In this article, an approach is proposed for the online diagnostic analysis of power electronic converters utilizing real-time, probabilistic digital twinning. Under this approach, a digital twin (DT) of a power converter is defined as a real-time, probabilistic simulation model with stochastic (random) variables, developed using generalized polynomial chaos expansion. The DT models are partitioned in perspective of control layers for power converter subsystems in the approach, with emphasis on the application and converter control layers. Real-time executed solvers of these divided probabilistic DT models are embedded into power converter controllers running on field programmable gate array (FPGA) computing devices. Using a monitoring system, the real-time probabilistic DTs at each control layer and the corresponding physical twins of the power converter are compared by the controllers to determine if the power converter is operating within probable behavior. Knowing the large computational cost of probabilistic modeling, the resource usage and timing of real-time DT solvers on modern FPGAs is reported for common power electronic converter topologies, showing the approach is feasible and able to perform probabilistic real-time simulation of smaller power converters in perspective of application and converter control layers using ≤ 2 μs time steps, with as low as 70 ns steps; while staying embeddable within FPGA-based controllers. To highlight the capabilities of the proposed approach, a case study is presented using a probabilistic DT in the application layer controller of a pair of converters to comparatively monitor their behavior and corresponding controller action under hardware-in-the-loop testing. The article proposes a computationally efficient and robust method for estimating impulse or frequency response in the context of black-box multiple-input-multiple-output linear model identification of large power systems from simulations. The proposed approach is validated in conjunction with two realization algorithms – ERA method that is based on the established Ho-Kalman procedure for minimal realization, and the relatively new Loewner matrix based method. Practical aspects of identification in presence of numerical noise and nonlinearities are discussed. Study cases presented in the article include a linear model equivalent of a large-scale power system and the full-scale nonlinear transient model of the Eastern Interconnection. Voltage stability assessment on a deterministic direction of loading variation may provide misleadingly high values of voltage stability margin due to uncertainties in load forecast. On the other hand, by disregarding loading forecast information and computing the worst case scenario, we may obtain unrealistic and very conservative margin values. This paper proposes a new voltage stability index that takes place between these two approaches. In this proposal, a set of credible loading variation directions is considered and the closest bifurcation point is determined within this set. A fast method for computation of this index is also proposed. The method is able to detect both saddle-node and limit-induced bifurcations. The operational security of power systems for wind farm (WF) integration becomes more important as the penetration of wind generation increases. A WF may contain hundreds of wind turbines (WT) and thus the power system simulations based on the complex model of a WT consume much time. This article proposes an equivalent WF model with the frequency-regulation function. The main research works include the establishment of the generic model of a WT, the development of single- and multimachine equivalent models for a large WF, the clustering of WTs based on the developed nonlinear wake model and the fuzzy C-means (FCM) clustering algorithm, the integration of the frequency-regulation function into the equivalent WF model, and the validation of the developed equivalent WF model by various operating scenarios. The results demonstrate that the proposed multimachine equivalent method based on the FCM clustering provides a more accurate model than a single-WT equivalent model. Consequently, the research results provide a solution for simulating a large-scale wind power integration, providing efficient, accurate, and fast steady-state and dynamic analyses. This paper proposes a time-domain method to calculate the fault response in multiterminal dc (MTdc) grids and the performance of hybrid dc breakers. The proposed method, based on traveling waves: 1) provides a sound representation of fault performance by considering all created traveling waves; 2) introduces a new approach to estimate the reflection coefficients; and 3) provides an approximation of the worst case fault location. Then, based on the analytical results, three parameters of the hybrid dc circuit breaker, i.e., current limiting reactor, arrester rated voltage, and time delay are optimally selected with respect to maximum overcurrent, maximum overvoltage, fault clearance time, and energy absorption in arresters through multiobjective optimization. Accuracy and performance of the proposed method are evaluated and verified by time-domain simulation studies in the power systems computer aided design (PSCAD)/electromagnetic transients including DC (EMTDC) environment using frequency-dependent models. Parameter identification facilitates the improvement of the accuracy of power system simulation. However, for complex models of electrical equipment, it is impossible to simultaneously identify all the parameters. Inaccurate values of the nontarget parameters (NTPs) will affect the identification accuracy of the target parameters (TPs). However, no suitable methods are available in the parameter identification process to assess and handle this adverse impact. Therefore, a probabilistic preassessment method (PPM) is proposed to assess the possible identification accuracy of the TPs when the NTPs are inaccurate. PPM can provide more useful quantitative information than traditional sensitivity analysis for selecting the disturbance form, the observation variable, and the TPs that can be accurately identified. Then, a statistical identification process (SIP) is proposed to eliminate the dependence of the traditional parameter identification method on accurate NTPs. In SIP, parameter identification is repeated by using random values of the NTPs. Then, the mean value of the high-probability identification results is selected as the final result. Some of the identification results can be adjusted according to the PPM result to further improve the accuracy. The proposed methods were successfully used to identify the parameters of a two-mass drive train model of a DFIG wind turbine generator under the assumption that the generator and controller parameters are unknown. An efficient and accurate multi-scale induction machine model for simulating diverse transients in power systems is developed and validated. Voltages, currents, and