the inner pressure, the influence can be reduced or eliminated greatly by the method of common-mode rejection. According to the results, the internal discharge defect of the oil-impregnated paper bushing can be detected by monitoring the pressure, and the bushing explosion can be avoided.

The aging of the transformer oil-paper insulation distributes spatially, which results in changes in paper resistivity in different regions. This paper establishes an iterative inversion algorithm using the finite element method to calculate the oil-immersed paper resistivity in different regions of a transformer. This algorithm sets the transformer dielectric loss factor tan δ at low frequency, the dielectric parameters of the transformer oil as inputs and the oil-immersed paper resistivity as output. The resistivity obtained from inversion can be used as a reference to access the insulation state of the oil-paper insulation. This paper aims at achieving the nondestructive detection of the partial state of the oil-paper insulation.

Globally, the recommendation services have become important due to the fact that they support e-commerce applications and different research communities. Recommender systems have a large number of applications in many fields, including economic, education, and scientific research. Different empirical studies have shown that the recommender systems are more effective and reliable than the keyword-based search engines for extracting useful knowledge from massive amounts of data. The problem of recommending similar scientific articles in scientific community is called scientific paper recommendation. Scientific paper recommendation aims to recommend new articles or classical articles that match researchers' interests. It has become an attractive area of study since the number of scholarly papers increases exponentially. In this paper, we first introduce the importance and advantages of the paper recommender systems. Second, we review the recommendation algorithms and methods, such as Content-based, collaborative filtering, graph-based, and hybrid methods. Then, we introduce the evaluation methods of different recommender systems. Finally, we summarize the open issues in the paper recommender systems, including cold start, sparsity, scalability, privacy, serendipity, and unified scholarly data standards. The purpose of this survey is to provide comprehensive reviews on the scholarly paper recommendation.

The volume of research articles in digital repositories is increasing. This spectacular growth of repositories makes it rather difficult for researchers to obtain related research papers in response to their queries. The problem becomes worse when a researcher with insufficient knowledge of searching research articles uses these repositories. In the traditional recommendation approaches, the results of the query miss many high-quality papers, in the related work section, which are either published recently or have low citation count. To overcome this problem, there needs to be a solution which considers not only structural relationships between the papers but also inspects the quality of authors publishing those articles. Many research paper recommendation approaches have been implemented which includes collaborative filtering-based, content-based, and citation analysis-based techniques. The collaborative filtering-based approaches primarily use paper-citation matrix for recommendations, whereas the content-based approaches only consider the content of the paper. The citation analysis considers the structure of the network and focuses on papers citing or cited by the paper of interest. It is therefore very difficult for a recommender system to recommend high-quality papers without a hybrid approach that incorporates multiple features, such as citation information and author information. The proposed method creates a multilevel citation and relationship network of authors in which the citation network uses the structural relationship between the papers to extract significant papers, and authors' collaboration network finds key authors from those papers. The papers selected by this hybrid approach are then recommended to the user. The results have shown that our proposed method performs exceedingly well as compared with the state-of-the-art existing systems, such as Google scholar and multilevel simultaneous citation network.

Paper-based strain sensors have attracted attention as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly approach to wearable electronic devices. This paper proposes a paper-based strain sensor created solely using hand-painting, which is a simple, equipment-free process utilized in green electronics. Commercial printing paper is coated with polydimethylsiloxane diluted with heptane, which provides moisture resistance and mechanical robustness while increasing the hydrophobicity of the surface. The electrodes and conduction channels are fabricated using a pencil for graphite deposition and a brush for the deposition of tin-doped indium oxide nanoparticles, respectively. With a gauge factor of 41.98 in tensile strain tests and 21.36 in compressive strain tests, our strain sensor exhibits a good sensitivity that is similar to that of previously reported paper-based sensors. We also demonstrate that our proposed strain sensor can be used as a weak motion detection device for humans and robots.

This study explores the method of applying surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) in diagnosing the aging stage of oil-paper insulation equipment in the power system, which provides access to the on-line mornitoring of electrical equipment. Oil-paper samples in different aging stages were obtained by accelerated aging experiments. Effective Raman signals of insulating oil were collected by using the self-made hexagonal sliver nano-plates SERS substrates and the self-assembled Raman detection platform. For the SERS data of oil-paper insulation samples, kernel entropy component analysis (KECA) was applied to extract the Raman spectral features and support vector machine (SVM) was used to recognize the the aging stage of oil-paper insulation. The results demonstrate that the KECA-SVM method exhibits a good diagnostic capacity and the recognition accuracy of the propsed method reached 81.43 % (57/70). In summary, a new spectral method is proposed to diagnose the aging stage of oil-paper insulation, which lays a foundation for the actual diagnosis of the aging condition in running oil-paper insulation equipment by Raman spectroscopy.

