Moisture accumulates with the growing aging progress of oil-paper insulation and further shortens the remaining life of the transformer. The frequency-domain spectroscopy (FDS) technique can be used to realize the moisture estimation. However, the moisture estimation results would be unreliable once the aging effect on FDS was ignored. Given this issue, an alternative model including the aging effect is thus proposed using FDS and intelligent algorithm. In this work, the feature parameters of FDS data are used to build the databases for characterizing the aging degree and moisture. Then, the moisture estimation models are developed using the weighted K-nearest neighbor (K-NN) algorithm. The accuracy and applicability of the proposed models are finally discussed in laboratory and field conditions. In that respect, the findings reveal that the reported model is available for moisture estimation of transformer oil-paper insulation under various aging degrees and test temperatures. Nowadays, reliability of power system is of great importance. Therefore, the condition of transformers as the expensive and critical components of a power system should be monitored and assessed. The dominant factor that causes limitation in transformers lifetime is the paper insulation. This paper aims to investigate the conspicuous influence of moisture content, especially in low oxygen and temperature on lifetime estimation under constant conditions, based on the results of previous experiments. Degree of polymerization (DP) is employed to quantify the effects of detrimental parameters with respect to their time-varying nature. This paper proposes a novel lifetime estimation-approach considering a yearly moisture growth for transformers. The results indicate different trend of DP profiles, which lead to an accurate lifetime estimation in comparison with DP obtained through ideal conditions. When adequately maintained, the mechanical system of rewinders and similar machines in paper industry may have a significantly longer service life than its electrical and control systems. Over the lifetime of the facility, a rewinder may experience several major maintenance cycles, and these generally include significant upgrades to the electrical drive and control system. These upgrades present an opportunity to modify the design of the control system to eliminate some of the sensors or to provide signal redundancy by using state estimation. During such major reconstruction of a paper-board rewinder, it was noticed that the shipping-roll radius and the web tension force can be accurately estimated from the measurements available within the drive's control system. This paper presents the implementation of the two estimators on a commercial production rewinder. Test results from the equipment in service show that the measured signals can be supplemented with the estimated ones to provide an alternative in the event of sensor malfunction or to enable trending of accuracy of calibration. Both applications have an entitlement to reduce the downtime of the rewinder, as the replacement of the faulted sensor can be scheduled for the next planned idle period of the machine. Online sensing of sheet modulus of elasticity in the dry-end spans of printing grade paper machines (PMs) will permit the machine operators to control the mechanical properties of the produced paper. This paper develops an integrated sensorless tension control and sheet modulus of elasticity estimation algorithm, which is tested using field-recorded signals from a production PM and using a full model of the dry-end sections of this machine. Results show the ability of the proposed estimation algorithm to predict the sheet tension (tensile force) and sheet modulus of elasticity even in the presence of rapid changes in the speed and/or in other process operating conditions. The developed algorithms offer the papermaker new insights into the papermaking process. Estimating depth from RGB images is a long-standing ill-posed problem, which has been explored for decades by the computer vision, graphics, and machine learning communities. Among the existing techniques, stereo matching remains one of the most widely used in the literature due to its strong connection to the human binocular system. Traditionally, stereo-based depth estimation has been addressed through matching hand-crafted features across multiple images. Despite the extensive amount of research, these traditional techniques still suffer in the presence of highly textured areas, large uniform regions, and occlusions. Motivated by their growing success in solving various 2D and 3D vision problems, deep learning for stereo-based depth estimation has attracted a growing interest from the community, with more than 150 papers published in this area between 2014 and 2019. This new generation of methods has demonstrated a significant leap in performance, enabling applications such as autonomous driving and augmented reality. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey of this new and continuously growing field of research, summarize the most commonly used pipelines, and discuss their benefits and limitations. This paper presents the overview and rationale behind the Decoder-Side Depth Estimation (DSDE) mode of the MPEG Immersive Video (MIV) standard, using the Geometry Absent profile, for efficient compression of immersive multiview video. A MIV bitstream generated by an encoder operating in the DSDE mode does not include depth maps. It only contains the information required to reconstruct them in the client or in the cloud: decoded views and metadata. The paper explains the technical details and techniques supported by this novel MIV DSDE mode. The description additionally includes the specification on Geometry Assistance Supplemental Enhancement Information which helps to reduce the complexity of depth estimation, when performed in the cloud or at the decoder side. The depth estimation in MIV is a non-normative part of the decoding process, therefore, any method can be used to compute the depth maps. This paper lists a set of requirements for depth estimation, induced by the specific characteristics of the DSDE. The depth estimation reference software, continuously and collaboratively developed with MIV to meet these requirements, is presented in this paper. Several original experimental results are presented. The efficiency of the DSDE is compared to two MIV