flux linkages are described through analytic signals that consist of real in-phase and imaginary quadrature components, covering only positive frequencies of the Fourier spectrum. The stator is modeled in the abc phase coordinates of an arbitrary reference frame whose rotating speed is adjusted by a simulation parameter called shift frequency. When the reference frame is stationary at a zero shift frequency, then the model processes instantaneous signals to yield natural waveforms. When the reference frame is set to rotate at the synchronous frequency of the electric network, then the Fourier spectra of the analytic signals are shifted by this synchronous frequency to become dynamic phasors that allow for efficient envelope tracking. The shift frequency can be adapted during simulation. For any rotor position and independent of the variation of the magnetizing inductances with saturation, the induction machine model appears as a Norton current source with constant inner admittance in the abc phase domain to support the integration with simulators that represent the electric network in the abc phase domain. This paper emphasizes the importance of including unbalanced distribution systems for voltage stability studies in power systems. The paper aims to: discuss the various simulation methods for power system analysis; highlight the need for modeling unbalanced distribution system for accurate load margin assessment; demonstrate the influence of net-load unbalance (NLU) on voltage stability margin (VSM). We also share a T&D co-simulation interface with commercial power system solvers. The distribution system is evolving rapidly with high proliferation of distributed energy resources (DERs); these are not guaranteed to proliferate in a balanced manner and uncertainty resulting due to these DERs is well acknowledged. These uncertainties cannot be captured or visualized without representing the distribution system in detail along with the transmission system. We show the impact of proliferation of DERs in various 3-phase proportions on voltage stability margin through T&D co-simulation. We also study the impact of volt/VAR control on voltage stability margin. This analysis is only possible by representing the distribution system in detail through T&D co-simulation. Higher percentage of net-load unbalance (NLU) in distribution system aggravates the voltage stability margin of the distribution system, which can further negatively influence the overall voltage stability margin of the system. Low frequency electromechanical oscillations can pose a threat to the stability of power systems if not properly addressed. This paper proposes a novel methodology to damp these inter-area oscillations using loads, the demand side of the system. In the proposed methodology, loads are assigned to an aggregated cluster whose demand is modulated for oscillation damping. The load cluster control action is obtained from an optimal output feedback control (OOFC) strategy. The paper presents an extension to the regular OOFC formulation by imposing a constraint on the sum of the rows in the optimal gain matrix. This constraint is useful when the feedback signals are generator speeds. In this case, the sum of the rows of the optimal gain matrix is the droop gain of each load actuator. Time-domain simulations of a large-scale power system are used to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed control algorithm. Two different cases are considered: a power imbalance and a line fault. The simulation results show that the proposed controllers successfully damp inter-area oscillations under different operating conditions and with different clustering for the events considered. In addition, the simulations illustrate the benefit of the proposed extension to the OOFC that enable load to provide a combination of droop control and small signal stability augmentation. This paper proposes a novel non-iterative method to solve power system differential algebraic equations (DAEs) using the differential transformation, which is a mathematical tool able to obtain power series coefficients by transformation rules instead of calculating high order derivatives and has proved to be effective in solving state variables of nonlinear differential equations in our previous study. This paper further solves non-state variables, e.g., current injections and bus voltages, directly with a realistic DAE model of power grids. These non-state variables, nonlinearly coupled in network equations, are conventionally solved by numerical methods with time-consuming iterations, but their differential transformations are proved to satisfy formally linear equations in this paper. Thus, a non-iterative algorithm is designed to analytically solve all variables of a power system DAE model with ZIP loads. From test results on a Polish 2383-bus system, the proposed method demonstrates fast and reliable time performance compared to traditional numerical approaches including the implicit trapezoidal rule method and a partitioned scheme using the explicit modified Euler method and Newton Raphson method. Security metric deployment is of immense importance for power utilities especially in future smart grids, which are being actively pursued in smart cities initiatives around the world. Through these metrics, utilities attain real-time awareness of the grid’s security posture. In this paper, we propose a contingency analysis based security evaluation framework for smart grid systems - CASeS. Based on the power flow equations of the grid, communication network characteristics, and concurrent power contingencies, CASeS leverages Markovian Decison Processes (MDP) to quantify the smart grid security. The security index delivered through CASeS emerges as a novel solution for concurrent power contingency consideration, and allows for the preparation of corrective actions to address the quantified grid criticality level. In this paper, we formulate an attack on the relative data alignment scheme used by Phasor Data Concentrators (PDCs) to aggregate and stream phasor measurements. This attack leverages the specification governing the PDC functionality in a Wide Area Measurement System (WAMS). Using a Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) as an attack surface, an adversary injects an attack vector in the PMU timing to manipulate the PDC functionality and force it to drop phasors received from benign PMUs. We expose the PDC relative data alignment scheme to this attack, formulate the attack surface and vector selection as a Linear Program (LP), and demonstrate the impact of this attack on system observability. Our experimental results on standard IEEE test systems demonstrate the attack semantics and impact. In addition, we present the attack in a case study using hardware-in-the-loop co-simulation environment. This paper presents the development and validation of a new oscillatory component load (OCL) model for a measurement-based real-time estimation