The accelerating rate of scientific publications makes it extremely difficult for researchers to find out the relevant papers and related works. Recommender systems that aim at solving the information overload problem have attracted lots of attention. However, existing paper recommendation works generally rely on the simple citation-ships between papers, which ignore the heterogeneity of the academic graphs. In this paper, we solve the personalized paper recommendation problem in the setting of heterogeneous information networks. A heterogeneous graph representation based recommendation method named HGRec is proposed. First, the author and paper profiles are constructed based on the extracted contents information. Second, we initialize the node vectors by employing the word-embedding technique. Third, we jointly update the node embeddings in the heterogeneous graph by proposing two meta-path based proximity measures. Finally, the paper recommendation is completed by calculating the similarity of the generated author and paper feature vectors. We present experiments on a real academic network, the DBLP network. The comparative results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed personalized recommendation approach compared to state-of-the-art methods.

Transformer insulation paper is a key indicator for transformer remaining operational life. Paper decomposition is evaluated using the degree of polymerization (DP) which calls for samples of insulation paper from operating transformers. Since collecting such paper samples is extremely difficult, other indicators have been used to indirectly reveal the DP value of insulation paper. This includes dissolved gases in transformer oil such as carbon oxides and hydrocarbon gases, furan compounds, methanol, ethanol, and moisture along with some oil characteristics such as interfacial tension. However, for the same oil sample, these individual parameters lead to different DP values. This is attributed to the lack of accuracy of the established mathematical and artificial intelligence models correlating DP with each of the above mentioned individual parameters. This paper presents a self-learning method to estimate the DP value of transformer insulation paper based on multiple transformer oil aging parameters. The proposed method comprises data processing, fuzzy c-means and linear regression. Results reveal that estimating the DP value based on multiple aging parameters is more accurate than estimating it using one single parameter as per the current practice. The proposed method not only helps to understand the correlation between multiple oil aging parameters and the DP value of paper insulation, but also promotes the establishment of more accurate life assessment models for power transformers based on these oil aging parameters.

Failures of bushing caused by corrosive sulfur has gradually appeared in recent years. Apart from copper and sulfur, certain amount of aluminum was also found both in oil and paper after disassembling. The corrosion mechanism of the aluminum foil and its effect on oil-paper insulation were unknown. In this study, series of sulfur corrosion experiments were taken to investigate the sulfur corrosion of aluminum foil. The results showed the aluminum foil could certainly be corroded in oil containing corrosive sulfur (DBDS). Thermal products of insulting paper triggered the corrosion by removing the alumina film on the surface. Then, the contact corrosion occurred between aluminum and DBDS. In addition, the mechanisms of corrosion products generation both in oil and on paper were studied. The corrosion products in oil was DBDS-Al(3,4) and that on paper was RCOOAln. It caused the decrease of electrical properties of oil-paper. Particularly, the dielectric loss of oil and paper were dramatically enhanced.

Oil-immersed insulation paper (OIP) bushing is one of the most important equipment in power transmission and distribution systems. Moisture is one of the most serious factors that affect the insulation status of OIP bushing. In this paper, the OIP bushing was assumed to be in a stable and simplicity condition, and then the transient moisture distribution of capacitor core and its effects on the electric field were studied. First, by dissecting a 110 kV OIP bushing, the specific sizes for modelling were obtained. Afterwards, a moisture diffusion model for OIP bushing was established based on COMSOL Multiphysics software, and it was also verified by moisture diffusion experiment. Then, the moisture distribution for different conditions were obtained and analyzed. Finally, a model for the electric field of OIP bushing was established, and then the effects of moisture on the electric field were studied.

