Systematic granulomatosis is a chronic disease that affects the majority of farmed meagre (A. regius). Nutritional imbalances and overcrowding can increase the risk to suffer oxidative stress, and consequently impact the incidence of granulomatosis. In order to evaluate this, juvenile meagre were fed five isolipidic (16.7 %) and isoproteic (49.6 %) fish meal and fish oil-based feeds prepared by adding different levels of vitamin C, minerals (Mn, Zn, Se) with constant vitamin E and K (300 and 35 mg kg-1, respectively): Diet KEC (100 mg kg-1C), Diet KEC+Mn/Zn/Se (100 mg kg-1C, 40 mg kg-1Mn, 200 mg kg-1Zn, 1.5 mg kg-1Se), Diet KECC (600 mg kg-1C), Diet KECCC (1,200 mg kg-1C), Diet KECCCC (3,200 mg kg-1C). All diets were tested at 3.20 kg m-3, but diets KECC and KECCCC was also tested at 6.20 kg m-3. Growth performance was only affected by stocking density, being lower at high density. Percentage of fish with granulomas was significantly lower in fish fed with the highest dietary vitamin C contents (KECCC and KECCCC) at low density. TBARS content was correlated with the percentage of granulomas in liver (R2=0.9439, y=0.003x-0.1242) denoting the involvement of an imbalance oxidative status in the appearance of granulomas. The present results show that high levels of vitamin C (1,200-3,200 mg kg-1C) and low stock density (3.20 kg m-3) favours the growth of juvenile meagre, reducing the lipid peroxidation indicators and decreasing the incidence of granulomas, which confirms that this pathology is mostly triggered by deficiency of antioxidant nutrients, particularly vitamin C.

Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) were fed five graded levels of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3), from 1.4 to 5.2% of total fatty acids (FA, 5–17 mg kg−1 feed), and grew from ~160 g to ~3000 g, with the period from 1450 g onwards conducted both at 6 °C and at 12 °C. All fish appeared healthy, and there were no diet-related differences in haematological or plasma parameters, as well as intestinal histological or gut microbiota analysis. Fish reared at 6 °C had higher accumulation of storage lipids in the liver compared to fish reared at 12 °C. Liver lipids also increased with decreasing dietary EPA + DHA at 6 °C, while there was no such relationship at 12 °C. This study investigated whether retention of n-3 fatty acids (FAs) is influenced by the levels of dietary monounsaturated (MUFA)-, saturated (SFA)- and n-6 FAs. The feeding trial used a mixture design, with rapeseed-, palm (PO)- and soybean oil (SO), providing high levels of MUFA, SFA and n-6 FAs, respectively, while 18:3n-3, eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3) were kept constant. Furthermore, a diet group with high SO and reduced 18:3n-3 was included in addition to the mixture design. There were no differences in growth or proximate composition, but the PO diet gave reduced FA digestibility and increased feed conversion ratio. All diet groups had a net production of DHA, shown by retention values >100% (133%–177%). High dietary n-6 FAs of up to 43% of FAs (18:2n-6/18:3n-3 ratio 8.6) did not negatively affect DHA retention, but rather had a small positive impact. High levels of substrate (dietary 18:3n-3 at ~10% of FAs) did not enhance DHA retention compared to 5% 18:3n-3. This is a highly significant finding for the aquaculture industry, allowing for greater flexibility in the choice of lipid sources to replace fish oil in salmon feeds.

By feeding Atlantic salmon diets with 64% of the fish oil (FO) replaced by vegetable oil, and with decreasing fishmeal (FM) inclusion levels from 213, 178 and 143 g kg−1 (accumulated level during the seawater phase) in a full-scale experiment producing 3.1 thousand tonnes fish, no significant negative effects on fish performance, health and product quality were observed. All dietary groups showed, however, moderate intestinal inflammation. Reduced growth and feed efficiency were seen with decreasing fishmeal inclusion levels. Two dietary groups demonstrated net marine protein production, while none of the groups showed net fish production (FIFO ≥1.65) due to the equal low FO inclusion. High plant oil level gave lower fillet level of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) compared with the levels surveyed on the Norwegian market. The study gave predictable incorporation rates of essential n-3 long-chain fatty acids in the fillet. Cooked salmon fillet from all dietary groups showed minor differences in sensory quality. Based on the present full-scale production results, dietary FM inclusion down to 160 g kg−1 (accumulated) during the seawater phase, concurrent to replacing ~70% of the FO with a suitable plant oil, is not regarded to represent any risk to fish performance, health or quality.