of dynamic load model parameters. The proposed OCL model has been derived from a second-order differential equation that considers three necessary components, namely static, exponential recovery, and damped oscillatory components. The performance evaluation of the proposed OCL model has been demonstrated through DIgSILENT PowerFactory-based dynamic power system simulations, real-time substation data captured from phasor measurement units located at the primary substations of Leadenham, Holwell, and Regent Street cities, and real-time transient voltage events data provided by the EirGrid. Further, the effectiveness of the proposed OCL model has been assessed by comparing its performance with that of the existing exponential recovery load model. A new flexible and efficient SynchroHub platform, developed at the University of Manchester for real-time data acquisition, processing and visualization, has been used for the real-time estimation of dynamic load model parameters. The validation results revealed the efficacy of the proposed OCL model in tracking both the first as well as the subsequent oscillations of dynamic load model response of the power system for both the steady state as well as transient operating conditions accurately. Submarine cables are indispensable for offshore wind farms (OWFs) connected to a power grid. The submarine cable can cause certain degrees of impact on the system performance due to its different lengths, characteristics, electrical parameters, etc. This paper employs the power-system simulation software of Power System Simulator for Engineering (PSS/E) for modeling a future-scheduled OWF, i.e., a large-scale doubly-fed induction generator-based OWF of 200 MW, connected to Jang-Bin distribution substation of Taiwan Power System through five feeders, five circuit breakers, two step-up power transformers, a commercial submarine cable, and an underground cable. This paper simulates and compares the electrical quantities of the studied OWF with different operating capacities under various lengths of three types of commercial submarine cable. The transient surge peak voltages at the common bus of the OWF and the bus of Jang-Bin distribution substation subject to the switching of one of the five circuit breakers of the studied OWF under different lengths of the three types of commercial submarine cable are also compared using the power-system simulation software of ATPDraw in Alternative Transients Program (ATP) version of Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP). The large amount of power electronic submodules and semiconductor switching events in the Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) introduces several challenges for efficient and accurate Electro-Magnetic Transient (EMT) simulation. Research efforts have focused on developing Average Value Models (AVMs) of MMC that enable fast and accurate dynamic simulation of the converter. This paper proposes a universal blocking-module-based AVM, which can simulate the MMC of different submodule types and provide accurate results for the MMC operating in both blocking and de-blocking modes. An analytical approach is included in the model to calculate the semiconductor losses of different submodule types in the MMC. The objective of this paper is to develop and analyse a variable speed hydropower (VSHP) model that can aid the design of controllers that maximize the utilization of power plant for the provision of ancillary services, considering the limitations given by the hydraulic system. The model is tested and analysed with more or less conventional controllers to identify critical modes, adverse interactions or other limitations that must be taken into account in the future design of potentially multivariable or more advanced controllers for VSHP. Dynamic tests are performed by simulating step responses in power demand and by comparing responses of the model with the VSHP and with a conventional hydropower plant. A participation factor-based interaction analysis shows that there are no strong dynamic couplings between the hydraulic system of the VSHP and the rest of the grid. This simplifies the tuning of the control system. However, the analysis concludes that some oscillatory modes associated with the hydraulic system become significantly more excited when operating at variable speed; which is due to the larger deviation in turbine rotational speed. The wind speeds of each wind turbine generator (WTG) are the basis for establishing an aggregated model of a wind farm for power system transient simulation. However, the commonly obtained operation data of the wind farm do not include the wind speeds of each WTG. Thus, a modeling method for the wind speeds of the WTGs of same moment inside the wind farm was proposed. A wind speed combination model (WSCM) is established via K-means clustering from the sorted field-measured wind speed data, which can provide reasonable wind speeds for each WTG when aggregate modeling the wind farm. Subsequently, an improved two-step clustering method of the WTGs was proposed, by which the WTGs are initially clustered according to whether they enter low voltage ride through (LVRT) mode or not. An “N-1 VS One” aggregated model and the binary search algorithm were used to quickly and correctly predict whether a WTG in the wind farm enters LVRT mode under a grid fault. The case study demonstrates the satisfactory performance of the WSCM and the necessity of clustering the WTGs according to whether they enter or do not enter LVRT mode for obtaining an accurate aggregated model of the wind farm. High-voltage direct current (HVDC) systems are increasingly incorporated into today's AC power grids, necessitating optimal power flow (OPF) tools for the analysis, planning, and operation of such hybrid systems. To this end, we introduce hynet, a Python-based open-source OPF framework for hybrid AC/DC grids with point-to-point and radial multi-terminal HVDC systems. hynet's design promotes ease of use and extensibility, which is supported by the particular mathematical model and software design presented in this paper. The system model features a unified representation of AC and DC subgrids as well as a concise and flexible converter model, which enable the compact description of a hybrid AC/DC power system and its OPF problem. To support convex relaxation based OPF solution techniques, a state space relaxation is introduced to obtain a unified OPF formulation that is analogous to the OPF of AC power systems. This enables the direct generalization of relaxation-related results for AC grids to hybrid AC/DC grids, which is shown for the semidefinite and second-order cone relaxation as well as associated results on exactness and locational marginal prices. Finally, hynet's object-oriented software design is discussed, which provides extensibility via inheritance and standard design patterns, and its robust and competitive performance is illustrated with case studies. DC smart grids enabled