profiles. The combined non-transmission of depth maps and efficient coding of textures enabled by the DSDE leads to efficient compression and rendering quality improvement compared to the usual encoder-side depth estimation. Furfural analysis is considered as a reliable method to estimate aging of cellulose insulation paper and is widely applied in assessing the condition of field transformers. However, the actual concentration of furfural in insulating oil is influenced by oil replacement, and the correction method is seldom studied. In this research, an accelerated thermal aging test of oil-paper samples was conducted at 130 ?C for 35 days. Insulating oil was replaced at early, middle, and late aging stages to investigate furfural loss during the oil replacement process and its effects on assessing the aging of insulation paper. Results showed that furfural in oil obviously declined after oil replacement, which caused a severe error in paper aging evaluation. To correct furfural loss, the furfural correction factor, which is defined as the ratio of the furfural content in oil after oil replacement to the furfural content before oil replacement, was introduced into the furfural analysis method. The parameters and influencing factors of the furfural correction function were researched. The furfural correction function was verified using experimental data obtained under laboratory conditions and field data collected from 44 in-service transformers. The results showed that the furfural correction function effectively corrects furfural loss during oil replacement and improves the accuracy of estimating paper aging. This paper studies the problem of estimating the covariance of a collection of vectors using only highly compressed measurements of each vector. An estimator based on back-projections of these compressive samples is proposed and analyzed. A distribution-free analysis shows that by observing just a single linear measurement of each vector, one can consistently estimate the covariance matrix, in both infinity and spectral norm, and this analysis leads to precise rates of convergence in both norms. Through information-theoretic techniques, lower bounds showing that this estimator is minimax-optimal for both infinity and spectral norm estimation problems are established. These results are also specialized to give matching upper and lower bounds for estimating the population covariance of a collection of Gaussian vectors, again in the compressive measurement model. The analysis conducted in this paper shows that the effective sample complexity for this problem is scaled by a factor of $m^{2}/d^{2}$ , where $m$ is the compression dimension and $d$ is the ambient dimension. This paper discusses a recent event in the western American power system when a forced oscillation was observed at a frequency that was close to a well-known 0.38-Hz inter-area electromechanical mode frequency of the western system. The event motivates a systematic investigation in this paper on the possibility of resonant interactions between forced oscillations and electromechanical inter-area oscillatory modes in power systems. When the natural oscillatory mode of a power system is poorly damped, and the forced oscillation occurs at a frequency close to system mode frequency at critical locations for the mode, resonance is observed in simulation test cases of the paper. It is shown that the MW oscillations on tie-lines can be as high as 477 MW from a 10-MW forced oscillation in Kundur test system because of resonance. This paper discusses the underlying system conditions and effects as related to resonance in power systems caused by forced oscillations and discusses ways to detect such scenarios using synchrophasors. Simulated data from Kundur two-area test power system as well as measurement data from western American power system are used to study the effect of forced oscillations in power systems. Capturing the ‘mutual gaze’ of people is essential for understanding and interpreting the social interactions between them. To this end, this paper addresses the problem of detecting people Looking At Each Other (LAEO) in video sequences. For this purpose, we propose LAEO-Net++, a new deep CNN for determining LAEO in videos. In contrast to previous works, LAEO-Net++ takes spatio-temporal tracks as input and reasons about the whole track. It consists of three branches, one for each character's tracked head and one for their relative position. Moreover, we introduce two new LAEO datasets: UCO-LAEO and AVA-LAEO. A thorough experimental evaluation demonstrates the ability of LAEO-Net++ to successfully determine if two people are LAEO and the temporal window where it happens. Our model achieves state-of-the-art results on the existing TVHID-LAEO video dataset, significantly outperforming previous approaches. Finally, we apply LAEO-Net++ to a social network, where we automatically infer the social relationship between pairs of people based on the frequency and duration that they LAEO, and show that LAEO can be a useful tool for guided search of human interactions in videos. The presence of condensate inside the dryer cylinders produces a significant increase in the power requirements during starting, putting at risk the capacity of the drive to complete a successful start. In past papers, authors developed estimation algorithms for the detection of condensate during section starting. This paper proposes and evaluates a new strategy that will complement the previous algorithms. This strategy will detect the presence of condensate from the condensate collapsing during the section shutdown. The proposed correlations are derived through a complete experimental evaluation in two experimental cylinders covering rim thicknesses up to 55 mm. The estimation algorithms are split into a low-/moderate-condensate-load zone and a high-condensate-load zone. Results confirm the robustness and accuracy of the proposed algorithms. The Cox proportional hazards model is a popular semi-parametric model for survival analysis. In this paper, we aim at developing a federated algorithm for the Cox proportional hazards model over vertically partitioned data (i.e., data from the same patient are stored at different institutions). We propose a novel algorithm, namely VERTICOX, to obtain the global model parameters in a distributed fashion based on the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) framework. The