Massive multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) systems can suffer from coherent intercell interference due to the phenomenon of pilot contamination. This paper investigates a two-layer decoding method that mitigates both coherent and non-coherent interference in multi-cell Massive MIMO. To this end, each base station (BS) first estimates the channels to intra-cell users using either minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) or element-wise MMSE estimation based on uplink pilots. The estimates are used for local decoding on each BS followed by a second decoding layer where the BSs cooperate to mitigate inter-cell interference. An uplink achievable spectral efficiency (SE) expression is computed for arbitrary two-layer decoding schemes. A closed form expression is then obtained for correlated Rayleigh fading, maximum-ratio combining, and the proposed large-scale fading decoding (LSFD) in the second layer. We also formulate a sum SE maximization problem with both the data power and LSFD vectors as optimization variables. Since this is an NP-hard problem, we develop a low-complexity algorithm based on the weighted MMSE approach to obtain a local optimum. This paper concerns the uplink of multicell multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. To tackle the effect of pilot contamination that is generally viewed as a bottleneck in previous work, this paper presents a superimposed pilot (SP)-aided uplink channel estimation scheme and mathematically characterizes the impact that an SP has on the performance of such a very large MIMO system. It is shown that there are two types of interference components that do not vanish, even when the number of antennas $M$ grows to infinity. The first type, which is referred to as cross-contamination, is due to the correlation between the SP and data among different cells. The second type, which is referred to as self-contamination, is due to the dependence between channel estimation and estimation error. Cross-contamination is, in principle, similar to pilot contamination in a conventional pilot-based multicell MIMO system, whereas self-contamination is unique for the SP-aided scheme. Both theoretical and simulation results demonstrate that the SP-aided scheme can effectively reduce the estimation contamination by increasing the data frame size and, in turn, achieve a significant improvement over the spectral efficiency, in comparison with conventional pilot-based methods. In a time-division duplex multiple antenna system the channel state information (CSI) can be estimated using reverse training. In multi-cell multi-user massive MIMO systems, pilot contamination degrades CSI estimation performance and adversely affects massive MIMO system performance. In this paper we consider a subspace-based semi-blind approach where we have training data as well as information bearing data from various users (both in-cell and neighboring cells) at the base station (BS). Existing semi-blind approaches assume that the interfering users from neighboring cells are always at distinctly lower power levels at the BS compared with the in-cell users. This requires (perfect) power control. In this paper we do not make any such assumption. Unlike existing approaches, the BS estimates the channels of all users: in-cell and significant neighboring cell users, i.e., ones with comparable power levels at the BS. We exploit both subspace method using correlation as well as blind source separation using higher-order statistics. Finally, the estimated channels are used to detect information symbols, which, in turn, are used as pseudo-pilots to re-estimate the in-cell users’ channels. This paper studies the impact of additional pilot overhead for covariance matrix estimation in a time-division duplexed (TDD) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. We choose average uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) spectral efficiencies (SEs) as performance metrics for the massive MIMO system, and derive closed form expressions for them in terms of the additional pilot overhead. The expressions are derived by considering linear minimum mean squared error (LMMSE)-type and element-wise LMMSE-type channel estimates that represent LMMSE and element-wise LMMSE with estimated covariance matrices, respectively. Using these expressions, a detailed theoretical analysis of SE behavior as a function of pilot overhead for both LMMSE-type and element-wise LMMSE-type channel estimation are presented, followed by simulations, which also demonstrate and validate theoretical results. By virtue of large antenna arrays, massive MIMO systems have a potential to yield higher spectral and energy efficiency in comparison with the conventional MIMO systems. This paper addresses uplink channel estimation in massive MIMO-OFDM systems with frequency selective channels. We propose an efficient distributed minimum mean square error (MMSE) algorithm that can achieve near optimal channel estimates at low complexity by exploiting the strong spatial correlation among antenna array elements. The proposed method involves solving a reduced dimensional MMSE problem at each antenna followed by a repetitive sharing of information through collaboration among neighboring array elements. To further enhance the channel estimates and/or reduce the number of reserved pilot tones, we propose a data-aided estimation technique that relies on finding a set of most reliable data carriers. Furthermore, we use stochastic geometry to quantify the pilot contamination, and in turn use this information to analyze the effect of pilot contamination