by the integration of advanced power electronic converters (PECs) can ease the integration and control of distributed renewable energy resources, electric vehicles, and energy storage systems. However, these highly flexible power systems introduce many challenges when considering the design of reliable, plug-and-play protection that does not rely on dedicated communications infrastructure for device coordination. One particularly difficult challenge is the management of dc-side filter capacitor discharge during short-circuit faults where the large peak fault-current produced can permanently damage exposed semiconductor components within the converter. One solution is to ensure that the trip-time of dc protection devices is sufficiently rapid (sub-millisecond) to guarantee that fault-current is blocked prior to reaching destructive magnitudes. However, such high-speed protection devices do not offer much margin for effective selectivity with downstream devices due to the narrow time window of operation. Accordingly, this paper proposes a non-unit protection scheme for future large-scale dc smart grid applications that increases this time-window of operation to enable improved selectivity whilst retaining a lower level of energy dissipated in the fault. Reliable protection coordination is demonstrated on a dc radial network and is realized using conventional millisecond trip-time devices, and a single solid-state microsecond trip-time device. In this paper we present a solution for real-time multi-FPGA simulation of energy conversion systems based on the Latency-Based Linear Multistep Compound (LB-LMC) simulation approach. The approach relies on a nodal decomposition approach derived from multiport network analysis, and fast parallel communication between Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) devices. The results presented in this paper –using a microgrid example– demonstrate how the developed real-time platform overcame the resource scalability limit of single FPGA solvers while achieving a time step size of 100 nanoseconds. Accurate and efficient simulation of power electronic systems is challenging due to their hybrid nature consisting of continuous states and discrete events. In this paper, a comprehensive discrete state event-driven (DSED) framework is proposed for offline simulation of such hybrid dynamic systems. Two key elements of the proposed comprehensive DSED simulation framework that contribute to the significant improvements in numerical accuracy and computational efficiency are a flexible adaptive algorithm for flexible integration of continuous states and an event-driven mechanism for efficient locating of discrete events. The proposed DSED simulation framework is applied to a 50-kVA solid-state transformer and a multileg full-bridge Class-D amplifier to verify its accuracy and efficiency by comparisons with experimental waveforms and simulated waveforms of Simulink and PLECS. Earth faults occur frequently in power distribution systems and they are usually accompanied by an arc. This is a big hazard to the power distribution systems. Effective early detection is difficult to achieve using conventional methods, which brings inconvenience to fault location and maintenance. In order to solve this problem, a sensitive triggering algorithm should be equipped in the detection device. By analyzing the zero-sequence voltage under normal conditions and fault conditions, a discrete wavelet transform-based triggering algorithm is proposed in this paper. A great number of waveforms simulated by the PSCAD/EMTDC software are used to test the algorithm and two other traditional algorithms, and the results are analyzed and compared. In addition, the curves recorded in the physical simulation systems and the field power distribution systems are input into the proposed algorithm to test its adaptability. For testing whether the algorithm could achieve real-time triggering, a device is designed to carry the algorithm program. The information and communication technology (ICT) is increasingly involved in the measurement, operation, control and protection of the cyber-physical power system (CPPS). As one of the most promising communication infrastructure projects, Starlink is a satellite Internet constellation being constructed by SpaceX for providing global Internet access, which can benefit the network service supply for the communication-enabled power system equipment in locations where the network access is unreliable, expensive, or completely unavailable. In this letter, the future applications of the Starlink space network in CPPSs are explored: the communication infrastructure and transmission parameters are discussed, and the corresponding test case was emulated in real-time on the heterogeneous co-emulation platform to validate the proposed concept of space network enhanced cyber-physical power system. The efficiency of multiterminal dc (MTDC) grid simulation decreases with an expansion of its scale and the inclusion of accurate component models. Thus, the variable time-stepping scheme is proposed in this paper to expedite the electromagnetic transient computation. A number of criteria are proposed to evaluate the time-step and regulate it dynamically during simulation. Meanwhile, as the accuracy of results is heavily reliant on the switch model in the modular multilevel converter, the nonlinear behavioral model with a greater accuracy is proposed in addition to the classic ideal model, and their corresponding variable time-stepping schemes are analyzed. Circuit partitioning is effective in accelerating the MTDC grid simulation via fine-grained separation of nonlinearities. A subsequent large number of identical circuits enabled a massively parallel implementation on the graphics processing unit, which achieved a remarkable speedup over the CPU-based implementation. The inclusion of variable time-stepping schemes eventually makes the simulation of MTDC grid with highly detailed nonlinear switch models feasible. This paper analyzes synchronous generator self-excitation during power system restoration, caused by a large capacitive load and the impact of generator voltage control on the voltage rise. The paper analyzes measurements from a recent self-excitation incident in the Finnish 400-kV transmission system, models the system using an electromagnetic transient model and a linear d-axis generator model, validates the models using the measurements and analyzes the impact of generator voltage control during self-excitation. Self-excitation is rare during a normal system operation but may occur in a weak system during system restoration after a blackout. Since high voltages caused by the self-excitation may delay the restoration or even damage the equipment, self-excitation should be taken into account in restoration planning. This paper shows that the voltage controller and especially the under-excitation limiter settings of the generator have significant impact on the voltage during