Studying the moisture diffusion in non-oil-immersed insulation paper is helpful to optimize the drying process and improve the drying efficiency of oil-immersed equipment. Moisture diffusion factor (MDF) is the key parameter to describe the moisture diffusion in non-oil-immersed insulation paper. Thermal aging affects the moisture absorption capacity of insulation paper obviously, thus, this paper intends to modify the empirical expression of MDF by considering the effects of thermal aging. The transient moisture contents of non-oil-immersed insulation paper with different thicknesses were measured at 40 °C and 60 °C, respectively. Then, the experimental values of MDF were extracted, and the empirical expression of MDF was modified by considering the effects of thermal aging. Finally, the modified expression of MDF was verified. The following conclusion can be obtained: 1) the equilibrium time constant of non-oil-immersed insulation paper increases with thermal aging; 2) the moisture absorption rate of non-oil-immersed insulation paper decreases with thermal aging, and; 3) the modified expression of MDF is reasonable and effective.

Researchers from academia and the corporate-sector rely on scholarly digital libraries to access articles. Attackers take advantage of innocent users who consider the articles' files safe and thus open PDF-files with little concern. In addition, researchers consider scholarly libraries a reliable, trusted, and untainted corpus of papers. For these reasons, scholarly digital libraries are an attractive-target and inadvertently support the proliferation of cyber-attacks launched via malicious PDF-files. In this study, we present related vulnerabilities and malware distribution approaches that exploit the vulnerabilities of scholarly digital libraries. We evaluated over two-million scholarly papers in the CiteSeerX library and found the library to be contaminated with a surprisingly large number (0.3-2%) of malicious PDF documents (over 55% were crawled from the IPs of US-universities). We developed a two layered detection framework aimed at enhancing the detection of malicious PDF documents, Sec-Lib, which offers a security solution for large digital libraries. Sec-Lib includes a deterministic layer for detecting known malware, and a machine learning based layer for detecting unknown malware. Our evaluation showed that scholarly digital libraries can detect 96.9% of malware with Sec-Lib, while minimizing the number of PDF-files requiring labeling, and thus reducing the manual inspection efforts of security-experts by 98%.

Kevlar pulp treated with low-temperature plasma and nano cellulose fibrils (NCFs) have been introduced as reinforcements in the preparation for composite insulating paper with low relative permittivity, dielectric loss, good mechanical properties, and thermal stability. More polar groups of Kevlar fibers could be exposed after plasma treatment. Results showed that the relative permittivity of the composite paper containing 20% Kevlar pulp, 10% NCF, and 70% softwood pulp is decreased by 29.6% and the dielectric loss is decreased by 43.2% at 50 Hz, 25°, compared with the conventional paper formed by pure softwood pulp. The change was due to the introduction of Kevlar pulp with intrinsic low dielectric constant and loss, which decreases the whole polarizability of the paper. The mechanical properties of the composite paper became worse after introducing 20% Kevlar pulp. About 10% NCF can work as a mechanical reinforcement to compensate for the tensile and Yang's modulus loss. Scanning electron microscopy results showed that NCF could fill the void defects and improve the interface bonding of the fibers to enhance the paper mechanical properties. The composite paper also had better insulating and thermal properties than the conventional paper. It has been concluded that the Kevlar pulp/NCF/softwood pulp composite paper has the potential to replace the pure softwood paper for the application of high-voltage ac transformer insulation.

Music generation using deep learning has received considerable attention in recent years. Researchers have developed various generative models capable of imitating musical conventions, comprehending the musical corpora, and generating new samples based on the learning outcome. Although the samples generated by these models are persuasive, they often lack musical structure and creativity. For instance, a vanilla end-to-end approach, which deals with all levels of music representation at once, does not offer human-level control and interaction during the learning process, leading to constrained results. Indeed, music creation is a recurrent process that follows some principles by a musician, where various musical features are reused or adapted. On the other hand, a musical piece adheres to a musical style, breaking down into precise concepts of timbre style, performance style, composition style, and the coherency between these aspects. Here, we study and analyze the current advances in music generation using deep learning models through different criteria. We discuss the shortcomings and limitations of these models regarding interactivity and adaptability. Finally, we draw the potential future research direction addressing multi-agent systems and reinforcement learning algorithms to alleviate these shortcomings and limitations.

Evolutionary game dynamics is a combination of game theory and dynamical systems. Using dynamical theory, we investigate chaotic behavior in asymmetric Rock-Paper-Scissors games under imitative dynamics with two different populations. Our theoretical analysis and numerical simulations demonstrate that the dynamical system can give rise to chaotic behavior in zero-sum and positive-sum asymmetric games. However, chaos cannot occur in a negative-sum asymmetric game. In particular, the numerical simulations show that there is a limit cycle in a negative-sum asymmetric game.