on channel MSE. In multi-user multiple-input–multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems that employ pilot-symbol aided channel estimation, the pilot-to-data power ratio (PDPR) has a large impact on the system performance. In this paper, we consider the problem of setting the PDPR in multi-cell MU-MIMO systems in the presence of channel estimation errors, intercell interference and pilot contamination. To analyze and address this problem, we first develop a model of the multi-cell MU-MIMO system and derive a closed-form expression for the mean squared error of the uplink received data symbols. Building on this result, we then propose two decentralized PDPR-setting algorithms based on game theoretic approaches that are applicable in multi-cell systems. We find that both algorithms converge to a Nash equilibrium and provide performance improvements over systems that do not properly set the PDPR, while they maintain different levels of fairness. In this paper, we study the design of secure communication for time-division duplex multi-cell multi-user massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems with active eavesdropping. We assume that the eavesdropper actively attacks the uplink pilot transmission and the uplink data transmission before eavesdropping the downlink data transmission of the users. We exploit both the received pilot’s and the received data signals for uplink channel estimation. We show analytically that when both the number of transmit antennas and the length of the data vector tend to infinity, the signals of the desired user and the eavesdropper lie in different eigenspaces of the received signal matrix at the base station, provided their signal powers are different. This finding reveals that decreasing (instead of increasing) the desired user’s signal power might be an effective approach to combat a strong active attack from an eavesdropper. Inspired by this observation, we propose a data-aided secure downlink transmission scheme and derive an asymptotic achievable secrecy sum-rate expression for the proposed design. For the special case of a single-cell single-user system with independent and identically distributed fading, the obtained expression reveals that the secrecy rate scales logarithmically with the number of transmit antennas. This is the same scaling law as for the achievable rate of a single-user massive MIMO system in the absence of eavesdroppers. The numerical results indicate that the proposed scheme achieves significant secrecy rate gains compared with alternative approaches based on matched filter precoding with artificial noise generation and null space transmission. In this paper, we consider the uplink channel parameter estimation problem in the presence of pilot contamination for massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems. We propose a parallel factor (PARAFAC)-based estimation scheme, which exploits the low-rank property of massive MIMO channels caused by the finite scattering in a physical environment. Specifically, we first parameterize the channel in terms of three parameters, i.e., fading coefficients, directions of arrival (DOAs), and delays; thereby, the channel is characterized via three equivalent PARAFAC models. Then, the proposed PARAFAC-based scheme is developed, which jointly estimates these three channel parameters using an alternating least squares (ALS) algorithm. Therein, we certify the identifiability of the three channel parameters of the PARAFAC models to mitigate the pilot contamination and state the convergence of the ALS algorithm, which guarantees that the three channel parameters can be uniquely determined with the proposed scheme. Moreover, to further reduce the computational complexity, two advanced schemes are proposed by antenna selection and reducing the estimation frequency of DOAs and delays, respectively. This paper considers a Massive MIMO network with $ {L}$ cells, each comprising a base stations (BS) with $ {M}$ antennas and $K$ single-antenna user equipments. Within this setting, we are interested in deriving approximations of the achievable rates in the uplink and downlink under the assumption that single-cell linear processing is used at each BS and that each intracell link forms an uncorrelated MIMO Rician fading channel matrix; that is, with a deterministic line-of-sight (LoS) path and a stochastic non-LoS component describing a spatial uncorrelated multipath environment. The analysis is conducted assuming that $ {N}$ and $ {K}$ grow large with a given ratio ${\textbf {N/K}}$ under the assumption that the data transmission in each cell is affected by channel estimation errors, pilot contamination, an arbitrary large scale attenuation and LoS components. Numerical results are used to prove that the approximations are asymptotically tight, but accurate for systems with finite dimensions. The asymptotic results are also used to evaluate the impact of LoS components. In this paper, a low complexity channel estimation method is proposed for two-dimensional (2-D) massive MIMO systems with uniform rectangular arrays of antennas. Instead of assuming independent fading between different transmit–receive antenna pairs, an array-structure-based physical channel model that characterizes the realistic scattering environments via the angles and gains associated with different propagation paths is studied. A 2-D Fourier-transform (FT) based on elevation and azimuth steering factors is applied to derive the spatial spectrum of received signals in angular domain at base station. Based on the spectrum analysis, the spatial spectrum of the received