The code base of system software is growing fast, which results in a large number of vulnerabilities: for example, 296 CVEs have been found in Xen hypervisor and 2195 CVEs in Linux kernel. To reduce the reliance on the trust of system software, many researchers try to provide trusted execution environments (TEEs), which can be categorized into two types: non-privileged TEEs and privileged TEEs. Non-privileged TEEs (e.g., Intel SGX) are extensible, but cannot protect security services like virtual machine introspection (VMI) due to the lack of system-level semantics. On the contrary, privileged TEEs (e.g., the secure world of ARM TrustZone) have system-level semantics, but any additional service implemented in the privileged TEE directly increases the TCB of the entire system. In this article, we propose a new design of TEE to support system-level security services and achieve better extensibility with a small TCB. Each TEE instance of the proposed design is named a Colony. Specifically, we introduce a secure monitor for isolation and capability management. Each Colony is assigned capabilities to access only necessary system-level semantics. We use the new TEE to build four security services, including secure device accessing, VMI tools, a system call tracer, and a much more complex service to virtualize ARM TrustZone with multiple Colonies. We have implemented the system on ARMv7 and ARMv8 platforms, in Xen hypervisor and Linux kernel, and perform a detailed evaluation to show its efficiency. 1. The integrity of science and engineering research is grounded in assumptions of rigor and transparency on the part of those engaging in such research. HPC community effort to strengthen rigor and transparency take the form of reproducibility efforts. In a recent survey of the SC conference community, we collected information about the SC reproducibility initiative activities. We present the survey results in this article. Results show that the reproducibility initiative activities have contributed to higher levels of awareness on the part of SC conference technical program participants, and hint at contributing to greater scientific impact for the published papers of the SC conference series. Stringent point-of-manuscript-submission verification is problematic for reasons we point out, as are inherent difficulties of computational reproducibility in HPC. Future efforts should better decouple the community educational goals from goals that specifically strengthen a research work's potential for long-term impact through reuse 5–10 years down the road. Numbers of citations of outstanding conference papers (OCPs) of IEEE Nuclear and Space Radiation Effects Conferences (NSRECs) from 1966 to 2017 are compared with citations of the most highly cited papers (HCPs) of the corresponding special issues of the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON NUCLEAR SCIENCE (TNS), as well as average numbers of citations and cumulative $h$ index, $h_{\mathrm {cum}}$ , for all TNS papers published in the same year. 85% of NSREC OCPs are cited at a higher rate than the average for all TNS articles in that year. 55% of NSREC OCP citation totals are higher than $h_{\mathrm {cum}}$ for TNS in that year; these rank among the ~8% most highly cited TNS papers for that year. In ~10% of cases, the NSREC OCP is also the most HCP. Similarly high citation impact is found for papers nominated as candidates for OCPs. Radiation effects papers published in annual NSREC special issues comprise a significant fraction of all TNS articles cited $h_{\mathrm {cum}}$ times or more. These results support the use of $h_{\mathrm {cum}}$ as a metric of citation impact in this work and show that the NSREC OCP process generally meets awards criteria guidelines for impact. Potential reasons for variations in citation rates are discussed, and recommendations are provided to enhance the awards process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, a novel repetitive control scheme is presented and discussed, based on the so-called B-spline filters. These dynamic filters are able to generate a B-spline trajectory if they are fed with the sequence of control points defining the curve. Therefore, they are ideal tools for generating online reference signals with the prescribed level of smoothness for driving dynamic systems, possibly together with a feedforward compensator. In particular, a continuous zero phase error tracking controller (ZPETC) can be used for tracking control of nonminimum phase systems but because of its open-loop nature it cannot guarantee the robustness with respect to modeling errors and exogenous disturbances. For this reason, ZPETC and trajectory generator have been embedded in