self-excitation. This paper also shows that details in the excitation system response influence the simulations significantly and reference measurements from the specific generator are required for detailed modeling. However, all measured incidents with digital static excitation systems are important references for simulations. This paper proposes a novel approach for power system dynamic simulation based on the differential transformation (DT). The DT is introduced to study power systems as high-dimensional nonlinear dynamical systems for the first time, and is able to avoid computations of high-order derivatives with nonlinear differential equations by its transform rules. This paper, first, proposes and proves several new transform rules for generic nonlinear functions that often appear in power system models, and then uses these rules to transform representative power system models such as the synchronous machine model with trigonometric functions and the exciter model with exponential and square root functions. This paper also designs a DT-based simulation scheme that allows significantly prolonged time steps to reduce simulation time compared to a traditional numerical approach. The numerical stability, accuracy, and time performance of the proposed new DT-based simulation approach are compared with widely used numerical methods on the IEEE 39-bus system and Polish 2383-bus system. Transactive energy (TE) has been recognized as a promising technique for integrating responsive loads and distributed energy resources as well as advancing grid modernization. To help the industry better understand the value of TE and compare different TE schemes in a systematic and transparent manner, a comprehensive simulation-based TE valuation method is developed. The method has the following salient features: first, it formally defines the valuation scenarios, use cases, baseline, and valuation metrics; second, an open-source simulation platform for transactive energy systems has been developed by integrating transmission, distribution and building simulators, and plugin TE and non-TE agents through the framework for network cosimulation (FNCS); third, transparency and flexibility of the valuation is enhanced through separation of simulation and valuation, base valuation metrics, and final valuation metrics. This work presents the formulation of the correct adaptive incremental conductance (AIC) algorithm which has been confused by some authors with the adaptive P and O (APO) algorithm. By means of simulation and the experimental implementation of these algorithms for maximum power point tracking (AIC and APO), it is shown that their performance under static and dynamic conditions are similar, in agreement with previous results for the conventional IC and P and O algorithms. The relation for the optimum scaling factors for both the AIC and APO algorithms is established here. It is concluded that the AIC algorithm is adequate to implement in cases where a small adaptive scaling factor for the APO algorithm would be a very sensitive parameter to the variation of the PV array parameters. Experimental power tracking efficiencies above 98% have been obtained when both algorithms are used under dynamic operation of a DC-DC converter to be used in a dual stage micro-converter for connecting PV modules directly to the grid. We present two case studies on energy grid hybridization, where the distribution networks of multiple energy sectors are more tightly coupled together to increase their flexibility via mutual transfer of energy. The hybridization approaches were developed in cooperation with the local stakeholder in a northern European city, comprising of a short-term setup with a low adoption barrier as well as a long-term scenario with more involved grid coupling using more efficient devices. For a range of coupling device configurations, device locations, control algorithms, and assumptions on utility prices and energy demand, we investigate the influence of the hybridization on the energy mix, $\text{CO}_2$ emissions, and energy costs. The studies have been conducted using a co-simulation toolchain developed by the European Project OrPHEuS specifically for fine-grained technical simulation of multi-carrier grids. Our results confirm that the hybrid grid approach is an effective means to increase the share of renewable energies and reduce operational costs. In this paper, a new synchronous machine model is developed for electromagnetic transients program type simulations. The stator circuit is expressed in the abc phase domain. The machine model is represented as a Norton equivalent with a current source in parallel with a constant Norton admittance. The machine equations are reformulated so that the computational effort required for the modeling of the machine is reduced. Test studies demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed synchronous machine model and show that the proposed model is computationally more efficient than the existing constant conductance phase domain model and voltage-behind-reactance model. Large-scale integration of wind generation changes the power swing characteristics of a power system and may result in the misoperation of legacy power swing protection schemes. This paper presents a qualitative study on the impact of wind generation on power swing protection. The objective is to provide an understanding of the problem through case studies and present possible solutions and adjustments in protection schemes to ensure the efficiency of protection under large-scale integration of wind generation. The misoperation of power swing protection functions, namely power swing blocking and out-of-step tripping (OST), as a result of increased wind generation levels, are shown through case studies. It is also shown that the electrical center of a power system may move due to wind generation. In this case, it would be necessary to revise the optimal location of the OST protection. Finally, the impact of various factors, such as wind generator type, control scheme and fault-ride-through function, and wind generation level and capacity are investigated to determine the key features that need to be accounted for in practical protection studies. Taking switching transients of switching devices into consideration in design and simulation of power electronic systems has long been a huge obstacle. Sufficient accuracy has to be ensured, meanwhile more significantly the transient model has to be practical, i.e., providing a convergent result with an acceptable solving speed and a convenient parameter extraction technique. Aiming at both targets, this paper proposes a piecewise analytical transient (PAT) model for switching device commutation unit, taking an IGBT–p-i-n diode pair as an example. A piecewise time-varying voltage source-current source pair is utilized to model the IGBT–p-i-n diode pair. With sufficient accuracy, PAT modeling methodology noticeably increases the solving speed and improves