The intent of this work is to evaluate the influence of cellulose insulation paper on gassing tendency of transformer oil under electrical discharge conditions. For comprehensive enumeration, insulation oil was thermally stressed at 115°C as per ASTM D 1934 with a controlled thermal aging history. The thermally aged oils were considered for gassing tendency evaluation as per ASTM D 6180 (5 hours, 10 kV AC) in the presence of cellulose. Different cellulose Kraft paper proportions including 0, 10, 20, and 30% of aged oil were introduced in to discharge cell. Different cellulose proportions and aging conditions were considered to understand the impact of cellulose while understanding the decomposition aspects of insulation. Diagnostic measurements with those including dissolved gas analysis, moisture, interfacial tension, turbidity, dissolved decay contents, acidity, and dissipation factor were performed before and after gassing tendency evaluation. It was found that, cellulose paper aids significantly in increasing dissolved gases and moisture in oil during electrical discharge. Importantly, diagnostic measurements have shown the ability of paper to absorb certain decomposition products during the discharge process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report our recent progress in quantitative aging assessment of the oil-impregnated-paper (OIP) equipment (i.e., degree of polymerization, DP) by near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). The NIRS database is built by incorporating 8 types of insulating paper and total 478 differently aged samples. We propose an improved PCA-RBF-NN model to address the nonlinear correlation between DP of insulating paper and spectra, and hence strengthening the prediction accuracy for field assessment. In the improved model, the principle component analysis (PCA) and the filtering layer are two essential procedures for eliminating the noises and unrelated information from the spectra. The field practices show that the improved PCA-RBF-NN model owns better performance than the classic PLS model and general RBF-NN model on the disassembled bushing (RMSE: 56 vs 109 vs 124) and transformer (RMSE: 50 vs 237 vs 244), respectively. The NIRS powered by the improved algorithm can provide a rapid solution to the aging condition assessment of the OIP power equipment in the field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The performance of oil-impregnated paper significantly affects the safety and reliability of transformers. Previous studies on water reducing the breakdown strength of oil-impregnated paper have been mainly due to increasing charge carriers and conductivity. However, the influence of water on the cellulose crystal structure of oil-impregnated paper is still not clear; in particular, its role on breakdown strength remains ambiguous. In this study, the AC breakdown strength and crystal structure of vegetable and mineral oil-impregnated paper with different moisture contents were investigated. The results show that with increasing moisture content, the cellulose crystallinity and crystal size increases linearly, while the breakdown strength decreases. The breakdown strength of vegetable oil-impregnated paper is higher than that of mineral oil-impregnated paper and is less affected by moisture. Herein, a model is proposed on the effects of water on the crystal structure of oil-impregnated paper and the correlation of breakdown strength with crystal structure is reported. Electrical power quality is a vital aspect when designing or assessing the operation of all modern power systems and forms an important part of the ongoing energy transition to more efficient and multi-vector systems. However, the ongoing proliferation and changing functionality of power electronic devices, coupled with new grid operating paradigms, such as renewable energy sources integration, microgrids, low-voltage dc distribution networks, and the large-scale integration of electric vehicles, present unique opportunities and challenges for grid operators the world over and require new assessment methods and fresh perspectives on the role of power quality.

The vast majority of power transformers have an insulation system consisting of both insulating mineral oil and Kraft paper. The principal oil degradation agents are oxygen and temperature, whereas the main mechanisms of insulating Kraft paper degradation are water and acids (acidic hydrolysis degradation), temperature (pyrolytic degradation), and oxygen (oxidative degradation). This paper addresses two key challenges toward an integrated forward error-correcting biosensor based on our previously reported self-assembled quick-response (QR) code. The first challenge involves the choice of the paper substrate for printing and self-assembling the QR code. We have compared four different substrates that includes regular printing paper, Whatman filter paper, nitrocellulose membrane and lab synthesized bacterial cellulose. We report that out of the four substrates bacterial cellulose outperforms the others in terms of probe (gold nanorods) and ink retention capability. The second challenge involves remote activation of the analyte sampling and the QR code self-assembly process. In this paper, we use light as a trigger signal and a graphite layer as a light-absorbing material. The resulting change in temperature due to infrared absorption leads to a temperature gradient that then exerts a diffusive force driving the analyte toward the regions of self-assembly. The working principle has been verified in this paper using assembled biosensor prototypes where we demonstrate higher sample flow rate due to light induced thermal gradients.