data is used to estimate the channel parameters, including direction of arrival (incident azimuth and elevation angles) and the path amplitude of each resolvable path. Since the channel coefficients are estimated in spatial domain and the proposed 2-D FT can be realized by fast-Fourier-transform, the computational complexity is reduced significantly. Pilot contamination is a limiting factor in multicell massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems because it can severely impair channel estimation. Prior works have suggested coordinating pilot design across cells in order to reduce the channel estimation error caused by pilot contamination. In this paper, we propose a method for coordinated pilot design using fractional programming to minimize the weighted mean squared-error (MSE) in channel estimation. In particular, we apply the recently proposed quadratic transform to the MSE expression which allows the effect of pilot contamination to be decoupled. The resulting problem reformulation enables the pilots to be optimized in closed form if they can be designed arbitrarily. When the pilots are restricted to a given set of orthogonal sequences, pilot optimization reduces to an assignment problem which can be solved by weighted bipartite matching. Furthermore, we consider the max-min fairness of data rates with orthogonal pilots and obtain an extension of the proposed method to correlated Rayleigh fading. Finally, simulations demonstrate the advantage of the proposed (orthogonal and nonorthogonal) pilot designs as compared with state-of-the-art methods in combating pilot contamination. This paper proposes a novel joint channel estimation and beamforming approach for multicell wideband massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems. With the proposed channel estimation and beamforming approach, we determine the number of cells $N_{c}$ that can utilize the same time and frequency resource while mitigating the effect of pilot contamination. The proposed approach exploits the multipath characteristics of wideband channels. Specifically, when the channel has a maximum of $L$ uncorrelated multipath taps (or correlated multipath taps satisfying modest criteria which is valid in most practical scenarios), it is shown that $N_{c}=L$ cells can estimate the channels of their user equipments (UEs) and perform beamforming while mitigating the effect of pilot contamination. The proposed approach can also be applied for general correlated multipath taps, and achieves good performance for this scenario as well. In a typical long term evolution (LTE) channel environment having delay spread $T_{d}=4.69\,\,\mu \text{s}$ and channel bandwidth $B=5$ MHz, we have found that $L=36$ cells can use this band. In practice, $T_{d}$ is constant for a particular environment and carrier frequency, and hence $L$ increases as the bandwidth increases. All the analytical expressions have been validated, and the superiority of the proposed design over the existing ones is demonstrated using extensive numerical simulations both for correlated and uncorrelated channels. In this paper, the receive spatial modulation (RSM) scheme is studied in the downlink of the multi-cell multi-user systems, assuming that the base station (BS) is equipped with a large number of antennas and serves a large number of multi-antenna users, while the user-antenna ratio is bounded. The system model is practical and applicable in a comprehensive manner, accounting for channel estimation, spatially correlated channels, pilot contamination, and path loss. Combining the concepts of RSM and massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), the spectral efficiency of linear preprocessing zero-forcing (ZF) and regularized ZF (RZF) methods is studied by approximating the probability of antenna detection and deriving a lower bound for the spatial-domain mutual information. With the aid of the large-system analysis, the deterministic equivalent expressions are provided for the achievable rates that are asymptotically exact. The Monte Carlo simulations validate this claim and show that for limited dimensions, the proposed deterministic equivalents yield accurate approximations, even for strongly correlated channels. The results further show that in comparison with the conventional massive MIMO systems with single-antenna users, equipping each user with multiple antennas and applying the RSM scheme enhances the spectral efficiency when each cell is not heavily loaded. This paper introduces a hybrid pilot-aided channel estimation technique for mitigating the effect of pilot contamination for the uplink of multi-cell multiuser massive MIMO systems. The proposed hybrid pilot is designed such that it enjoys the complementary advantages between time-multiplexed (TM) pilot and time-superimposed (TS) pilot and, thereby, allows superior solution to the conventional pilot schemes. We mathematically characterize the impact of hybrid pilot on the massive MIMO uplink by deriving a closed-form approximation for the uplink achievable rate. In the large-number-of-antennas regime, we obtain the asymptotically optimal solution for the hybrid pilot by jointly designing the TM pilot and the TS pilot. It is shown that either TM pilot or TS pilot has the advantages for large frame-size and limited frame-size transmission, respectively, while the hybrid pilot scheme can offer a superior performance to that employing either TM pilot or TS pilot. We consider a single-cell downlink time-division duplex-based massive MIMO communication in the presence of an adversary capable of jamming and eavesdropping