Entropy‐stabilized oxides (ESOs), such as (Mg0.2Co0.2Ni0.2Cu0.2Zn0.2)O, have recently gained significant interest as novel anodes for lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) due to their stable crystal structure and robust lithium‐storage properties. In this work, (Mg0.2Co0.2Ni0.2Cu0.2Zn0.2)O oxides with different morphologies are prepared by electrospinning and solvothermal method and are applied as anode active materials for LIBs. It is found that different morphologies possess different characteristics, namely particle size, particle size range, and defect density, which have a significant effect on the electrochemical behavior. The most active (Mg, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) ESO shows outstanding electrochemical properties in terms of high reversible capacity (480 mAh g–1 at 20 mA g–1), superior rate capability (206 mAh g–1 at 2 A g–1), and excellent cycling stability (390 mAh g–1 at 500 mA g–1 after 300 cycles). The strategy demonstrates the importance of engineering microstructures in tailoring the electrochemical performance. Entropy‐stabilized (Mg0.2Co0.2Ni0.2Cu0.2Zn0.2)O oxides with different particle size, particle size range, and defect density are prepared by electrospinning and solvothermal method and tested as anode active materials for lithium‐ion batteries. Rational design of cost‐effective, high performance and stable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts in both acidic and alkaline media holds the key to the future hydrogen‐based economy. Herein, we introduce an effective approach of simultaneous non‐metal (S) and metal (Fe or Mn) doping of MoP to achieve excellent HER performance at different pH. The catalysts show remarkable overpotentials at −10 mA cm−2 of only 65 and 68 mV in 0.5 M H2SO4, and 50 and 51 mV in 1.0 M KOH, respectively, as well as much higher turnover frequencies compared to undoped MoP. Furthermore, the catalysts exhibit outstanding long‐term stability at a fixed current of −10 mA cm−2 for 40 h. The effects of both dopants, such as electronic structure modification and enhancement of the intrinsic activity, increase of the electrochemically active surface area, and formation of coordinatively unsaturated edge sites, act cooperatively to accelerate the HER at both pH media. Additionally, the presence of oxophilic Mn and Fe at the surface results in Mn or Fe oxide/hydroxide species that promote the dissociation of water molecules in alkaline electrolyte. This work introduces a facile and effective design principle that could pave the way towards engineering highly active HER catalysts for a wide pH range. Metal (Mn or Fe) and non‐metal (S) dual doped MoP catalysts were synthesiszed by reductive pyrolysis of the corresponding Mn,Mo‐ and Fe,Mo‐phosphonates precursors, in the presence of elemental S. The derived catalysts showed remarkable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity in acidic and alkaline media. The dual doping process endowed MoP with proper hydrogen binding energy thus enhancing the HER in acidic media. Titanium dioxide is a promising anode for efficient lithium‐ion storage in terms of low cost, good structural stability, and inherent safety. However, its performance in Li‐ion storage is hindered by poor electronic conductivity. In this work, a solvothermal approach was applied for the synthesis of Nb‐doped TiO2 nanocrystals with Nb content up to 33 at. %. The enhanced electronic conductivity and favorable electrochemical kinetics led to superior specific capacity, rate capability, and cycling stability compared to pristine TiO2. For the optimum dopant content of 21 at. %, a specific capacity of 58 mAh g−1 was reached at 10 A g−1 compared to just 28 mAh g−1 for pure TiO2, in addition to almost 20 % higher capacity retention after prolonged cycling. The strategy in the current work can be easily extended to the design of other high‐performance electrode materials for energy storage.

Two‐dimensional (2D) reduced graphene oxide (rGO) is often combined with metal oxides for energy‐storage applications, owing to its unique properties. Here, we compare the electrochemical performance of Nb2O5‐rGO and amorphous carbon‐coated‐Nb2O5 composites, synthesized in similar conditions. The composite made of Nb2O5 and amorphous carbon (using 1,3,5‐triphenylbenzene as carbon source) outperforms the Nb2O5‐rGO counterpart as a high rate anode electrode material in Li‐ion and Na‐ion half‐cells and hybrid supercapacitors, delivering specific capacities of 134 mAh g−1 at 25 C against 98 mAh g−1 for the rGO‐based composite (in Li electrolyte) and 125 mAh g−1 at 20 C against 98 mAh g−1 (in Na electrolyte). The organic molecules, which are the precursor of the amorphous carbon, control the size and coat the metal oxide particles more efficiently, leading to more extensive carbon‐oxide contacts, which benefits the energy‐storage performance.

Sections PDFPDF Tools Share Abstract Lithium and sodium thiophosphates (and related compounds) have recently attracted attention because of their potential use as solid electrolytes in solid‐state batteries. These compounds, however, exhibit only limited stability in practice as they react with the electrodes. The decomposition products partially remain redox active hence leading to excess capacity. The redox activity of thiophosphates is explicitly used to act as electrode for sodium‐ion batteries. Copper thiophosphate (Cu3PS4) is used as a model system. The storage behavior between 0.01 and 2.5 V versus Na+/Na is studied in half cells using different electrolytes with 1 m NaPF6 in diglyme showing the best result. Cu3PS4 shows highly reversible charge storage with capacities of about 580 mAh g−1 for more than 200 cycles @120 mA g−1 and about 450 mAh g−1 for 1400 cycles @1 A g−1. The redox behavior is studied by operando X‐ray diffraction and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. During initial sodiation, Cu3PS4 undergoes a conversion reaction including the formation of Cu and Na2S. During cycling, the redox activity seems dominated by sulfur. Interestingly, the capacity of Cu3PS4 for lithium storage is smaller, leading to about 170 mAh g−1 after 200 cycles. The results demonstrate that thiophosphates can lead to reversible charge storage over several hundred cycles without any notable capacity decay.