a repetitive control scheme that allows to nullify interpolation errors even in nonideal conditions, provided that the desired reference trajectory and the disturbances are periodic. This paper is based on the results presented in the conference paper [L. Biagiotti, F. Califano, and C. Melchiorri, “Repetitive control of non-minimum phase systems along b-spline trajectories,” in Proc. IEEE 55th Conf. Decis. Control, 2016, pp. 5496–5501.], where asymptotic stability of the overall control scheme has been proved mathematically, but extends such results with an experimental validation based on a nonminimum phase system. Different models of the same physical system have been identified and used in the implementation of this model-based control scheme, allowing a real evaluation of the relationship between control system performance and model accuracy. Since its creation, the ImageNet-1k benchmark set has played a significant role as a benchmark for ascertaining the accuracy of different deep neural net (DNN) models on the image classification problem. Moreover, in recent years it has also served as the principal benchmark for assessing different approaches to DNN training. Finishing a 90-epoch ImageNet-1k training with ResNet-50 on a NVIDIA M40 GPU takes 14 days. This training requires $10^{18}$1018 single precision operations in total. On the other hand, the world's current fastest supercomputer can finish $3 \times 10^{17}$3×1017 single precision operations per second (according to the Nov 2018 Top 500 results). If we can make full use of the computing capability of the fastest supercomputer, we should be able to finish the training in several seconds. Over the last two years, researchers have focused on closing this significant performance gap through scaling DNN training to larger numbers of processors. Most successful approaches to scaling ImageNet training have used the synchronous mini-batch stochastic gradient descent (SGD). However, to scale synchronous SGD one must also increase the batch size used in each iteration. Thus, for many researchers, the focus on scaling DNN training has translated into a focus on developing training algorithms that enable increasing the batch size in data-parallel synchronous SGD without losing accuracy over a fixed number of epochs. In this paper, we investigate supercomputers' capability of speeding up DNN training. Our approach is to use a large batch size, powered by the Layer-wise Adaptive Rate Scaling (LARS) algorithm, for efficient usage of massive computing resources. Our approach is generic, as we empirically evaluate the effectiveness on five neural networks: AlexNet, AlexNet-BN, GNMT, ResNet-50, and ResNet-50-v2 trained with large datasets while preserving the state-of-the-art test accuracy. Compared to the baseline of a previous study from Goyal et al. [1] , our approach shows higher test accuracy on batch sizes that are larger than 16K. When we use the same baseline, our results are better than Goyal et al. for all the batch sizes (Fig. 20). Using 2,048 Intel Xeon Platinum 8160 processors, we reduce the 100-epoch AlexNet training time from hours to 11 minutes. With 2,048 Intel Xeon Phi 7250 Processors, we reduce the 90-epoch ResNet-50 training time from hours to 20 minutes. Our implementation is open source and has been released in the Intel distribution of Caffe, Facebook's PyTorch, and Google's TensorFlow. The difference between this paper and the conference-version of our work [2] includes: (1) we implement our approach on Google's cloud Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) platform, which verifies our previous success on CPUs and GPUs. (2) we scale the batch size of ResNet-50-v2 to 32K and achieve 76.3 percent accuracy, which is better than the 75.3 percent accuracy achieved in our conference paper. (3) we apply our approach to Google's Neural Machine Translation (GNMT) application, which helps us to achieves 4× speedup on the cloud TPUs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This issue of the IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science (TNS) is devoted to the 22nd IEEE-NPSS Real Time Conference (RT2020) on Computing Applications in Nuclear and Plasma Sciences held for the first time entirely online in October 2020. The article offers tips on scientific writing and manuscript preparation, and states that if a document fails to communicate the information efficiently so that the reader can understand, then the communication is considered meaningless. Topics discussed include differences between papers of journals and those presented at conference proceedings, organization of manuscripts and writing styles, and common writing problems and word choice and usage.

