Japan Atomic Energy Agency has successfully developed Nb3Sn strand which fulfills ITER requirements. Because Nb3Sn is very susceptible to external strain which reduces critical current, critical temperature, and critical field, it is necessary to evaluate strain dependency of these Nb3Sn strands to confirm an ITER conductor design. An apparatus to measure the strain dependency was newly developed. It has a horseshoe-shaped ring and a strand is soldered on its outer surface. This shape produces uniform axial compressive or tensile strain along strand length by expanding or closing the opening of the ring. Critical current can be measured by the apparatus under a magnetic field up to 1ST, a temperature range of 4.2K to 15K, and strains. The maximum allowable current is about 300A. The article reports that the Information Processing Society of Japan (IPSJ) celebrates the 50th anniversary of Fuji Computer, the first Japanese electronic digital computer. In line with the occasion, the guild held an exhibit from March 7-9, 2006 during its 45th annual convention at Kogakuin University in Shinjuku, Tokyo. The article focuses on an exhibition of computers and calculating devices at the National Science Museum in Tokyo, Japan. Almost a year ago the National Science Museum opened its new building, the second floor of which is dedicated to progress in science and technology. This exhibit showcases some Japanese inventions from the Edo period, from the 17th to the 19th century, and onward. As is widely known, Japan had a long tradition of using abacuses that they originally imported from China. In the Edo period, mathematicians used this calculation board and elaborated on the original calculation method, called Juuki. This exhibit lets visitors see the calculation boards used in those days, which would be informative for those who are interested in human computers. In the exhibit's fifth section, they also show some pioneer Japanese modern computing systems. For example, FUJIC--the first electronic computer to be operated in Japan--is on display. FUJIC was designed in 1956 to automate the calculations for the lens design process.

The Fifteenth Biennial IEEE Conference on Electromagnetic Field Computation (CEFC 2012) was held in Oita, Japan, on November 11-14, 2012. The statistics for CEFC 2012 are as follows: the registered attendance was 347 participants and 28 countries were represented at the Conference. There was an appreciable number of participants attending from Korea, China, France and Brazil, with a broad spectrum of people from all over the world. The article reports that SuperPower Inc. has made the single largest delivery of 2gigahertz HTS wire with a length of 9.7 kilometers to Sumitomo Electric in Japan. It will fabricate the wire into a 30-meter HTS cable to replace a segment of the 1gigahertz HTS cable installed at the Albany Cable Project. This robust, high-performance wire can carry up to 200 times the current of conventional copper wire and operates without resistance.