Hierarchical core–shell (C–S) heterostructures composed of a NiO shell deposited onto stacked‐cup carbon nanotubes (SCCNTs) are synthesized by atomic layer deposition (ALD). A film of NiO particles (0.80–21.8 nm in thickness) is uniformly deposited onto the inner and outer walls of the SCCNTs. The electrical resistance of the samples is found to increase of many orders of magnitude with the increasing of the NiO thickness. The response of NiO–SCCNT sensors toward low concentrations of acetone and ethanol at 200 °C is studied. The sensing mechanism is based on the modulation of the hole‐accumulation region in the NiO shell layer upon chemisorption of the reducing gas molecules. The electrical conduction mechanism is further studied by the incorporation of an Al2O3 dielectric layer at NiO and SCCNT interfaces. The investigations on NiO–Al2O3–SCCNT, Al2O3–SCCNT, and NiO–SCCNT coaxial heterostructures reveal that the sensing mechanism is strictly related to the NiO shell layer. The remarkable performance of the NiO–SCCNT sensors toward acetone and ethanol benefits from the conformal coating by ALD, large surface area of the SCCNTs, and the optimized p‐NiO shell layer thickness followed by the radial modulation of the space‐charge region.

Acid catalysis plays an important role in biomass conversion processes for producing chemicals and fuels. We report a relatively simple procedure for synthesizing versatile, strong acid catalysts based on carbon and carbon–silica composites with sulfonic acid groups. The process involves chemical activation of a sulfonic acid organic precursor at low temperature. The synthesis conditions can be modified to tune the surface composition, texture, and the acid properties of the materials towards superior catalytic performances. Molecular level insights into the nature and strength of the acid sites were gained by combining high resolution XPS and 1H-decoupled 31P MAS NMR spectroscopy of adsorbed triethylphosphine oxide. These materials are effective acid catalysts for the conversion of different biomass-derived chemicals to useful bio products such as furanic ethers and levulinate esters.

Die kürzliche globale COVID-19-Pandemie hat deutlich gezeigt, dass hohe medizinische Kosten eine große Herausforderung für unser Gesundheitssystem darstellen. Daher besteht eine wachsende Nachfrage nach personalisierten tragbaren Geräten zur kontinuierlichen Überwachung des Gesundheitszustands von Menschen durch nicht-invasive Erfassung physiologischer Signale. Diese Dissertation fasst die Forschung zur Laserkarbonisierung als Werkzeug für die Synthese flexibler Gassensoren zusammen und präsentiert die Arbeit in vier Teilen. Der erste Teil stellt ein integriertes zweistufiges Verfahren zur Herstellung von laserstrukturiertem (Stickstoff-dotiertem) Kohlenstoff (LP-NC) ausgehend von molekularen Vorstufen vor. Der zweite Teil demonstriert die Herstellung eines flexiblen Sensors für die Kohlendioxid Erfassung basierend auf der Laserumwandlung einer Adenin-basierten Primärtinte. Die unidirektionale Energieeinwirkung kombiniert mit der tiefenabhängigen Abschwächung des Laserstrahls ergibt eine neuartige geschichtete Sensorheterostruktur mit porösen Transducer- und aktiven Sensorschichten. Dieser auf molekularen Vorläufern basierende Laserkarbonisierungsprozess ermöglicht eine selektive Modifikation der Eigenschaften von gedruckten Kohlenstoffmaterialien. Im dritten Teil wird gezeigt, dass die Imprägnierung von LP-NC mit Molybdäncarbid Nanopartikeln die Ladungsträgerdichte verändert, was wiederum die Empfindlichkeit von LP-NC gegenüber gasförmigen Analyten erhöht. Der letzte Teil erläutert, dass die Leitfähigkeit und die Oberflächeneigenschaften von LP-NC verändert werden können, indem der Originaltinte unterschiedliche Konzentrationen von Zinknitrat zugesetzt werden, um die selektiven Elemente des Sensormaterials zu verändern. Basierend auf diesen Faktoren zeigte die hergestellte LP-NC-basierte Sensorplattform in dieser Studie eine hohe Empfindlichkeit und Selektivität für verschiedene flüchtige organische Verbindungen., The recent global COVID-19 pandemic clearly displayed that the high costs of medical care on top of an aging population bring great challenges to our health systems. As a result, the demand for personalized wearable devices to continuously monitor the health status of individuals by non-invasive detection of physiological signals, thereby providing sufficient information for health monitoring and even preliminary medical diagnosis, is growing. This dissertation summarizes my research on laser-carbonization as a tool for the synthesis of functional materials for flexible gas sensors. The whole work is divided into four parts. The first part presents an integrated two-step approach starting from molecular precursor to prepare laser-patterned (nitrogen-doped) carbon (LP-NC). The second part shows the fabrication of a flexible LP-NC sensor architecture for room-temperature sensing of carbon dioxide via laser conversion of an adenine-based primary ink. By the unidirectional energy impact in conjunction with depth-dependent attenuation of the laser beam, a novel layered sensor heterostructure with a porous transducer and an active sensor layer is formed. This molecular precursor-based laser carbonization method enables the modification of printed carbon materials. In the third part, it is shown that impregnation of LP-NC with molybdenum carbide nanoparticle alters the charge carrier density, which, in turn, increases the sensitivity of LP-NC towards gaseous analytes. The last part explains that the electrical conductivity and surface properties of LP-NC can be modified by adding different concentrations of zinc nitrate into the primary ink to add selectivity elements to the sensor materials. Based on these factors, the LP-NC-based sensor platforms prepared in this study exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity for different volatile organic compounds.