simultaneously. We show that the massive MIMO communication is naturally resilient to no training-phase jamming attack in which the adversary jams only the data communication and eavesdrops both the data communication and the training. Specifically, we show that the secure degrees of freedom (SDoF) attained in the presence of such an attack are identical to the maximum DoF attainable under no attack. Furthermore, we evaluate the number of base station (BS) antennas necessary in order to establish information theoretic security without even a need for Wyner encoding for a given rate of information leakage to the attacker. Next, we show that things are completely different once the adversary starts jamming the training phase. Specifically, we consider the pilot contamination attack, called training-phase jamming in which the adversary jams and eavesdrops both the training and the data communication. We show that under such an attack, the maximum achieved SDoF is identical to zero. Furthermore, the maximum achievable secure rates of users also vanish, even in the asymptotic regime in the number of the BS antennas. We finally address this attack and show that, under training-phase jamming, if the number of pilot signals is scaled in a certain way and the pilot signal assignments can be hidden from the adversary, the users achieve an SDoF identical to the maximum achievable DoF under no attack. Non-cooperative cellular massive MIMO, combined with power control, is known to lead to significant improvements in per-user throughput compared with conventional LTE technology. In this paper, we investigate further refinements to massive MIMO, first, in the form of three-fold sectorization, and second, coordinated multi-point operation (with and without sectorization), in which the three base stations cooperate in the joint service of their users. For these scenarios, we analyze the downlink performance for both maximum-ratio and zero-forcing precoding and derive closed-form lower-bound expressions on the achievable rate of the users. These expressions are then used to formulate power optimization problems with two throughput fairness criteria: ${i}$) network-wide max-min fairness, and ii) per-cell max-min fairness. Furthermore, we provide centralized and decentralized power control strategies to optimize the transmit powers in the network. We demonstrate that employing sectorized antenna elements mitigates the detrimental effects of pilot contamination by rejecting a portion of interfering pilots in the spatial domain during channel estimation phase. Simulation results with practical sectorized antennas reveal that sectorization and multi-point coordination combined with sectorization lead to more than $1.7\times $ and $2.6\times $ improvements in the 95%-likely per-user throughput, respectively. This paper proposes a flexible pilot assignment method to jointly optimize the uplink and downlink data transmission in multi-cell Massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems with correlated Rayleigh fading channels. By utilizing a closed-form expression of the ergodic spectral efficiency (SE) achieved with maximum ratio processing, we formulate an optimization problem for maximizing the minimum weighted sum of the uplink and downlink SEs subject to the transmit powers and pilot assignment sets. This combinatiorial optimization problem is solved by two sequential algorithms: a heuristic pilot assignment is first proposed to obtain a good pilot reuse set and the data power control is then implemented. Pilot contamination attack is an important activity of active eavesdropping conducted by a malicious user during channel training phase. This attack is potentially harmful to the physical layer security. In this paper, motivated by the fact that frequency asynchronism could introduce divergence of the transmitted pilot signals between intended user and attacker, we propose a new uncoordinated frequency shift (UFS) scheme for detecting pilot contamination attack in multiple antenna system. During the reverse training phase of the UFS scheme, the legitimate user Bob deliberately introduces multiple random frequency shifts in the publicly known pilot sequence. Since eavesdropper Eve has no knowledge of these random frequency shifts, it is almost impossible for her to pretend exactly like Bob. This provides the opportunity to detect the presence of Eve. An attack detection algorithm is then developed based on source enumeration method. Both the asymptotic performance analysis and numerical results are provided to verify the proposed detection scheme. The proposed scheme is also enhanced based on noise power estimation to cope with attacks from a multi-antenna Eve. Furthermore, the proposed UFS scheme is extended by introducing general parameterized phase shifts. It is demonstrated that the proposed UFS scheme can achieve comparable detection performance as the existing superimposed random sequence based scheme, without sacrifice of legitimate channel estimation performance. Pilot contamination resulting from pilot reuse seriously restricts the communication performance of the cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) networks. To deal with this problem, an efficient pilot assignment scheme using a weighted graphic framework is proposed in this correspondence paper. Specifically, a novel metric is first introduced for capturing the severity of potential mutual pilot contamination in cell-free topology. On this basis, the weighted pilot contamination graph is constructed to depict the dynamic interference relationship corresponding to the network. Then, the pilot