In this paper, a method of aging diagnosis under different oil-paper ratios is proposed by investigating the accelerated thermal aging data with different oil-paper ratios. Aged oil-paper insulation samples with oil-paper ratios of 10:1, 15:1 and 20:1 are obtained by accelerated thermal aging tests. The Raman spectra of the transformer oil samples are measured by a Raman spectrometer, and screened by random forest algorithm to extract the features. A modified model is established to correcting the features of the aged oil samples under the conditions of 15:1 and 20:1 oil-paper ratio to features under the condition of 10:1 oil-paper ratio. An grid search optimized support vector machine (SVM) classification model is established, and verified by the corrected features. Origami structures held promise for their flexibility, simultaneous responsiveness, and adaptability, yet they are vulnerable due to the hygroscopic property when exposed to the humid environments. However, the patterning of hydrophobic material along the design enhances the controllability of paper for self-folding to robotics locomotion. The capillary action of sprayed water molecules is localized through the number or sizes of hydrophilic channels defined by the printed wax patterns resulting in large deformation to form various 3D geometries. The patterned paper performed folding actuation with water and unfolding behavior with evaporation without being mechanically manipulated by external forces or moments. The paper actuators further enable the sequential self-folding along the multiple hinges for the cube and diamond structures. Advances in soft robotics for practical applications, the utilization of different swelling/shrinking properties with water and kirigami-inspired programmable structures interact with the lightweight and non-planar objects. The anisotropic properties of paper in response to water spraying combined with folding/unfolding deformations permit the fold-to-pop-up robots for biomimetic locomotion on the plane or water. With the rapid growth of scientific publications, research paper recommendation which suggests relevant research papers to users can bring great benefits to researchers. In this paper, we focus on the problem of recommending conference papers to the conference attendees. While most of the related existing methods depend on the content-based filtering, we propose a unified conference paper recommendation method named $CPRec$ , which exploits both the contents and the authorship information of the papers. In particular, besides the contents, we exploit the relationships between a user and the authors of a paper for recommendation. In our method, we extract several features for a user-paper pair from the citation network, the coauthor network, and the contents, respectively. In addition, we derive a user’s pairwise preference towards the conference papers from the user’s bookmarked papers in each conference. Furthermore, we employ a pairwise learning to rank model which exploits the pairwise user preference to learn a function that predicts a user’s preference towards a paper based on the extracted features. We conduct a recommendation performance evaluation using real-world data and the experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method.

Oil-paper insulation will inevitably endure impulse voltage with a superimposed dc voltage (superimposed voltage) because of introduced lightning or switching, which can induce charge accumulation and trigger flashover during the operation of a converter transformer. Temperature rise is also a nonnegligible factor that can significantly influence the performances of oil-paper insulation. This paper aims to reveal the effects of ambient temperature and superimposed voltage on surface charge and flashover behaviors in an oil-paper insulation system. Surface potential decay (SPD) experiments were performed under superimposed voltage with various polarity and amplitude combinations and at the temperature ranging from 20 °C to 80 °C. The results show that the initial surface potential and decay rate increase as the amplitude of the impulse voltage increases at 20 °C. The initial surface potential declines, and the process of SPD is accelerated at higher temperatures because of the increased concentration of shallow traps. Subsequently, flashover tests were conducted under superimposed voltage. It is found that flashover occurs after applying superimposed voltages even with a rather low dc voltage. In addition, the dc voltage component is primarily responsible for flashover. Weibull results also indicate that it is prone to trigger flashover at higher temperatures, because thermal excitation helps more carriers to escape from deep traps and participate in the process of flashover. Accordingly, the insulation characteristics of oil-paper system can be significantly influenced by superimposed voltage and temperature, which should draw great concern among the power grid.

With the rapid growth of scientific publications, it is hard for researchers to acquire appropriate papers that meet their expectations. Recommendation system for scientific articles is an essential technology to overcome this problem. In this paper, we propose a novel low-rank and sparse matrix factorization-based paper recommendation (LSMFPRec) method for authors. The proposed method seamlessly combines low-rank and sparse matrix factorization method with fine-grained paper and author affinity matrixes that are extracted from heterogeneous scientific network. Thus, it can effectively alleviate the sparsity and cold start problems that exist in traditional matrix factorization based collaborative filtering methods. Moreover, LSMFPRec can significantly reduce the error propagated from intermediate outputs. In addition, the proposed method essentially captures the low-rank and sparse characteristics that exist in scientific rating activities; therefore, it can generate more reasonable predicted ratings for influential and uninfluential papers. The effectiveness of the proposed LSMFPRec is demonstrated by the recommendation evaluation conducted on the AAN and CiteULike data sets.