In dieser Arbeit wurden fluoreszierende MIP-Partikel hergestellt, um polare Analyten von biologischer und ökologischer Bedeutung zu analysieren, zum Beispiel den Krebs-Biomarker Sialinsäure (SA) und die Herbizide Glyphosat (GPS), Haloxyfop P und Fenoxaprop P. Die MIP-Schale wurde auf Siliziumdioxid und siliziumdioxid-beschichtete Polystyrol (PS)-Kernpartikel synthetisiert und enthielt einen Fluoreszenzfarbstoff, dessen Signal in Anwesenheit der Zielanalyten verstärkt wurde. Die Leistungsfähigkeit aller MIP-Partikel wurde durch den Vergleich ihres Bindungsverhaltens mit den nicht geprägten Polymer (NIP)-Partikeln und/oder durch ihre Diskriminierungsfähigkeit gegenüber konkurrierenden Analyten bewertet. Fluoreszierende Monomer für die MIP-Synthese erwiesen sich als vorteilhaft, da sowohl die Bindungsleistung als auch die Assoziationskonstanten einfacher bestimmt werden konnten. Als Alternative zur traditionellen Wasserstoffbrückenbindung zwischen Analyt und Bindungseinheit des Farbstoffes in unpolaren Lösungsmitteln, kann die Deprotonierung-Protonierung von harnstoffhaltigen Farbstoffen als Sensing-Mechanismus in polaren Medien wie DMF verwendet werden. Darüber hinaus führte die Verwendung eines „Dummy“-Analyten für die NIP-Partikel-Synthese zu einer Polymerschicht mit ähnlichen Eigenschaften wie die der MIP-Partikel, womit "Dummy"-NIPs als deutlich bessere Kontrollpartikel herangezogen werden konnten. Insgesamt erwies sich die Bestimmung der Diskriminierung der MIPs gegenüber konkurrierenden Analyten als konsistenteres Maß für die Leistungsbeurteilung. Mit Siliziumdioxid beschichtete, farbstoffdotierte PS-Partikel erwiesen sich als vielseitige Plattform für das Aufwachsen fluoreszierender MIP-Schalen, um zweifach fluoreszierende MIPs zu erhalten. Das Vorhandensein eines Kontrollsignals ist vorteilhaft für die Korrektur instrumenteller Schwankungen während analytischer Tests., Fluorescent MIP particles were prepared to target highly polar analytes of biological and environmental significance, namely sialic acid (SA) and glyphosate (GPS), haloxyfop P and fenoxaprop P. Silica and silica-coated polystyrene (PS) particles were used as core supports on which a MIP shell was synthesized. In all systems, the MIP shell contained a fluorescent dye with urea sensing motifs whose signal was enhanced in the presence of the target analyte. The performance of all MIP particles was evaluated by comparing their binding behaviour to that of non-imprinted polymer (NIP) controls and/or determining their discrimination ability against competing analytes. It was found that the application of fluorescent monomers in MIP synthesis is advantageous due to simplified determination of binding performance and binding parameters such as association constants. It was also shown that deprotonation-reprotonation of urea containing dyes can be used as a sensing mechanism in polar media such as DMF, as an alternative to traditional hydrogen bonding in non-polar aprotic solvents. In addition, the results showed that the inclusion of a “dummy” template during NIP synthesis led to the formation of a polymer layer with similar properties as the MIP, and thus, “dummy” NIPs provided a more relevant comparison for MIP binding. Overall, the discrimination of MIPs against competing analytes was found to be a more consistent measure of MIP performance. When a urea containing dye was used to prepare MIPs targeting anions by hydrogen bonding in non-polar media, the choice of counterion used during imprinting influenced the binding behaviour of the resulting MIPs and must be carefully chosen. Lastly, silica-coated dye-doped PS was found to be a versatile platform for the grafting of fluorescent MIP shells to achieve dual fluorescent MIPs, and the presence of a control signal was beneficial in correcting instrumental fluctuations during analytical assays.

Photoschalter sind Moleküle, die eine reversible lichtgesteuerte Umwandlung zwischen zwei Zuständen mit unterschiedlichen Eigenschaften durchlaufen. In den letzten zehn Jahren hat der Einbau dieser photochromen Moleküle in intelligente, auf Stimuli ansprechende Materialien zunehmende Aufmerksamkeit erregt, da sie die einzigartige Fähigkeit bieten, makroskopische Eigenschaften mit einem externen optischen Stimulus reversibel zu verstärken und zu verändern. Die begrenzte Leistung von Photoschaltern in festen Medien bleibt eine Herausforderung. In diesem Zusammenhang werden in dieser Arbeit zwei wichtige Aspekte näher untersucht. Erstens der Prozess der Entwicklung neuer Photoschalter mit maßgeschneiderten Eigenschaften und zweitens die Implementierung von Photoschaltern in feste Materialien und die damit verbundenen Herausforderungen. Im ersten Teil dieser Arbeit wurde Dynamisch-kovalente Chemie (DCC) verwendet, um die Entdeckung und Entwicklung einer neuartigen Klasse von Photoschaltern mit drei Zuständen zu beschleunigen. Die dynamische Natur der zentralen Doppelbindung von α-Cyanodiarylethenen wurde genutzt, um ein thermodynamisches Gleichgewicht mit anderen Arylacetonitrilen herzustellen. Die entwickelte Methode kombiniert eine schnelle Diversifizierung mit einer Rasterung auf spezifische Eigenschaften, die durch einen externen Stimulus aufgedeckt werden, und ermöglicht die effiziente Untersuchung der Beziehung zwischen Struktur und den zugehörigen Eigenschaften. Im zweiten Teil der Arbeit wird die Entwicklung und die Synthese eines Zweikomponenten-Kern-Schale-MOFs mit einem internen nicht-funktionalisierten Kompartiment, das von einer dünnen photoschaltbaren Außenschale bedeckt ist, vorgestellt. Diese Strategie ermöglicht ein effizientes Schalten des Chromophors und die resultierende dünne „intelligente“ Schale fungiert als modulare kinetische Barriere für die molekulare Gastdiffusion in das Material, die durch Licht gesteuert werden kann., Photoswitches are molecules that undergo a reversible light-triggered conversion between two states with different properties. In the past decade, the incorporation of these photochromic molecules in smart stimuli-responsive materials has gained increased attention as it offers the unique ability to reversibly amplify and change macroscopic properties with an external optical stimulus. The limited performance of photoswitches in solid mediums remains a challenge. In this context two important aspects are studied in more detail in this thesis. First, the process of developing new photoswitches with tailored properties and second, the implementation of photoswitches in solid materials and the challenges associated with it. In the first part of this thesis dynamic covalent chemistry (DCC) was used to accelerate the discovery and development of a novel three-state photoswitch class. The dynamic nature of the central double bond of α-cyanodiarylethenes was exploited to establish a thermodynamic equilibrium with other arylacetonitriles. The developed DCC tool combines fast and efficient diversification with screening for specific photochemical properties revealed by an external stimulus, enabling the rapid study of the relationship between structure and the associated properties. The second part of this thesis summarizes the design and synthesis of a two-component core-shell MOF with an internal non-functionalized compartment covered by a thin photoswitchable outer shell. This strategy allows efficient switching of the chromophore and the resulting thin “smart” shell acts as a modular kinetic barrier for molecular guest diffusion into the material that can be controlled by light.