proposed model computes intermediary statistics and exchanges them to calculate the global model without collecting individual patient-level data. We demonstrate that our algorithm achieves equivalent accuracy for the estimation of model parameters and statistics to that of its centralized realization. The proposed algorithm converges linearly under the ADMM framework. Its computational complexity and communication costs are polynomially and linearly associated with the number of subjects, respectively. Experimental results show that VERTICOX can achieve accurate model parameter estimation to support federated survival analysis over vertically distributed data by saving bandwidth and avoiding exchange of information about individual patients. Synchrophasor estimators are nowadays evaluated with the Total Vector Error (TVE) using the synchrophasor representations of the few benchmark signals. This synchrophasor dependence prevents its application to power signals of real events. A new method to obtain the synchrophasor of real signals is proposed in this paper. A finite impulse response (FIR) filter, designed with the nonic O-spline is proposed to obtain phasor estimates asymptotically close to those of an ideal bandpass filter. The phasor estimation accuracy of one or several Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) can be then assessed using the standard. In addition, it is possible to design two FIR differentiators to obtain frequency and ROCOF estimates close enough to those of ideal differentiator filters, and largely compliant with the standard. This new set of filters opens the way to apply the synchrophasor standard to assess estimates of PMUs of different brands when they process the same signals of a power system event. In this paper, the erratic phasor and frequency estimates produced by a SEL-351 A PMU from a real distributed generation system are assessed to corroborate that the synchrophasor standard can be opened to this new application based on real signals from the field, previously considered as impossible. With low voltage (LV) distribution networks increasingly being re-purposed beyond their original design specifications to accommodate low carbon technologies, the ability to accurately calculate their actual spare capacity is critical. Traditionally, within the Great Britain (GB) power system, there has been limited monitoring of LV distribution networks, making this difficult. This paper proposes a method for estimating spare capacity of unmonitored LV networks using demand data from customer Smart Meters. In particular, the proposed method infers existing LV network capacity, as well as losses, across scenarios where only a limited number of customers have Smart Meters installed. Typical daily load profiles across customers with Smart Meters are learned using a Dirichlet sampled Gaussian mixture model (GMM). Learned profiles are then applied to all unmetered customers to estimate network parameters. Method accuracy is assessed by comparing estimations with simulated, fully observed, LV network models. The method is also compared to benchmark models for establishing unobserved demand profiles. Overall, results in the paper show that the proposed method outperforms benchmark models in terms of accurately assessing substation headroom, particularly in scenarios where only 10–50% of customers have Smart Meters installed. In this paper, the problem of human action recognition using 3D reconstruction data is deeply investigated. 3D reconstruction techniques are employed for addressing two of the most challenging issues related to human action recognition in the general case, namely view variance (i.e., when the same action is observed from different viewpoints) and the presence of (self-) occlusions (i.e., when for a given point of view a body part of an individual conceals another body part of the same or another subject). The main contributions of this paper are summarized as follows. The first one is a detailed examination of the use of 3D reconstruction data for performing human action recognition. The latter includes the introduction of appropriate local/global flow/shape descriptors, extensive experiments in challenging publicly available datasets and exhaustive comparisons with state-of-art approaches. The second one is a new local-level 3D flow descriptor, which incorporates spatial and surface information in the flow representation and efficiently handles the problem of defining 3D orientation at every local neighborhood. The third one is a new global-level 3D flow descriptor that efficiently encodes the global motion characteristics in a compact way. The fourth one is a novel global temporal-shape descriptor that extends the notion of 3D shape descriptions for action recognition, by incorporating the temporal dimension. The proposed descriptor efficiently addresses the inherent problems of temporal alignment and compact representation, while also being robust in the presence of noise (compared with similar tracking-based methods of the literature). Overall, this paper significantly improves the state-of-art performance and introduces new research directions in the field of 3D action recognition, following the recent development and wide-spread use of portable, affordable, high-quality and accurate motion capturing devices (e.g., Microsoft Kinect). Self-tracking receivers have been suggested for satellite and mobile communication applications. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate an array receiver (Rx) architecture based on phase-locked loops. The system is capable of automatically tracking a moving source and providing direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimates calculated from array signal phase differences. After deriving the system transfer functions, we show a digital implementation of the receiver and experimentally prove its phase detection capability. In combination with an eight-element linear array and analog front ends, we build a hybrid receiver and demonstrate its DOA estimation performance in static and dynamic outdoor setups. This paper gives the details about theoretic principles, implementation concept, and realization of the proposed receiver. We demonstrate DOA errors below 4° and show the reproducibility of the results. Multiview video coding (MVC) aims to compress the multiview video through the elimination of video redundancies, where the quality