In recent years, the establishment of a substantial amount of academic groups on scientific social network has brought new opportunities for the collaboration among researchers. In this situation, conducting paper recommendation to these academic groups is of terrific necessity in that it can further facilitate group activities. However, when producing group recommendation, existing methods fail to make full use of the abundant group information, from which a great deal of valuable information can be inferred to facilitate the recommendation performance. In addition, those methods tend to assign an equal weight to each group member when aggregating their recommendations, which is unreasonable in practice. Although some improvements have been made to remedy this problem by assigning different weights to group members, they fail to take into account the reliabilities of group members. Therefore, a group-oriented paper recommendation method based on probabilistic matrix factorization and evidential reasoning (GPMF_ER) is proposed in this article to tackle these problems. More specifically, the group and paper content information are integrated into the probabilistic matrix factorization model to enhance the accuracy of individual recommendation. Afterward, evidential reasoning rule is introduced in the aggregation step to consider both the weights and reliabilities of group members. Methanol is regarded as an available indicator to analyze the aging condition of cellulose insulation. However, the diffusion mechanism of methanol molecules in the paper-oil insulation system is still unclear, since it cannot be explored by using only experiments. Given this issue, the molecular dynamics simulations were performed to investigate the diffusion mechanism of methanol molecules. In the current work, the mean square displacement of methanol during the diffusion process was calculated and analyzed, as well as its trajectory tracking. Then, the research on interaction energies and hydrogen bonds in paper/oil system were conducted. Finally, the effect of temperature on the diffusion of methanol molecules was also studied. Findings revealed that the diffusion of methanol in cellulose insulation is faster than that in insulating oil, besides, the presence of hydrogen bonds affects the diffusion rate of methanol molecules in cellulose insulation and insulating oil. Thus, the present findings could support the investigation of the diffusion mechanisms of methanol molecules, by which the aging condition evaluation of cellulose insulation could be also promoted.

The interest in developing and testing dielectric nanofluids for electrotechnical purposes has increased significantly in the last ten years. A number of works have been published reporting dielectric and thermal properties for these liquids that enhance those of conventional insulating fluids. Some authors propose that the application of dielectric nanofluids to transformer insulation could improve the reliability of transformers and open new possibilities for transformer design. However, this will not be feasible until thorough studies on the interaction of these materials with other elements of the transformer, specially the solid insulation, are carried out. In this work, the effect of the presence of nanoparticles on the dielectric response of oil and oil-paper insulation is analysed in laboratory conditions. Specimens have been prepared to emulate the insulation system of transformers and the dielectric response in the frequency domain of these specimens has been characterized. The dependence of nanoparticle concentration on the dielectric response has been analysed. Proposing physical mechanisms that explain the experimental results observed over the oil and the paper samples. Some conclusions are extracted in this work that may be of interest if nanofluids are considered as liquid insulation for transformers.

Objective: We propose a MATLAB-based tool to convert electrocardiography (ECG) waveforms from paper-based ECG records into digitized ECG signals that is vendor-agnostic. The tool is packaged as an open source standalone graphical user interface (GUI) based application. Methods and procedures: To reach this objective we: (1) preprocess the ECG records, which includes skew correction, background grid removal and linear filtering; (2) segment ECG signals using Connected Components Analysis (CCA); (3) implement Optical Character Recognition (OCR) for removal of overlapping ECG lead characters and for interfacing of patients’ demographic information with their research records or their electronic medical record (EMR). The ECG digitization results are validated through a reader study where clinically salient features, such as intervals of QRST complex, between the paper ECG records and the digitized ECG records are compared. Results: Comparison of clinically important features between the paper-based ECG records and the digitized ECG signals, reveals intra- and inter-observer correlations of 0.86–0.99 and 0.79–0.94, respectively. The kappa statistic was found to average at 0.86 and 0.72 for intra- and inter-observer correlations, respectively. Conclusion: The clinically salient features of the ECG waveforms such as the intervals of QRST complex, are preserved during the digitization procedure. Clinical and Healthcare Impact: This open-source digitization tool can be used as a research resource to digitize paper ECG records thereby enabling development of new prediction algorithms to risk stratify individuals with cardiovascular disease, and/or allow for development of ECG-based cardiovascular diagnoses relying upon automated digital algorithms.