the convergence of converter simulations. Model expressions and datasheet-driven parameter extractions are illustrated in detail. Experimental and simulated results are presented and compared to validate both the accuracy and the practicability of the proposed PAT model, expected to be employed in transient simulations of power electronic systems. In this paper, we propose a data-driven load fluctuation model, based on high-resolution historical demand data from multi-regional systems, that can be used for research such as power system generation control studies and probabilistic load flow studies. As in previous studies, the random load fluctuations are modeled as independent Gaussian random variables; however, unlike in previous studies, we do not assume the relationship between the standard deviation and the base demand in each region is known a priori. Instead, we propose a framework for determining the relationship between the base demand level and short-term demand uncertainty. The developed framework has been tested using actual 5-minute demand data from the New York and New Zealand power systems. The results demonstrate that the proposed models outperform those used in previous work. Homotopy analysis method (HAM) is a popular semi-analytical method used widely in applied sciences. It stands out from the rest of the semi-analytical methods as it provides a family of solutions to nonlinear equations, including ordinary differential equations (ODEs), partial differential equations, etc. The convergence characteristics of the solutions can be varied by changing an auxiliary parameter ($\hbar$) in HAM. The convergence region of solution of ODEs using HAM can be improved by applying it over multiple intervals of time, which is referred to as multi-stage HAM (MHAM). In this paper, MHAM models for the IEEE Model 2.2 synchronous machine, IEEE Type-1 excitation system, first-order governor and first-order turbine models have been developed. The applicability of MHAM for power system dynamic simulations has been investigated in this paper using seven widely used test systems ranging from 10 generators 39 bus systems to 4092 generators 13 659 bus systems. The effect of number of terms, $\hbar$ and the time step on the accuracy and stability of the solution has been studied. The effectiveness of MHAM has been compared with the modified Euler (ME) and midpoint Trapezoidal (TrapZ) methods. The accuracy of MHAM has been found to be comparable with ME and TrapZ methods for the values of $\hbar$ between $-$ 1.05 and $-$ 0.95. The best accuracy is obtained for $\hbar$ = $-$ 1.0, which is a special case of MHAM called multi-stage homotopy perturbation method (MHPM). The power flow problem can be compactly formulated using complex variables; its solution is however commonly computed using the real variable Newton-Raphson algorithm, where the complex variables are replaced by their real valued rectangular or polar coordinates. A Newton-Raphson solution in complex variables is hindered by the fact that the power flow equations are non-analytic in their phasor voltages, i.e., they do not have a Taylor series expansion in terms of these complex variables alone. By using Wirtinger calculus, the power flow equations can be expanded in terms of the phasor voltages and their conjugates, thus allowing the implementation of the complex variable Newton-Raphson algorithm. This paper specializes the solution of the complex variable Newton-Raphson power flow to distribution networks, and includes the particularities of modeling line drop compensators, reactive power limited generation, and voltage dependent loads. Numerical results presented on distribution networks with up to 3139 nodes show that the complex implementation is better suited to modern processors that employ single instruction multiple data (SIMD) processor extensions; in particular SIMD instructions result in a complex variable formulation that is faster than the classical real variable formulation, yet it has the distinct advantage of a simple software implementation. The phasor estimation of the fault current signal in the presence of dc offset results in the significant error, which is not suitable for the power system monitoring. To reduce the phasor estimation error of the fault current in the presence of dc offset, primarily the dc offset needs to be mitigated. In this letter, a four-sample method, which requires four sub-cycle samples as the input and estimates the dc offset parameters present in the signal, is proposed. Fault current limiters (FCLs) can play an important role in providing protection of power systems against high fault current levels. This paper proposes a new three-phase structure of saturable-core FCL based on the common core for all three phases. Due to the existence of flux linkage between all three phases, the resulting electromagnetic fluxes negate each other, and therefore the inductance in the normal condition is significantly reduced. In this structure, the dc winding compensates just the imbalance of phase currents in the system. Therefore, the number of dc winding turns decreases, and consequently the induced voltage across this winding is reduced. This structure leads to a significant reduction in the volume of the core. The FCL design algorithm with the new structure is presented. In order to validate the effectiveness of the proposed FCL, simulation is carried out based on the finite-element method and a prototype is made and tested. The increasing utilization of HVAC underground power cables gives rise to technical challenges related to the occurrence of electromagnetic transients. This paper discusses measurements with sensors based on open air capacitances sensing the electric fields from the line having a wide frequency bandwidth and excellent electromagnetic compatibility performance. However, since the sensors are open air capacitors, they also intercept field lines from other phases and measurement decoupling is necessary. Results from measurements, using the differentiating/Integrating technique, at a 380 kV mixed overhead line underground power cable connection obtained at a transition point and at a substation are presented and compared with PSCAD/EMTDC simulations. The measurement system gives accurate results for low and high frequency transients, while the effect of uncertainties in the decoupling is minor. For switching transients, the simulation model was validated in terms of measured and simulated voltage waveforms resulting in similar maximum overvoltage and frequency content. Line differential protection provides the most selective protection scheme for transmission lines. It has an acceptable performance in situations which are challenging for the legacy distance protection. Following large disturbances, two or more areas of a power system may lose their synchronism and go out of step (OOS) which appears often as unstable power swings in some transmission lines. Existing OOS detection methods are based