of the reference frame directly affects the compression efficiency. In this paper, we propose a deep virtual reference frame generation method based on a disparity-aware reference frame generation network (DAG-Net) to transform the disparity relationship between different viewpoints and generate a more reliable reference frame. The proposed DAG-Net consists of a multi-level receptive field module, a disparity-aware alignment module, and a fusion reconstruction module. First, a multi-level receptive field module is designed to enlarge the receptive field, and extract the multi-scale deep features of the temporal and inter-view reference frames. Then, a disparity-aware alignment module is proposed to learn the disparity relationship, and perform disparity shift on the inter-view reference frame to align it with the temporal reference frame. Finally, a fusion reconstruction module is utilized to fuse the complementary information and generate a more reliable virtual reference frame. A good quality stability model is a key factor for accurate power system operations.Inaccurate parameters of the stability models affect the decision making which paves the way for serious consequences. Thus, it is necessary to calibrate the stability model parameters in a regular manner. There are several calibration methods in the literature which are based on simultaneous estimation of the parameters and states. However, not all of the model parameters are well estimable simultaneously. Simultaneous estimation of parameters with high collinearity may result in biased calibration results. In this paper, the trajectory sensitivity method is used to detect the sensitive parameters and construct the sensitivity matrix. Then, parameters with high linear dependency are identified using the sensitivity matrix. It is shown that, despite the high sensitivity of a parameter, its estimability degrades as the collinearity with other parameters increase. In this paper, an original method about heavy-vehicle rollover risk prediction is presented and validated experimentally. It is based on the calculation of the load transfer ratio (LTR), which depends on the estimated vertical forces using high-order sliding-mode (HOSM) observers. Previously, a tractor model is developed. The validation tests were carried out on an instrumented tractor rolling on the road at various speeds and lane-change maneuvers. Many scenarios have been experienced: driving tests in a straight line, a curve, and a zigzag line, and brake tests to emphasize the rollover phenomenon and its prediction to set off an alarm to the driver. In this paper, the vehicle dynamic parameters (masses, inertia, stiffness, etc.) and the static-force infrastructure characteristics (road profile, radius of curvature, longitudinal and lateral slopes, and skid resistance) are measured or calculated before the tests. This two-part paper considers the coordination of a population of thermostatically controlled loads (TCLs) with unknown parameters to achieve group objectives. The problem involves designing the bidding and market clearing strategy to motivate self-interested users to realize efficient energy allocation subject to a peak energy constraint. The companion paper (Part I) formulates the problem and proposes a load coordination framework using the mechanism design approach. To address the unknown parameters, Part II of this paper presents a joint state and parameter estimation framework based on the expectation maximization algorithm. The overall framework is then validated using real-world weather data and price data, and is compared with other approaches in terms of aggregated load response. Simulation results indicate that our coordination framework can effectively improve the operational efficiency of the distribution system and reduce power congestion at key times. This paper presents a modified orthogonal propagator method (OPM) with spline interpolation for direction of arrival (DoA) estimation. The conventional OPM is based on the noise-free signal model. When noise exists, the main contribution of noise (additive temporally and spatially white Gaussian noise) is in the diagonal elements of the data covariance matrix. Therefore, the influence of noise can be minimized by restoring the noise free diagonal elements through an interpolation procedure and the propagator can then be directly extracted from the denoised data covariance matrix, which is the main idea of the proposed method in this paper. The performance of the proposed modified OPM is tested through numerical simulations. In this paper, simple methodologies of deep learning application to conventional multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems are presented. The deep learning technologies with deep neural network (DNN) structure, emerging technologies in various engineering areas, have been actively investigated in the field of communication engineering as well. In the physical layer of conventional communication systems, there are practical challenges of application of DNN: calculating complex number in DNN and designing proper DNN structure for a specific communication system model. This paper proposes and verifies simple solutions for the difficulty. First, we apply a basic DNN structure for signal detection of one-tap MIMO channel. Second, convolutional neural network (CNN) and recurrent neural network (RNN) structures are presented for MIMO system with multipath fading channel. Our DNN structure for one-tap MIMO channel can achieve the optimal maximum likelihood detection performance, and furthermore, our CNN and RNN structures for multipath fading channel can detect the transmitted signal properly. This paper presents a practical procedure regarding inertia estimation and speed loop auto-tuning for sensorless interior permanent-magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) drives. In many applications, well-tuned speed controller is essential to enable dynamic and stable drive operations. However, high-performance speed controller design requires system parameters such as inertia which are unknown at the beginning of drive commissioning. Manual trial-and-error tuning is unattractive due to its blind, lengthy, non-optimal, and potentially unsafe nature. On the other hand, model-based tuning through inertia estimation has unique challenges at this step of self-commissioning. Determining the test torque for a safe and reasonably