assignment optimization is mapped to the Max k-Cut problem, and a heuristic algorithm is exploited to realize pilot decontamination. Discriminatory channel estimation (DCE) is a recently developed strategy to enlarge the performance difference between a legitimate receiver (LR) and an unauthorized receiver (UR) in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless system. Specifically, it makes use of properly designed training signals to degrade channel estimation at the UR, which in turn limits the UR's eavesdropping capability during data transmission. In this paper, we propose a new two-way training scheme for DCE through exploiting a whitening-rotation (WR) based semiblind method. To characterize the performance of DCE, a closed-form expression of the normalized mean squared error (NMSE) of the channel estimation is derived for both the LR and the UR. Furthermore, the developed analytical results on NMSE are utilized to perform optimal power allocation between the training signal and artificial noise (AN). The advantages of our proposed DCE scheme are twofold: 1) Compared with the existing DCE scheme based on the linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) channel estimator, the proposed scheme adopts a semiblind approach and achieves better DCE performance; and 2) the proposed scheme is robust against active eavesdropping with the pilot contamination attack, whereas the existing scheme fails under such an attack. Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication is a promising technology for increasing spectral efficiency in wireless networks. Two of the main challenges massive MIMO systems face are degraded channel estimation accuracy due to pilot contamination and increase in computational load and hardware complexity due to the massive number of antennas. In this paper, we focus on the problem of channel estimation in massive MIMO systems, while addressing these two challenges: We jointly design the pilot sequences to mitigate the effect of pilot contamination and propose an analog combiner which maps the high number of sensors to a low number of RF chains, thus reducing the computational and hardware cost. We consider a statistical model in which the channel covariance obeys a Kronecker structure, and treat two special cases, corresponding to fully- and partially-separable correlations. We prove that under these models, the analog combiner design can be performed independently of the pilot sequences. Given the resulting combiner, we derive a closed-form expression for the optimal pilot sequences in the fully-separable case and suggest a greedy sum of ratio traces maximization (GSRTM) method for designing sub-optimal pilots in the partially-separable scenario. We demonstrate via simulations that our pilot design framework achieves lower mean squared error than the common pilot allocation framework previously considered for pilot contamination mitigation. Different from the existing works, in this paper we investigate the pilot allocation in multi-cell massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, aiming to maximize the spectral efficiency (SE) subject to the constraint that the number of user equipments (UEs) satisfying the quality of service (QoS) is maximized. Since the considered bilevel optimization problem that is tough to handle, we resort to the greedy algorithms with low computational complexity. We propose a QoS constrained (QC) pilot allocation scheme, which sequentially allocates the pilot sequence having large interference power to the UE with small signal power so that the number of UEs satisfying QoS can be maximized and then the SE can also be maximized. Massive MIMO uses a large number of antennas to increase the spectral efficiency (SE) through spatial multiplexing of users, which requires accurate channel state information. It is often assumed that regular pilots (RP), where a fraction of the time-frequency resources is reserved for pilots, suffices to provide high SE. However, the SE is limited by the pilot overhead and pilot contamination. An alternative is superimposed pilots (SP) where all resources are used for pilots and data. This removes the pilot overhead and reduces pilot contamination by using longer pilots. However, SP suffers from data interference that reduces the SE gains. This paper proposes the Massive-MIMO Iterative Channel Estimation and Decoding (MICED) algorithm where partially decoded data is used as side-information to improve the channel estimation and increase SE. We show that users with precise data estimates can help users with poor data estimates to decode. Numerical results with QPSK modulation and LDPC codes show that the MICED algorithm increases the SE and reduces the block-error-rate with RP and SP compared to conventional methods. In this paper, we analyze the spectral efficiency of multicell massive multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) systems with downlink training and a new pilot contamination precoding (PCP) scheme. First, we analyze the spectral efficiency of the beamforming training (BT) scheme with maximum-ratio transmission (MRT) precoding. Then, we derive an approximate closed-form expression of the spectral efficiency to find the optimal lengths of uplink and downlink pilots. Simulation results show that the achieved spectral efficiency can be improved due to channel estimation at the user side, but in comparison with a single-cell scenario, the spectral efficiency per cell in multicell scenario degrades because of pilot contamination. We focus on the practical case where the number of base station (BS) antennas is