on the impedance trajectory seen by distance relays and conventional line differential protection cannot detect this condition. This paper introduces a new OOS detection method using the current phasors measured at both ends of a transmission line. Rigorous mathematical analyses and illustrated simulation study results are presented to substantiate the efficiency of the proposed method. High-voltage direct-current (HVDC) transmission line protection is essential to the safety and reliability of modern power system with the wide application of HVDC transmission technologies. Based on the characteristics of specific frequency current (SFC) of dc filter, a novel pilot protection scheme for HVDC transmission lines is proposed in this paper. According to the harmonic equivalent circuit and control strategy of HVDC system, the SFC characteristics of dc filter are theoretically analyzed for internal and external faults in the fault steady period. In addition, these characteristics are used to construct a backup protection scheme to identify different fault types. A ±800 kV UHVDC system built in PSCAD/EMTDC is used to verify the accuracy and validity of the proposed protection. Comprehensive simulations show that the proposed protection scheme can not only accurately identify internal and external faults, but is also insensitive to high fault resistance. Furthermore, the proposed protection does not require a high-frequency sampling rate and data synchronization of both ends, making it valuable and prospective for applications in HVDC transmission system. An LCL grid-connected three-phase and three-wire shunt active filter (SAF) is studied and controlled. It is known that SAFs generate distortive components caused by the high switching frequency of a voltage source inverter (VSI). In order to prevent the spread of these distortive components to the grid, the LCL filter (usually controlled by a linear control feedback) is used; while a parasitic phase shift/lag between the reference and injected currents emerges and severely deteriorates the filtration quality. In this study, the inherently robust sliding mode controller (SMC) is used in the SAF, for reducing the phase-shift effects over the broad bandwidth, while improving robustness to system's disturbances. Furthermore, in order to prevent very high frequency switching of the SMC that can severely hurt the switching elements, two different continuous SMCs are employed and studied. In the first solution, a signum function used in discontinuous SMC is replaced by a continuous sigmoid function. The second proposed solution uses an artificial increase of input-output relative degree that allows designing the SMC in terms of the control derivative, while the actual SMC function becomes continuous by integrating the discontinuous SMC. The output of the continuous SMC is pulse width modulated (PWM) in order to provide a fixed given frequency of control switching, required for the VSI safe operation. The proposed approach was validated on a mathematically modeled conventional nonlinear load and a real textile factory (Aleppo, Syria) via simulation based on real measurements coming from power quality analyzers. A new modeling approach of nonlinear loads is proposed and the efficacy of the proposed controllers for SAF/LCL filter, even under unbalanced conditions, is validated via simulations. This paper develops a comprehensive dynamic-phasor-based small-signal model for the modular multilevel converter (MMC) system under unbalanced grid conditions, which takes into consideration the dynamics of the MMC system under a balanced grid condition as well as the other emerging internal harmonics produced by the unbalanced grid components and more complex controllers. The small-signal model is validated by comparing the time-domain responses from a detailed electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation in PSCAD/EMTDC. Based on the eigen-analysis and PSCAD-based time-domain simulation studies, this paper reveals the poorly damped modes that cause unstable oscillations in MMC system under the unbalanced grid conditions. From the results, more poorly damped modes involved in the internal harmonics are emerging under unbalanced grid conditions compared with the modes under the balanced grid conditions, and can highly impact the system dynamic behaviors by the selection of the control parameters. It is also shown that, under the unbalanced grid conditions, the feasible region of the control parameters of the vector current control gets narrowed indicating the reduction of the stability margin, smaller (larger) value of proportional (integral) gain of the circulating current suppressing controller can enhance the system stability, and larger values of the proportional and integral gains of the negative-sequence current suppressing control can result in the harmonic instability of the MMC system. Besides, the parameters of multiple complex-coefficient filters for positive- and negative-sequence components extraction also have a big impact on the small-signal stability of the MMC system and are required to be properly selected. This paper presents the accurate modeling of HVdc links for the dynamic studies of automatic generation control/load frequency control (AGC/LFC) of the multiarea interconnected power system. In earlier AGC studies, HVdc links were simply modeled by using the first-order transfer function with system time constant ${T_{{\rm{dc}}}}$. It was argued that ${T_{{\rm{dc}}}}$ is the time required by HVdc links to establish dc current after following a load disturbance in the power system. However, no mathematical or analytical justification was provided in support to the existing transfer function model of HVdc links. This paper presents the accurate modeling of HVdc links for AGC studies. The comparative analysis has also been performed to demonstrate error being accrued due to the use of the conventional model of HVdc links. Furthermore, this paper also implements the inertia emulation based control strategy in AGC, which allows us to harness the stored energy from the capacitance of HVdc links for AGC operations. Composite power system reliability evaluation is computationally time-consuming because the optimal power flow (OPF) with the least load curtailment is calculated for a large number of samples. Most current studies of probabilistic simulation methods focus on sampling techniques to improve the sampling efficiency and decrease the calculations of the OPF. This paper proposes a fast reliability evaluation method that accelerates the calculation of the OPF using multi-parametric linear programming (MPLP). In this paper, the sampled transmission line statuses are considered by the transmission line status dictionary (TLSD). We match the line status of each sample with the scenarios in the TLSD. For matching samples, the generation status and the sampled load are treated as MPLP parameters of the DC-OPF evaluation model. A dynamic learning