short test in inertia estimation is a real practical problem because the total inertia can be in wide range in different mechanical systems. Furthermore, feedback controllers are not usable to automatically determine the test torque due to unknown motor parameters. As a solution, this paper proposes an automated test torque selection procedure. Then it identifies the inertia and lastly tunes the speed controller using the identified parameter. Overall, a fully automated speed-loop auto-tuning method is proposed which aims minimal operator involvement. The findings are experimentally verified on an IPMSM drive. Three-phase grid-connected inverter modeling depends on the equivalent resistance and inductance between the inverter and the grid. However, these parameters are not fixed during the operation of the inverter and vary with the operating conditions. In this paper, a new globally stable adaptive controller is proposed to estimate these values online and update the controller during its operation. A model reference adaptive system (MRAS) based on two fictitious quantities with no physical significance is utilized, namely $M = v \cdot i^*$ and $N = v^* \times i$ , where $v$ and $i$ are the steady-state values of voltage and current in synchronously rotating frame of reference. Detailed stability analysis of the proposed estimation technique has been presented using a Lyapunov energy function-based approach proving the global stability of the technique. Small-signal modeling and analysis of the proposed scheme has also been presented so as to understand the local dynamics of the system. The guidelines to select the parameter of the proposed MRAS system along with updating the controller are elaborated in this paper. Detailed simulation based on MATLAB/Simulink and PLECS, along with experimental studies through a Texas Instruments TMS320F28377S microcontroller, validates the feasibility of the proposed control architecture. Using two electrically long dipoles to estimate the polarizations of impinging sources, this paper pioneers signal-processing algorithms in closed forms. The existing literature on crossed-dipoles polarimetry are restricted to electrically short dipoles with an electrical length of $(L/\lambda) \le (1/10)$ , which have subpar efficiency in radiation and in reception. In contrast, this paper allows electrically long dipoles—two of them here are perpendicularly oriented but may be collocated or may be separated by a known displacement. The main goal in group testing is to recover a small subset of defective items from a larger population while efficiently reducing the total number of (possibly noisy) required tests/measurements. Under the assumption that the input-output statistical relationship (i.e., channel law) is known to the recovery algorithm, the fundamental as well as the computational limits of the group testing problem are relatively better understood than when these statistical relationships are unknown. Practical considerations, however, render this assumption inapplicable, and “blind” recovery/estimation procedures, independent of the input-output statistics, are desired. In this paper, we analyze the fundamental limits of a general noisy group testing problem, when this relationship is unknown. Specifically, in the first part of this paper, we propose an efficient scheme, based on the idea of separate-decoding of items (where each item is recovered separately), for which we derive sufficient conditions on the number of tests required for exact recovery. The difficulty in obtaining these conditions stems from the fact that we allow the number of defective items to grow with the population size, which in turn requires delicate concentration analysis of certain probabilities. Furthermore, we show that in several scenarios, our proposed scheme achieves the same performance as that of the corresponding non-blind recovery algorithm (where the input-output statistics are known), implying that the proposed blind scheme is robust/universal. This paper investigates the feasibility of novel data-driven deep learning (DL) models to predict the solution of Maxwell’s equations for low-frequency electromagnetic (EM) devices. With ground truth (empirical evidence) data being generated from a finite-element analysis solver, a deep convolutional neural network is trained in a supervised manner to learn a mapping for magnetic field distribution for topologies of different complexities of geometry, material, and excitation, including a simple coil, a transformer, and a permanent magnet motor. Preliminary experiments show DL model predictions in close agreement with the ground truth. A probabilistic model is introduced to improve the accuracy and to quantify the uncertainty in the prediction, based on Monte Carlo dropout. This paper describes a new pulse sequence design and estimation approach, which can increase the maximum detectable velocity in synthetic-aperture (SA) velocity imaging. In SA, $N$ spherical or plane waves are emitted, and the sequence is repeated continuously. The $N$ emissions are combined to form a high-resolution image (HRI). Correlation of HRIs is employed to estimate velocity, and the combination of $N$ emissions lowers the effective pulse repetition frequency by $N$. Interleaving emission sequences can increase the effective pulse repetition frequency to the actual pulse repetition frequency, thereby increasing the maximum detectable velocity by a factor of $N$. This makes it possible to use longer sequences with better focusing properties. It can also increase the possible interrogation depth for vessels with large velocities. A new cross-correlation vector flow estimator is also presented, which can further increase the maximum detectable velocity by a factor of 3. It is based on transverse oscillation (TO), a preprocessing stage, and cross-correlation of signals beamformed orthogonal to the ultrasound propagation direction. The estimator is self-calibrating without estimating the lateral TO wavelength. This paper develops the theory behind the two methods. The performance is demonstrated in the accompanying paper for convex and phased array probes connected to the synthetic aperture real-time ultrasound system scanner for parabolic flow for both conventional and SA imaging. This paper studies the capacity of an $n$ -dimensional vector Gaussian noise channel subject to the constraint that an input must lie in