Die vorliegende Arbeit konzentriert sich auf die Synthese von neuartigen hohlen MoSx-Nanomaterialien mit kontrollierbarer Größe und Form durch die kolloidale Template Methode. Ihre möglichen Anwendungen in wässrigen Energiespeichersystemen, einschließlich Superkondensatoren und Li-Ionen-Batterien (LIBs), wurden untersucht. Im ersten Teil wurde eine neue Nanostruktur aus hohlen Kohlenstoff-MoS2-Kohlenstoff-nanoplättchen erfolgreich durch eine L-Cystein unterstützte hydrothermale Methode unter Verwendung von Gibbsit als Templat und Polydopamin (PDA) als Kohlenstoffvorläufer synthetisiert. Nach dem Kalzinieren und Ätzen des Gibbsit Templates wurden gleichförmige Hohlplättchen erhalten, die aus einer sandwichartigen Anordnung von teilweise graphitischem Kohlenstoff und zweidimensional geschichteten MoS2 Flocken bestehen. Die Plättchen haben eine ausgezeichnete Dispergierbarkeit und Stabilität in Wasser sowie eine gute elektrische Leitfähigkeit aufgrund des durch die Kalzinierung von Polydopaminbeschichtungen erzeugten Kohlenstoffs gezeigt. Das Material wird dann in einem symmetrischen Superkondensator mit 1 M Li2SO4 als Elektrolyt aufgebracht, der eine spezifische Kapazität von 248 F/g (0.12 F/cm2) bei einer konstanten Stromdichte von 0.1 A/g und eine ausgezeichnete elektrochemische Stabilität über 3000 Zyklen aufweist, was darauf hindeutet, dass hohle Kohlenstoff-MoS2-Kohlenstoffnanoplättchen vielversprechende Materialien als Kandidaten für Superkondensatoren sind. Im zweiten Teil wurde 21 molare LiTFSI, das sogenannte "Wasser-in-Salz" (WIS) Elektrolyt, in Superkondensatoren mit hohlen Kohlenstoffnanoplättchen als Elektrodenmaterial untersucht. Im Vergleich zu dem im ersten Teil verwendeten 1 molaren Li2SO4-Elektrolyten wurden bei dem vorliegenden WIS Elektrolyt signifikante Verbesserungen in einem breiteren und stabilen Potentialfenster festgestellt, das durch die geringere Leitfähigkeit mit dem Gegenstück leicht beeinflusst wird. Die elektrochemische Impedanzspektroskopie (EIS) wurde ausgiebig eingesetzt, um einen Einblick in die Reaktionsmechanismen der WIS-Superkondensatoren zu erhalten. Zusätzlich wurde auch der Einfluss der Temperatur auf die elektrochemische Leistung im Temperaturbereich zwischen 15 und 55 °C untersucht, was eine hervorragende spezifische Kapazität von 128 F/g bei dem optimierten Zustand von 55 °C ergab. Die EIS-Messungen deckten die Abnahme der angepassten Widerstände mit der Temperaturerhöhung und umgekehrt auf und beleuchteten direkt die Beziehung zwischen elektrochemischer Leistung und Arbeitstemperatur von Superkondensatoren für zuverlässige praktische Anwendungen. Im dritten Teil wurde MoS3, ein amorphes, kettenförmig strukturiertes Übergangsmetall Trichalcogenid, als vielversprechende Anode in "Wasser-in-Salz" Li-Ionen-Batterien (WIS-LIBs) nachgewiesen. Die in diesem Teil verwendeten hohlen MoS3-Nanosphären wurden mittels einer skalierbaren Säurefällungsmethode bei Raumtemperatur synthetisiert, wobei sphärische Polyelektrolytbürsten (SPB) als Schablonen verwendet wurden. Beim Einsatz in WIS-LIBs mit LiMn2O4 als Kathodenmaterial erreicht das präparierte MoS3 eine hohe spezifische Kapazität von 127 mAh/g bei einer Stromdichte von 0.1 A/g und eine gute Stabilität über 1000 Zyklen sowohl in Knopf- als auch in Pouch-Zellen. Der Arbeitsmechanismus von MoS3 in WIS-LIBs wurde auch durch Ex-situ-Röntgenbeugungsmessungen (XRD) untersucht. Während des Betriebs wird MoS3 während der anfänglichen Li-Ionen-Aufnahme irreversibel in Li2MoO4 umgewandelt und dann allmählich in eine stabilere und reversible LixMoOy-Phase (2≤y≤4)) entlang der Zyklen umgewandelt. Amorphes Li-defizientes Lix-mMoOy/MoOz wird bei der Delithiierung gebildet. Die Ergebnisse der vorliegenden Studie zeigen einfache Ansätze zur Synthese hohler MoSx-Nanomaterialien mit kontrollierbarer Morphologie unter Verwendung einer Template-basierten Methode, die auf die vielversprechende Leistung von MoSx für wässrige Energiespeicheranwendungen zurückzuführen sind. Die elektrochemischen Untersuchungen von hohlen MoSx-Nanomaterialien in wässrigen Elektrolyten geben Einblick in die Reaktionsmechanismen von wässrigen Energiespeichersystemen und treiben die Entwicklung von Metallsulfiden für wässrige Energiespeicheranwendungen voran., The present thesis focuses on the synthesis of novel hollow MoSx nanomaterials with controllable size and shape through the colloidal template method. Their possible applications in aqueous energy storage systems, including supercapacitors and Li-ion batteries (LIBs), have been studied. In the first part, hollow carbon-MoS2-carbon nanoplates have been successfully synthesized through an L-cysteine-assisted hydrothermal method by using gibbsite as the template and polydopamine (PDA) as the carbon precursor. After calcination and etching of the gibbsite template, uniform hollow platelets, which are made of a sandwich-like assembly of partial graphitic carbon and two-dimensional layered MoS2 flakes, have been obtained. The platelets have shown excellent dispersibility and stability in water, and good electrical conductivity due to carbon coating generated by the calcination of polydopamine. The material is then applied in a symmetric supercapacitor using 1 M Li2SO4 as the electrolyte, which exhibits a specific capacitance of 248 F/g (0.12 F/cm2) at a constant current density of 0.1 A/g and an excellent electrochemical stability over 3000 cycles, suggesting that hollow carbon-MoS2-carbon nanoplates are promising candidate materials for supercapacitors. In the second part, 21 m LiTFSI, so-called “water-in-salt” (WIS) electrolyte, has been studied in supercapacitors with hollow carbon nanoplates as electrode materials. In comparison with 1 M Li2SO4 electrolyte used in the first part, significant improvements on a broader and stable potential window have been revealed in the present WISE, which is slightly influenced by the lower conductivity with the counterpart. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) has been extensively employed to provide an insight look on the formation of solid electrolyte interphase in the WIS-supercapacitors. Additionally, the effect of temperature on the electrochemical performance has also been investigated in the temperature range between 15 and 55 °C, yielding eminent specific capacitance of 128 F/g at the optimized condition of 55 °C. The EIS measurements disclosed the decrease of fitted resistances with the increase of temperature and vise versa, directly illuminating the relationship between electrochemical output and working temperature of supercapacitors for reliable practical applications. In the third part, MoS3, an amorphous chain-like structured transitional metal trichalcogenide, has been demonstrated as a promising anode in the “water-in-salt” Li-ion batteries (WIS-LIBs). Hollow MoS3 nanospheres used in this part have been synthesized via a scalable room-temperature acid precipitation method using spherical polyelectrolyte brushes (SPB) as the template. When applied in WIS-LIBs with LiMn2O4 as the cathode material, the prepared MoS3 achieves a high specific capacity of 127 mAh/g at the current density of 0.1 A/g and good stability over 1000 cycles in both coin cells and pouch cells. The working mechanism of MoS3 in WIS-LIBs has also been studied by ex-situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. During operation, MoS3 undergoes irreversible conversion to Li2MoO4 during the initial Li ion uptake, and is then gradually converted to a more stable and reversible LixMoOy (2≤y≤4)) phase along cycling. Amorphous Li-deficient Lix-mMoOy/MoOz is formed upon delithiation. The results in the present thesis demonstrate facile approaches for synthesizing hollow MoSx nanomaterials with controllable morphologies using a template-based method, which attribute to the promising performance of MoSx for aqueous energy storage applications. The electrochemical studies of hollow MoSx nanomaterials in aqueous electrolytes provide insight into the reaction mechanisms of aqueous energy storage systems and push forward the development of metal sulfides for aqueous energy storage applications.

Zwei Modellreaktionen wurden mit thermoresponsiven Nanoreaktoren untersucht. Die Reduktion von 4-Nitrophenol und von Kaliumhexacyanidoferrat(III) mit Natriumborhydrid. Die Nanoreaktoren bestehen aus einem Polystyrol Kern, umgeben von einer Hydrogel Schale aus Poly-(N-Isopropylacrylamid). Die Reaktionen werden auf der Oberfläche von Metall Nanopartikeln in der Hydrogel Schale katalysiert. In einer auf Gold- und Silberkatalysatoren fokussierten Literaturstudie zeigte sich, dass der geschwindigkeitsbestimmende Reaktionsschritt zwischen beiden Metallen variieren könnte. Kinetische Studien mit Silber haben gezeigt, dass ein erfolgreich auf Gold angewandtes Modell modifiziert werden muss um auf Silber anwendbar zu sein und haben gezeigt, dass sich die Kinetik der Reaktion auf beiden Metallen unterscheidet. Die weitere Analyse ergab die typische, nicht der Arrhenius Abhängigkeit folgende, Abhängigkeit der Reaktionsrate von der Temperatur und hat gezeigt, dass die Partitionierung der Reaktanden im Hydrogel für das kinetische Modell relevant ist. Die Reduktion von Kaliumhexacyanidoferrat(III) auf Gold hat gezeigt, dass elektrostatische Effekte hier eine maßgebliche Rolle spielen. Ein kinetisches Modell wurde erarbeitet, dass die relevanten Einflussfaktoren durch Hydrogel, Geometrie der Nanoreaktoren, diffusions- und elektrostatische Effekte miteinbezieht. Die gewonnenen Daten konnten mittels eines auf der Auswertung des stationären Zustands basierenden Modells erfolgreich gefittet werden. Hierbei wurde das komplexe Zusammenspiel von elektrostatischen Effekten, deren Abschirmung und Einfluss auf die Diffusion sowie die Reaktionsrate gezeigt. Mit wenigen physikalisch aussagekräftigen Fitparametern konnten alle beobachteten Effekte erfolgreich erklärt werden. Der Vergleich der Reduktion von 4-Nitrophenol und von Hexacyanidoferrat(III) zeigt hierbei die entscheidenden Faktoren sowohl für reaktions- als auch für diffusionskontrollierte Reaktionen in thermoresponsiven Hydrogelen. Two model reactions were investigated with thermoresponsive core-shell nanoreactors, the reduction of 4-nitrophenol and of potassium hexacyanoferrate(III), both reduced with sodium borohydride. The nanoreactors comprise of a polystyrene core surrounded by a hydrogel shell of poly-N-isopropylacrylamide (PNIPAM) crosslinked with N,N’-methylenebisacrylamide. Metal nanoparticles are immobilized inside the hydrogel shell on the surface of which the model reactions are catalyzed. In the reduction of 4-nitrophenol, special emphasis is laid on the reduction on gold and silver catalysts. A literature review of mechanistic as well as kinetic studies reveals that the rate determining step may differ between the two catalyst metals. Kinetic investigations with a silver catalyst reveal that the kinetic model derived previously for gold catalysts needs to be modified for the kinetic analysis in this study, confirming a difference in the kinetics for both catalyst metals. The temperature dependent analysis reveals the typical non-Arrhenius dependency of the reaction rate and shows that the partition ratio of the reactants is relevant for the kinetics. The reduction of potassium hexacyanoferrate(III) on gold reveals that electrostatic effects play a major role in this reaction. A new kinetic model is derived, accounting the relevant influence factors of the hydrogel, the nanoreactor geometry, diffusional and electrostatic effects. With a stationary state approach the experimental data are fitted successfully, revealing the complex interplay of electrostatic effects, the screening thereof and the influence on diffusion and reaction rate. With only a few physically meaningful fit parameters all observed effects can be explained successfully. The comparison of the reduction of 4-nitrophenol and potassium hexacyanoferrate(III) highlights the decisive factors in both, reaction and diffusion controlled reactions inside thermoresponsive hydrogels.