Adult Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar; approximately 800 g start weight) were fed diets with a high replacement of fish meal (FM) with plant proteins (70% replacement), and either fish oil (FO) or 80% of the FO replaced by olive oil (OO), rapeseed oil (RO) or soybean oil (SO) during 28 weeks in triplicate. Varying the lipid source only gave non-significant effects on growth and final weight. However, a significantly reduced feed intake was observed in the SO fed fish, and both feed utilization and lipid digestibility were significantly reduced in the FO fed fish. Limited levels of dietary 18:3n-3, precursor to EPA and DHA, resulted in no net production of EPA and DHA despite increased mRNA expression of delta-5-desaturase and delta-6-desaturase in all vegetable oil fed fish. Net production of marine protein, but not of marine omega-3 fatty acids, is thus possible in Atlantic salmon fed 80% dietary vegetable oil and 70% plant proteins resulting in an estimated net production of 1.3 kg Atlantic salmon protein from 1 kg of FM protein. Production of one 1 kg of Atlantic salmon on this diet required only 800 g of wild fish resources (Fish in - Fish out

Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), initial weight 15 g, were fed ten experimental diets for 15 weeks. The diets were based on a mixture of plant proteins (PP) and fish meal (FM), where PP constituted 65% of dietary protein. PP mixtures were chosen to reach as low levels of lysine and methionine as possible. The diets were supplemented with increasing amounts of lysine (19.2–31.9 g kg−1 diet) or methionine (9.4–12.3 g kg−1 diet), in a regression design. No growth difference among diet groups was found in the plant-based diets. Increased dietary lysine resulted in decreased liver size, plasma triacylglycerol concentration (TAG) and lipid productive value (LPV). Methionine additions did not result in changed Hepatosomatic index (HSI), LPV or plasma TAG. Feed conversion ratio (FCR) and protein utilization were neither affected by lysine nor methionine. Plasma and muscle concentrations of free lysine and methionine correlated with dietary levels 5-h post feeding. Overall conclusion was that cod maintain growth rates in plant-based diets if dietary protein was high, without additional supplements of crystalline lysine or methionine. Lysine intake significantly influenced lipid metabolism, showing the necessity to add lysine in plant protein-based diets to hinder increased lipid deposition. No such effects were found because of lack of methionine additions.

This paper reports on the use of plant protein in cod diets, and where corn gluten meal, soybean meal, a mixture of these, or a mixture of wheat gluten meal and soy protein concentrate, substituted fish meal in a regression design up to 440 g kg−1 plant ingredients. Feeding lasted for a period of 20 weeks. High growth rates were obtained, and fish were able to maintain growth in all groups by increasing feed intake when plant proteins exerted high amounts of the protein fraction. This was confirmed by increased feed conversion ratio (FCR) values. The apparent digestibility measured by means of faecal stripping, showed high apparent digestibility coefficients (ADC) for fat, starch and protein. Small decreases in protein ADC and larger decreases in fat ADC were observed with high levels of plant protein ingredients. No histopathological changes were found, neither in liver nor in the different sections of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, for any of the diet groups. Expression of stress genes (heat shock protein 70 and 90 (HSP70 and HSP90)) in liver showed no response to high levels of plant protein. Invasion of gut-bacteria in the distal part of the GI tract was substantial, but independent of diet level of plant ingredients. Gut evacuation analysis showed that the time for a meal to pass through the stomach and the GI tract was more than 72 h, with no variation dependent on diet plant protein level. The major conclusion is that cod shows a high tolerance to the plant protein sources investigated in this experiment, and consequently that Atlantic cod safely can be fed diets holding up to 440 g kg−1 of the present investigated plant protein ingredients without any adverse effects on intestinal or liver function. There seems to be no gain if feeding frequency exceeds more than one large meal every 24 h at 6–7°C.