the ball of radius $R$ centered at the origin. It is known that in this setting, the optimizing input distribution is supported on a finite number of concentric spheres. However, the number, the positions, and the probabilities of the spheres are generally unknown. This paper characterizes necessary and sufficient conditions on the constraint $R$ , such that the input distribution supported on a single sphere is optimal. The maximum $\bar {R}_{n}$ , such that using only a single sphere is optimal, is shown to be a solution of an integral equation. This paper is an extension of the procedure pointed out to evaluate the distortion of the exponential signal, modeled as multiexponential signal with different amplitudes and time constants. This procedure evaluates the distortion by applying the Prony-like method to the signal reconstructed by zero-crossing time evaluated on the difference between the exponential original signal and the reference sinusoidal one. The extension proposed in this paper concerns with the use of the low-chirp signal as reference instead of the sinusoidal signal. The low-chirp signal permits to increase the number of the zero-crossing time in the section of exponential signal with the higher slope and decreasing in the section with the lower slope. This setting permits to estimate the distortion of the exponential signal with higher accuracy and precision. The parameters’ amplitude, phase, and start frequency of the reference low-chirp signal are used to reconstruct the exponential signal in the zero-crossing time in order to overcome the problem of the high-resolution sampling. Their estimation is carried out by the time-varying sine-fitting algorithm that processes the resulting signal that is the difference between the exponential original signal and the low-chirp signal. Advantages of the proposed extended procedure regard the direct estimation of the reference low-chirp signal parameters from the resulting signal over-sampled at low resolution, and the use of only one input acquisition channel that permits to overcome the synchronization problem between the reference and the resulting signal. Linear spectral unmixing is the practice of decomposing the mixed pixel into a linear combination of the constituent endmembers and the estimated abundances. This paper focuses on unsupervised spectral unmixing where the endmembers are unknown a priori. Conventional approaches use either geometrical- or statistical-based approaches. In this paper, we address the challenges of spectral unmixing with unsupervised deep learning models, in specific, the autoencoder models, where the decoder serves as the endmembers and the hidden layer output serves as the abundances. In several recent attempts, part-based autoencoders have been designed to solve the unsupervised spectral unmixing problem. However, the performance has not been satisfactory. In this paper, we first discuss some important findings we make on issues with part-based autoencoders. By proof of counterexample, we show that all existing part-based autoencoder networks with nonnegative and tied encoder and decoder are inherently defective by making these inappropriate assumptions on the network structure. As a result, they are not suitable for solving the spectral unmixing problem. We propose a so-called untied denoising autoencoder with sparsity, in which the encoder and decoder of the network are independent, and only the decoder of the network is enforced to be nonnegative. Furthermore, we make two critical additions to the network design. First, since denoising is an essential step for spectral unmixing, we propose to incorporate the denoising capacity into the network optimization in the format of a denoising constraint rather than cascading another denoising preprocessor in order to avoid the introduction of additional reconstruction error. Second, to be more robust to the inaccurate estimation of a number of endmembers, we adopt an $l_{21}$ -norm on the encoder of the network to reduce the redundant endmembers while decreasing the reconstruction error simultaneously. We present an approach to extend the functionality and the use of kernel machines in image processing applications. We introduce a novel way to design spatial kernel machines with spatial properties and demonstrate how those newly introduced spatial properties enhance the possibilities of the use of kernel machines in image processing applications as a proof of concept. In this paper, we demonstrate four particular extensions: 1) how to model shapes efficiently with spatially computed kernel parameters in a geometrically scalable way; 2) how to visualize the kernel parameters precisely and intuitively on binary 2D shapes; 3) how to construct a one-class classifier from the binary classifier in a straightforward manner without re-training; and 4) how to use the computed kernel parameters for filtering. The existing literature on kernel machines mostly focuses on estimating the optimal kernel parameters via additional cost function(s). In this paper, instead of employing an additional cost function to estimate the kernel-related parameters, we investigate on an analytical solution to predict the actual kernel parameters locally and show how to build a spatial kernel machine with our analytical approach. Classical kernel machines do not perform well on precise shape modeling with a low number of support vectors as demonstrated in this paper. However, we demonstrate and visualize that our analytical approach provides a natural means to relate the kernel parameters to the 2D shapes for sparse shape modeling, where the shape boundary represents the decision boundary. For that, we incorporate the selected kernel function’s geometric properties as an additional constraint into the classifier’s optimization problem by defining an easy-to-explain and intuitive concept: similarity domains. In our experiments, we study and demonstrate how the resulting new kernel machine enhances the capabilities of the classical kernel machines with applications on shape modeling, (geometrically) scaling the non-linear decision boundary at various scales and precise visualization of the kernel parameters in 2D images. A generalized framework of spectrum sensing disruption for a power-limited adversary is proposed in this paper. In the literature, a conventional sensing attack typically assumes that the adversary has perfect knowledge of