Übergangsmetallfluoridverbindungen sind sehr vielversprechende Kandidaten für die nächste Generation von Kathoden für Alkaliionenbatterien. Dennoch verhindern einige Nachteile dieser Materialklasse ihre Anwendung in Energiespeichermedien. Metallfluoride haben eine stark isolierende Wirkung, außerdem bewirken die Mechanismen beim Lade-/Entladevorgang, große Volumenänderungen und somit eine drastische Reorganisation des Materials, welche nur geringfügig umkehrbar ist. Um diese Nachteile zu reduzieren, werden in dieser Arbeit innovative Syntheserouten für die Umwandlung von Metallfluoridverbindungen sowie deren Anwendung in Alkaliionenbatterien vorgestellt. Im ersten Teil werden MFx Verbindungen (M = Co, Fe; x = 2 oder 3) untersucht. Diese Materialien zeigen eine hohe Ausgangskapazität aber nur bei sehr geringen C-Raten und zudem sehr geringe Zyklisierbarkeiten. Ex-situ-XRD und -TEM zeigen, dass die geringe Umkehrbarkeit der Prozesse hauptsächlich aus der Umwandlungsreaktion während des Be-/Entladens resultieren. Im zweiten Teil werden sowohl die Synthesen als auch die elektrochemischen Eigenschaften von Perowskiten aus Übergangsmetallfluoriden vorgestellt. NaFeF3 zeigt hierbei exzellente Leistungen und Reversibilitäten. Die Untersuchung der Mechansimen durch ex-situ und operando XRD während der Be- und Entladeprozesse hinsichtlich verschiedener Alkalisysteme zeigt, dass das kristalline Netzwerk über den Zyklus erhalten bleibt. Dies führt zur hohen Reversibilität und hohen Leistung selbst bei hohen C-Raten. Der Erhalt der Kristallstruktur wird durch elektrochemische Stabilisierung der kubischen Konformation von FeF3 ermöglicht, welche normalerweise erst bei hohen Temperaturen (400 °C) beobachtet wird und durch geringere Reorganisationen innerhalb des Kristallgerüsts erklärt werden kann. Ähnliche elektrochemische Eigenschaften können für KFeF3 und NH4FeF3 beobachtet werden, wobei erstmalig von Ammoniumionen als Ladungsträger in Alkaliionensystemen berichtet wird., Metal fluoride compounds appear as very appealing candidates for the next generation of alkali-ion battery cathodes. However, many drawbacks prevent this family of compounds to be applicable to storage systems. Metal fluorides demonstrate a high insulating character, and the mechanisms involved during the discharge/charge processes atom engender large volume changes and a drastic reorganization of the material, which induces poor reversibility. In order to answer these problematics, the present thesis reports the elaboration of innovative synthesis routes for transition metal fluoride compounds and the application of these fluoride materials in alkali-ion battery systems. In a first part, MFx compounds (M = Co, Fe; x = 2 or 3) are studied. Those compounds exhibit high initial capacity but very poor cyclability and low C-rate capabilities. Ex-situ X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy demonstrate that the low reversibility of the processes is mainly due to the conversion reaction occurring during their discharge/charge. In the second part, the syntheses of transition metal fluoride perovskites are reported, as well as their electrochemical properties. NaFeF3 demonstrates excellent performances and reversibility. The study of the mechanisms occurring during its charge/discharge processes towards different alkali systems by ex-situ and operando X-ray diffraction reveals that its crystalline framework is maintained along the cycles, resulting in high reversibility and excellent C-rate performance. This retention of the crystal framework is possible by an electrochemical stabilization of a cubic conformation of FeF3, which is usually only observable at high temperature (400 °C), and can be explained by lower reorganizations within the crystal framework. Similar electrochemical properties could be observed for KFeF3 and NH4FeF3, where ammonium ions are reported for the first time as a charge carrier in alkali-ion systems.

In dieser Dissertation wird der Einfluss unterschiedlicher Sauerstoff-Koordinationsgeometrien um ein zentrales Kobaltatom evaluiert. Genauer werden Oxide, die tetraedrisch und oktaedrisch koordiniertes Kobalt enthalten, synthetisiert und charakterisiert. Zudem wird ihre Aktivität in Hinblick auf die Sauerstoffentwicklungsreaktion (OER) unter alkalischen Bedingungen untersucht. Die elektrochemischen Analysen zeigen dabei, dass Materialien, die Kobalt in tetraedrischer Sauerstoffkoordination enthalten, die besseren Katalysatorvorläufer für die OER sind. Weiterhin kann demonstriert werden, dass das Herauslösen von inaktiven Metallen aus einer Struktur die Aktivität erhöht. Darauf basierend wird das neue Material Zn0.35Co0.65O vorgeschlagen. Es kristallisiert in der Wurtzitstruktur und enthält nur tetraedrisch koordinierte Atome. In alkalischen Lösungen wandelt sich die Wurtzitstruktur über die Zwischenstufe Co(OH)2 zum gamma-Co(O)OH um, und nahezu alles Zink wird aus der Struktur herausgelöst. Dadurch wird ein Material mit einer großen elektrochemisch aktiven Oberfläche gewonnen, das unterkoordinierte CoO(6-x) Oktaeder als aktive Zentren für die OER enthält. Hierdurch wird eine herausragende katalytische Leistung erreicht. Um weitere Einblicke in die OER zu generieren, wird Diffuse Reflexions UV/Vis (DRUV) Spektroskopie verwendet. Es werden neuartige Durchflusszellendesigns vorgeschlagen, die es erlauben, DRUV Spektren während der Katalyse aufzunehmen, d.h. operando. Durch diesen spektroelektrochemischen Ansatz werden Veränderungen der Katalysatoren während der OER beobachtet. So kann die Phasenumwandlung von Zn0.35Co0.65O erfolgreich verfolgt werden. Ebenso kann gezeigt werden, dass CoAl2O4 und Co2SnO4 nur an ihrer Oberfläche katalytische Aktivität aufweisen. Durch den Vergleich mit ex situ Analysen werden eindeutige Struktur-Eigenschaftsbeziehungen vorgeschlagen und tiefere Einsichten in die katalytisch aktiven Strukturmotive erhalten. In this PhD thesis, the influence of different coordination geometries of oxygen atoms around a central cobalt atom is evaluated. Specifically, oxides containing tetrahedral and octahedral coordinated cobalt are synthesized, characterized and their activity towards the OER under alkaline conditions is evaluated. The electrochemical analyses reveal, that materials containing cobalt in tetrahedral oxygen coordination are better precatalysts for the OER. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that leaching of inactive metals from a structure increases the activity as well. Based on the previous mentioned, the new material Zn0.35Co0.65O is proposed. It crystallizes in the wurtzite structure and contains solely tetrahedrally coordinated atoms. In alkaline solutions, it transforms from wurtzite structure via a hydroxide to gamma-Co(O)OH, and nearly all Zn is leached from the structure. By this, a material with a large electrochemically active surface area is generated, that contains under-coordinated CoO(6-x) octahedra as active centers for the OER. Thus, outstanding catalytic performance is achieved. To generate further insights into the OER, diffuse reflectance ultraviolet visible (DRUV) spectroscopy is facilitated. Novel flow-cell designs are proposed, that allow to record DRUV spectra of catalysts under working conditions, i.e. operando. By this spectroelectrochemical approach, changes the catalysts undergo during the OER are observed. The phase transitions of Zn0.35Co0.65O are successfully followed, and it can be further shown, that CoAl2O4 and Co2SnO4 are only active at their surface. By comparison to ex situ analyses, clear structure-activity correlations are proposed, and deeper insights in the catalytically active structural motifs are obtained.