Juvenile Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) were fed extruded feeds formulated to contain 360–660 g kg−1 protein, 80–280 g kg−1 lipid and 80–180 g kg−1 starch at feeding frequencies of either once per day or every second day to satiation. The trial was conducted at 8 °C and lasted for 28 weeks during which fish were weighed five times at regular intervals. Sampling for proximate analysis was performed at the start, after 12 weeks and at the end of the trial. Fish grew from an average weight of 192 g to between 750 and 866 g, with growth being negatively affected by low dietary protein concentration. High dietary starch concentrations had some negative effects on growth, whereas changes in dietary fat concentration had no significant effect on growth. Liver indices (at the end of the experiment) varied between 80 and 170 g kg−1, and there was a negative correlation between the ratio of protein to fat and liver index. Feed conversion ratio (FCR) ranged between 0.74 and 0.88, and feed utilization improved with increasing concentrations of dietary protein and fat. Increasing dietary starch concentrations resulted in poorer feed utilization. To achieve good growth and protein retention, and avoid excessive liver size in juvenile cod, feeds should contain 500–600 g kg−1 crude protein, 130–200 g kg−1 lipid and

Effect of season and diet on muscle composition were evaluated in farmed Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.), fed varying levels of macro-nutrients, and kept at two different light regimes during 1 year grow-out in sea-cages. The cod were fed seven different diets varying in protein, lipid and starch, in a mixture design. The diets spanned 4–20% starch, 8–26% lipid and 36–66% protein. Each dietary regime was subjected to two different light regimes: continuous light (24 h), or natural light (August 2001 to June 2002). Fish subjected to natural light started to mature in December/January and spawning was more or less completed during March/April. No maturation was registered in the continuous light groups at this point. No variation was found in muscle dry matter, protein or lipid concentration as a consequence of the dietary or light regime variations, except for the groups spawning in March. Glycogen varied from 1 to 6.5 mg g−1 wet weight, without any correlation to the present dietary variations. At the June 2002 sampling all groups given a natural light regime showed almost twice the concentration of muscle glycogen compared with fish subjected to continuous light. Such clear results were not measured at the December or March samplings. Increased dietary lipid resulted in lowered muscle vitamin E concentration. A strong covariation between muscle vitamins C and E was found at all samplings, and these showed a negative correlation towards eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and the ratio n-3/n-6 in muscle. The highest dietary vitamin E resulted in the lowest muscle vitamin C concentrations. All dietary lipid added was identical and of marine origin; in addition, the wheat added as a starch source summed up parts of the dietary lipid fraction, resulting in slightly decreased sum of polyenes in the diets holding the highest levels of wheat. The lean cod muscle consists almost solely of membrane lipids. These were, however, highly influenced by the dietary lipid composition, especially as concerned the different monoenes. Two of the diets showed tendencies to increased thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS). This was not reflected in the muscle concentrations of vitamins E or C, and did not result in any changes in muscle TBARS values at any of the samplings, except for the fish spawning in March. The water-soluble fraction of the muscle protein, pH range from 4.5 to 6, did show a difference in structure when comparing our experimental cod to wild cod. We could also identify a differential pattern between some of the experimental groups. The method used to identify this was, however, not quantitative, and further studies are needed. Taste panel evaluation and shear force measurements after final sampling in June concluded with minor differences between muscles from the different diet groups, except for fish given one diet with relatively high protein, intermediate lipid and low starch levels. Fish kept at continuous light was described as less firm (texture) compared with fish kept at natural light, explained partly by the different size of these two categories of fish. In conclusion, both diet and season (spawning or not) did influence several of the measured muscle parameters.