Our community publishes peer-reviewed journal, magazine, and conference papers and articles sharing a commitment to originality and to quality content and writing. These papers vary in their characteristics and style, depending on their objectives and their targeted readership. The IEEE Publication Services and Products Board (PSPB) Operations Manual (OM) also provides guidelines differentiating these paper types. There is confusion sometimes, however, concerning the features of magazine papers in particular. Some authors, especially early-career authors, do not fully appreciate certain differences between magazine papers and their journal, transaction, and letter counterparts. This can create a challenge for magazine editors and may result in delay, or rejection, of papers that could have been accepted if written with a better understanding of what magazines are about. We focus our attention here on this issue as it applies to IEEE Communications Magazine (ComMag) in particular. Our goal is to help our new and/or young authors who want to publish in ComMag to customize their writing to the nature of this magazine and enable them to author papers with higher chances of acceptance. With this Special Issue, we are publishing 81 peer-reviewed manuscripts, a selection from the best work presented in June 2019 at the 28th IEEE Symposium on Fusion Engineering (SOFE), Jacksonville, FL, USA. This is the sixth SOFE Special Issue that IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON PLASMA SCIENCE (TPS) has published, a tradition that started with the 2009 SOFE in order to afford attendees the opportunity to publish an expanded version of their oral or poster presentations in a refereed journal. It has become a popular option. With each successive SOFE, more authors take advantage of the possibility offered by TPS to have their conference papers gain wider exposure and be cited by others working in fusion engineering and its related disciplines. Readers benefit as well. For example, this issue features a total of 22 papers on ITER and Wendelstein 7-X, a unique collection of papers on two projects that sit at the forefront of fusion engineering. We are pleased to present the technical papers for IEEE VR 2018: the 25th IEEE Conference on Virtual Reality and 3D User Interfaces, held March 18-22, 2018 in Reutlingen, Germany. IEEE VR 2018 features two categories of submissions: (i) VR Journal Papers, and (ii) VR Conference Papers. Both categories have their own program committees, submission processes, and review processes. This year, 178 submissions were submitted to the Journal track from which 29 were accepted as articles to IEEE TVCG (16.3%). All of these will be presented at the IEEE VR 2018 conference, along with 6 additional papers in the VR area that were published in IEEE TVCG during the past year. Furthermore, 6 submission (3.4%) were recommended for a regular issue of TVCG with major revisions with reviewer continuity. Each of the papers in this special issue went through a rigorous two-round review process. All accepted journal papers are published in a special issue of IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics (TVCG). The Latin American Workshop on Plasma Physics (LAWPP) is a regional meeting with global undertones, whose main purpose is to provide a forum for research carried out in Latin America, while presenting the main trends at international level on the various areas of plasma physics. Therefore, it fosters the establishment of scientific collaborations between Latin American researchers, as well as between them and researchers in developed countries, providing a proper forum to assess their results. The 16th version is to be carried out in Mexico City on 4-8 September, 2017. A special issue on selected papers of the 16th Latin American Workshop on Plasma Physics (LAWPP 2017) will be published within the next four months in the IEEE Transactions on Plasma Science. While it will be based on the Plenary and Invited talks, the guest editors, aided by a technical committee, covering a wide scope of specialties, will invite some of the best papers to be submitted to this issue, and send them to suitable referees. It gives us great pleasure to introduce this special section on outstanding papers from the ACM MobiSys 2012 conference, for which we were honored to be the program committee cochairs. The conference was held in June 2012 and included 32 high-quality papers selected from 182 submissions, a record high for both paper submissions and paper acceptances. The conference???s call-for-papers informed authors that a few outstanding papers would be considered for a fast-tracked special section in the IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing (TMC). The selection process for the papers included in this special section was a byproduct of the selection process for the MobiSys 2012 Best Paper Award. Immediately after the MobiSys 2012 program committee meeting, we asked the committee members to nominate accepted papers for the Best Paper Award. Based on the responses we received, five papers with the most nominations were selected as candidates for the award. Their nominations were kept confidential until the opening of the conference. We then asked the program committee and external reviewer panel members to volunteer for the Best Paper Award committee to determine the final best paper and select three out of the five nominated papers for this special section. Based on the responses and conflicts of interest, four members of the program committee and one member of the external reviewer panel formed the Best Paper Award committee. At the conference, this committee selected the best paper and the three papers to be fast-tracked for this special section. The paper review process for the selected papers followed the standard procedure for fast-tracked TMC special sections. The authors were asked to submit a journal version with an explanation of how they addressed the reviews and feedback received at the conference. Note that each of these three papers received five or more conference reviews and had gone through a shepherding process to address reviewer comments for the final, camera-ready version. As required by the TMC fast-tracking procedure, we invited at least two reviewers for each submission. At least one reviewer was a MobiSys program committee member who reviewed the corresponding conference submission and another was not a member of program committee. In the end, the review process produced three very highquality papers that we are proud to present to the readers of TMC. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The editor reflects on the special issue of the periodical which is based on the 2012 International Microwave Symposium held on June 17-22, 2012 in Montreal, Quebec.