Die zwei Chelatbildner für Schwermetallionen, Carboxymethylthio- (CMT) und Piperazinyl- (PPz), wurden erfolgreich über die direkte kathodische Elektroreduktion ihres Aryl diazoniumsalzes auf Wasserstoff–terminiertes Silizium (Si-H)- und auf Gold (Au)-Substratoberflächen aus den Derivaten: 4-(Carboxymethylthio)benzenediazoniumsalz [4-CMTBD]+BF4- und 4-(Piperazinyl)benzenediazoniumsalz [4-PPzBD]+BF4- abgeschieden. Die elektrochemische Anbindung wurde unter Verwendung von zyklischer Voltammetrie (CV) und chronoamperometrie (CA) Techniken durchgeführt. Die IRSE-Spektren bestätigten die Anwesenheit der organischen CMT- und PPz-Komplexbildnergruppen durch ihre charakteristischen Absorptionsbanden auf den elektrotransplantierten Si(111) - und Au-Substraten, was eine erfolgreiche Oberflächenfunktionalisierung anzeigt. Die Analyse, der bei der chronoamperometrischen Elektroreduktion gemessenen Ströme, der beiden Diazoniumkationen [4-CMTBD]+ und [4-PPzBD]+ sowohl auf Si (111)-H- als auch auf Au-Oberfläche, zeigt eine Korrelation mit der kinetischen Reaktionsgleichung zweiter Ordnung während der frühen Stufen der jeweiligen elektrochemischen Deposition. Die Behandlung der funktionalisierten Oberflächen, Si(4-CMTB) mit Cu- und Pb- Ionen, und Si(4-PPzB) mit Cu-Ionen unter niedrigen hydrothermalen Druckbedingungen führte zur Bildung von organometallischen Chelatkomplexen auf den Oberflächen. Die Aufnahme von Cu-Ionen sowohl auf der Si(4-CMTB)- als auch auf der Si(4-PPzB)-Oberfläche wurde ebenfalls mittels XPS untersucht. Die Schwermetallionen-chelatisierenden Nanokompositoberflächen, die in dieser Arbeit erfolgreich hergestellt und charakterisiert wurden, stellen neuartige funktionelle Materialien dar, die potentiell technische Interesse haben könnten., The two heavy-metal-ion (HMI) chelating groups, carboxymethylthio- (CMT), and piperazinyl- (PPz), were successfully electrografted on Si(111)-H and Au substrate surfaces via the direct cathodic electroreduction of their aryl diazonium salt derivatives: the 4-(carboxymethylthio)benzenediazonium salt [4-CMTBD]+BF4-, and the 4-(piperazinyl)benzenediazonium salt [4-PPzBD]+BF4-. The IRSE spectra confirmed the successful surface functionalization by the CMT and PPz chelating groups by their characteristic absorption bands on the electrografted Si(111) and Au substrates. The analysis of the chronoamperometric electroreduction of the two diazonium cations [4-CMTBD]+ and [4-PPzBD]+, on both Si(111)-H and Au surfaces, revealed that the rate of decay in currents correlates with the second-order kinetic rate law during the early stages of the electrografting reactions. The treatment of the functionalized surfaces, Si-(4-CMTB) with the Cu and Pb ions, and Si-(4-PPzB) with Cu ions under low pressure hydrothermal conditions led to the formation of organometallic chelate complexes on the surfaces. The uptake of Cu ions on both the Si-(4-CMTB) and Si-(4-PPzB) surfaces was also elucidated by XPS measurements. The HMI chelating nanocomposite surfaces successfully fabricated and characterized in this work constitute novel functional materials that may be of potential engineering interests.