algorithm is applied to solve the MPLP problem. Case studies are conducted on both IEEE Reliability Test Systems and a provincial power system in China. This work considers the task of finding an ac-feasible operating point of a severely damaged transmission network while ensuring that a maximal amount of active power loads can be delivered. This AC maximal load delivery (AC-MLD) task is a nonconvex nonlinear optimization problem that is incredibly challenging to solve on large-scale transmission system data sets. This work demonstrates that convex relaxations of the AC-MLD problem provide a reliable and scalable method for finding high-quality bounds on the amount of active power that can be delivered in the AC-MLD problem. To demonstrate their effectiveness, the solution methods proposed in this work are rigorously evaluated on 1000 $N$ - $k$ scenarios on seven power networks ranging in size from 70 to 6000 buses. Measurements from the on-board systems of marine vessels are increasingly available for data analysis and are growing in importance as the ship industry enters a phase of digitalization. The purposes of the data analysis from vessels in operation include the verification of the power system design in general and improvement of the electrical power load analysis in particular. In this paper, we show how to extract valuable information from the data-driven operational profile analysis, which reveals the real power demand, and how the vessel was operated. Using the real power range analysis, we emphasize the significance of rarely occurring high power demands, which are critical for power system design and optimization. We propose a methodology for the quantification of variability in the generated power, which explains the tails of probability distributions of a power signal based on signal decomposition. The proposed methodology makes use of the data and it can facilitate the selection of the optimal size, number, and configuration of generators or batteries when designing new power systems. A continuous Online Monitoring System (OMS) for power system stability based on Phasor Measurements (PMU measurements) at all the generator buses is proposed in this paper. Unlike the state-of-the-art methods, the proposed OMS does not require information about fault clearance. This paper proposes a convolutional neural network, whose input is the heatmap representation of the measurements, for instability prediction. Through extensive simulations on standard IEEE 118-bus and IEEE 145-bus systems, the effectiveness of the proposed OMS is demonstrated under varying loading conditions, fault scenarios, topology changes, and generator parameter variations. Time-domain simulation is the basis of dynamic security assessment for power systems. Traditionally, numerical integration methods are adopted by simulation software to solve nonlinear power system dynamics for any given contingency under a specific operating condition. An alternative simulation approach promising for online applications is to offline derive a semi-analytical solution (SAS) for power system differential equations and then online evaluate the SAS over consecutive time windows regarding the operating condition and contingency until the simulation result over a desired period is obtained. This paper proposes a general semi-analytical approach that derives and evaluates an SAS in the form of a power series in time to approximate the true solution. This paper provides an error-rate upper bound of the SAS for reliable use of adaptive time windows in evaluation of the SAS. To extend the semi-analytical approach for solving general power system differential-algebraic equations, this paper also proposes a dynamic bus method to efficiently link the SAS for dynamic components with the numerical solution of the network algebraic equations. Case studies on the New England 39-bus system and the Polish 2383-bus system test the performance of the proposed approach, compare it with other methods, and show the potentials of the proposed semi-analytical approach for online simulation. The deployment of new sensors and devices on electric distribution systems is increasing the awareness of phenomena characterized by intermittent periods of highly dynamic activity that occur within extended periods of relatively static behavior. The deployment of new devices has enabled the observation of these phenomena; however, the currently available simulation methods cannot accurately reproduce the entire system behavior. Existing simulation methods, and their associated models, are able to capture portions of these phenomena, but there is not a method for efficiently modeling the entire event in a single simulation. This paper presents a novel method of adaptive simulation that enables automated transitions between quasi-static time-series and electromechancial simulation modes, as necessary to capture relevant system dynamics. The transitions between the simulation modes are triggered automatically during the running simulation based on the evolution of the system variables, utilizing multistate modes for generators and motors. This method allows for a single simulation that spans the entire time-frame, has the ability to capture dynamic events, and includes all relevant power system controls. The method of adaptive simulation can support the direct analysis of dynamic power system events, co-simulation of transmission and distribution systems, the development of control systems, and the development of reduced-order models. The increased penetration of renewable resources and retirement of traditional generation units are posing new challenges to power system operations and planning to meet the ever-growing demand for more computing resources to run large-scale, computationally intensive simulations. As the traditional on-premises infrastructure loses pace to the constantly increasing computing needs, cloud computing has become an attractive addition for increasing average computing capacity, and alternative for meeting peak demands. ISO New England (ISO-NE) pioneered the use of cloud computing technology for large-scale power system simulations, believing it to be the only viable solution that is capable of keeping pace with the growing challenge in the foreseeable future. This paper shares the practical design and implementation of an elastic, on-demand, application-independent cloud platform that ISO-NE deployed in production at the end of 2017. As a secure, cost-effective and scalable platform for addressing the intensive computing demand in planning studies, this platform made using Amazon Web service as easy as using on-premises computers by completely automating the access to cloud based resources. This frees ISO engineers to focus on power system analysis, and thus significantly increased their productivity. To accommodate simulation jobs with varying urgency requirements, this platform allows the users to make the tradeoff between cost and completion time.