the spectral usage status. The framework in this paper considers a more general case where there are uncertainties in the estimates at the adversary. These uncertainties are modeled utilizing the probability of detection and the probability of false alarm. Then, the sum of the conditional probabilities of false detection at the secondary within the spectral range of interest, conditioned on the adversary’s estimated spectrum usage status, is maximized. It is shown that the optimal sensing attack, given perfect estimation is a special case of the proposed framework. When the adversary has perfect spectrum usage information, this framework reduces to a previously demonstrated optimal sensing disruption. When the adversary has imperfect information on the spectral status, the proposed framework is significantly more robust than conventional sensing attacks. This paper concerns the detection and identification of errors in the parameters of three-phase transposed as well as untransposed transmission line (TL) models used by various network applications. Such detailed models are increasingly needed in particular by power system applications where loads may not be balanced and/or TLs may not be symmetrical, and a full detailed three-phase solution may have to be obtained. To address this problem, the paper proposes an efficient algorithm for detection, identification, and estimation of parameter errors using synchronized phasor measurements. The suspect TL is detected using the modal domain networks in the first stage. The developed algorithm extends the previously developed largest normalized Lagrange multiplier (NLM) test for positive sequence parameters to the full coupled three-phase lines. An estimation method is also proposed for estimating the erroneous parameters, which takes into account the correlation of the parameters. There is an opportunity in modern power systems to explore the demand flexibility by incentivizing consumers with dynamic prices. In this paper, we quantify demand flexibility using an efficient tool called time-varying elasticity, whose value may change depending on the prices and decision dynamics. This tool is particularly useful for evaluating the demand response potential and system reliability. Recent empirical evidences have highlighted some abnormal features when studying demand flexibility, such as delayed responses and vanishing elasticities after price spikes. Existing methods fail to capture these complicated features because they heavily rely on some predefined (often over-simplified) regression expressions. Instead, this paper proposes a model-free methodology to automatically and accurately derive the optimal estimation pattern. We further develop a two-stage estimation process with Siamese long short-term memory (LSTM) networks. Here, a LSTM network encodes the price response, while the other network estimates the time-varying elasticities. In the case study, the proposed framework and models are validated to achieve higher overall estimation accuracy and better description for various abnormal features when compared with the state-of-the-art methods. Spatial crowdsensing is a special kind of crowdsourcing which allocates tasks to workers in some special places where workers can sense data for them. Due to the lack of priori information about the quality of workers and the ground truth, selecting the most suitable workers, which can guarantee the quality of the sensing tasks, remains a great challenge. In this paper, we propose a novel framework which can choose the most reliable workers among available workers under constraint budget. We model the quality of workers through two factors, bias and variance, which describe the continuous feature of sensing tasks. Our framework first allocate some calibration tasks to calibrate the bias and then iteratively estimate the workers variance more and more accurately. To choose more reliable workers, we face the exploration and exploitation dilemma. Therefore, we design a novel Multi-Armed Bandit (MAB) algorithm which based on Upper Confidence Bounds (UCB) scheme and combined with a weighted data aggregation scheme to estimate a more accurate ground truth of a sensing task. Futhermore, a dynamic budget allocation algorithm is designed to achieve global optimization. Then, we prove the expected sensing error can be bounded according to the regret bound of the MAB. In simulation experiments, we compare our algorithm with several baselines with real-world data set and it shows the effectiveness in inferring the ground truth with limited budget. This paper proposes a direct damping feedback control method against power system oscillations under small or large disturbances. For a targeted oscillation mode, this control method continuously minimizes the difference between the real-time estimated damping ratio and a desired value by changing power outputs of selected inverter-based resources. The method adopts a proportional-integral controller whose parameters are tuned using a nonlinear single-input-single-output model on damping estimation and control with a single-oscillator equivalent regarding the targeted power system mode. Also, optimization of these controller parameters considers both robustness and time performance in damping control. The paper also proposes utilizing a “zero-th order” parametric resonance phenomenon to simplify the controller design. Tests on a small power system and a 140-bus 48-machine Northeast Power Coordinating Council system validate the effectiveness of the proposed damping controller utilizing battery-based energy storage systems. A large number of non-linear hardware and control units exists in power electronic system used in grid connected devices. The analytical transient stability analysis of grid-connected converters presents numerous difficulties. A common method to tackle this problem is the stability analysis using Lyapunov’s method. By applying this method, difficulties arise not only from finding a suitable Lyapunov function, but also from checking the constraint of Lyapunov stability. If the appropriate Lyapunov function is a high-order polynomial, it is very challenging to test if it meets the constraints of Lyapunov stability in certain regions. In this paper, the sum-of-squares programming method is used to obtain the estimation of a converter’s domain of attraction with a relatively small number of iterations compared to classically