Due to its traditionally good availability, digestibility and high content of n − 3 HUFA, fish oil is the main lipid source in fish feeds. However, world demand for this product has grown significantly in recent years, whereas its production, based on fisheries landings, is static. The purpose of the present study was to assess the effect of partial replacement of fish oil in compound diets for gilthead seabream and seabass, by several vegetable oil sources, on growth, dietary fatty acid utilization and flesh quality. Five iso-energetic and isoproteic experimental diets were formulated (25% lipid content). Fish oil was the only added lipid source in the control (FO) diet, and it was included in the other experimental diets at a level high enough (40% of FO diet) to keep the n − 3 HUFA levels well over 3% in order to cover the essential fatty acid requirements of these species. Fish oil was replaced by soyabean oil (SO), rapeseed oil (RO) and linseed oil (LO) or a mixture (Mix) of them. Feed intake in all dietary groups was in the range of results obtained for commercial diets in both species, and growth and feed utilization were very good. The results show that, providing a minimum content of essential fatty acids in the diet, it is possible to replace up to 60% of the fish oil by SO, LO and RO or a mixture of them in diets for seabream and seabass, without compromising fish growth. Fatty acid composition of liver and muscle reflected that of the diet, but utilization of dietary lipids differed between these two tissues and was also different for the different fatty acids. Despite reduction in dietary saturated fatty acids by the inclusion of vegetable oils, their levels in fish liver were as high as in fish fed the fish oil diet, whereas, in muscle, levels were reduced according to that in the diet. Linoleic and linolenic acids were accumulated in the liver proportionally to their levels in the diet, suggesting a lower oxidation of these fatty acids in comparison to other 18C fatty acids. Regarding eicosapentaenoic acid (20 : 5n − 3; EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (22 : 6n − 3; DHA) and arachidonic acid (20 : 4n − 6; ARA), these essential fatty acids were reduced in the liver at a similar rate, whereas DHA was preferentially retained in the muscle in comparison with the other fatty acids, denoting a higher oxidation particularly of EPA, in the muscle. Some other PUFA increased despite their low dietary levels in seabream fed LO diets and in seabass fed SO diet, suggesting the stimulation of delta-6 and delta-5 desaturase activity in marine fish. Despite differences in fatty acid composition, fillet of fish fed vegetable oils was very well accepted by trained judges when assessed cooked.

The present study investigates the impact of replacing at least 50% of the fish oil in high-energy salmon diets with other types of oils. Triplicate groups of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) were fed six diets differing only in dietary lipid source for 12 months in sea water. The experimental oils were combinations of fish oil and one or two of the following oils: rapeseed, soybean, linseed, palm or poultry oil. Fish oil constituted 40%−50% of the oil mixtures. The fish grew from an average weight of 120 g to 2000 g during the 12 month trial. Except for minor differences in the lipid concentration of trimmed fillets, no significant effects of dietary lipid source were found on growth, survival, body traits or fillet quality. The main dietary effect was observed in the muscle fatty acid composition, which clearly reflected that of the diets. These results show that high-energy diets where 50%−60% of the fish oil is replaced by other lipid sources can produce similar results to diets containing 100% fish oil during the grow out phase of Atlantic salmon in sea. The importance of fillet fatty acid composition on processing and sensory characteristics requires further evaluations.

Diets with increasing levels of potato and maize starch were fed to duplicate groups of maturing cod, Gadus morhuaL., from June 1991 to January 1992.The level of starch in the diet did not influence feed conversion factors, broodfish growth or gonadal development. Low levels of fillet glycogen were measured at all samplings, without variations according to dietary starch, or to developmental stage of the brood fish. During the reproductive phase no decreases were measured in relative liver size or liver protein, lipid or glycogen, indicating no net use of stored energy from the liver to build up gonads as long as the fish was offered feed. The variations in dietary starch vs. protein did not alter the composition of gonad dry matter, protein, lipid or glycogen levels. However, dry matter and protein levels increased during maturation in all groups. Plasma glucose levels were within normal ranges in all dietary groups at all sampling times, indicating no negative effects of high levels of dietary starch in brood fish, as also confirmed by stable and normal haematocrit, red blood cell count, and mean cell volume in blood. Haemoglobin, mean cell haematocrit and mean cell haemoglobin concentration decreased during the reproductive phase. Serum haemolytic complement activity did not vary between dietary treatments. Glycogen, dry matter, protein and lipid levels in eggs did not vary between dietary treatments of brood fish. Very low levels of glycogen were measured, suggesting that this energy reserve was of minor importance. Dry matter and lipid levels were quite stable in relation to egg developmental stage: protein levels decreased from day 0 until hatching.