The long-term operation of dry-type transformer bushings at high temperatures can impact the performance of their primary insulation material. This article presents an experimental study of the effect of thermal aging time on electrical treeing in the epoxy resin-impregnated paper. The experimental results show that the electrical treeing pattern along the middle path of the electric field and the interlayer creepage along the average direction of the electric field are closely related to the aging time. Under the effect of thermal aging at 150 °C, the tree-starting voltage of epoxy resin-impregnated paper tends to increase and decrease as the aging time increases. An analysis and discussion of the test results in conjunction with scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) tests suggest that the destruction of the cross-linked network of the epoxy resin-impregnated paper at 150 °C is a fundamental reason for the significant decrease in the material’s tree-starting voltage and the change in electrical treeing morphology and interlayer creepage. This paper presents an experimental study on the physicochemical properties of rice oil, peanut oil, corn oil and Kraft paper immersed in these oils in the presence of antioxidants (butylated hydroxytoluene, tertiary butyl hydroquinone and Naugalube¯ 750). The experiments are performed on new and aged conditions. Ageing of oils is carried at 115 °C for 96 hours while Kraft paper is aged in oils at 130 °C for 164 hours. Both closed and open cup methods are used for ageing. The results show that ageing insignificantly affects the breakdown voltage, but markedly increases the acid number and the viscosity of the vegetable oils. The combination of tertiary butyl hydroquinone and either butylated hydroxytoluene or Naugalube¯ 750 slightly increases the breakdown voltage, but significantly raises the oxidation stability of the vegetable oils. This results in a reduction in the viscosity and the acid number of the vegetable oils. Moisture significantly affects the breakdown voltage of both vegetable and mineral oil. High moisture content results in low breakdown voltage. The results also show that ageing insignificantly affects the breakdown voltage, but markedly decreases the tensile strength of oil-impregnated paper. Although the presence of antioxidants does not increase the breakdown voltage of aged paper, these additives slow down the ageing process. Accurate modeling and simulation of electric field transients in HVDC cables is an important support to optimize insulation system design and to evaluate the influence of voltage transients and steady-state conditions on accelerated ageing mechanisms and insulation reliability. Traditionally, field models considering time-independent permittivity and conductivity are used, but this approach neglects polarization mechanisms and charge trapping-detrapping phenomena. This article includes polarization dynamics in the field model and shows that its impact on transient electric field simulations in HVDC paper-insulated cables can be significant. A method is presented to infer the model parameters from experimental polarization and depolarization current measurements.

The heat dissipation factor of conventional epoxy impregnated paper bushings is a subject of concern due to the large quantities of power in a High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) system. The present work deals with the selection of better insulation as a replacement to the conventional resin impregnated material employing nano-hexagonal-Boron Nitride and nano-hexagonal-Boron Nitride added with nano-cellulose-fiber. The bushing of the converter transformer is designed using the Finite Element Method (FEM), and the electrothermal analysis is performed at the loaded working condition. Besides, numerous optimization schemes are also presented for adapting the structure of the thermal conductor enclosed in the inner conductor. The electrothermal performances of the above materials with the optimized structure are compared and an advanced scheme is proposed. Further, the results obtained from the designed system are employed in the form of an Artificial Neural Network to simplify the process of thermal computation characterized by the selected scheme. The internal parameters of the neural network are tuned implementing a hybrid amalgamation of Particle Swarm optimization - Grey Wolf Optimiser and the performance is compared against the actual values. The supremacy of the implemented algorithm is justified by a comparative analysis with other well-established algorithms using various statistical parameters.

