Mourning corresponds to a theme with which the population and health professionals find it difficult to deal, especially when it comes to the death of children, as it is a problem that involves even more suffering. This work seeks to understand the Brazilian scenario of maternal/infant care in its interface with grief. Through the findings, it is possible to affirm that the process of maternal loss is equivalent to a narcissistic wound capable of bewildering the temporal reference, triggering frames of psychic suffering. The importance of follow-up by the psychology professional through support groups, clinical therapy or even follow-up by family health units is highlighted. It emphasizes the need for constant research on the subject, so that intervention strategies can be delimited with the bereaved population, as well as for better preparation of professionals.