applied methods, such as the Monte Carlo method. This paper aims to achieve computationally efficient and high-accuracy subpixel image registration with large displacements under the rotation–scale–translation model. This paper employs the classical phase correlation algorithm and the Lucas–Kanade (LK) algorithm in a two-stage coarse-to-fine framework, for which the motivation is from the observation that the two algorithms exhibit strong complementary property between convergence range and subpixel accuracy. In this framework, the LK algorithm will also become computationally efficient owing to the small residual displacement. On the other hand, this paper takes into account the residual model with respect to the compensation scheme explicitly, and deduces formulas for the final results combination, which is expected to be closer to the true displacement vector and thus further improve the estimation accuracy. Since the compensation can be applied to either the target image or the reference image, two algorithms are presented accordingly, and analysis as well as comparison are also performed. The efficacy of the multimodel framework (MMF) in modeling and identification of complex, nonlinear, and uncertain systems has been widely recognized in the literature owing to its simplicity, transparency, and mathematical tractability, allowing the use of well-known modeling analysis and control design techniques. The approach proved to be effective in addressing some of the shortcomings of other modeling techniques such as those based on a single nonlinear autoregressive network with exogenous inputs model or neural networks. A great number of researchers have contributed to this active field. Due to the significant amount of contributions and the lack of a recent survey, the review of recent developments in this field is vital. In this two-part paper, we attempt to provide a comprehensive coverage of the multimodel approach for modeling and identification of complex systems. This paper contains a classification of different methods, the challenges encountered, as well as recent applications of MMF in various fields. In this part 2, the review of multimodel internal structures and parameter estimation as well as validity computation methods is presented. In addition, a multimodel application and future direction are covered. In this literature survey, our main focus is on the MMF where the final system’s representation and behavior is generated through the interpolation of several possible local models. This paper presents an offline state-of-health (SoH) estimation based on charge transfer resistance for high-power lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries, such as lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. As shown in the experimental results, the charge transfer resistance has a great aging change with battery degradation and good abilities against state-of-charge (SoC) drift and external resistance variation in the impedance parameter set of a single-time-constant equivalent circuit model (ECM), including ohmic resistance, charge transfer resistance, double-layer capacitance, and time constant, for SoH estimation. A fast and efficient three-point (TP) impedance extraction method is also proposed in this paper for accurately extracting the charge transfer resistance in offline SoH estimation. The results of long-term cycling test demonstrate that the TP impedance extraction method can successfully indicate the SoH of LFP batteries with low estimation error of 6.1%. The reliable operation of battery management systems depends critically on the accurate estimation of the state of charge (SOC) and characterizing parameters of a battery system. SOC estimation employs models that must be robust against variations in battery cell electrochemical features, aging, and operating conditions. This paper reveals that commonly used SOC estimation schemes are fundamentally flawed in providing the robustness of SOC estimation against model uncertainties. Parameter estimation methodologies and adaptive SOC estimation design are introduced in this paper to enhance SOC estimation accuracy and robustness. By a scrutiny of the impact of parameter variations on SOC estimation accuracy, the SOC–open-circuit-voltage mapping is identified to be the most critical function that must be accurately established. Identification algorithms are introduced, and their convergence properties are established. The integration of the identification algorithms and SOC estimation schemes lead to an adaptive SOC estimation framework that is superior over the existing methods in providing much improved accuracy and robustness. Clothing recognition is a societally and commercially important yet extremely challenging problem due to large variations in clothing appearance, layering, style, and body shape and pose. In this paper, we tackle the clothing parsing problem using a retrieval-based approach. For a query image, we find similar styles from a large database of tagged fashion images and use these examples to recognize clothing items in the query. Our approach combines parsing from: pre-trained global clothing models, local clothing models learned on the fly from retrieved examples, and transferred parse-masks (Paper Doll item transfer) from retrieved examples. We evaluate our approach extensively and show significant improvements over previous state-of-the-art for both localization (clothing parsing given weak supervision in the form of tags) and detection (general clothing parsing). This paper studies the estimation problem for a class of nonlinear tunnel diode circuits with parameter perturbation. The dynamics of the nonlinear circuit is approximated by the Takagi–Sugeno fuzzy model with linear fractional parametric uncertainties. Considering the fuzzy filter with gain uncertainties, a filtering error system can be gotten naturally. The concentration of this paper lies in deriving the design conditions for the desired resilient filter such that the filtering error system preserves asymptotic stability as well as the $\boldsymbol {\mathcal {L}}_{\boldsymbol {\infty }}$ -norm of the transfer function from the external disturbance input to the filtering error output is below a specified bound. The filter design conditions for guaranteeing the prescribed peak-to-peak performance of the filtering error system are provided by a set of linear matrix inequalities.