This paper investigates the behavior of interface charges between oil and oil immersed paper insulations in unaged and aged samples. Combined accelerated thermal and electrical aging experiments of oil immersed paper insulations are conducted to obtain aged oil and aged paper samples. The interface charges between oil and paper samples with different aging status are measured with the Pulsed Electro-acoustic (PEA) method. Zeta potentials in samples with different aging status are determined. It is shown that the amount of interface charge increases with the aging duration, and does not follow the prediction of Maxwell-Wagner-Sillars (MWS) law. This is explained in terms of the increase of the interface charge barrier due to the effect of electric double layer. It is proposed that interface charge may act as an optional characterization parameter for the assessment of oil immersed paper insulations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Numbers of citations of outstanding conference papers (OCPs) of IEEE Nuclear and Space Radiation Effects Conferences (NSRECs) from 1966 to 2017 are compared with citations of the most highly cited papers (HCPs) of the corresponding special issues of the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON NUCLEAR SCIENCE (TNS), as well as average numbers of citations and cumulative $h$ index, $h_{\mathrm {cum}}$ , for all TNS papers published in the same year. 85% of NSREC OCPs are cited at a higher rate than the average for all TNS articles in that year. 55% of NSREC OCP citation totals are higher than $h_{\mathrm {cum}}$ for TNS in that year; these rank among the ~8% most highly cited TNS papers for that year. In ~10% of cases, the NSREC OCP is also the most HCP. Similarly high citation impact is found for papers nominated as candidates for OCPs. Radiation effects papers published in annual NSREC special issues comprise a significant fraction of all TNS articles cited $h_{\mathrm {cum}}$ times or more. These results support the use of $h_{\mathrm {cum}}$ as a metric of citation impact in this work and show that the NSREC OCP process generally meets awards criteria guidelines for impact. Potential reasons for variations in citation rates are discussed, and recommendations are provided to enhance the awards process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The generation and distribution of furfural are significantly affected by moisture content in the insulating paper. However, the diffusion mechanism of furfural under moisture effect is not clear, hence, this study investigates the effect of moisture on the diffusion characteristics of furfural by combining macro experiment and micro molecular dynamics simulation. The simulation results demonstrate that the increased moisture content in paper accelerates the diffusion of furfural from paper to oil, which is also proved by the experimental data. Then, the results of interaction energy analysis indicate that the increase of moisture enhances the van der Waals force between oil and furfural. The present findings are expected to improve the theoretical level of furfural analysis, which will facilitate the aging evaluation of the transformer insulating paper based on furfural. Furfural content in oil is widely accepted as an effective parameter to mirror aging of insulation paper. However, pressboards are also abundant in transformers, which are always neglected in furfural analysis. Different masses of insulation paper and pressboard produce different amounts of furfural during the aging process. Thus, the furfural content in oil may differ in systems with different oil-paper-pressboard mass ratios. To address this problem, accelerated thermal aging experiments and furfural equilibrium experiments with different oil-paper-pressboard mass ratio systems were conducted under laboratory conditions. Furfural contents in oil, paper, and pressboard were measured. In a simplified oil-paper system, the furfural content in oil differs in systems with different oil-paper mass ratios. Further analysis shows the furfural amount produced by 1 g insulation paper is the same with good repeatability in groups with different mass ratios. Different oil-paper mass ratios change the distribution coefficient of furfural between oil and paper, and an increase in the mass of insulation paper leads to more furfural remaining in the insulation paper. The pressboards in field transformers produce little furfural during the aging process, but absorb part of the furfural from oil, which decreases the furfural content in oil. Therefore, more pressboard in an oil-paper-pressboard system indicates lower furfural content in oil. An increase in insulation paper in the oil-paper-pressboard system causes a decrease in the effect of pressboard on furfural content in oil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Novel designs of paper-based bandstop frequency-selective surfaces (FSSs) are presented in this article. The characteristics of the paper-based honeycomb structure are investigated first. One folded dipole resonator with first-order bandstop response is analyzed and further printed on the sidewalls of the honeycomb structure accordingly. A second-order response with two cascade FSSs is proposed with controllable bandwidth by the coupling coefficient of the resonators with the aid of the equivalent circuit model. Two paper-based FSS samples were fabricated and measured to demonstrate the validity of the proposed design strategies. Benefiting from the merits of lightweight and strong mechanical properties, the proposed paper-based FSS is a potential candidate for application in radar systems and aircraft. Flexible In2O3 nanowire transistors gated by microporous SiO2-based solid electrolytes are fabricated on paper substrates at room temperature. Low-voltage (1.0 V) operation of these devices is realized owing to the large electric-double-layer capacitance of (1.73 μF/cm2 at 20 Hz) of the microporous SiO2 solid electrolytes, which were deposited at room temperature. The subthreshold swing, current on/off ratio, and field-effect mobility of the paper-based nanowire transistors are estimated to be 74 mV/decade, 1.7×106, and 218.3 cm2/V·s, respectively. These low-voltage paper-based nanowire transistors show promise for use in portable flexible paper electronics and low-cost portable sensors.