large but still finite and propose the BT and PCP (BT-PCP) transmission scheme to mitigate the pilot contamination with limited cooperation between BSs. We confirm the effectiveness of the proposed BT-PCP scheme with simulation, and we show that the proposed BT-PCP scheme achieves higher spectral efficiency than the conventional PCP method and that the performance gap from the perfect channel state information (CSI) scenario without pilot contamination is small. We address the problem of noise and interference corrupted channel estimation in massive MIMO systems. Interference, which originates from pilot reuse (or contamination), can in principle be discriminated on the basis of the distributions of path angles and amplitudes. In this paper, we propose novel robust channel estimation algorithms exploiting path diversity in both angle and power domains, relying on a suitable combination of the spatial filtering and amplitude based projection. The proposed approaches are able to cope with a wide range of system and topology scenarios, including those where, unlike in previous works, interference channel may overlap with desired channels in terms of multipath angles of arrival or exceed them in terms of received power. In particular, we establish analytically the conditions under which the proposed channel estimator is fully decontaminated. Massive multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) antenna system implies the use of a large number of base station (BS) antennas to serve a relatively small number of user terminals (UTs) for extraordinary spectral efficiency. However, its performance is limited by pilot contamination due to unavoidable reuse of pilot sequences from UTs in different cells. In this paper, we analyze the performance of massive MIMO zero-forcing (ZF) systems using the time-shifted pilot scheme, which was known to combat pilot contamination effectively using conjugate beamforming if there is a very large number of antennas. We derive expressions for achievable sum rates and the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratios (SINRs) of forward and reverse links if the number of BS antennas is finite. Then, the impact of system parameters, such as cell radius, transmit power, group number (a parameter related to the time-shifted pilot scheme), BS antenna number, etc., on the system performance are revealed. Our model embraces a series of previous works as special cases. Moreover, we compare the performance of conjugate and ZF precoders, from which a simple but effective large-scale fading-based UT scheduling scheme is proposed to enhance the system throughput. Pilot contamination is known to be one of the main bottlenecks for massive multi-input multioutput (MIMO) networks. For moderately large antenna arrays (of importance to recent/emerging deployments) and correlated MIMO, pilot contamination may not be the dominant limiting factor in certain scenarios. To the best of our knowledge, a rigorous characterization of the achievable rates and their explicit dependence on the angular spread (AS) is not available in the existing literature for moderately large antenna array regime. In this paper, considering eigen-beamforming (EBF) precoding, we derive an exact analytical expression for achievable rates in multicell MIMO systems under pilot contamination, and characterize the relation between the AS, array size, and respective user rates. Our analytical and simulation results reveal that the achievable rates for both the EBF and the regularized zero-forcing precoders follow a nonmonotonic behavior for increasing AS when the antenna array size is moderate. In a massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, the serious pilot contamination problem severely restricts its ability to boost the spectrum utilization. To tackle this problem, the conventional concept of softly reusing the spectrum resources for the inner regions of the neighboring cells has been extended to reuse the pilot resources so as to accommodate more users. Alternatively, properly selecting the users to reuse the pilots among the neighboring cells can alleviate the pilot contamination problem as well. In this paper, we delicately integrate these two concepts to properly reuse the pilots allocated to the outer regions of the cells. By well designing the hazard- and secure-edge regions to manage the pilot reuse, the increment of interference can be effectively suppressed, and, consequently, the more accommodated users can contribute to the remarkably higher sum data rates. Massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) is expected to be one of the enabling technologies for fifth-generation cellular networks. One of the major challenges in massive MIMO systems is the accurate joint estimation of the channel and noise variance, which significantly affects the performance of wireless communications in practical scenarios. In this paper, we first derive a novel maximum likelihood estimator for the noise variance at the receiver of massive MIMO systems considering practical impairments such as pilot contamination. Then, this estimate is used to compute the minimum mean square error estimate of the channel. In order to measure the performance of the proposed noise variance estimator, we derive the corresponding Cramér–Rao lower bound (CRLB). Simulation results show that the estimator is efficient in certain scenarios, outperforming existing approaches in the literature. Furthermore, we develop the estimator and the CRLB for equal and different noise variance at the receive antennas. The combination of the large-scale multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) and orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) transmissions is a promising candidate for future wireless communication systems. We investigate a quality of service (QoS) guaranteed user-scheduling algorithm for large-scale MIMO-OFDM systems, where pilots are assigned to served users. In general, a wireless channel concentrates its energy on a specific region in the angle and delay domains. We suggest to reuse pilots based on this channel property in a macrocellular environment, thus reducing pilot overhead significantly. In the presence of contamination caused by the pilot reuse, we analyze the asymptotic behavior and design an interference cancelation (IC) precoder. For both the simple matched filter (MF) precoder and the sophisticated IC precoder, we derive achievable rates under pilot contamination, which are metrics for QoS. Further, according to the analysis under a special case, the number of QoS-guaranteed users proves to be maximized when an equispaced property in the angle domain is satisfied. The theoretical result facilitates a low-complexity user-scheduling algorithm. Numerical results confirm our analysis and proposed pilot scheme, and they show that the proposed scheduling algorithm can select out the maximum served users with guaranteed QoS. We study the robust linear equalizer for the uplink of massive multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) systems with multicell pilot reuse. We use the worst-case approach for robust design to combat pilot contamination. When the number of base station (BS) antennas is large, we build a novel model to indicate the relationship between the instantaneous channel matrix and the imperfect channel estimation in the presence of channel model uncertainty. Based on this model, we formulate the robust equalizer design problem into a min–max problem. Furthermore, we transform the min–max problem into an unconstrained one, and the optimality conditions are derived. With the resulting optimality conditions, two iterative algorithms and a simple approximation method are proposed to compute the optimal robust equalizers. Simulations are adopted to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithms and the approximation method. Compared with the conventional equalizers, the proposed robust equalizers achieve a better bit error rate (BER) performance, particularly in the regime of high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), where pilot contamination is significant. Massive MIMO promises large spectral and power efficiency gains. However, pilot contamination limits these aspired gains. In this paper, we propose a structured, i.e., non-random, pilot hopping and a weighted moving average channel estimation for time-varying massive MIMO systems. The proposed algorithm diversifies the contaminating (interfering) sources, such that all the users enjoy the hopping advantages. We analyze the performance of multi-cell network, where the base stations perform matched filtering or zero-forcing for data detection. Using polynomial expansion approximations, we obtain achievable rates that are tight even at finite (not very large) number of antennas. It is shown that the spectral efficiency gain achieved by pilot hopping is not a monotonic function of the pilot reuse factor $\beta $ in some cases and, therefore, brings to attention that careful cell planning is required when applying pilot hopping. Moreover, the proposed algorithm involves a weighted moving average that uses the previously obtained channel estimates (of the preceding blocks) if they are correlated with the current one. In this paper, superimposed pilots are introduced as an alternative to time-multiplexed pilot and data symbols for mitigating pilot contamination in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. We propose a non-iterative scheme for uplink channel estimation based on superimposed pilots and derive an expression for the uplink signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) at the output of a matched filter employing this channel estimate. Based on this expression, we observe that power control is essential when superimposed pilots are employed. Moreover, the quality of the channel estimate can be improved by reducing the interference that results from transmitting data alongside the pilots, and an intuitive iterative data-aided scheme that reduces this component of interference is also proposed. Approximate expressions for the uplink SINR are provided for the iterative data-aided method as well. In addition, we show that a hybrid system with users utilizing both time-multiplexed and superimposed pilots is superior to an optimally designed system that employs only time-multiplexed pilots, even when the non-iterative channel estimate is used to build the detector and precoder. We also describe a simple approach to implement this hybrid system by minimizing the overall inter- and intracell interference. We investigate the heterogeneous cellular network (HetNet) where the macrocell base stations (MBSs) are equipped with very large antenna arrays. Since such a combined massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) and HetNet system operates in the co-channel time-division duplex mode, to mitigate the pilot contamination effect to channel estimation, the number of users that can be served simultaneously is limited by the available pilot resources in the conventional designs. We propose a pilot reuse scheme for massive MIMO–HetNet to increase the user capacity. Specifically, location-aware channel estimation is employed at the MBSs to mitigate the severe pilot contamination introduced by pilot reuse, and we propose a novel pilot assignment algorithm to reduce the interference in HetNets. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed scheme can support more users and increase both the uplink and the downlink sum-rate capacity, in comparison to the conventional scheme, particularly when the antenna number at the MBSs is sufficiently large. The users at cell edge of a massive multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) system suffer from severe pilot contamination (PC), which leads to poor quality of service (QoS). To enhance the QoS for these edge users, soft pilot reuse (SPR) combined with multicell block diagonalization (MBD) precoding is proposed. Specifically, the users are divided into two groups according to their large-scale fading coefficients, which are referred to as the center users, who only suffer from modest PC, and the edge users, who suffer from severe PC. Based on this distinction, the SPR scheme is proposed for improving the QoS for the edge users, whereby a cell-center pilot group is reused for all cell-center users in all cells, whereas a cell-edge pilot group is applied for the edge users in the adjacent cells. By extending the classical block diagonalization precoding to a multicell scenario, the MBD precoding scheme projects the downlink transmit signal onto the null space of the subspace spanned by the intercell channels of the edge users in adjacent cells. Thus, the intercell interference contaminating the edge users' signals in the adjacent cells can be efficiently mitigated, and hence, the QoS of these edge users can be further enhanced. Our theoretical analysis and simulation results demonstrate that both the uplink and downlink rates of the edge users are significantly improved, albeit at the cost of the slightly decreased rate of center users. The pilot scheme currently used in 5th generation (5G) cellular networks assigns the same set of orthogonal pilot signals to all cells. This results in inter-cell interference, also known as pilot contamination, which can significantly degrade performance, especially in massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems. To mitigate this interference, we propose a novel Dual Pilot Scheme (DPS) that assigns a slightly modified set of nearly-orthogonal pilot signals. DPS is a general scheme that can be implemented in any wireless communication system, including 5G and beyond. We demonstrate the integration of DPS in a massive MIMO system in both microscopic and macroscopic levels and analytically prove that DPS enables more accurate estimates of the channel state information in the minimum mean-squared error sense, under the independent identically distributed (i.i.d.) and the correlated Rayleigh fading wireless communication channel models. We propose a location-aware pilot allocation algorithm for a massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) network with high-mobility users, where the wireless channels are subject to Rician fading. Pilot allocation in massive MIMO is a hard combinatorial problem and depends on the locations of users. As such, it is highly complex to achieve the optimal pilot allocation in real-time for a network with high-mobility users. Against this background, we propose a low-complexity pilot allocation algorithm, which exploits the behavior of line-of-sight (LOS) interference among the users and allocate the same pilot sequence to the users with small LOS interference. Our examination demonstrates that our proposed algorithm significantly outperforms the existing algorithms, even with localization errors. Specifically, for the system considered in this work, our proposed algorithm provides up to 37.26% improvement in sum spectral efficiency (SE) and improves the sum SE of the worst interference-affected users by up to 2.57 bits/sec/Hz, as compared to the existing algorithms. Given the critical dependence of broadcast channels by the accuracy of channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT), we develop a general downlink model with zero-forcing precoding, applied in realistic heterogeneous cellular systems with multiple-antenna base stations (BSs). Specifically, we take into consideration imperfect CSIT due to pilot contamination, channel aging due to users relative movement, and unavoidable residual additive transceiver hardware impairments (RATHIs). Assuming that the BSs are Poisson distributed, the main contributions focus on the derivations of the upper bound of the coverage probability and the achievable user rate for this general model. We show that both the coverage probability and the user rate are dependent on the imperfect CSIT and RATHIs. More concretely, we quantify the resultant performance loss of the network due to these effects. We depict that the uplink RATHIs have equal impact, but the downlink transmit BS distortion has a greater impact than the receive hardware impairment of the user. Thus, the transmit BS hardware should be of better quality than user's receive hardware. Furthermore, we characterise both the coverage probability and user rate in terms of the time variation of the channel. It is shown that both of them decrease with increasing user mobility, but after a specific value of the normalized Doppler shift, they increase again. Actually, the time variation, following the Jakes autocorrelation function, mirrors this effect on coverage probability and user rate. Finally, we consider space-division multiple access (SDMA), single-user beamforming (SU-BF), and baseline single-input single-output transmission.