In dieser Arbeit wurden zwei katalytische Modellreaktionen studiert. Zunächst die katalytische Reduktion von p-Nitrophenol (Nip) mit Natriumborhydrid (BH_4^-). Diese verläuft entlang der direkten Route: Dabei wird Nip über p-Hydroxylaminophenol (Hx) zum Produkt p-Aminophenol (Amp) reduziert. Ein kinetisches Modell wird vorgestellt, dass die Reaktion auf Basis des Langmuir-Hinshelwood (LH) Mechanismus beschreibt. Die Lösung der Gleichungen gibt die Nip Konzentration als Funktion der Zeit, welche direkt mit den experimentellen Daten verglichen werden kann. Werden als Katalysator auf sphärischen Polyeletrolytbürsten stabilisierte Gold Nanopartikel (SPB-Au) verwendet, zeigt sich eine gute Übereinstimmung und unterstreicht die Allgemeingültigkeit der direkten Route. Der zweite Teil beschäftigt sich mit der katalytischen Oxidation von 3,3’,5,5’-Tetramethylbenzidin (TMB) durch Wasserstoffperoxid (H_2O_2) an SPB-Pt Nanopartikeln. Dabei wurden die Katalyse mithilfe zweier Modelle analysiert: Michaelis-Menten (MM) und Langmuir-Hinshelwood (LH). Im MM Modell wird die Oxidation von TMB durch die Nanopartikel mit der Peroxidase katalysierten TMB Oxidation unter Annahme des Ping-Pong Mechanismus verglichen. Es wurde gezeigt, dass die häufig verwendete Analyse der initialen Reaktionsraten große Fehler verursacht und zu inkonsistenten Ergebnissen führt. Dies zeigt dass dieses Vorgehen zu Analyse der Oxidation von TMB nicht geeignet ist. Im LH Modell wird angenommen dass H_2O_2 und TMB im ersten Schritt auf der Oberfläche der Nanopartikel adsorbieren. Das LH Modell mit Produktinhibition ermöglicht hierbei eine zufriedenstellende Beschreibung der kinetischen Daten bis zu einem Umsatz von 40 %. Die gesamte Analyse zeigt, dass das Langmuir-Hinshelwood Modell die bessere Näherung zur Beschreibung der Kinetik der Nanopartikel katalysierten TMB Oxidation bietet In this work, two catalytic model reactions were studied using different metallic nanoparticles in aqueous solution. One is the catalytic reduction of p-nitrophenol (Nip) by sodium borohydride (BH_4^-). The reaction proceeds in the following route: Nip is first reduced to p-hydroxylaminophenol (Hx) which is further reduced to the final product p-aminophenol (Amp). Here we present a full kinetic scheme according to Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism (LH). The solution of the kinetic equations gives the concentration of Nip as the function of time, which can be directly compared with the experimental data. Satisfactory agreement is found for reactions catalyzed by Au nanoparticles immobilized in spherical polyelectrolyte brushes (SPB-Au) verifying the validity of the reaction route. In the second part, we present a study on the catalytic oxidation of 3,3’,5,5’-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) by hydrogen peroxide (H_2O_2) with SPB-Pt nanoparticles. The catalysis was analyzed by two different models: Michaelis-Menten (MM) and Langmuir-Hinshelwood (LH) model. In the MM model, the oxidation of TMB catalyzed by nanoparticles is inferred to the catalysis of peroxidase assuming the Ping-Pong mechanism. It is found that the frequently used analysis with the initial rates introduces large errors and leads to inconsistent results, which indicates that such approach is not suitable to analyze the oxidation of TMB catalyzed by nanoparticles. In the LH model, it is assumed that H_2O_2 and TMB adsorb on the surface of nanoparticles in the first step. The LH model with product inhibition gives satisfactory description of the kinetic data up to a conversion of 40%. The entire analysis demonstrates that the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model provides a superior approach to describe the kinetics of TMB oxidation catalyzed by nanoparticles.

In der Entwicklung von Technologien für die nachhaltige Erzeugung, Speicherung und Umwandlung von Energie werden Hochleistungskatalysatoren benötigt. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit werden verschiedene Übergangsmetall-basierte Katalysatoren, namentlich TiO2/Kohlenstoff-Komposite, anorganisch-organische Hybridsysteme auf Basis von NiFe Phosphonaten sowie Ni Phosphide, synthetisiert, charakterisiert und hinsichtlich ihrer photo- und elektrokatalytischen Eigenschaften untersucht. Es wird gezeigt, dass die Grenzflächeneigenschaften der TiO2/C-Komposite signifikant durch die Gestaltung des Heizvorgangs während der Synthese beeinflusst werden. Insbesondere der Einsatz von Mikrowellenstrahlung vermag die Synthese von Kohlenstoff-basierten Materialien positiv zu beeinflussen. Schnelles Erwärmen führt zu stärkeren Wechselwirkungen zwischen Nanopartikeln und Kohlenstoff, einheitlicheren Beschichtungen und kleineren Partikeln mit schmaleren Partikelgrößenverteilungen, wodurch die photokatalytische Aktivität verbessert wird. Schichtartige, hybride NiFe-Phenylphosphonat-Materialien werden ausgehend in Benzylalkohol dargestellt und ihre Aktivität in der OER im basischen Milieu untersucht. Die Hybridpartikel werden in-situ in NiFe-Hydroxid Nanoschichten umgewandelt. Röntgenspektroskopische Untersuchungen deuten auf eine induzierte, teilweise verzerrte Koordinationsumgebung der Metallzentren im Katalysator hin. Die Kombination der synergistischen Effekte zwischen Ni und Fe mit den strukturellen Eigenschaften des Hybridmaterials ermöglicht einen effizienten Katalysator. Weiterhin werden Nickel-Phosphide durch die thermische Behandlung der Phenyl- oder Methylphosphonate des Nickels, welche Schichtstrukturen aufweisen, in H2(5%)/Ar-Atmosphäre synthetisiert. Ni12P5, Ni12P5-Ni2P und Ni2P Nanopartikel, die mit einer dünnen Schicht aus Kohlenstoffmaterial beschichtet sind, werden erhalten. Ni12P5-Ni2P und Ni2P Nanopartikel katalysieren die Wasserstoffentwicklungsreaktion (HER) im Sauren effektiv. High-performance catalysts play a key role in the development of technologies for sustainable production, storage, and conversion of energy. In this thesis, transition-metal-based catalysts, including TiO2/carbon composites, hybrid organic-inorganic NiFe phosphonates, and Ni phosphides are synthesized, characterized, and investigated in photocatalytic or electrocatalytic reactions. TiO2 is frequently combined with carbon materials, such as reduced graphene oxide (rGO), to produce composites with improved properties. TiO2 is more efficiently stabilized at the surface of rGO than amorphous carbon. Rapid heating of the reaction mixture results in a stronger coupling between the nanoparticles and carbon, more uniform coatings, and smaller particles with narrower size distributions. The more efficient attachment of the oxide leads to better photocatalytic performance. Layered hybrid NiFe-phenylphosphonate compounds are synthesized in benzyl alcohol, and their oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance in alkaline medium is investigated. The hybrid particles transformed in situ into NiFe hydroxide nanosheets. X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements suggest the metal sites in the active catalyst inherited partly the distorted coordination. The combination of the synergistic effect between Ni and Fe with the structural properties of the hybrid results in an efficient catalyst that generates a current density of 10 mA cm-2 at an overpotential of 240 mV. Moreover, nickel phosphides are synthesized through thermal treatment under H2(5%)/Ar of layered nickel phenyl- or methylphosphonates that act as single-source precursors. Ni12P5, Ni12P5-Ni2P and Ni2P nanoparticles coated with a thin shell of carbonaceous material are produced. Ni12P5-Ni2P and Ni2P NPs efficiently catalyze the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acidic medium. Co2P and CoP NPs are also synthesized following this method.
